At Audley we are wholeheartedly devoted to offering you first class service from the moment we start planning your trip until after your return. If you feel that our standards at any time drop below your expectations or you have

any suggestions about how we could improve our service, then please contact the Southeast Asia Manager, Natalie Lewis on 01993 838 101 or email [email protected] We may record telephone calls to ensure quality of service and for training purposes.

After returning to the UK, Jack interspersed working in recruitment and sales and marketing with numerous extended visits to Indochina and Thailand. Meet our Indonesia Specialists

Meet our specialists 5

We have a team of seven Indonesia specialists, Jack Tydeman, Sarah Howard, Angela Jordan, Caroline Parry, Jacqui Brooks, Alex Ross and Glynn Hunt. We're passionate about Indonesia and have all covered the main islands, and many of the smaller ones, over a period of several years. We regularly return to keep up to date with developments. Recent trips have involved climbing volcanoes as well as discovering new beach properties. The specialists are managed by David Singleton who is relatively new to Indonesia but is enjoying learning about the differences between the many islands.

Introduction to our Island Hopping Indonesia tour

6 Introduction to our Island Hopping Indonesia tour

• Introduction to the tour

With years of experience operating in Indonesia, we were delighted with the success of our first island hopping group tour in 2012, and so have decided to run the tour again, with just a few alterations. This tour takes in some of our favourite places from over the years. Indonesia is so vast that even visiting the four main places this tour takes in, you will still travel some 1,200+ miles once in the country! For this year we have decided to start the tour in Bali. You will visit the beautiful town of Ubud, known for art, music, architecture and dance then explore the quieter north of the island, including the stunning Lake Bratan and a stay at the remote Menjangan Resort in Bali Barat National Park. Moving on to eastern Java you will visit the stunning Mount Ijen before heading to the spice markets and mosques of Surabaya. The colourful East Java anniversary will take place while you are in Surabaya and you will see the procession and carnival of floats. Sure to be a highlight is Tanjung Puting National Park in southern Kalimantan, home to over 5,000 wild orang-utan and numerous other animals. You will spend three days exploring here, making your way through the narrow backwaters under the rainforest canopy. The tour ends with a visit to Yogyakarta in central Java, the cultural heart of the island. Visit the Sultan's Palace and watch a performance of the Ramayana ballet at the magnificent Prambanan temple. Your final day is spent at Borobudur, the largest Buddhist relic in the word, where you will explore this awe-inspiring 8th century monument.

• Airline choice Singapore Airlines are considered to be one of the best airlines in the sky. Their economy class took first place in the Guardian and Observer Travel Awards 2011. In economy class you can enjoy a 32" seat pitch and 1,000 on demand entertainment options are available on KrisWorld, presented on a 10.6-inch personal screen with the highest resolution in the sky, and the largest in its class. In business class their seats offer unrivalled comfort with angled lie flat seats or fully flat seats (depending on the aircraft). In suite class you have the ultimate flight experience with a private cabin. If you need to fly with a different carrier for any reason (eg airmiles, preference, route) we can arrange alternative flights for you. We can also operate the trip without international flights if you prefer.

• Domestic airlines Please see the information on page 13 regarding domestic flights within Indonesia.

• Home truths We aim to provide accurate and detailed information and to make you aware of the less positive aspects of the journey you are undertaking, some facts you should be aware of are outlined below:

• Money Indonesian Rupiah (Rp) is widely available in the UK and is the only currency used in Indonesia (with the exception of your visa on arrival). You can take up to Rp 5,000,000 in to the country without declaring it and as long as you are sensible with keeping it in hotel safes or locked in your luggage then we would suggest this limit is best used. ATMs are unreliable and have small limits for withdrawals; you can obtain money from hotels on your card but they also normally have small limits and there will be charges; banks have irregular hours and the process of changing money is time consuming. Some restaurants and shops will take card but not all. Most of the hotels you are staying in will take all major credit cards.

• Single Travellers We especially welcome single travellers on our tours. You have two options, you can choose to share a room with another single traveller on the tour and pay the standard tour price or you can choose to guarantee sole occupancy of a room, in which case a supplement is payable.

• Dining All meals indicated will be taken as a group. Some will be in hotels, some local restaurants and in Kalimantan all lunches will be buffets on board the klotok boat. Facilities in local restaurants are basic so be prepared.

Introduction to our Island Hopping Indonesia tour

Introduction to our Island Hopping Indonesia tour 7

• Group size The group size is kept to a maximum of 16, this ensures that the trip is a more personal experience and that you can always hear and speak to your guides. The small group size also ensures that your experience of a particular sight is not marred by presence of too many people.

• Extending your trip You have the option to extend your trip in Indonesia. The best option is to drive from Yogyakarta to Semarang and then take the flight over to the island hideaway of Kura Kura. You could also return to Bali or nearby Lombok for some beach time. You may also choose to break the journey to and from Indonesia with a stop over in Singapore. On any extension, you will be looked after by our carefully selected local agent.

• Travelling around You will be accompanied throughout the trip by a western tour leader. An experienced English-speaking local guide will also meet you on arrival in Bali and you will have a local guide for each area you travel to. Our local guides are carefully selected for their in-depth knowledge, interpretation, and ability to manage large groups as well as their skills as charming hosts.

• Health & fitness requirements To ensure that all participants get the most out of the tour, it is important that you are fully aware of the level of activity and fitness and medical health required to successfully complete this itinerary. Please read this dossier carefully prior to confirming your place on the tour, and having established the facts, it is your responsibility to contact us with any concerns regarding individual levels of fitness, health or ability. Please be aware that our tour leaders have the right to exclude people from the tour if they feel they are not sufficiently fit, healthy or able to complete the tour without affecting its safety, comfort or smooth progress. If you would like to discuss any of these issues further please call us on 01993 838 110 to discuss in more detail.

• Activity level : medium A reasonably good level of fitness is required for this trip and you should be physically active. There are a few elements which involve getting in and out of boats or walking on rough unsurfaced paths and so a certain degree of physical dexterity will be required. An experienced guide will be on hand to help anyone should they need it. Some excursions also involve an option to climb steps or paths which may be steep, loose and/or wet underfoot. You should also be aware and prepared for the following on this trip: * High altitude - Mount Ijen sits at around 2,300m and some warm clothing is needed (hat, gloves, jumper and trousers suggested - you can layer up as needed). The trek is quite arduous, so you will need to be relatively fit if you want to make it all the way down to the sulphur lake. * Cycling - the cycling tour of Jatiluwih can easily be missed out, but cycling through the paddy fields is a great experience, and apart from one more challenging section it is mostly downhill. * In Kalimantan a certain level of dexterity is required for boarding the klotok boats. Please also be aware that during the day, the bathroom facilities on board are very basic. * Some of the roads in Indonesia are poorly maintained making some journeys quite bumpy. * It may on occasion be necessary to carry your own luggage through airports or from the vehicles to hotels and vice versa.

• Expenses Most costs are covered on this trip and you are only likely to need extra spending money for laundry, tips, drinks and a handful of meals that are not already included. We will provide tipping guidelines in your final itinerary pre-travel. Wine will perhaps be your biggest expense as it is taxed at over 400% in Indonesia. In Tanjung Puting alcohol is not available as this is a dry area of the country.

Visas

Indonesia UK and US citizens can obtain a 30 day visa on arrival for US$25 per person. All other nationalities should check with the Indonesian Embassy. As with most countries your passport must be valid for six months after the date of departure from Indonesia - this is strictly enforced, you may also need one unstamped double page free in your passport. If you are staying longer than 30 days in Indonesia it is possible for us to arrange a visa in advance for you - please speak to your specialist for more details.

Important Note: We cannot under any circumstances guarantee that your visa application for any country will be accepted. However, in our experience refusals are extremely rare. Visa information is given in good faith and is accurate to the best of our knowledge.

Why travel with us? 11

The New Mill, our offices on the outskirts of Witney in west Oxfordshire Reputation and quality Well over 80% of our clients have travelled with us in the past or have had Audley recommended to them. When you book with us you are assured of quality arrangements if only for the fact that we simply cannot afford to risk our excellent reputation. Our service has been recognised by the readers of well-known publications including the Guardian & Observer, the Daily Telegraph and Wanderlust magazine, where we have consistently featured in their ‘best tour operator’ awards for a number of years. Personal service We are committed to offering you a very personal service, with all your arrangements being handled by one country specialist. They will remain your one point of contact and will take responsibility for the smooth operation of your trip. They are supported by a team of specialists for that region and a professional administration and management team. From the moment you contact us, we are here to answer your questions accurately and honestly, be they about specific arrangements or any more general queries you may have. We are experienced travellers with a thorough and in-depth knowledge of our specialist destinations, and the benefit of this experience is yours throughout. When we do not know the answer to a question we will endeavour to find out and get back to you as soon as possible.

Quality service when you are travelling We take a good deal of care when choosing our travel partners overseas, taking into account their quality of service, guides and vehicles. We have built up many long-standing relationships, ensuring that they deliver the level of service demanded by Audley clients. Our local guides and drivers, where appropriate, are the people you will meet. In many cases we know them personally, in all cases we ensure that they are of the highest calibre. They are there to do much more than show you specific sights and provide factual information. They will be able to tell you about local life, culture, cuisines and customs; and, where applicable, act as translator. In certain parts of the world a specialist guide is more appropriate, for example, a wildlife expert.

First class guides A smooth journey We have procedures in place for dealing quickly and efficiently with mishaps from minor flight time alterations to more fundamental changes. If problems do occur we will rapidly rearrange your itinerary to make best use of your time given the changed circumstances, not simply cancel part of your trip or leave you sitting in an airport waiting for hours for a rescheduled flight. Importantly, in these situations we will do everything possible to minimise any extra costs involved – in the vast majority of cases no extra charges will be made. If a problem does occur while you are travelling you can contact us on our 24 hour number. We will do everything in our power to rectify the problem immediately rather than allow it to spoil your trip.

Detailed travel documents Approximately two to three weeks before you travel we will send you all your travel documents presented in a convenient travel organiser. As well as your full itinerary and travel documents, there will also be additional information such as recommended restaurants and practical tips. A few days before you travel your specialist will call you to have a final talk through your itinerary and answer any last minute questions you may have.

