  • Kalon Approach

From the outset, Kalon radically inverted furniture production norms to create truly sustainable and domestically produced furniture collections that make no compromises in terms of quality and aesthetics. From its raw materials to its finishes and upholstery, Kalon utilizes solid, all-natural materials that enrich rather than deplete resources. Consideration is made for the environment and those in contact with pieces through their entire life cycle including production, use and end-of-life. Using a mixof advanced technologies and time-tested traditional methods of production, the studio rejects standard and wasteful volume-based methods in favor of smarter and more sustainable ones.

A perfect marriage of beauty and utility, Kalon is known for simple, functional forms and a quiet, understated aesthetic. Impeccably crafted from durable and time-tested natural materials, each piece is thoughtfully designed with a focus on detail, material and experience. Kalon’s practice stems from a belief in the simple beauty and emotive quality of everyday objects.

Kalon was founded in 2007 by Johann Pauwen and Michaele Simmering in Los Angeles, CA. All pieces are built by master craftsmen in the United States using a mix of traditional and highly technological methods and a 360 degree approach to sustainability.

    The Isometric Collection

Drawing upon over 200 years of meticulous woodworking traditions, the Mennonites build these pieces with the most sophisticated contemporary manufacturing technologies, bringing time-honored processes into the 21st century.

The collection was released in 2009.

With its unpretentious styling and honest forms, the Isometric Collection calls upon the underlying principles of Shaker, Mission and early American furniture design. With clean lines, practical beauty and enduring craftsmanship, the collection is simplicity at its purest, bringing a modern point of view to the spirit and functionality of these great American wood furniture traditions.

As with all of Kalon’s work, the pieces are built in the United States from exclusively domestic materials. The collection is built and finished by Mennonite craftsmen in Pennsylvania.

  • KalonSustainable Considerations

Upholstered work uses all-natural textiles and organic fills avoiding the use of standard, non-biodegradable, polyurethane foams. Kalon selects textiles with a certified chain of custody and that are natural, durable and biodegradable.

Pieces are finished with a custom mixed, premium organic, natural oil-wax finish. Completely HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants) and EDC (Endocrine Disrupting Chemical) free, this sophisticated, plant-based finish avoids the use of petroleum-based synthetics and harmful chemical compounds.

Except for the minimal amounts of glue used in wood joinery and the sewing thread usedin upholstery, all aspects of the furniture are natural and fully-biodegradable. Each material and finish has been carefully selected to ensure that it is not harmful to the people handing it, to the environment or to the people who useit. All pieces are free of endocrine disrupting chemicals.

All pieces are built by master craftsmen in the United States, supporting local economies and trades and ensuring the continuation and retention of traditional craft, knowledge and skills. The goal is not to simply meet the accepted standards and practices for environmentally safe production but rather to push beyond them to find the exact limits of what can be done to have a net positive effect on the environment, economy, society and culture. The studio seeks to change practices and perspectives from the inside out.

Founded by Michaele Simmering and Johann Pauwen in 2007, Kalon radically inverted furniture production norms to create truly sustainable and domestically produced furniture collections that make no compromises in terms of quality and aesthetics. From its raw materials to its finishes and upholstery, Kalon utilizes solid, all-natural materials that enrich rather than deplete resources. Consideration is made for the environment and those in contact with pieces through their entire life cycle including production, use and end-of-life. Using a mixof advanced technologies and time-tested traditional methods of production, Kalon rejects standard and wasteful volume-based methods in favor of smarter and more sustainable ones.

Kalon’s catalog of work is made in the United States using all-natural, fully-biodegradable materials. To minimize the carbon footprint, all the materials and resources selected are local to the factory used for a given piece. Kalon works mostly with wood and uses exclusively sustainably-harvested domestic hardwoods.

By building smarter and using batch-size one production, pieces are built only as needed and so there is no waste or overstock. Advanced technologies are used to maximize material yield and to significantly reduce material waste. Pieces are not warehoused, meaningno additional transport or energy is used for heating or cooling storage areas. Instead, pieces ship upon completion minimizing the energy use and carbon output created by fuel and transport.
