Head of Department for Human Settlement, Gaster Sharpley said they receive many com- plaints about people occupying the houses il- legally. He said they started the campaign in Burg- ersdorp, but they will also visit other areas to do the same thing. “People must know that the Department is building houses at a cost of R100 000 but they (community members) sell those houses for R10 000 or R20 000,” said Sharpley. He said the problem was that community members were selling houses as if they were selling loaves of bread because they want the money to fulfil their immediate needs. “People who are doing that must know that it is illegal to sell these houses because gov- ernment had spent a lot of money with the aim of uplifting their standard of living. “If the owner feels that he or she does not want the house anymore, they must tell the department so that a decision can be taken or it can be allocated to someone who needs it.” He said they wanted to make sure that gov- ernment does not spend money on people who are not beneficiaries. In cases where houses are occupied by chil- dren, since their parents had died, the chil- dren must register again. He said when they return to their offices, they will look at the information they ob- tained from the community members and see what would be their next step. One of the community members, Similo Ndukwana, used the visit by the department as an opportunity to voice out his concerns over the challenges they were faced with in the RDP houses. He said some of the houses don’t have prop- er windows and the floors were not in good condition. “We are asking for help with these houses because they are not in a good condition at all. “More especially – I am very old now and I do not have the strength to build another house for me,” said Ndukwana.