Responsible travel We have a firm commitment to minimising the environmental and social impact of travel, and strive to ensure that a visit from an Audley client has a positive effect on the destination. We have a firm commitment to the principles of ‘responsible travel’ and have been awarded AITO 5 star status (the highest achievable) for our policies and practises. We continue to work with AITO, and a number of other bodies, to improve our policies. For more details please refer to our website (www.audleytravel.com/rt) where you will find details of our responsible travel policy and also our Travellers’ Code. If you are particularly interested in these issues, your country specialist will be able to tell you more. Legal liability We are a UK company and hence must fully comply with English law. When booking with us you can rest assured that your arrangements are carefully planned as we have a reputation to maintain and are legally liable for any omissions or negligent acts. You may not find you have this level of reassurance if you make your own travel arrangements independently.

Introduction to Indonesia

12 Introduction to the region

Key facts:

Population: 229.97 million

Land area: 1.92 million square kilometres

Major languages spoken: Indonesian, English, Javanese

Currency: Indonesian Rupiah

Time difference: GMT+7-9 hours

Capital city: Jakarta

Introduction

Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands with volcanic peaks covered with terraced rice-paddies, and low-lying atolls ringed by glorious beaches. Unified only by a common currency and a basic trade language, the Indonesian people are a mixture of many different cultures and religions whose costumes and customs vary between islands and even between valleys. From Stone Age tribes hidden in Sulawesi's remote forests to devout Hindus making their daily sacrifices at Bali's countless temples and shrines, life here proceeds at a different pace. The country's attractions are endless. Though fringed by wonderful beaches, Bali gets even better inland, its mellow, devout population politely dismissing the trappings of the material world. The islands of Nusa Tenggara, including Lombok, Sumba and Komodo are less visited, with natural untouched beauty and even better beaches creating perfect tropical hideaways. Java is at the heart of Indonesian life, its regional cities bright with dance and music, ancient temples set amongst terraced rice paddies, and active volcanoes. The jungles of Kalimantan and Sumatra offer a last refuge to the endangered orang-utan, while remote Sulawesi is almost a country in itself, with ancient tribal cultures, great diving and an untouched inland world of forests and volcanoes. Domestic flights within Indonesia: It is worth being aware that flights within Indonesia often do not follow their schedules leading to delays on the ground. In a worst case scenario amendments to the airline and route you are travelling will be necessary. Our local representatives will be there to assist you if you encounter any of these problems as they are best placed to help you at the time. There are a number of airlines within Indonesia that have been put on an aviation blacklist by the EU as a result of an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audit. The airlines on this list are banned from operating within the EU as the EU has concluded that they are operating below essential safety levels. For domestic flights in Indonesia, Audley will always endeavour to use EU approved airlines such as Garuda Airlines. However, in order to reach some parts of Indonesia, such as Kalimantan and all islands east of Lombok, the only option is to use an airline that appears on this list. If you do not wish to use an airline that appears on this list please let your specialist know and they will talk through the alternative itineraries that are available to you. It is essential that you check the validity of your travel insurance if you wish to go ahead with an itinerary that includes one of these airlines. Ramadan and Idul Fitri 2013 (July/August): Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and starts on approximately 9th July 2013 lasting one month until Idul Fitri on 8th August 2013. The cultural experience of travelling during Ramadan can be interesting and the impact is small in most areas. The resounding feedback from previous clients travelling at this time is that it is a not a problem unless touring in the week before and after Idul Fitri (also known as Hari Raya, Aid Al Mubarokh Day or Lebaran Day) which is the celebration at the end of the fasting period. During this period you should expect significantly longer travel times due to the crowded roads, trains and airports; key sights such as Borobudur, Mount Bromo and Bali's southern beaches (as well as the road and ferry routes linking Bali to Java) will be much busier than normal. Please also note that you may struggle to find restaurants open during the day in the most remote areas of Java where there are only Muslim communities - this is a very rare occurrence. Yellow fever: Please note that if you are travelling to Indonesia from a country that is considered to have a risk of yellow fever by the World Health Organisation (WHO) then you may be asked to provide proof of vaccination against the disease upon arrival. Please see the 'populations at risk' section of the WHO website for further details and consult with your GP for up to date advice. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs100/en/index.html.

Bali introduction

People say that the Balinese people have reached self-content. They are proud of having preserved their unique Hindu culture against the advance of Islam, the dominant religion throughout Indonesia. This is still reflected in day to day life and can be seen in the numerous ceremonies, festivals and magnificent temples and palaces. The Balinese are skilled artisans and are also noted for their traditional dance, the distinctive music of the gamelan and for their skills in weaving cloth. The rise of tourism on Bali since artists began flocking here in the 60's has not changed local customs and still today it is the law in Bali that no building can be higher than a palm tree. Roads can be busy especially around the southern beaches and on the way to Ubud but there are still quiet spots of the island to be explored as well. Bali can be whatever you want it to be and you will have your own reasons for choosing to come here. By making a small effort to speak to hotel staff, or locals you might run in to on the beach or around the villages you can open up a whole new world. Traditional temple ceremonies, cock fights, cremations, weddings, sacrifices and local homes can all be seen with help from friendly local people but you will need to step out of your comfort zone to witness these. With no set schedules these types of activities are very difficult to arrange in advance and those that are pre-arranged generally cater to western tastes. We have had many happy clients return and by and large their most memorable times have been the unplanned moments that capture your passion for travel. Speak to your hotel general manager if you are struggling to make contacts, generally they have spent a long time on Bali and will be close enough to their staff to make an introduction to some one who can help. We have a team of local guides that can also be of assistance so please do speak to them about the type of tour you are looking for when you meet. Itineraries can be flexible and free time is there to be filled so do make the most of your time on this beautiful island.

Ubud introduction

Western artists and intellectuals began visiting Ubud in the 1930s and aided in the expansion of the local Balinese arts and crafts scene. From this time Ubud became known in Bali for its art, music, architecture and dance. It is located in the centre of the island, within 90 minutes of the popular south coast and a couple of hours from the quieter beaches of the north, east and west coasts. The central region of Bali is arguably the most scenic and Ubud is an ideal place to base yourself if you are planning on exploring all that Bali has to offer away from the coast. Cycle around the paddy field covered foothills of a nearby volcano, immerse yourself in village life, or visit one of the island's iconic temples. The slightly cooler temperatures in Ubud mean exploring the gallery lined streets and markets is a little more comfortable than on the coast, however being located

at a higher altitude you will see more rain here, particularly in the afternoons when tropical showers occur year round. Over recent years the popularity of Ubud has increased and there are many hotel options on offer. The more central areas have the advantage of being closer to the restaurants, markets and galleries whereas hotels on the outskirts generally have the advantage of stunning valley views and more tranquil settings. The best markets and galleries tend to be in the villages around Ubud and are best reached by taxi or on a tour. The nearby villages of Tegallang and Jati are noted for their woodcarvings and the village of Celuk is home to numerous jewellers, some of whom will custom-make pieces. South of Tabanan, in Pejaten, one can find traditional pottery.

Your first stop on this full day trip is in Ubud itself where you will have the opportunity to browse through the galleries of prominent Balinese and European artists at one of the town's excellent museums. There are several good ones to choose from, our current favourite is the Neka museum. You can watch gold and silver craftsmen at work in the village of Celuk, visit the woodcarving galleries in Mas and test your bartering skills in the local market. You will also visit Ubud Palace which is still home to the local royal family. You can walk around most of the large compound with its traditional buildings. On leaving Ubud you will then travel along the back roads passing stunning rice terraces in Tegallalang, visiting Tampak Siring with its holy springs and finally stopping at Batuan to see some traditional Balinese houses. During the day you will be taken for lunch in a local restaurant.

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali, attracting artists from all over the world since the 1930s. As a consequence there are some excellent art galleries scattered around the town. One of our favourites is the Museum Puri Lukisan (The Palace of Fine Arts) located on Jalan Raya near the centre of town. This art gallery is one of the oldest in the town. Established in the 1950s, it illustrates the progression of Balinese art in a stunning setting surrounded by a beautiful garden. Another interesting gallery is the Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women which sells excellent quality paintings by local female artists. This gallery is located just along from the

market in the direction of the post office on Jalan Raya. The scenery around Ubud is spectacular; steep sided gorges with terraced paddy fields lead down to fast flowing rapids offering fantastic panoramas. If you are feeling energetic there are many local companies that organise white water rafting, mountain bike tours or paddy field walks, if not just take your time stopping off for a drink in one of the many delightful side cafes. A must whilst you are in Ubud is to go to one of the many traditional dances. Balinese dances are highly symbolic, with every movement from the dancer's head to toes being carefully choreographed to convey the storyline and the nature of the character being performed. The stories are easy to follow with a brief outline of the story given to you on arrival. Elaborate costumes and masks help you understand who represents good and evil. Your hotel will have a list of places where dance performances are occurring. Ubud is also a shoppers paradise from the bustling Pasar Seni (art market) full of sarongs, silks, scarves, carvings and jewellery to the more established shops selling art work such as carved masks, puppets, painted flowers and fruits and paintings with elaborately carved wooden frames. Food is a major part of Balinese life and there are numerous cookery schools. PAON and Casa Luna are two of our favourites and they come highly recommended from staff and clients. We can book these in advance for you or you can try and secure a place when there, but they can be fully booked in the high season. There are many more ad hoc options advertised around town that you may also wish to try. The Balinese regularly bathe in the sacred waters of the 10th century Pura Tirta Empul to heal their body and purify their mind, not to cool down or to hang out. The ritual includes offerings, prayers and blessings from the temple priests. It is located around thirty minutes east of Ubud and you can ask your guide to go via here if you have a an excursion or transfer booked with us going this direction or alternatively get there under your own arrangements. There is a pool for public bathing (bring a sarong and swimwear) which has springs gushing out through waterspouts. You can enjoy captivating views of the exquisite twin shrines and the split gate at the temple premise from the main courtyard. On your way out you may wish to avoid the obligatory tables filled with T-shirts and other cheap trinkets being sold by going out through another route.

Balinese dances. The Kecak dance is taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana, which tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sita, who has been kidnapped by the evil King of Lanka, Rahwana, and somehow with the help of the white monkey army, Rama rescues his wife and defeats the evil Rahwana. It is unusual because it has no musical accompaniment like many other Indonesian dances do, instead, a troupe of over 50 men serve as the chorus, providing the music for the story in a series of constant vocal chants that change with the mood of the actors and making a wondrous cacophony of synchronized "chak-achak-achak" clicking sounds while swaying their bodies and waving their hands. From that chanting noise of "chak-achak-achak", came the name of the dance "Kecak". The dance lasts roughly an hour and after the dance, you will be taken for dinner.

