It’s interesting that the term “kingdom of God”isn’t used in the Old Testament, but appears fre-quently in the New Testament. The kingdom of

God is central to the Gospels in particular. The messagethat was brought by Jesus, and before him, John the Baptist,was often called “the gospel of the kingdom of God.” The concept of akingdom of God was a hot topic among the Jews at that time, althoughthe most commonly accepted illusions were completely wrong. That canbe seen in Jesus’ encounter with Nicodemus (John 3). The Lord made itclear that the kingdom of God has spiritual dimensions and that entryinto the kingdom is only possible through a spiritual rebirth, a conceptthat was hard for Nicodemus to understand.

In the Old Testament, the kingdom of God is always portrayed as aworldwide earthly kingdom. Some examples of this can be found in thePsalms (c.f. Psalm 72, but the clearest examples of this idea are found inthe Book of Daniel: 4:34-37; 7:14, 18, 22, 27).

For the most part, the Jews saw the kingdom of heaven through theirlimited viewpoint as their own, sovereign “Jewish State.” The discipleswere no exception. Even after the crucifixion and resurrection, but be-fore the ascension into heaven, their most pressing question was, “Lord,are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6,NIV).

For the disciples, the national salvation of Israel was still the greatestconcern, just as it had always been. Jesus steered them gently away fromthe question that was burning in their minds, and toward that whichwas more important; namely, that they should be his witnesses to theends of the earth. The kingdom of God should be a worldwide kingdomthat will include all the peoples and nations of the earth.

Due to the influence of their Jewish mindset, the disciples found it al-most impossible to implement these mission instructions. Their religiousthought process limited them and hindered them. God Himself had tointervene by giving Peter the vision of the unclean animals, in order toprepare him to take the message to Cornelius in Rome. When he arrived,he said, “You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to asso-ciate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should notcall anyone impure or unclean” (Acts 10:28).

Although God taught Peter that lesson in an extraordinary fashion,neither he nor the other apostles were really free to bring the gospel tothe Gentiles. It was mainly Paul, who wasn’t so burdened by Jewish prej-udices—because he didn’t grow up in the land of Israel, but rather inTarsus, among Gentiles—who became the apostle to the Gentiles.

The Jewish prejudices against non-Jewish believers in Jesus remaineda concealed topic. Especially among those who came from the Pharisees,it was believed that non-Jews must first convert to Judaism, whichmeant they needed to be circumcised. Because of this issue, Paul made aspecial trip to Jerusalem, to settle the topic once and for all. There was aheated exchange of words, until Peter arose and reported his experiencewith Cornelius. He said that God doesn’t discriminate between Jews andnon-Jews, “for he purified their hearts by faith” (Acts 15:9).

Even today, there are still those who say that external distinctions, likecircumcision, are important. That only causes confusion. Paul under-stood the destructive power that these differences of opinion held. Thatwas why he put so much effort into resolving the issue.

In Galatians 3, he looks for words to clarify this issue, then says,“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is theremale and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (verse 28).

External signs, such as nationality or other characteristics, are not thecriteria for being part of the coming kingdom of God; only a new birthin the Spirit of God.

The prophet Daniel, who

lived during the time ofBabylonian exile, had a

vision in which he saw four con-secutive empires that would ruleover Israel (Daniel 7:1-7). Firstthe Babylonian Empire, symbol-ized as a Lion with eagle wings;Daniel himself was living duringthis time (Dan 7:4). Next he seesthe Bear arising, which stands forthe Medo-Persian Empire. Danielalso still experienced this period(Dan 7:5). Then Daniel observesAlexander the Great and the GreekEmpire, advancing in the form ofa Leopard (Dan 7:6). This is theperiod we are now focusing on.

The Jews returned from theirexile after the great Babylon hadbeen conquered by Persia. The Per-sian king Cyrus, and later Darius,let the Jews go back to their homecountry. They even allowed themto rebuild the Temple and the wallsurrounding Jerusalem. But then

the young Macedonian Alexander(later to be called “the Great”)began his military campaigns. Inthe year 334 BC, he liberated theGreek cities on the Asiatic Mediter-ranean coast from Persian control.With phenomenal speed, he finallyconquered all of the Persian Empire,as well as Egypt and Israel. Headvanced as far as India, and nonecould resist him. At 20 years of age,he succeeded his father to the Mace-donian throne. After liberation ofthose first Greek cities, his militaryforces needed only three years tosubdue the immense Persian Empire.Since all of this happened 200 yearsafter Daniel’s prophecy, it is stunningto see how accurately Daniel foresawthe events.

