ISOISO

• International organization for standardization

– ISO from isos (Greek) meaning ‘equal’

– Standards are developed by consensus

– 162 countries

– World's largest developer and publisher of international standards

– Examples

• ISO 9000 series on Quality management systems

ISO/TC 211, Geographic information/Geomatics

Standardization in the field of digital geographic information.Standardization in the field of digital geographic information.

This work aims to establish a structured set of standards for information concerning

objects or phenomena that are directly or indirectly associated with a location

relative to the Earth.

These standards may specify, for geographic information, methods, tools and services

for data management (including definition and description), acquiring, processing,

analyzing, accessing, presenting and transferring such data in digital/electronic form

between different users, systems and locations.

between different users, systems and locations.

The work shall link to appropriate standards for information technology and data

where possible, and provide a framework for the development of sector-specific

applications using geographic data.

Preliminary work (stage 0) on addressing

Objectives:

1. Investigate and formulate requirements in

relation to addressing.

2. Make recommendations on whether

standards should be developed and if so,

How standards facilitate address interoperabilityHow standards facilitate address interoperability

• Addressing system– How addresses are allocated in the real world

• Terminology• Terminology– Terms and definitions describing the addressing

system and/or concepts

• Conceptual model that describes addresses– Meaning of concepts and relationships between

them• Typically, a combination of components or elements

• Often comprising a hierarchy

– Address classifications (address types)