Ubud to the Menjangangroup tour transfer

Today's sightseeing transfer will take most of the day and show you some of Bali's stunning sights. This morning you will take a scenic drive to the village of Jatiluwih, about 20 kilometres north of Tabanan, in Bali's western region. Famous for the magnificent panorama of it's rice field terraces, the word Jatiluwih literally means "really, really beautiful". Once you stop you will be kitted out by your guide - please check you are happy with your bike set up before you set off. The route you cycle will take you along a mix of quiet roads, dirt tracks and mud paths through the paddy fields. You will pass through small local villages where you will see cages of fighting cocks, coffee and rice being dried out under the sun, and local people just going about their day to day work. Views of the stunning paddy fields in this area are plentiful and you will feel miles away from the hustle and bustle of southern Bali. Along the way you will pass several temples so please bring a sarong (or tell your guide at the start if you don't have one and he can find you one to buy for a minimal cost in the village) if you would like to visit. You will also cycle past traditional hot springs that you are welcome to try if you have brought your swimwear, the setting is quite unique and you won't often get the chance to do this. Although the cycling is primarily flat or down hill there are two steep uphill sections that would test anyone in this heat so there is no shame in getting off to push for a couple of minutes. If you would prefer not to cycle then you can still see the scenery from the comfort of the support vehicle. After your cycling you will be taken for lunch (included) in a nearby restaurant that boasts excellent views of the area. After lunch you will continue your journey. As you pass the town to Baturiti the roads start to wind their way up the slopes and the summits of Mount Batukaru and the eight other +1,500m peaks on your left begin to feel very close! After around 90 minutes you should reach the cool mountain area of Danau Bratan. Pura Ulun Danau Bratan is a very beautiful and important temple that was founded in the 17th century and dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the waters. It is built on a small island near the edge of a lake and is one of the most iconic images in Bali. Enjoy some time stretching your legs around the lake and finding the perfect spot to take a photograph before the leg to Pemuteran which sees you travel along a mountain ridge overlooking the twin lakes of Danau Bayan and Tamblingan before make the descent past beautiful Balinese villages to the north coast. The journey time from Ubud to Jatiluwih is around 90 minutes; it is another hour to Lake Bratan. Pemuteran is about two hours further on and from here it is around 30 minutes to Bali Barat National Park.

Bali Barat introduction

West Bali National Park (more commonly known as Bali Barat) covers around 75,000 hectares of grass land, coastal savannah and tropical waters. The area dominates western Bali and is one of the few places on the island where you really can 'get away from it all'. For nature lovers the park is home to more than 200 species of plants as well as leaf monkey, macaque and mouse deer and these can be spotted on jungle treks, horseback and mountain biking trips. Bali Barat is home to the ultra rare Bali starling, only found in this part of Bali there are thought to be less than a dozen left in the world. Off the coast the clear waters are arguably the best Indonesia, with Menjangan Island easily accessible for diving or snorkelling trips.

Bali Barat National Park to Ijengroup tour transfer

From the Menjangan you will be transferred to the ferry harbour at Gilimanuk. You will take the public ferry across the Bali Straits to Ketapang on Java. From here you will be taken to your accommodation at Ijen. The whole journey should take about three hours depending on the ferry times.

Java introduction

Java (or Jawa as it's locally known) is a study in contrasts: traditional and modern; rich and poor; spiritual and worldly stand side by side on this bustling island that is home to over 130 million people. In fact almost two thirds of Indonesia's population live here on an island that covers just 7% of the country's total land mass. Many cities have the look of a modern metropolis but still have patches of sugar cane, water is sold by the can and most of the hotels have experienced some sort of scandal or revolution, or a visit from Charlie Chaplin or Joseph Conrad. The temples and volcanoes are some of the most spectacular you will see and away from the cities the horizon is always pimpled with mountains and you are never far from the rice, which glows like green fire.

Ijen Plateau introduction

Ijen Plateau is part of the larger Baluran National Park who's major draw card is the stunning Kawah Ijen, a beautiful sulphur lake which glistens turquoise. Apart from the impressive crater climb there is a large reserve of wooded savannah with a population of monkey, deer, wild buffalo, wild oxen and leopard. The scenery is some of the most beautiful in Java and there are several coffee plantations to walk around as well as small villages you can visit.

After an early breakfast you will drive through the rural countryside around Mount Ijen past many clove and coffee plantations to Pal Tuding (ranger post), from where the trek begins. To reach Ijen Plateau can take approximately two hours and the walk is very steep at times. You will trek through twisty shady trails until clearing the tree line and finding yourself with wonderful panoramic views across the Bali straits. The pathway then leads you to a spectacular view point for the eerie turquoise crater lake. Wafts of multicoloured smoke drift upwards from beneath you and all along the shoreline are bright yellow sulphur deposits creating a barren but beautiful landscape. Whilst here you will see Indonesian sulphur miners who

descend into the crater and return with around 80 kilos of heavy sulphur on their shoulders. Having experienced the panorama from Ijen Plateau you will descend back to Pal Tuding where your vehicle is waiting. The walk/trek is steep at times and demands some care and attention. Walking boots or trainers with good grip are ideal. Please note that in the dry season, the path can become very slippery due to a layer of loose rock and dust. Please take great care when descending from the crater rim. If you would prefer not to take part in the trek you can spend the day relaxing at the hotel.

Surabaya introduction

The capital of east Java, Surabaya has a population of some three million people and is an important economic and industrial city second only to Jakarta. The town is a contrast of new and old, and strolling around the old part of town makes for an interesting diversion, particularly with a trip to the spice market and Mesjid Ampel mosque in the Arab Quarter. The city is lively but has relatively few points of interest for the visitor and an overnight stay is normally enough to satisfy unless your trip is timed to head over to Madura Island where you may be lucky enough to watch the bull racing (generally August - October, weekends only).

As a mixed cultural city you first visit the Chinese Quarter and have the opportunity to wander around the old shop houses. The Arab Quarter is the next on the list and is the only organised Arab Quarter in Indonesia. Within the Quarter and possibly the highlight is a typical Arabian market where exotic vegetables and spices spill out from the crowded stalls. The House of Sampoerna is a cigarette museum which provides an interesting experience. You will have lunch in a local restaurant. The itinerary for today may be subject to some changes to ensure that you also have time to take in the highlights of the East Java Anniversary festival.

Kalimantan introduction

Covering the lower two thirds of Borneo, the third largest island in the world, Kalimantan is known as the land of a thousand rivers. The main street of town is usually a river and there are probably more boats that cars. Although many cities are pretty faceless 'oil towns' the main draw card for Audley clients is Tanjung Puting National Park - arguably the best place in the world to search for wild orang-utan in the dense rainforest. Due to the nature of domestic travel in Indonesia, flights to Kalimantan are often delayed or rerouted. If your flights need to be changed to an alternative route then we will be able to obtain a refund for your original flight tickets however there may be an additional charge for the new routing (ie if you need to fly via another destination it would require two flights and therefore cost more). In this case then there may be a small extra cost that we would need to take from you to cover this charge before you travel or if you have departed this can be paid to our local agents. We will of course inform you as soon as we hear about any changes and can discuss the options with you.

Pangkalan Bun introduction

Pangkalan Bun is the gateway to Tanjung Puting National Park and a pleasant stop over if travelling elsewhere in Kalimantan. This tidy town with its wide streets, attractive residences and warm and friendly locals creates a convivial and appealing atmosphere. Please note this is a dry town.

the Java sea and you will pass several trade and passenger boats, as well as the simple shacks that the Dayak tribes have built on the waterfront. After about 30 minutes you will escape the river traffic and head up a tributary called the 'Big' Sekonyer River. This river forms the border of Tanjung Puting National Park and slowly narrows and fills with mangroves and palms as you journey along. The open upper deck allows you to soak up the sunshine and look out on to the rainforest where you may see proboscis monkey, crab-eating macaque, false gharial crocodile and perhaps even your first orang-utan! On route you are likely to see all manner of wildlife so having your binoculars and camera handy is a good idea!

Tanjung Puting introduction

Staying in Tanjung Puting is something truly memorable. Making your way through the national park, along its narrow backwaters under the jungle canopy, you get an instant feeling of being back to nature. You are captivated completely by the purity of the air, the openness of the night sky with the most remarkable view of the Milky Way, the magnificence and dignity of the gentle orang-utan, the thundering downpours that instantly cool the air, and the clarity of the brilliant crimson sunsets. The national park itself is mainly composed of low lying swampy terrain with a complex pattern of black water rivers running through it. Mangrove swamps line the rivers with the forest canopy developing away from here up to 150 feet high. Short treks through the forest generally follow ranger's trails but if you want to explore further a field you will be creating your own path through some of Borneo's most pristine jungle. Most people visit Tanjung Puting to see the 5,000 plus orang-utan that are spread wide across the 4,000 square kilometre park. There are three feeding stations in the park and they all provide supplementary food to the orang-utan. This means they cannot remain wholly dependent on the feeding sites and are instead encouraged to explore further a field. The orang-utan that do come to the feeding sites are generally mothers with young offspring and recently released animals that have been rescued or have been orphaned after loggers killed their parents. The feeding takes place on platforms a few metres above the forest floor so they don't feel so vulnerable. You will sit on fallen trunks only about 10 metres away from them and will have rangers along side you. The orang-utan may come to the platform from anywhere in the jungle (there are no areas of the park fenced off for rehabilitation) so you have to be aware to move quickly if you are between them and the food, or indeed if you are between a male and a female. Your guide and rangers will be there to look out for you but these animals can be unpredictable when agitated and they have an extremely long reach and strong grip that has injured people in the past. The park is generally seen as being much less touristy than Bukit Lawang in Sumatra and Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. This is largely down to the difficulties in reaching the park and the fact that Dr Galdikas who campaigned for the Park's opening in 1982 has been a strong influence in protecting the area from development. This all means that the park is an amazing experience for those who want to enjoy the rainforest as it was meant to be seen; unspoilt, tranquil areas home to a fascinating array of animal and plant life. Aside from the orang-utan, some of the larger animal species that you may see in Tanjung Puting include proboscis monkey, gibbon, rare clouded leopard, huge wild boar, civet, Malaysian sun bear, crocodile, several kinds of deer and a type of wild cattle known as banteng. For the bird lover there are over 220 species here, including the symbolic hornbill, kingfisher, white egret and several other endangered water birds. There are also numerous types of fish, leech, snake, frog and other reptilian life lurking in the swampy grounds.