In Daniel’s vision of chapter 8:1-4, we meet a ram with two horns,a picture of Medo-Persia. The twohorns are the kingdom of Mediaand Persia (verse 20), which wouldjoin together in those days. But then

he is attacked andovercome by a malegoat (verses 5-8). “Andthe rough goat is theking of Grecia: and thegreat horn that isbetween his eyes is thefirst king” (verse 21).The male goat isGreece, who camefrom the West and did not touchthe ground (verse 5); this meanshe did not hesitate but swept acrossthe territories with ferocious speed.And that is exactly what historytells us.

Alexander the Great did, in fact,overrun the existing countries withhis military force with a swiftnessnever before seen. And that at atime when there were no airplanes,tanks or cars. Before the Persiansrealized what was happening, theywere already overcome. It is notby accident that Alexander theGreat has been entered into theannals of history. But when thegoat had grown overly great, his

big horn was broken(verse 8). This alsoagrees exactly with his-torical facts.

Alexander theGreat, the big horn,died at age 30 in Baby-lon, presumably due tomalaria and gluttony.Kings and armies had

been unable to stop him, but asmall mosquito brought his deathby malaria, and thus a halt to allhis might. That should also give usfood for thought: In the end, every-thing is without value if one doesnot have Jesus Christ. All is in God’shand. How quickly can health,vitality, happiness, love, fame andsuccess vanish. Everything is lostif I have not entrusted my life toGod’s Son, Jesus Christ.

The Greek Empire, which hadadvanced to be a world power insuch a short time, was divided intofour kingdoms after Alexander’sdeath—the other four horns (Daniel7:8; 8:22). Thus, the Empire was

Alexander the Great not onlyfulfilled God’s prophecy withoutbeing aware of it, but he also wasthe impetus for the Hellenistic cul-ture. He introduced a common cur-rency for the whole Greek Empire.He founded 70 new cities, Alexan-dria among others, and built a net-work of connecting roads, whichwas later enlarged by the Romans.Greek became the worldwide lan-guage. All this was important forthe coming of our Lord Jesus Christand the missionary work of theApostles and first Christians. A well-designed network of roads and alanguage that was understood inEurope, Asia and Africa—withoutthat it would not have been possiblefor the Christian faith to spread asquickly as it did. Thus, Alexanderthe Great was not only an extraor-

dinary military leader, but also hebecame a useful tool in God’s handin preparing for His coming to earthand the spread of the Gospel.

Following a period of turmoiland confusion (Israel’s rulers beingreplaced frequently, and with eachthe fate of the Jews would change),finally the Syrian AntiochusEpiphanes gained the rulership overIsrael in the year 175 BC. This manwas nothing short of a disaster forthe Jews. Freedom of religion wasdenied, and then Antiochus evenviolated and plundered the temple.He declared it to be a shrine of theGreek god Zeus, erected an altarof Zeus at the place where the altarfor burnt offerings had stood, andinstituted the sacrifice of pigs. Thisis the worst provocation imaginablefor Jews, since they hold pigs to beunclean. Daniel also describes inprecise detail all of the things thattranspired following the death ofAlexander: the power strugglebetween the King of the North andthe King of the South, as well asthe sacrifice perpetrated by Antiochus(chapter 11). But Israel’s story doesnot end at this low point, as we willsee in the next part. (NAI0518/942)

Commentary: Although this new law has alreadybeen enforced in several cases, the face-coveringissue is by no means solved. People who were bornin the country and educated there feel left out becauseof their religion. Muslim Students inJewish SchoolLike hundreds of Jewish institu-tions in the Diaspora, the KingDavid School celebrated Israel’s70th Independence Day withblue-and-white flags and groupsinging of the “Hatikvah”national anthem.

But the King David is not like mostother Jewish schools.

Most of the dozens of students in the53-year-old elementary school in a suburbof this gritty English city come from Muslimfamilies—the result of a decades-longdepletion in the size of most Jewish com-munities outside London and growingimmigration from South Asia and the

Middle East. According to parents and com-munity observers, 80 percent of the studentsare Muslim. The school declined to com-ment.On Israel’s Independence Day, which

this year fell on April 19, Esther Cohen, KingDavid’s head of religious education, kickedoff the ceremony in the school gym withthe Modeh Ani morning prayer in Hebrewfollowed by the Shema Yisrael prayer.Cohen showed the students two videos

celebrating Israeli innovation and invitedthem to another tefillah, this time to “thankHashem that he gave us Israel.” She askedthe students to stand up to sing “Hatikvah,”which speaks of “being a free People inZion, Jerusalem”—almost all of them sangthe Hebrew-language anthem by heart.Despite this unusual twist, King David

makes perfect sense to some Muslim par-ents.“It is a Jewish school but regardless of

that, I think it’s a very good school,” saidFouad, a medical professional whose familyis originally from Pakistan and whose daugh-ter attends King David. “The best thing aboutit is that it has discipline that other schoolslack. Commentary: While money is king forthe world, we see that Israel’s intellec-tual capability is another key for Israel’sfuture.We are reminded of the words of

