Marker 32

The Casey Key Fish House Restaurant is a great little place with a very relaxed atmosphere that is accessible by both boat and car. There’s full bar service along with a wine list to help round out your meal. With the friendly staff and good service, you can’t beat an afternoon or evening at The Casey Key Fish House. This is the kind of place you come to Florida for! Since 2000 the Fish House has brought a laid back attitude to Casey Key. With Old Florida in mind, proprietor Jimmy Von Hubertz and Master Chef Willie Tia offer a casual way to dine by the waterside, with prices that are more than reasonable. Beginning at 11:30 customers enjoy their favorite beverage, a fresh sh sandwich, and hospitable service. The lunch menu is wonderful with old favorites like “Fish & Chips” and Daily Lunch Specials. As afternoon becomes evening, the Fish House presents an extensive dinner menu. Customers rave about the Almond Snapper and Ahi Tuna. But bring your appetite if you want to be dazzled by Willie’s mouthwatering Bouillabaisse. This Bar and Grill is one of only a handful of waterfront restaurants left in Sarasota County. Located right on the

water, there’s a tiki bar, an open air dining room and an outdoor patio where you can see boats pass by on the Intercoastal Waterway and Dryman Bay. The spectacular view allows you to watch the wildlife as it passes by. You may spot dolphins, manatee, pelicans, snowy egrets, an occasional heron and maybe mullets jumping out of the water. The Tiki Bar was recently rebuilt by Seminoles (It’s actually a Chickee Hut), and is a great place to kick back with your favorite libation. There is live music every Saturday and Sunday making this an ideal place to release your inner Parrot Head. Open 7 days a week 11:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m, Located at 801 Blackburn Point Rd Osprey, FL 34229 (941) 966-1901. Visit our website at www.caseykey shhouse.com Directions: From Sarasota follow US 41 south to Osprey. At Blackburn Point Road, turn right (west) and follow it past the “ ying bridge,” (a one lane bridge that rotates).

Turn left after the ying bridge into the Casey Key Fish House parking lot. (Location #13 on the Intracoastal Waterway Guide located on the back of the Souvenir Map) Coming by water? The Fish House is located at Marker 32 at the Blackburn Point Marina.

Siesta Key BeachSiesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Public BeachLifeguards on duty

“The Best Sand Beach in America” Siesta Beach is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous, crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the feet. Among the many awards it has earned are “The Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand Challange, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and the best beach in contiguous 48 states (Dr. Beach, 2009). Walking along, or swimming and playing in th Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something to do at Siesta Beach, and it’s within easy walking distance of the many shops and restaurants in Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach offers the same lush, white sands, azure waters and stunning sunsets, but it is relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access

road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe

adjacent Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers

home and treasure, especially after a storm.

|It’s a Family Affair at SKOB... What could be better than having oysters at an authentic Florida Oyster Bar? How about oysters and live entertainment seven nights a week. The Siesta Key Oyster Bar is better known as SKOB (much as we refer to this publication as SKIV). Located in the heart of Siesta Key Village, it is a family owned and operated business. J a c k , t h e f a t h e r , retired from Chicago to Sarasota. His daughters Jill and Beth, along with their families, were soon to follow. Once Jill found out the Siesta Key Oyster Bar was for sale, it didn’t take much to convince her sister and brother-in-law to join her quest to possess the true family beach bar. The SKOB was purchased by “The Family” in November of 2003. The family has grown beyond Jill, Geno, Beth and Keith; they

consider staff and regular customers as part of the family. Keeping true to their name, the SKOB’s specialty is oysters on the half shell. They even

have a Crustacean Happy Hour that happens every day from 3 – 6 dai ly featuring oysters on the half shell and Louisiana crawfish. The menu has a large assortment of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood entrees and a very neat kid’s menu. You can enjoy your meal on a large deck

overlooking Ocean Blvd or inside with the air-conditioning. The SKOB offers full bar service and has a late night Happy Hour featuring 2 for 1 drink specials starting at 10pm Sunday through

Thursday and 11pm Friday and Saturday. SKOB features live music each and every day! The groups play island favorites like “Margaritaville,” but they also have wide repertoires of popular tunes from today and yesterday. Who knows, you may even catch some great Delta Blues.

|A Taste of Italy on Siesta Key... Café Gabbiano is Siesta’s taste of Italy. Pietro Migliaccio and his wife Susan are the proprietors of the Cafe Gabbiano, the motto of which is “To Siesta Key through New York from Ischia with Love.” It’s located in Siesta Key Village’s Davidson Plaza. Pietro left the beautiful isle of Ischia in 1969 and relocated to New York, where h e w o r k e d i n several well-known restaurants. H e o p e n e d Mamma Lucia’s, a Brooklyn neighbor-hood cafe, in 1981, and in that same year the New York Times named i t Restaurant of the Year. Later, Mimi Sheridan gave it four

stars, and Pavarotti praised it on national television, lauding the best fettucine Alfredo he had ever tasted. Such is the pedigree of Cafe Gabbiano (which means “seagull” in Italian). Pietro’s brother Giorgio