Sensible clothing is of course a must for your time in the rainforest with well worn boots high on the order as heavy rains may fall at any time of the year. This is a malarial zone so tablets should be taken and 'deet' spray and other prevention methods are strongly recommended. Camp Leakey: Camp Leakey is located within Tanjung Puting National Park and was established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas. It was named after the legendary anthropologist, Louis Leakey, who was both mentor and an inspiration to Dr. Galdikas as well as Drs. Jane Goodall and Diane Fossey. Originally consisting of just two huts, Camp Leakey is now an assemblage of permanent wooden structures designed to provide a base for scientists, staff, students and PHPA guards. Over the years, Camp Leakey has supported the research efforts of dozens of scientists and students including graduate students from Indonesia (Univeristas Nasional & Universitas Gajamada) and North America. Projects have ranged from research into orang-utan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkey behaviour and ecology, to studies of orang-utan sign language abilities and cognition, to leech behaviour and riverine ecology. A 200 metre boardwalk made of ironwood was constructed by the provincial government in the 1970's to bypass the seasonal swamps that can isolate the high ground at Camp Leakey from the river. Used by orang-utan as well as people, the boardwalk may be the first place you will meet one of Camp Leakey's "bicultural" great ape residents. These orang-utan are the last of the ex-captive orang-utan released into the nearby forest during the 1970's and early 1980's. Now, orang-utan rehabilitation is conducted in other areas of the park, but the Camp Leakey residents, mostly females and their offspring, spend their time both in the forest and in Camp. They provide visitors a chance to view free-ranging orang-utan close-up. If you wish to donate to or join the Orang-utan Foundation or just learn more about their work please visit www.orangutan.org.

Accompanied by your guide and a local park ranger you will walk deeper in to the jungle along small tracks. You will probably be joined by a limited number of other visitors at the feeding site where you can witness these huge creatures from just metres away. Return to the post where you can visit the small orphanage they have before boarding the boat around 11am and cruising further upriver. You will soon turn off the 'Big' Sekonyer and on to the 'Small' Sekonyer or Crocodile River. As the name might suggest, this is a small river with lots of crocodiles. Your journey to the famed Camp Leakey takes about two hours and you will have lunch prepared on route by your boat crew. Fresh fish/chicken/beef/vegetables and fruit are made into fantastic Indonesian dishes for you and drinks are available at all times. Arrive in to the famed Camp Leakey (Post 3) around 2pm and take your time looking around the research centre and meeting some of the scientists, researchers and local rangers....as well as the resident orang-utan! Again you will trek further in to the forest for the feeding session where you may like to try and spot the orang-utan from the family photos they have on the walls of the research centre. After the feeding you may like to take a short trek through the forest or you can head straight back to your boat to return to Rimba Lodge. The journey home is downstream and takes about two hours and 30 minutes. **Depending on recent wildlife sightings and local conditions the itinerary for these two days is subject to change.

Pondok Tanggui orang-utan post, Pesalat rainforest station and Tanjung Harapan village group excursion with lunch on board

Head upstream to Pondok Tanggui (Post 2) where you can go to the feeding station to see the orang-utan that gather here from the depths of the jungle or alternatively you can take a trek through the forests with one of the resident rangers. If you are lucky you may see orang-utan swinging through the trees heading to or from the feeding site. Of course the jungle is filled with other creatures and you only have to be patient to see the wildlife all around you. Back on the boat you will take a freshly prepared lunch on route back downstream to the rainforest station of Pesalat. This is a Government and NGO sponsored site that is attempting to reseed a part of the national park largely destroyed by illegal logging and forest fires. It is quite amazing to see the work involved in trying to recreate rainforest that has taken thousands of years to develop. Your guide will help you chat to the local villagers working here and you may come across volunteers from other countries that are here to help. Slightly further downstream is Tanjung Harapan (Post 1) where you can travel in to the jungle to see the feeding at 3pm. This is the smallest of the posts and sees very few visitors. It is a real favourite for Audley, the local family that lives here are as friendly as they come and the kids will be keen to give you a game of ping pong on the weathered table in the middle of the jungle! You can enjoy a trek around the area after the feeding or cross over the river to the Tanjung Harapan village. This is the largest settlement in the area and you can walk through the tiny village seeing the playful kids, small fish farms and local school. The school will be delighted if you want to visit and welcomes any kind of gift, from pens and pencils to a football for the school field (there are approximately 50-60 children). Rimba Lodge is just over the river from the village and you will come back for dinner.

Semarang introduction

Semarang is the capital city of Central Java Province, and is in strong contrast to the nearby cities of Yogya and Solo. The city is an important commercial centre and has the only port open to large ships on the central coast. Due to its commercial heritage the city is not well visited by tourists and is usually used as a base for further exploration of the area. Nevertheless the city does have a few points of interest including the old city and the famous Chinese Gedung Batu Temple.

Semarang to Yogyakartagroup tour transfer

Your transfer from Semarang to Yogyakarta will take approximately three and a half hours. Traffic will be quite heavy as you escape downtown Semarang and head through the quieter, more leafy, up-town suburbs towards the city of Magelang. If the weather is good and you have a clear afternoon you will see towering Mount Merapi to your left with Sumbing and neighbouring Sundoro to your right as you approach the city of Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta introduction

The city, which is usually referred to as ‘Jogja’, is the most popular destination for those travelling in Java and is a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area including the ancient relics of Borobudur and Prambanan. Jogja is known as the cultural capital of Java and as such has a multitude of worthwhile places to visit, most of which are conveniently found in the walled Kraton in the old town.

Morning city tour of the old towngroup excursion

The tour gives you an opportunity to see some of the cultural sights that Jogja's old town is famous for. You will spend most of your time at the kraton (the Palace of the Sultans), still the hub of traditional life and the centre of the old town. The kraton was built by Prince Mangkubumi in 1755 who the following year changed his

name to Sultan Hamengkubuwono (the Universe on the Lap of the King). The walled city of the kraton is home to around 25,000 people with over 1,000 of these serving the Sultan. In the centre of the kraton you will find the Bangsal Kencana (Golden Pavilion) which is an excellent example of the grand elegance that typified Javanese architecture during this period. Near to the kraton you will find the Taman Sari complex, also know as the water castle (or the old Dutch name of waterkasteel). This once served as a pleasure park of pools for the sultan and his cohorts and was completed in 1765. Although most the site lies damaged from war and earthquake, the bathing pools have been restored. Next door to the Taman Sari is the bird market which you may find somewhat chilling due to the many hundreds of birds on sale as pets. There is also a smaller section where you will see snakes and other reptiles. Ask your guide to take you up Pasar Ngasem where from the walls of the Taman Sari you can enjoy a good view out over Jogja. For history buffs, it is worth visiting the Sono Budoyo museum in front of the kraton where you can admire the extensive collection of antiques and historical artefacts. As well as the collection inside, the building itself (designed by Van Kartsen) is another interesting example of Javanese architecture. The area is also known for its batik, a unique art using beeswax, paraffin and a multitude of dyes to create the colourful cloth. From the kraton you will walk up Jalan Malioboro where you can see the souvenir shops selling all manner of gifts from Ramayana masks and puppets to 'I Love Jogja' t-shirts! It should take around 20 minutes to reach Jogja's main market of Pasar Beringharjo. Here you have the chance to explore the two floor building which is piled high with batik and other clothing as well as huge stalls selling local fruits, vegetables and spices. You will finish the morning with lunch in a local cafe.

Afternoon at leisurerecommendations for your free time - not included

You have the rest of the day free to enjoy at your leisure. Although the roads will always be busy with cars and mopeds, Jogja is a relatively easy place to navigate on foot (or with a little help from a becak) once you get to the central area around Jalan Malioboro or the Kraton. You may wish to revisit Jalan Malioboro (Malioboro Street) which is the major shopping street in Yogyakarta, Indonesia; the name is also used more generally for the neighbourhood around the street. There are many vendors selling their merchandises, ranging from such local handicrafts as batik, rattan ornament, leather puppet, bamboo handicrafts (key holders, ornament lamps and others) as well as blangkon (Javanese / Jogjanese traditional cap) and silver goods to general little things that you may find in other trading places. If you really want to shop then another visit to Pasar Beringharjo could also be worthwhile. This market provides traditional products in addition to similar goods sold along the arcade of Malioboro Street. In addition to local products of Jogja, products from neighbouring areas such as Pekalongan batik and Solo batik are available. There are many choices of hand made batik, printed batik, curtains with unique motifs and batik bed sheets. This place generally offers more unique goods than Malioboro. To escape the hustle and bustle of Jalan Malioboro area we suggest a casual walk amongst the small but interesting shops along Jalan Tirtadipuran, all with their own unique charm, you can uncover some old and new batiks, interesting Javanese handicrafts and the odd genuine antique. Just a few minutes from here, you may like

to visit the Tugu train station whilst in the area. Further afield you could take taxi to Tembi which is a Javanese cultural centre home to plenty of cultural artefacts, fine wooden houses and a good restaurant.

Ramayana ballet at Prambanangroup excursion with dinner

The Ramayana story presented in this performance is similar to that engraved on Prambanan temple. The famous Hindu story is summarised in four scenes and the entire story is presented in a series of dance movements done by beautiful dancers accompanied by gamelan music. You are invited to really plunge into the story and observe each movement of the dancers to know the coarse of the story. There is no dialog among the dancers and it is only the storyteller who describes the coarse of the story through Javanese songs (there will be a handout given so you can try to follow). There are two places in Jogja where the Ramayana ballet is performed. First, in Purawisata Yogyakarta where it has been performed for 25 years The other place to see the ballet is the open stage (and closed-stage in bad weather) in the Prambanan temple complex. We will try to ensure you see the performance at Prambanan, however the dates can (and do) change at late notice and it is also weather dependent. Dinner is included before the show at 6.30pm. The show will start at 7.30pm and lasts around two hours.

