Others saw the remarks as a reflection of the divisions between Ashkenazic Jews, whose families lived in Central and Eastern Europe, and Sephardic Jews, mainly from the Middle East and North Africa, whose political power has grown. Shas draws much of its support from working-class Sephardim, a fact alluded to by Mr. Lapid. "It seems that Rabbi Yosefwanted to say that Ashkenazis sinned and that is why they died in the Holocaust," he said. StilI others said they feared that the remarks could encourage anti-Semites who deny that the Holocaust occurred. Other critics saw Rabbi Yosef's remarks about Palestinians as an attempt to complicate the peace efforts further.

The 80-year-old spiritual leader of a major religious political party outraged many Israelis with asermon over the weekend in which he said the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaustdied because they were reincarnations of sinners, and he sought today to calm the storm.

In a new sermon today, the spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, offered no explicit apology forhis remarks, made in a broadcast on Saturday. But the Baghdad-bern rabbi, the pre-eminentfigure in the Shas Party, which holds a key bloc of 17 seats in Israel's l20-member Parliament, appeared to backtrack from his earlier statement.

"Six million Jews, among them one million children, were killed by the wicked Nazis," he said. "All were holy and pure and complete saints."

As printed in today's English-language editions of the newspaper Haaretz, Rabbi Yosef said this:"The six million Jews, all those poor people who were lost at the hands of those evil ones, theNazis, may their names be.blotted out - was it for nothing? Thus. repentance and sufferinglH saved the sinner from going downthe pit, 123 but he will not merit to see the Supreme Lightl25 until thesoul is reborn as at first. Thus. Elihu next said. His flesh is more tenderthan a child's, He retumeth to the days of his youth. 126 When he growsup, he will pray to G-d, and through his repentance and suffering hewill be accepted by G-d. His righteousness will then be restored [as atfirst] for he will not have sinned since the days of his rebirth. His afflic-tions will have ensued from his former transgressions. which shouldhave brought about his utter destruction. However. G-d devised meansso that he would not be banished from the World to Come. and he willthen merit the Supreme Light, l2Sas Elihu said. So He redeemed hissoul from goz"ng into the Pit, and his life beholdeth the light, 127 areference to the Supreme Light. This device [of rebirth] can berepeated three times. as it says. La all these things doth G-d work, tunce, yea thrice, with a man. 1%8 Thus. the paradox of the suffering ofthe righteous man has been clearly explained. The question is com-