now runs

Mamma Lucia’s, and Pietro and his family - sons Joe and Louis, and wife Susan - have relocated to Sarasota. Pietro, a classically trained chef who once cooked on the legendary Italian Line cruise

ships, opened the cafe in October 2003 and he’s been committed to maintaining the same high standards as Mamma Lucia’s. All pasta is cooked al dente, veal is hand cut, and fresh mozzarella is made daily. Refreshed and renewed from a month in his beloved island of Ischia, Cafe Gabbiano’s Pietro Migliaccio is back on Siesta with some new ideas - and honors - from his native land. A new, updated menu awaits you at this casual local favorite. Sitting on the shores of Little Sarasota, in Osprey, it is a picture of “Old Florida” and is surrounded by a rich heritage. Fresh seafood is a specialty here at the pub with its expanded menu offering new items like the Smoked Norwegian Salmon or a fresh

and citrus Cerviche. You can still order the pubs’ old stand-by

chips,

burgers and wings, enjoying your meal in the bar area or outside under the new Chickee Hut, while listening to live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The new hut is impressive, as you approach the grounds, with its thatched roof reaching a height of 30 feet. It was constructed by members of the Seminole tribe using traditional methods and was built over the existing outdoor deck enabling visitors to take advantage of the bay breezes

under the shade while providing great views of the bay. On those days when the winds kick up a bit, propane deck heaters

along with plastic

s h e e t i n g are set up to keep the chill away. So no matter the temperature or whether you come by land or sea, make it a point to stop by and experience a taste of “Old Florida”, at Marker #38.

Island Living Real Estatewww.siestakeyislander.com 941.539.0205 Season 2011 Island Visitor 15

I’ve always thought that there was something special about living on a tropical island. I imagined going to work in shorts and a casual shirt everyday and thought it would be like a nonstop vacation.

What we found was that the simplistic wonder of waking up to balmy breezes everyday and having the warmth of the sun kissing your back as you walk or bike to work is something that must be experienced. Coming from Wisconsin (I admit I’m a cheese-head) I don’t think we will ever take these near perfect conditions for granted. And yes, wearing

shorts and a casual shirt everyday really is just like a nonstop vacation for me. Are there any bad days in paradise? I’m sure there are, but for us we’ve stopped searching for that perfect place because we’ve found ours right here on Siesta Key. It’s so close to the

places to shop both on and around the island. The casual and friendly attitudes of the islanders make us feel like we’ve just come home.

If you’ve been thinking about buying a paradise getaway, now is the time for some great deals. Talk to any one of our many real estate agents and see for yourself. You, too,

Carrying an extremely wide range of groceries, sundries, beer, wine, delicatessen items and fresh-cut meat – as well as practically anything else you can think of – the grocery caters to the needs of both residents and visitors on Siesta Key. The store is particularly well-known for providing good value, personal service and a warm, friendly environment. “We really want to provide for the very diverse needs and wants of our customer base,” explains Nancy. “If someone asks us for a product we don’t carry, we try very hard to get it for them, and we are almost always successful. We also carry a large number of specialty items that you

we are always looking for new, interesting products our customers will enjoy.” “One of our goals is to make sure that grocery shopping never becomes a reason for anyone to cross back over to the mainland,” says Nancy. “Once you are on the island, you should be able to stay in that island frame of mind, even when you need a nice cabernet, a great steak to grill or food for your pet. We are on Siesta Key and our store maintains the ambiance of the Key, but we have just about any grocery item that our customers need.” Crescent Beach Grocery is a service-driven business say its owners. “We want to be the best small grocery in Sarasota in terms of the range and quality of the products we offer our customers and the clean, friendly environment we provide. We are convenient, but we don’t charge convenience store prices; we are comprehensive without being impersonal and we carry quality products that take a backseat to none. We also offer a shopping service and delivery for a nominal fee. No other grocery around here does that.” In addition to the complete line of

FIRST PLACE WINNER:BEST New England Clam Chowder

To say we’re proud is an understatement. Going to Newport, RI to compete for the title of Best New England Clam Chowder was a long shot at best. Many thought we were “Nuts!” We constantly heard: “No matter how good the chowder is, the people of New England are not going to allow the title of “Best Chowder” to go to Florida!” They had history on their side, too. After 26 years of competition, only one other restaurant outside of New England had taken home the title. It’s kind of like a New York restaurant winning the “Best Grouper Sandwich” award at a Florida Seafood Festival.

We had faith though. We knew our chowder was the best, and we proved it to them. After two days and serving up over 120 gallons of our chowder to some 15,000 “chowder heads,” the people voted. Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar took First Place!

We believe winning is a testament to just how good our food is here at Captain Curt’s and to the dedication of our staff in preparing and serving it. During the festival, the staff truly “went the extra mile!” They worked hard to bring home the title. We are so proud and happy to have them. We couldn’t have won without their dedication and hard work!

Stop by Captain Curt’s today and enjoy the best New England Clam Chowder in the World! And meet the great people that brought the title home to Siesta Key!