Borobudur, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Borobudur visitgroup excursion

The journey to Borobudur can take around an hour depending on the traffic. Once you arrive at Borobudur find yourself a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the serene and spiritual atmosphere that seems to have infiltrated every rock. As you look out to the hills and forests surrounding you it isn't hard to imagine how explorers must have felt when they stumbled out of the forest in 1814 to find such a sight lost to the world for almost 500 years. The awe-inspiring monument features the largest and most complete collection of Buddhist relief sculptures on the walls of its seven terraces - all of which detail the story of Buddhist cosmology. It was thought to take 75 years to complete and although it's exact purpose is still unclear it was evidently a shrine to Lord Buddha and guide to the noble path of the Buddha. It is thought that Borobudur was abandoned following the 14th century decline of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java, and the Javanese conversion to Islam. It was then completely covered in a deep layer of volcanic ash following the eruption of nearby Mount Merapi and worldwide knowledge of its existence was only sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the then British ruler of Java. Three kilometres to the east of Borobudur is Candi Mendut. This Buddhist temple was built in 824AD by King Indera of the Cailendra dynasty. There are some wonderful scriptures on the walls and the architecture is fascinating - well worth a visit before you leave the area. On your return from Borobudur you will stop to see a local village at work. Perched in a valley beside a river, the village of Candijero has a great setting and you will explore on the back of a horse and cart. It has numerous cottage industries you can see as well as the opportunity to meet some of the locals. You may see people tending the fields, making noodles or tofu for market and constructing small hand crafted souvenirs. The village works with a local tourism initiative and this is a good way to provide a small amount of extra income for the local population. The smiles and waves you receive from everyone you pass are a

OUR ACCOMMODATION GRADING SYSTEM

Your accommodation is described on the following pages. Please do not hesitate to call us if you require any further information about any of the properties. We classify accommodation into the following categories. These are for your guidance only, they are based on the opinions of our staff and are therefore quite subjective.

Basic: Very primitive accommodation where we are not aware of anything better in the region. Simple: Clean and simple but limited facilities. Medium: A good standard of accommodation, reasonable range of facilities. First Class: A high standard of accommodation with a wide range of facilities. Deluxe: Superb accommodation with facilities and service to match. Opulent: The world’s most unashamedly luxurious hotels, resorts and lodges.

Our opinion: The property is built in traditional Balinese style. Natural stone paths leading around the property have been worn away over time and are open to the elements so they can be slippery and uneven. They are also steep in places due to the hotels location on a hillside.

TJAMPUHAN HOTEL, UBUD Medium Located just west of central Ubud in lush tropical gardens with wonderful views of the Wos River. 63 pleasant cottages overlook the picturesque valley, only a short stroll from the Ubud Monkey Forest, the Puri Lukisan Museum of Balinese art, the former King's Palace and traditional market. As one of the first properties to be built in Ubud, the hotel does not possess many of the modern features that newer properties feature such as in room televisions and designer decor. Instead, the Raja rooms that we suggest will have wonderful views of the Ubud countryside and a private terrace to enjoy these at your own time. A small unique spa built into the caves in the cliff side can be found down towards the river and the simple hotel restaurant boasts wonderful valley views as dusk approaches.

THE MENJANGAN, BALI BARAT First Class The Menjangan is spread over four locations within 382 hectares of Bali Barat and is ideal for those looking for luxury in an idyllic, natural setting. Each of the three accommodation options offer a different experience. The Monsoon Lodge, home to 12 Monsoon deluxe rooms and two Monsoon suites, is located in the heart of the forest and is an ideal base for trekking, horse-riding, bird watching or simply spotting the numerous deer or monkey that inhabit the national park. Both room types have the small pool on their doorsteps and are a comfortable base for your stay, the major difference is that deluxe are 50m2 and suites are 100m2. Alternatively, beach lovers may prefer the beach villas. All seven villas include

open air bathrooms and direct access to the white, sandy beach, mangroves and coral reefs. The villas are some 2km from the main resort and you can walk through the forest or call for a buggy. For larger parties of families or friends the exclusive self contained three bedroom Menjangan Residence can comfortably fit six people, but has additional room for three extra beds. It comes complete with butler service, a private swimming pool and offers spectacular views over Menjangan Island and the coral reef below from its cliff top setting. The resort also has one central area called the Bali Tower which is built in traditional style over four floors. The ground floor offers a dedicated check in and breakfast area while on the first floor is the resort's main restaurant offering Italian and Indonesian cuisine. The top floors have relaxing day beds

and breathtaking views over the national park.

IJEN RESORT & VILLAS, IJEN PLATEAU Medium Ijen Resort and Villas is perched on the edge of Ijen National Park and overlooks terraced rice fields and volcanoes. This small resort is conveniently located for visiting the nearby volcano of Kawah Ijen. The resort has a mountain spring water swimming pool, restaurant and offers trekking to Ijen Crater or sightseeing tours to nearby villages. Our opinion: A great location with breathtaking views over the Ijen Plateau. The Ijen Resort offers a convenient base for exploring the unspoilt beauty of East Java. Simple rooms are ensuite, and comfortable for short stays. Road conditions in this region are poor and so journeys can be a little bumpy.

MAJAPAHIT HOTEL, SURABAYA First Class Hotel Majapahit is a classic landmark hotel full of history and a source of national pride. Its graceful architecture, landscaped gardens, pool, spa, gym and tennis court complete the Majapahit's colonial style with modern comforts that make for a pleasant rest on a busy itinerary. The 23 Garden Terrace rooms feature a spacious bathroom adorned with opulent gold and marble, a luxurious bedroom plus direct access to a terrace overlooking the magnificent garden courtyards. The 89 Executive suites are larger and more luxurious. Built in 1910, the hotel was originally named the Oranje Hotel (after the Dutch Royal family) by Lucas Martin Sarkies of the famous Armenian family whose collection of grand hotels includes Raffles in Singapore, The Strand in Rangoon and Eastern and

Oriental in George Town, Penang. Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard, attended the opening of a new art-deco style addition to the front of the hotel in 1936. By 1942 Surabaya was occupied by Japanese forces and the hotel was renamed 'Yamato Hoteru' or 'Hotel Yamato'. The most significant part of the hotel's history took place at the end of World War II. On September 19th, 1945 at 6am, the Dutch leaders in Surabaya raised the Dutch red-white-blue flag on the main flag pole of the hotel. It was a symbol to show Dutch colonial control after the allies victory in World War II. Indonesians considered the raising of the Dutch flag on top of the hotel as an insult to Indonesia's proclamation of independence, which was made in Jakarta on August 17th. By 6.30am, a crowd of angry Indonesians who had gathered in front promptly raised a cry of 'Merdeka' (freedom), lowered the offending flag, and tore off the bottom of blue strip, thus turning it into the

Indonesian flag. Confusion and tragedy ensued. A British commander was murdered in October and a full scale invasion was launched the following month, beginning on November 10th 1945. This day is celebrated nationally as Heroes Day and Surabaya is called 'The City of Heroes' with an appropriate monument to mark the famous battle. For the next few months, while the revolution carried on in Surabaya, the hotel was known as Hotel Merdeka or the Liberty Hotel. By 1946 the hotel was again managed by the Sarkies family and underwent yet another name change, to Hotel L.M.S (after its founder Lucas Martin Sarkies). It continued as such until 1969 when a new group of owners decided to call it the Majapahit, after one of ancient Indonesia's most enduring kingdoms. This name, its fifth in nearly 60 years, has been retained up until today.

PHOENIX HOTEL, YOGYAKARTA First Class This colonial style hotel offers the facilities and comfort of a modern hotel while maintaining the traditions of the past. Many of the Deluxe rooms and the Executive suites offer private balconies overlooking the courtyard pool and are furnished in a modern style with local touches. The remainder of the 144 rooms are clean and functional. The Paprika restaurant specialises in Asian fusion cooking while the 1918 terrace bar overlooks an open-air courtyard and the trendy Vino wine bar features nightly entertainment. The pool and restaurant are located in elegant shady courtyards and the whole hotel is so peaceful that it is difficult to believe you are in the middle of such a vibrant city. The small spa is ideal to come back to after a sunrise visit to Borobudur.

day - but most people are out exploring at this time. Our opinion: This is one of the best accommodation options for viewing local wildlife, as it is just a few minutes by boat from the orang-utan feeding station at Pondok Tangui and mid way upstream to Camp Leakey.

RIMBA LODGE, TANJUNGPUTING Simple Rimba Lodge is set right on the edge of the gently flowing Sekonyer River beside Tanjung Puting National Park. The timber lodge is built in a series of adjoining elevated pavilions with each pavilion containing three rooms and its own covered verandah and boardwalk to the river’s edge. The 32 rooms all have fans and mosquito drapes as well as western toilets and showers. The Diamond, Emerald and Amethyst rooms we recommend have air conditioning, fans and temperamental hot water; Sapphire rooms have (temperamental) hot water and fan; Ruby rooms have cold water and fan. There is a restaurant here with limited western food and numerous local dishes served by friendly staff. Electricity is powered by a generator which only runs from 5pm to 8am so the rooms can get very hot during the

Charity support

Charity support 39

Audley has been supporting carbon reduction projects through Friends of Conservation since 2005 and in addition to this, each individual department also supports a charity or charities of their choice with a yearly financial donation. These charities are close to their hearts and the team often chooses to fundraise to add to this amount. The Southeast Asia team has chosen to support STREETS International, who work in Vietnam. Please ask your specialist if you would like to find out more as in most instances they will have visited the charity themselves, or one of their colleagues will have. About STREETS International STREETS International is an innovative social enterprise initiative with the purpose to develop and operate sustainable programs for street kids and disadvantaged youth in Southeast Asia and throughout the world. STREETS prepares vulnerable, orphaned and other disadvantaged young people for careers in hospitality. In developing economies around the world, tourism is often one of the first and largest sectors to experience growth and expansion. The STREETS initiative is designed to match the resource demands of the growing hospitality sectors with the needs of disadvantaged youth. It provides them with the highest levels of training to prepare them for careers in culinary arts and hospitality service. The 18-month programme incorporates many components, including classroom instruction, hands-on work experience, housing and all the necessary social and community support. This is the first real chance for many disadvantaged young adults to escape from a life of poverty and on the streets, gaining self-sufficiency through a successful career in hospitality.