Psalm 103:7: “He made known hisways unto Moses, his acts unto thechildren of Israel.” Moses knew God’sways; the Israelites were witnesses ofGod’s actions, but did not understandGod’s ways. This is now applicable tothe whole world; all nations have wit-nessed the regathering of the outcastsof Israel. Despite innumerable setbacksand numeric inferiority, Israel subduedthe Arab nations militarily. Many otherreports clearly demonstrate Israel’stechnological and intellectual superi-ority. The world is informed, but nocountry on the face of the earth believesGod’s ways; they all—without excep-tion—contradict the borders of thePromised Land as given by God. 6820

Israeli Teams Win Debate OverEuropeans Two Israeli teams were crowned champions ofthe European Universities DebatingChampionship in Serbia after a grueling nine-round tournament against the best debatersfrom across the continent.

Noam Dahan and Tom Manor of Tel Aviv Universitywere defending champions of last year’s title in the

“English as a Second Language” category.This year, they upped the challenge and competed alongside

native English speakers. Despite the language barrier, theywon in the competition intended for English speakers, beatingout some lead universities, such as University of Cambridgeand University of Oxford.The international competition was not all fun and debates,

however. The Qatar representatives repeatedly refused toparticipate in debates in which they were competing againstIsrael, stating on multiple occasions that they refuse to debatealongside an “apartheid state.”

Continental, Samsung, Daimler, Ford MotorCo and GM are among those to have boughtstartups or set up their own developmentcenters in Israel. “A lot of the entrepreneurs are coming

out of the Israel Defense Forces and theytend to be older than the traditional SiliconValley (entrepreneurs),” Ford Executive Chair-man Bill Ford Jr. told Reuters. “They have a lot of judgment and wisdom.

Particularly in areas like cybersecurity, there’stremendous activity coming out of Israel.” The United States attracts the most

Silicon Valley, Pittsburgh and Detroit are makingefforts to be leaders in the driverless car era. Israeli auto tech startups are not far behind.

They raised $814 million last year, triple the2015 level, and $182 million in the first quarterof 2018, in line with last year’s pace, accordingto Start-Up Nation Central. Israel’s auto tech sector started to take

off in 2014, the year after Google bought map-ping firm Waze for $1.2 billion.Another big step was when Intel spent

$15.3 billion on autonomous vehicle technologyfirm Mobileye last year and moved all its oper-ations in the field to Jerusalem. “We were not known as a country that

provides technology to the automotive industryand suddenly you have more than 500 differentstartups dealing with ... the automotive indus-try,” Mobileye co-founder Ziv Aviram said.

Commentary: The words in the article,“They have a lot of judgment and wis-dom,” are a striking statement for a coun-try only 70 years of age and continuouslythreatened by its neighbors with totaldestruction. That, however, seems to bethe key to wisdom and judgment; mean-ing that Israel is being forced to be a stepahead of the rest of the world. Thus, thecurse of the enemies returns to Israel inthe form of blessings.

Solomon, the son of David, had thisto say: “To know wisdom and instruction;to perceive the words of understanding;To receive the instruction of wisdom,justice, and judgment, and equity; Togive subtilty to the simple, to the youngman knowledge and discretion. A wiseman will hear, and will increase learning;and a man of understanding shall attainunto wise counsels: To understand aproverb, and the interpretation; thewords of the wise, and their dark say-ings. The fear of the Lord is the begin-ning of knowledge: but fools despisewisdom and instruction” (Proverbs1:2-7). 6776

It would be greatly appreciatedto have some of King Solomon’swisdom, when dealing with the

bureaucracy in our country and ourmunicipality in particular. Solomonhimself had administrative officers(1 Kings 4:1-28), and while readingthe Bible one of the names caughtmy eye. This was special and I amgoing to share it with you.

First Kings 4:10: “Ben-hesed, inArubboth (to him belonged Socohand all the land of Hepher).” Ben-hesed means Son of Grace. Arubbothmeans floodgates or windows ofheaven; the word in Hebrew is usedat the flood (Genesis 7:11b): “…andthe windows of heaven (ArubbothHa Shamaim) were opened.”

