International Society for Rock Mechanics

ISRM Fellows In line with enhancing the recognition of ISRM members’ high-level achievements, the status of ISRM Fellows acknowledges select individuals who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in the areas of rock mechanics/rock engineering and have contributed significantly to the work of the ISRM. The title of ISRM Fellow carries a clear Society recognition in addition to that which an individual has attained through his or her own reputation.

The title and position of ISRM Fellow is a lifetime appointment. ISRM Fellows can be called upon as appropriate for ISRM activities, and would be expected to provide reasonable advice namely in the ISRM Advisory Forum, which meets every two years. Thus, the induction of ISRM Fellows creates a group of high-level experts who can provide strong support to the ISRM as necessary.

The initial group of Fellows was inaugurated in the ISRM Beijing Congress in 2011, the second group in 2013, during the ISRM International Symposium in Wroclaw, Poland and the third group during the ISRM Montréal Congress in 2015.

Photographs and abbreviated CVs of the fourth group of Fellows being inducted during the 2017 ISRM International Symposium, in Cape Town, South Africa, are included in the following pages–in alphabetical order of surnames.

XIA-TING FENG

Xia-Ting Feng, born in 1964, obtained his BSc in Mining Engineering (1986) from the Northeast University. of Science and Technology (Shenyang, China), and his PhD in rock mechanics (1992) from the Northeastern University (China), where he taught as Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor (1992-2001). He was Visiting Researcher (1995-6) and Special Research Officer (1996-7) at the National Institute for Resource and Environment (Tsukuba, Japan); and Senior Research Officer (1996) at the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa).

As a Professor of the Hundred Talent Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. Feng joined the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was Vice-Director in Charge, Director, Director of the Key Laboratory of Rock and Soil Mechanics, and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (1998-…). He also stayed at the Imperial College (UK), the University of Oklahoma (USA), the Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), and the Lille University of Science and Technology (France), as Visiting Professor or Academic Visitor.

Prof. Feng has been President of the ISRM (2011-5), President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) (2012-…), and Dean of the College of Resources and Civil Engineering of the Northeastern University (2016-…).

His research interests cover intelligent recognition of rock mechanical parameters, stability analysis, global optimum design, and disaster prediction and prevention in rock engineering. The achievements obtained have been successfully applied to some high slopes of hydropower stations, the permanent shiplock of Three Gorges Project, landslides along expressways, underground powerhouses and headrace tunnels, mine projects, and utilized by peers, in China and abroad.

ÁLVARO J. GONZALEZ GARCIA

Álvaro J. Gonzalez Garcia, born in Bogotá, Colombia (1942), obtained his Civil Engineer (Honors) (1965) at the Colombia National University (Bogotá), and took part in MSc courses (1966-7), at the Iowa State University (USA). He taught, intermittently, in several Colombian universities (1969-93), as External Professor, and started to work as Consultant in Geotechnical Engineering (1970). He obtained his DIC (Soil Mechanics) and his MSc (Soil Mechanics) (Distinction) (1974), both at the University of London (UK).

At the Colombia National University, he was Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, Chief of the Geotechnical Section, and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering (1975-2013), being now Emeritus Professor.

He joined Ingeniería y Hidrosistemas Ltd – Consulting Engineers (1978-86), in Bogotá, as Partner, worked as Director of the National Highway Landslide Research, of the Colombia National University, for the Ministry of Public Works (1986-9), and is Partner and Manager of Análisis Geotécnicos Colombianos Ltd (1990- …), in Bogotá.

Prof. Gonzalez has been President of the Colombian Geotechnical Society (SCG), for four 2-year terms of office, and ISRM Vice President for South America (2007-11), and is member of IAEG, ISSMGE, ASCE, AICUN (Civil Engineers Association of the Colombia National University), and SCI (Colombian Engineers Society).

Prof. Gonzalez is the author of over 120 papers, and has guided over 35 postgraduate theses. He taught courses on several topics in geotechnical engineering, and provided consultancy in geotechnical aspects of transportation, hydroelectric, irrigation, mining, and urban projects, and in hazard and risk evaluations, for the Colombian Geological Service, the United Nations (UNDRO-Colombia), the World Bank, and many other state and private entities, having participated in 3 major projects awarded with the SCI Colombian National Engineering Prize.

YUZO OHNISHI

Yuzo Ohnishi is an Emeritus Professor at the Kyoto University Japan, and a Visiting Professor at the Kansai University, Japan.

He graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of the Kyoto University (1968), and obtained his BEng. in Civil Engineering, and PhD (1973) from the University of California at Berkeley, USA, with the supervision by Prof. R.E. Goodman. Thereafter, he worked as a staff member at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory USA, and returned to the Kyoto University, where he became Doctor of Engineering (1990).

In his 39 year-career in the Kyoto University, Prof. Ohnishi was Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil Engineering. In the meantime, he conducted research at the Geological Engineering Laboratory, in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the MIT, USA (1987-8). He also stayed at the EPFL, in Switzerland, to conduct joint research and teaching (2000).

Prof. Ohnishi supervised a large number of MSc and PhD theses, and published a great number of papers in journals and conferences in the field of rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and groundwater analyses. He is also an editorial board member of several international journals. At the same time, he has been active in the University administration. He was an Executive Vice-President of the Kyoto University (2012-5).