Audley and STREETS International in the Future The first STREETS Restaurant Café and Training Center opened in Hoi An, Vietnam, in 2009. Since opening, it has touched the lives of close to 100 young adults. Of the first two graduating classes, 100% were employed within months of graduation at the top resorts and restaurant in Central Vietnam. STREETS plans on opening its next programme in SAPA Vietnam. They will work with children of disadvantaged ethnic minority groups living in the area. For those who would like to see the project in action we can arrange for you to visit the STREETS Restaurant Café in the historic central district of Hoi An. Donations are gratefully accepted by the charity. The Southeast Asia team at Audley will be fundraising over the year in order to add to our annual contribution to STREETS International in Vietnam. If you would like to find out more about STREETS please ask your specialist or visit www.streetsinternational.org

Travel insurance It is advisable to take out your travel insurance at the time of booking your trip as cover will commence for pre-departure cancellation from the policy issue date. This will, therefore, provide cover should you have to cancel your trip for an insured reason such as illness or serious accident.

We strongly recommend that you and all members of your party are adequately insured, providing financial protection against unforeseen circumstances. Cover should include medical expenses and repatriation in the event of accident or illness. In addition, we strongly recommend that you have cover for personal belongings, delay at your outward or homeward point of departure, personal liability, overseas legal expenses and cancellation. If you are undertaking any sports or adventurous activities, including trekking, on your trip you should also make sure that your policy covers these. Please also ensure you read the policy conditions and exclusions.

The type of trips we create and the requirements of Audley clients vary greatly. We have therefore listed below a number of companies who offer policies which may suit these varying requirements. You can find links to the companies' websites, at www.audleytravel.com/insurance. Other companies and policies are also available. We are unable to provide you with more detailed information and you should contact the company concerned directly for this. Please note this is general information only. We are not providing any specific advice on travel insurance or recommending any particular policy or insurer.

Trips of up to £5,000 pp A large number of companies offer insurance policies which include cover for cancellation charges of up to the full holiday cost. American Express (0800 232 277), Insure and Go (0844 888 2787) and the Post Office (0800 294 2292) all have policies that you may like to consider. This information can also be found at www.audleytravel.com/insurance with links to the insurers’ websites.

Trips over £5,000 pp It can be more challenging to get insurance which includes cover for cancellation charges of up to the full holiday cost for higher value trips. A number of companies do, however, offer such policies.

Thomson (in partnership with AXA) (0845 366 2212) offer cancellation cover up to £20,000 per person, American Express (0800 232 277) offer cancellation cover up to £12,500 per person and Insure and Go (0844 888 2787) offer cancellation cover up to £7,500 per person. Clients over 65 years of age Many companies now offer cover to people over 65 years of age. However, if you are finding it difficult to get cover you could try Age UK (0845 600 3348) or Saga (0800 015 0757) both of whom currently have no upper age limit on their policies. See also the companies referred to under pre-existing medical conditions below. This information can also be found on our website www.audleytravel.com/insurance with links to the insurers’ websites.

Pre-existing medical conditions If you have a pre-existing medical condition, there are a number of companies that may be able to help you. P J Hayman / Free Spirit (0845 230 5000) will consider most pre-existing medical conditions and they have no upper age limit on single trip policies. Age UK (0845 600 3348) and Insure and Go (0844 888 2787) will also consider a number of pre-existing conditions and may be able to help. Cancer Travel Insurance Services (0845 880 0163) specialise in travel insurance for people with non-terminal cancer and have no upper age limit on their policies. This information can also be found at www.audleytravel.com/insurance with links to the insurers’ websites.

Non-UK residents If you are not a UK resident you will usually need to get insurance in your country of residence. Some insurance companies, such as Columbus Direct (0845 888 8893), will consider policies for non-UK residents. This information can also be found on our website www.audleytravel.com/insurance with links to the insurers’ websites.

Once you have a travel insurance policy in place, please let your specialist know who your insurance company is and your policy number.

The above information is provided in good faith and is correct to the best of our knowledge. No liability is, however, accepted for any errors and all information must be checked directly with the insurance company.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) The majority of international airlines now issue advice on how to lessen the risk of DVT, however, if you have any concerns, we recommend that you consult your doctor.

Pre-existing medical conditions/Disabled passengers It is essential that you advise us before booking if you have any disability or pre-existing medical condition which may affect your holiday, or any special requirements as a result of any disability or medical condition (including any which affect the booking process) so that we can assist you in considering the suitability of the arrangements and/or making the booking. It will also enable us to make sure you receive the relevant level of assistance when you fly. Full details must be confirmed in writing at the time of booking and whenever any change in the condition or disability occurs. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. The nature of many of the destinations we travel to means that in the majority of cases they are unsuitable for those who are wheelchair-bound or have a lack of mobility. We will be delighted to discuss the feasibility of creating a tailor-made itinerary for you that takes into consideration your level of mobility. On our escorted group tours the Tour Leader is, unfortunately, unable to offer additional assistance to passengers with limited mobility and all such assistance will need to be provided by whoever the passenger is travelling with. We may request that you provide a letter from your doctor confirming your fitness to travel.

High altitude Your itinerary may include sections where the altitude exceeds 10,000 feet (3,048 metres). If you suffer from circulation, heart or respiratory problems we advise that you consult with your doctor before confirming your booking.

SmokingAirlines do not permit smoking on the aircraft. At the request of the majority of our clients we do not allow smoking on any form of transport used for our escorted group tours. Stops are regularly made where you will be able to smoke. For smokers travelling on a tailor-made tour we request that you check with your driver or guide whether smoking is permitted in the vehicle. Health and safety standards Each country has its own regulations and enforcement levels relating to health and safety standards. These do not always match the very high standards we are used to in the UK. We therefore recommend that you follow a few precautionary safety procedures. Always check where the nearest fire exit is and how to raise the fire alarm. Do not enter a swimming pool before checking the water depth first. For more suggestions please see the Important Information section in your Travel Organiser. Passport and visa information for British Citizens Passengers must hold a passport which is valid for at least six months following the return date of your holiday. British passport holders (full British Citizens) currently require visas, in advance of travel, for the following destinations featured in our brochures and on our website: Australia, Bhutan, Burma, China, Cuba, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea (also available on arrival), Russia, Tanzania, Tibet, Uganda, the USA*, Uzbekistan and Vietnam**. Visas may be required for other countries but can be arranged on arrival. * British Citizens travelling to the USA require an ESTA – please speak to your specialist for more information ** Visitors to Vietnam can obtain a visa on arrival but require a letter of authorisation from ourselves – please speak to your specialist We are normally able to obtain visas on your behalf, please ask for details at the time of booking. Non-British passport holders should check with the relevant embassies as visa requirements may be different to those of British passport holders. It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct documentation and visa stamp(s). Failure or inability to obtain all required visas for whatever reason does not entitle you to cancel without paying the applicable cancellation charges.

Travel advice The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice Unit monitors all overseas destinations and offers safety advice to British travellers. To view the advice you can visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice. Flights and airlines The difference between a direct flight and a non-stop flight can cause confusion. To clarify, on a direct flight no change of aircraft is scheduled but touchdowns will be made en route either to refuel or to board or disembark passengers. On non-stop flights no change of aircraft is required and no stops are made en route. Exact details of your route will be given in your itinerary.

Premium Economy, Business and First Class If you require business or first class flights these can be arranged on most airlines at very competitive rates. Premium economy can be arranged on certain airlines, please call us for details.

Specific seat requests We will do all we can to try to reserve a specific seat for you, if you have a preference. However, whilst airlines may allow us to request seats, they will not guarantee any specific seat reservation. If this is important to you, it is always best to arrive for your flight early, regardless of having made this request in advance. Please make it clear on your booking form if you have a specific request.

Flight amendments We generally use special ‘inclusive tour’ fares when we purchase your air tickets from the airlines. While these fares are very good value they are inflexible in terms of changes and offer no refunds once the tickets are issued. Once your flight is confirmed the airlines will charge an amendment fee or insist on the purchase of a completely new ticket if you make changes.

Internal flights Smaller local airlines are often more likely to change their schedule at short notice. We will endeavour to inform you of any changes in advance of travelling but this may not always be possible.

Frequent Flyer Clubs If you collect points through any of the airline frequent flyer clubs please provide your membership details on the booking form and we will ensure that these are recorded against your flight reservation. Please note that on some of our specially negotiated ‘inclusive tour’ fares points are not always awarded. Carbon offsetting Please let your specialist know if you would like to carbon offset your flights. We work with Friends of Conservation (FOC) and all offsetting payments are donated through them. For more details visit www.audleytravel.com/offset. The suggested amounts are in line with DEFRA’s current guidelines for the cost per tonne of carbon. If you wish to ensure that Gift Aid is included please donate directly via the FOC website. UK airport hotels, car parking and lounges We are able to arrange airport hotel accommodation, car parking, meet and greet services and airport lounge access in the UK, subject to availability. To arrange any of these services please call us on 01993 838 051. Hotel information There is often confusion over the terminology used for bed arrangements in hotel rooms. A ‘double’ is recognised as meaning a room with a double bed, this may be two single beds pushed together. A ‘twin’ is a room with two single beds. Please note that all rooms are allocated at the discretion of the hotel and cannot be guaranteed.

Single rooms Single rooms tend to be smaller than double or twin rooms, however, many hotels do not have single rooms, in which case you will be allocated a twin or double room. Special dietary requirements Special diets should be requested on the booking form; however, it is unrealistic to expect special diets to be catered for in some of the destinations we feature. We will advise the hotels and airlines of your request but we cannot guarantee their availability. If you have an airborne nut allergy you must make us aware at the time of booking as most airlines require this information in advance of travel.

Accuracy of informationWe thoroughly check all the information that is included within our brochures, website and individual tour itineraries, however, changes do occur and errors are occasionally made. Airlines may change their schedules, roads may close and government regulations may alter. Should there be any changes to the travel arrangements you have booked we will do our best to keep you informed of the situation prior to departure. Travel in the developing world Many of our destinations are in the developing world where attitudes, infrastructure, priorities, lifestyles and cultures are very different from our own. This is often the very reason to visit the destination but certain aspects may be frustrating. We always advise that the first thing you should pack is your sense of humour. This can prove invaluable when travelling over rougher roads, waiting for a delayed aircraft and communicating with hotel staff whose first language is not English. Data Protection Act We will hold your name, address and any other details you supply us with on our database. This information will be used to make your travel arrangements and to send you information about Audley Travel. In order to make your travel arrangements we will need to pass your details to companies and individuals outside the EU where less stringent data protection controls may be in place. We will not pass on your details to third parties for any other purposes. AITO Quality Charter: The Association of Independent Tour Operators AITO is the association for independent and specialist holiday companies. Our member companies, usually owner-managed, strive to create overseas holidays with high levels of professionalism and a shared concern for quality and personal service. The Association encourages the highest standards in all aspects of tour operating.