The Prophet Malachi says inchapter 3:10: “‘Bring the full titheinto the storehouse, so that theremay be food in My house. Test Me inthis,’ says the LORD of Hosts. ‘See if Iwill not open the floodgates ofheaven (Arubboth Ha Shamaim) and

pour out for you blessing withoutmeasure.’”

God has put a “Son of Grace” withus, and HE is the one to open the win-dows of heaven for us! He works inpeople’s hearts to give and support ourneeds. He moves the officials at thedifferent government offices. We at theEbenezer Home keep praying in faithto be able to fulfill the task of buildinga Nursing Ward, to serve the believingcommunity in Israel. The need for thisNursing Ward grows, and many lookforward to the construction to begin.We still wait patiently for the buildingpermit from the municipality; they arecaught up in their own bureaucracy.It’s a tiring process going back andforth with them, yet we know it’s onlya matter of time and all will be re-solved. Still it’s not easy. We pray aswell to gather all finances ASAP, withthe help of those whom God has put iton their hearts to help.

The book of Daniel is a power-ful and informative propheticbook. The first six chapters

give us the history of the Jews in cap-tivity under the rulership of Babylonand Persia.

In chapter 7, Daniel passes on thefirst of four visions. In chapter 10,the fourth vision is documented, andthere is one verse we must point out:“Now I am come to make thee under-stand what shall befall thy people inthe latter days: for yet the vision is formany days” (verse 14). When read-ing the three chapters containing thefourth vision of Daniel, we find thewords, “…what shall befall thy peo-ple in the latter days.” We immedi-

ately notice that very little is revealedabout the Jews; it is mostly about therest of the world.

In the introductory Scripture,Daniel is commanded to “…shut upthe words, and seal the book.” Whywas he not allowed to reveal the con-tent of that writing? The answer isfound in the next sentence: “even tothe time of the end.” That means thelast days, the time when salvation isrevealed through the Son of God, Je-sus Christ the Lord. That is the be-ginning of the end times.

Also significant is the last sen-tence: “…many shall run to and fro,and knowledge shall be increased.”Again, we must notice that Israel is

the main target of the entire Biblefrom Genesis to Revelation. Thus,Daniel, in the last chapter writes ofIsrael’s collective salvation: “…atthat time thy people shall be deliv-ered, every one that shall be foundwritten in the book” (Daniel 12:1).

It is also of noticeable interestthat Israel has become the mosttraveled nation on planet earth.About a decade and a half ago, theytook over first place from Germany.Today, with over 8.5 million inhabi-tants, over 7 million travel overseasevery year. That doubtless is un-precedented in history.

When it comes to “…knowledgeshall be increased,” there we see Is-rael racing toward world leader-ship.

A recent article in the JerusalemPost reads:

Israel has officially surpassed Japan

when it comes to gross domestic

product per capita, Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu said, a sign

that the Jewish state is evermore

affluent.

Israel enjoys GDP per capita of

$42,120—which is calculated by

dividing the country’s total econom-

ic output by its number of people.

In contrast, Japan’s GDP per capi-

ta is $40,850.

Netanyahu’s remarks, made at a

Likud party faction meeting, signal

that the country’s growing econom-

ic clout and its booming hi-tech

industry is overtaking, on a per-capi-

ta wealth basis, Japan’s vaunted con-

sumer electronics and automobile

manufacturing.

It’s yet another sign that Israel’s

economy continues to outperform

other peers in the West, including in

the United States and the eurozone.

The world average for GDP per

capita is $11,730, according to the

International Monetary Fund, while

advanced economies enjoy an aver-

age gross domestic product per

capita of $48,970.

However, it’s not all as rosy as itsounds, because there is a dark side

to this issue. The article continues:“The increasing GDP per capitamerely points to a growing pie, notnecessarily that the pie is being di-vided more equitably. And analystsfrom the IMF and Organization forEconomic Cooperation and Devel-opment (OECD) warn that unlessIsrael makes more headway in re-ducing social and educational gapsin the ultra-Orthodox and Arab sec-tors, Israel’s economic growth andcompetitiveness will falter.”

Nevertheless, we must keep inmind that the country wasfounded from scratch in 1948.About 800,000 Jews in the land of

Israel were threatened with anni-hilation by the neighboring Arabstates. These 800,000 were mostlynew immigrants, speaking differ-ent languages, with little to nomilitary training. Yet, they success-fully defeated the enemies. Today,they have developed into the mosteffective military force in theworld.

What is Israel’s future? Theprophet Joel writes: “But Judahshall dwell for ever, and Jerusalemfrom generation to generation. ForI will cleanse their blood that Ihave not cleansed: for the Lorddwelleth in Zion” (Joel 3:20-21).
