Sherri met with Richards Landing businesses and the Town-ship of St. Joseph Council last week to inform them person-ally that the event would not take place in 2014. “The Township of St. Joseph and St. Joseph Island have ben-efited greatly by hosting the Triathlon for the past decade.”said Mayor JodyWildman. “Sherri has worked tirelessly inestablishing such a great event, and its popularity is a testa-ment to all those involved. Unfortunately, that popularityhas meant the event has outgrown the present location.”

Jody also added that the Township would always be open toworking together on events in the future. “St. Joseph Islandhas a long history of organizing and hosting sporting activi-ties in both the winter and summer and will continue to doso.” he said. “We look forward to working with those inter-ested in developing new challenges for the residents of theSault and Algoma to participate in.”

JocelynMall Smashes Its OwnRecord!

It sometimes seems like we’ve heard it before, but that’s be-cause we have! Sally Hooke, attendant at the Jocelyn Town-ship Landfill Site and ‘Manager’ of the highly-acclaimed‘Jocelyn Mall’ is so happy that her feet are barely touchingthe ground. Why is that?

We think it might have something to do with the fact thatshe recently turned over the Jocelyn Mall’s proceeds for thesix months from September 2013 to February 2014 as a cashdonation to the Island and Area Food Bank. But that’s notthe whole story … Sally can’t contain her ear-to-ear grin asshe laughs “Thanks folks! We broke another record!”

Once again, the Jocelyn Mall’s ‘patrons’ have supported theFood Bank with a new record in donations … and theydidn’t just ‘break’ last year’s record, they smashed it! In thepast six months, donations grew to a total of $2,384.15, com-pared to $1,764.45 for the same period last year. This greatidea just keeps getting better and better!

Congratulations everyone on helping our Food Bank tomake a difference for our neighbours in need. But let’s notstop there in our support. The need to help others hasn’tstopped, so neither can we.

Taking place on three consecutive Wednesdayevenings at the Hilton Beach Community Hall, the Series isnow in its 19th season and in that time, has brought many ofCanada’s best-known musical talent right here to the Island.

This year’s lineup looks like yet another winner, starting offwith jazz and swing sensation Tia Brazda, followed by a re-turn performance by world-renowned Latin guitarist Jo-hannes Linstead, who combines the best of Flamenco withCuban, Middle Eastern and Latin American influences. Thencomes a truly Canadian musical experience as Lunch atAllen’s – four of Canada’s most successful artists, MurrayMcLauchlan, Cindy Church, Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas –

Is Ice Fishing Sustainable or Are We Risking Our Fish

Populations?By: Victoria Thomas, Central Algoma Freshwater [email protected]

ICE FISHING HAS BECOME a very popular winter activityover the past few decades. Generations ago, fishing was asummer activity and anglers had to wait out the winter be-fore they could return their boats to the water. With advancesin technology like snow machines and a growing love of icefishing, there are entire outfitters geared towards this chillypass-time. With the growing number of year-round anglers,an understanding of the potential environmental impacts isvital to ensuring we are able to keep this activity sustainablefor future generations.

Ice fishing requires an outdoors card and a fishing licencewhich can be purchased at various locations and are con-trolled by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Catchlimits must be strictly obeyed. By following the best practicesas outlined in the resource “Catch & Release”, unwanted orwrong size fish can be returned unharmed to the water. Please refer to the MNR’s guide before you head to the lake.

The Algoma Region is located in Fisheries Management Zone10. As such, ice fishing huts must be registered with the MNRand the registration number must be displayed on the out-side of the hut and at least 6.3 cm in height. The huts must beremoved no later than March 31, 2014.

There are over 40 types of bait fish permitted for use in Zone10 however it is important to know that there are many baitfish that are illegal as well. Additionally, even if the baitfish islegal, it is illegal to dispose of your unused baitfish into awater-body it was not sourced from. Dispose of any remain-ing baitfish in the garbage or freeze it for future use. Lurescontaining lead (such as lead sinkers) are harmful to fish andwater quality. Ensure you are not using toxic fishing equip-ment.

There are a number of unanswered questions regarding theimpacts of ice fishing including: the effect of year-round an-gling has on fish populations, the effects of noise pollutionon fish species, the effects of ice density changes on fish habi-tat (caused by vehicle traffic on frozen lakes), to name a few.

More research is needed to determine if in fact ice fishingposes an additional threat to our watersheds or if best prac-tices are implemented then anglers can continue to fish nomatter the season or the weather.

March is Red Cross Month and the organization is encourag-ing residents to get to know their local Red Cross. From emer-gencies to community support services, the Red Cross wantsto ensure those in need of assistance or those interested involunteering know what is available through the Red Crossright in this community.

“The Canadian Red Cross is here when you need us most, and this March we are making every effort to help people getto know us and get involved,” said Diane Lajambe, DistrictBranch Manager.

“People often think of the Red Cross as assisting internation-ally, particularly during times of disaster. What they may notknow is that the Red Cross is very active, each and every day, right here in our community,” said Ms. Lajambe.

For more than 100 years, the Canadian Red Cross has pro-vided help and hope to those facing conflict, disaster, injuryor illness, both in Canada and around the world. Every fourminutes, the Canadian Red Cross responds to a disaster inCanada providing support and comfort to those affected. TheRed Cross also offers a variety of services that help elderly andvulnerable members of the community remain living in theirown homes, including Meals on Wheels, Transportation and aHealth Equipment Loan Program. First aid, water safety, vio-lence and abuse prevention programs and workshops on hu-manitarian issues are also offered by the Red Cross.

In Sault Ste. Marie, the Red Cross offers First Aid, DisasterManagement, Seniors Transportation, Friendly Visiting andTelephone Assurance, Priority Assistance to Transition Home(PATH), Assisted Living for High Risk Seniors, Home Main-tenance, Community Kitchens and Community Gardens tomeet the needs of the community. Many of these programsare also offered in the District of Algoma. For more informa-tion, please contact the Sault Ste. Marie office.

Residents can help support the Red Cross by making a finan-cial donation or by becoming a volunteer. You can also offersupport by purchasing a Northern Raffle ticket before March16 for $10 or purchasing a bag of colourful Jelly Beans for $1at Algoma businesses supporting the Canadian Red Cross.