Exclusive membership AITO sets criteria regarding ownership, finance and quality which must be satisfied before new companies are admitted to membership. All members are required to adhere to a Code of Business Practice which encourages high operational standards and conduct.

Financial security An AITO member is required to arrange financial protection for all holidays and other arrangements (including accommodation only) booked by customers with the member under the AITO logo. This financial protection applies to customers who are resident in the UK at the time of booking and to most overseas customers who have booked directly with the member. In doing so, the member must comply with UK government regulations. Members are required to submit details of their financial protection arrangements to AITO on a regular basis.

Accurate brochures and web sites All members do their utmost to ensure that all their brochures and other publications, print or electronic, clearly and accurately describe the holidays and services offered.

Professional service and continual improvements All members are committed to high standards of service and believe in regular and thorough training of employees. Members continually seek to review and improve their holidays. They listen to their customers and always welcome suggestions for improving standards.

Monitoring standards AITO endeavours to monitor quality standards regularly. All customers should receive a post-holiday questionnaire, the results of which are scrutinised by the Association.

Sustainable tourism All members acknowledge the importance of AITO’s Sustainable Tourism guidelines, which recognise the social, economic and environmental responsibilities of tour operating. Those demonstrating their achievements beyond the pure acceptance of this principle are recognised by the award of two to five star status. Audley has achieved five star status.

Customer relations All members endeavour to deal swiftly and fairly with any issues their customers may raise. In the unlikely event that a dispute between an AITO member and a customer cannot be settled amicably, AITO’s low-cost Independent Dispute Settlement Service may be called upon by either side to bring the matter to a speedy and acceptable conclusion. Audley is a member of the Association of Independent Tour Operators. To contact the Association, visit www.aito.co.uk or call 020 8744 9280.

Terms and conditions

Terms and conditions 43

Please read the following conditions carefully. All holidays are sold by us subject to these conditions and the other general information in this booklet, our brochures and quotations. Audley Travel Group Ltd (whose administrative offices are at New Mill, New Mill Lane, Witney, Oxon OX29 9SX) are members of the Association of Independent Tour Operators. Audley Travel Group Ltd (hereafter referred to as ‘we’, ‘us’, ‘our’) offers a number of products and the trading names we use are ‘Audley’, and ‘Audley Travel’. In these Terms & Conditions, ‘you’ and ‘your’ means all persons named on the booking, or any of them as applicable (including anyone who is added or substituted at a later date). Your contract with us and all matters arising out of it are governed by English law. We both agree that any dispute, claim or other matter which arises out of or in connection with this contract or your holiday, will be dealt with by the AITO Arbitration Scheme - see clause 9 or the Courts of England and Wales only unless, in the case of Court proceedings, you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland. In this case, proceedings may be brought in the Courts of your home country. If proceedings are brought in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may choose to have your contract governed by the law of Scotland/Northern Ireland as applicable. If you do not so choose, English law will apply. 1. Paying for your holiday (i) The procedure for making a booking is shown in your itinerary quotation and on our website. All bookings are subject to these terms and conditions and by asking us to confirm your booking, the person who makes the booking is taken to have accepted these booking conditions on behalf of all persons named on the booking. Once we have received the applicable payment(s) due at the time of booking (see below), we will, subject to availability of the requested arrangements, send you your invoice. It is at the point when we issue this to you that a valid contract will come into existence between us. Please check your confirmation/invoice and all tickets/documents carefully as soon as you receive them and contact us immediately if you think any details are incorrect. We regret we cannot accept any liability if we are not notified of any inaccuracies (for which we are responsible) in any document within ten days of our sending it out (five days for tickets). We will do our best to rectify any mistake notified to us outside these time limits but you must meet any costs involved in doing so. (ii) The deposit is part payment of the holiday. The deposit required will be shown on the quotation page of your itinerary. In addition to the deposit, full or part payment of certain elements of your holiday (such as flights) may be required at the time booking or at some point between booking and balance due date. Also see clause I (iv). The deposit and all such additional payments are non refundable except as set out in clause 4. The balance must be paid not later than the date specified on the invoice. This is normally no less than 8 weeks before the departure date. However, there are a few destinations or trip components that require payment no less than 90 days before the departure date which will be specified on your invoice and quotation. Please note if we do not receive all payments due (including any surcharge where applicable) in full and on time, we are entitled to assume that you wish to cancel your booking. In this case, we will be entitled to keep all amounts paid or due at that date. If we do not cancel straight away because you have promised to make payment, you must pay the cancellation charges shown in clause 3 depending on the date we reasonably treat your booking as cancelled. (iii) Full payment is required at the time of booking for all bookings made after balance due date as above. (iv) On occasions, we may be asked by suppliers to make payment to them earlier than normal. Such requests may, for example, be made in order to secure accommodation and other services during periods of peak demand. Whilst suppliers may have no contractual right to make such requests, failure to comply with them may result in the loss of confirmed arrangements. Where this situation arises, we reserve the right to ask you to make payment of the requested sum within a stipulated period and prior to balance due date. We will of course endeavour to avoid doing so if we can. Any such early payment will be non refundable except as set out in clause 4. (v) If you are booking your holiday through one of our authorised travel agents the balance must be paid to the agent two weeks prior to the applicable balance due date as specified on the invoice and quotation. All payments made to one of our authorised travel agents for the arrangements

we have contracted to provide will be held by them on our behalf. If you book your holiday through a travel agent who is not a member of ABTA, all payments must be made to us directly and not your travel agent. 2. If you change your holiday If, after the contract between us has come into existence, you want to change your holiday we will do our best to pass your request to the relevant supplier, however we cannot guarantee that such changes can be made. Where a change can be made, we will charge for any additional costs incurred including any costs imposed or incurred by any of our suppliers, and including for example cancellation charges that may be incurred for sectors cancelled. You should note, for example, that a change of name on or other alteration to an airline ticket will usually incur a 100% cancellation charge and full rebooking fee. 3. If you cancel your holiday If you have to cancel part of the booking or cancel the entire booking once it has been confirmed by us, written notification must be sent to us by recorded delivery post or by email. As proof of receipt by email of your notification to cancel you must receive and retain written acknowledgement from Audley Travel. Charges will be applied from the date the letter is received, or the email is acknowledged by Audley Travel, according to the scale below. The charges are applied as a percentage of the total holiday cost excluding any amendment charges and any amounts paid in addition to the deposit at the time of booking or before balance due date (see clauses 1(ii) and I(iv)) which are non refundable in the event of cancellation. The following cancellation charges apply if your final balance due date is 8 weeks prior to departure. Please note, different cancellation charges apply in relation to certain products – please see your quote for details. Period before departure Cancellation date within which written Charge notification is received at Per Person our offices Up to balance due date Deposit only Balance due date-43 days 30% 42-29 days 60% 28-3 days 90% Within 2 days 100% Alterations or cancellations by you after commencement of travel and unused services We will do our best to implement any changes to your arrangements you request once they have commenced, but we cannot guarantee this will be possible. In the event of such amendments being made you will be liable for any cancellation charges that may be levied for the services originally booked, and for the cost of booking the revised arrangements and the arrangements themselves. As a basic principle, no refunds will be paid to clients who do not complete a tour. However where we ourselves are able to obtain a refund from hotels or principals for services not used, we will pass this on to you, less any reasonable administration charges. THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAVEL INSURANCE If you have taken out holiday insurance you may, depending on the detail of your policy, be able to recover the cancellation charges, check your policy for details. Never travel without insurance, the unexpected can always happen. It is your responsibility to ensure you are adequately covered by insurance. Please read your policy and take it on holiday with you. 4. If we change your holiday We start planning the holidays we offer many months in advance. Occasionally, we have to make changes to and correct errors in itineraries and other details both before and after bookings have been confirmed and cancel confirmed bookings. Whilst we always endeavour to avoid changes and cancellations, we must reserve the right to do so. However, we promise we will only cancel your confirmed booking after balance due date where you have failed to comply with any requirement of these booking conditions entitling us to cancel (such as paying on time) or where we are forced to do so as a result of ‘force majeure’ as defined in clause 5 below. We will not cancel after this date for any other reason. Most changes are minor. Occasionally, we have to make a ‘significant change’. A significant change is a change made before departure which, taking account of the information you give us at the time of booking and which we can reasonably be expected to know as a tour operator, we

can reasonably expect to have a major effect on your holiday. Significant changes are likely to include the following changes when made before departure; a change of accommodation to that of a lower official classification or standard for the whole or a major part of the time you are away*, a change of accommodation area for the whole or a major part of the time you are away, a change of UK outward departure time or overall length of time you are away of twelve or more hours, or a change of UK departure airport to one which is more inconvenient for you (except as between Gatwick and Heathrow). *Please note: A change affecting a stay in a hotel during a tour where the hotel itself is not the focus of the tour, does not constitute a significant change. If we have to make a significant change or cancel, we will tell you as soon as possible. If there is time to do so before departure, we will offer you the choice of the following options:- (a) (for significant changes) accepting the changed arrangements or (b) purchasing an alternative holiday from us, of a similar standard to that originally booked if available. Please note: Due to the original and individual nature of our holidays it frequently may not be possible to offer you a comparable holiday to that originally booked. (c) cancelling or accepting the cancellation in which case you will receive a full and quick refund of all monies you have paid to us. You must advise us of your decision within 7 days of the date on which we notified you of the significant change or cancellation. Please note, the above options are not available where any change made is a minor one. A minor change is any change which, taking account of the information you have given us at the time of booking or which we can reasonably be expected to know as a tour operator, we could not reasonably expect to have a significant effect on your confirmed holiday. If we have to make a significant change or cancellation we will pay you the compensation set out below subject to the following exceptions. Compensation will not be payable and no liability beyond offering the above mentioned choices can be accepted where (1) we are forced to make a change or cancel as a result of unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which we could not have avoided even with all due care or (2) we have to cancel because the minimum number of bookings necessary for us to operate your holiday has not been reached - in this case we will notify you no less than 60 days before departure. Please note: all escorted group trips are based on group arrangements involving a given minimum number of passengers. No compensation will be payable and the above options will not be available if we cancel as a result of your failure to comply with any requirement of these booking conditions entitling us to cancel (such as paying on time). Period of notification of Compensation change before scheduled per person departure date More than 60 days Nil 60-43 days £10 42-29 days £20 28-15 days £30 14-0 days £40 In the unlikely event that we become unable to provide a significant proportion of the services you have booked after you depart, we will make alternative arrangements for you at no extra charge, or, if this is impossible, or you do not accept these alternative arrangements for a good reason, we will provide you with transport back to the point where your holiday arrangements with us commenced. If we are forced by ‘force majeure’ (see clause 5) to change or terminate your holiday after departure but before the scheduled end of your time away, we regret we will be unable to make any refunds (unless we obtain any refunds from our suppliers), pay you any compensation or meet any costs or expenses you incur as a result except as set out above. 5. Force majeure Except as set out in these terms and conditions, we cannot accept liability or pay any compensation where the performance or prompt performance of our contractual obligations is prevented or affected, or you otherwise

44 Terms and conditions

suffer any loss or damage (as more fully described in clause 7 (i) below) as a result of circumstances amounting to ‘force majeure’. In these terms and conditions ‘force majeure’ means any event or circumstances which we or the supplier of the services in question could not foresee or avoid even with all due care. Such events and circumstances may include, whether actual or threatened, war, insurrection, riots, strikes, civil action, decisions by governments or governing authority, technical or maintenance problems with transport, changes of schedules or operational decisions of air carriers, terrorist activity, industrial action, natural or nuclear activity, epidemics/pandemics, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events outside our control. 6. Surcharges Once the price of your chosen holiday has been confirmed at the time of booking, we will only increase or decrease it in the following circumstances. Price increases or decreases after booking will be passed on by way of a surcharge or refund. A surcharge or refund (as applicable) will be payable, subject to the conditions set out in this clause, if transportation costs (e.g. fuel, scheduled airfares and any other airline surcharges which are part of the contract between airlines (and their agents) and the tour operator) or dues, taxes or fees payable for services such as landing taxes or embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports or airports change. Even in the above cases, only if the amount of the increase in our costs exceeds 2% of the total cost of your holiday (excluding any amendment charges), will we levy a surcharge. If any surcharge is greater than 10% of the cost of your holiday (excluding any amendment charges), you will be entitled to cancel your booking and receive a full refund of all monies you have paid to us (except for any amendment charges) or alternatively purchase another holiday from us as referred to in clause 4 ‘If we change your holiday’. Please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes have no impact on the price of your travel due to contractual and other protection in place. A refund will only be payable if the decrease in our costs exceeds 2% as set out above. Where a refund is due, we will pay you the full amount of the decrease in our costs. You have 14 days from the issue date printed on the surcharge invoice to tell us if you want to cancel or purchase another holiday where applicable. If you do not tell us that you wish to do so within this period of time, we are entitled to assume that you will pay the surcharge. Any surcharge must be paid with the balance of the cost of the holiday or within 14 days of the issue date printed on the surcharge invoice, whichever is the later. We reserve the right to make changes to and correct errors in quoted prices at any time before your holiday is confirmed. We will advise you of any error of which we are aware and of the then applicable price at the time of booking. 7. Our responsibility (i) We promise to make sure that all parts of the holiday we have agreed to arrange, perform or provide as part of our contract with you are arranged, performed or provided with reasonable skill and care. This means that, subject to these booking conditions, we will accept responsibility if, for example, you suffer death or personal injury or your contracted holiday arrangements are not provided as promised or prove deficient as a result of the failure of ourselves, our employees, agents or suppliers to use reasonable skill and care in making, performing or providing, as applicable, your contracted holiday arrangements. Please note, it is your responsibility to show that reasonable skill and care has not been used if you wish to make a claim against us. In addition, we will only be responsible for what our employees, agents and suppliers do or do not do if they were at the time acting within the course of their employment (for employees) or carrying out work we had asked them to do (for agents and suppliers). We will not be responsible for any injury, illness, death, loss (including loss of enjoyment), damage, expense, cost or other sum or claim of any description whatsoever which results from any of the following:- (a) the fault of the person(s) affected or any member(s) of their party or (b) the fault of a third party not connected with the provision of your holiday which we could not have predicted or avoided or

(c) an event or circumstance which we or the supplier of the service(s) in question could not have predicted or avoided even after taking all reasonable care (see clause 5) (d) the fault of anyone who is not carrying out work for us (generally or in particular) at the time. In addition, we will not be responsible where you do not enjoy your holiday or suffer any problems because of a reason you did not tell us about when you booked your holiday or where any problems you suffer did not result from any breach of our contract or other fault of ourselves or, where we were responsible for them, our suppliers or agents or where any losses, expenses, costs or other sum you have suffered relate to any business. Please note: we cannot accept responsibility for any services which do not form part of our contract. This includes, for example, any additional services or facilities which your hotel or any other supplier agrees to provide for you where the services or facilities are not advertised in our brochure and we have not agreed to arrange them as part of our contract and any excursion you purchase during your holiday. (ii) The promises we make to you about the services we have agreed to provide or arrange as part of our contract -and the laws and regulations of the country in which your claim or complaint occurred - will be used as the basis for deciding whether the services in question had been properly provided. If the particular services which gave rise to the claim or complaint complied with local laws and regulations applicable to those services at the time, the services will be treated as having been properly provided. This will be the case even if the services did not comply with the laws and regulations of the UK which would have applied had those services been provided in the UK. The exception to this is where the claim or complaint concerns the absence of a safety feature which might lead a reasonable holiday maker to refuse to take the holiday in question. (iii) We limit the maximum amount we may have to pay you for any and all claims or parts of claims which do not involve personal injury, illness or death. Except where loss of and/or damage to luggage or personal possessions is concerned or a lower limitation of liability applies to your claim, the maximum amount we will have to pay you for such non personal injury claims if we are found liable to you on any basis is twice the price (excluding any amendment charges) paid by or on behalf of the person(s) affected in total. This maximum amount will only be payable where everything has gone wrong and you have not received any benefit at all from your holiday. Where we are found liable for loss of and/or damage to any luggage or personal possessions (including money), the maximum amount we will have to pay you is £150 per person affected as you are assumed to have taken out adequate insurance at the time of booking. Please also see clause 7(iv) below. (iv) Where any claim or part of a claim concerns or is based on any travel arrangements (including the process of getting on and/or off the transport concerned) provided by any air, sea, rail or road carrier or any stay in a hotel, the maximum amount of compensation we will have to pay you will be limited. The most we will have to pay you for that claim or that part of a claim if we are found liable to you on any basis is the most the carrier or hotel keeper concerned would have to pay under the international convention or regulation which applies to the travel arrangements or hotel stay in question (for example, the Warsaw Convention as amended for international travel by air and/or for airlines with an operating licence granted by an EU country, the EU Regulation on Air Carrier Liability for national and international travel by air, the Athens Convention for international travel by sea and COTIF, the Convention on International Travel by Rail). Please note: Where a carrier or hotel would not be obliged to make any payment to you under the applicable International Convention or Regulation in respect of a claim or part of a claim, we similarly are not obliged to make a payment to you for that claim or part of the claim. When making any payment, we are entitled to deduct any money which you have received or are entitled to receive from the transport provider or hotelier for the complaint or claim in question. (v) You must provide ourselves and our insurers with all assistance we may reasonably require. You must also tell us and the supplier concerned about your claim or complaint as set out in clause 9 below.

8. Flights and your responsibility The flight details shown in your itinerary quotation are for guidance only and are subject to change. Final details will be confirmed on your travel documentation, sent approximately 14 days prior to departure. The times shown on all tickets are local times and check in for both outward and return flights is at least 3 hours prior to the departure times on the travel documents. It is possible that flight times may be changed even after tickets have been dispatched - we will contact you as soon as possible if this occurs. In accordance with EU Directive (EC) No 2111/2005 Article 9, we are required to bring to your attention the existence of a “Community list” which contains details of air carriers who are subject to an operating ban within the EU. The Community list is available for inspection at http://europa.eu.int/comm/transport/air/safety/ flywell_en.htm. In accordance with EU Regulations we are required to advise you of the actual carrier(s) (or, if the actual carrier(s) is not known, the likely carrier(s)) that will operate your flight(s) at the time of booking. Where we are only able to inform you of the likely carrier(s) at the time of booking, we shall inform you of the identity of the actual carrier(s) as soon as we become aware of this. Any change to the operating carrier(s) after your booking has been confirmed will be notified to you as soon as possible. If the carrier with whom you have a confirmed reservation becomes subject to an operating ban as above as a result of which we/ the carrier are unable to offer you a suitable alternative the provisions of clause 4 will apply. Any change in the identity of the carrier, flight timings, and/or aircraft type (if advised) will not entitle you to cancel or change to other arrangements without paying our normal charges except where specified in these conditions. We can accept no responsibility if you arrive late for the check in and miss your flight as a result nor can we accept responsibility for any loss by you of your holiday/flight travel tickets, vouchers or coupons. Air travel is subject to operational decisions of carriers and airports which may result in delays and diversions. Please note that minor carriers sometimes change the departure time of short-haul or domestic flights at short notice, and in some instances, schedules shown in the computers of intercontinental carriers differ from those actually flown by smaller local carriers. We advise you that it is your responsibility to be meticulous in locally reconfirming directly with the carrier operating the flight. We accept no liability for the consequences of flights missed owing to the passenger’s failure to reconfirm. Clients flying in economy class to long-haul destinations should be aware that flights are often full and you may not be able to get seats together. We also recommend that you check in early for a long flight, and in any case not less than 3 hours before the scheduled departure time. If your flight is cancelled or delayed, your flight ticket is downgraded or boarding is denied by your airline in circumstances which would entitle you to claim compensation or any other payment from the airline under EC Regulation No 261/2004 - the Denied Boarding Regulations 2004, you must pursue the airline for the compensation or other payment due to you. All sums you receive or are entitled to receive from the airline concerned by virtue of these Regulations represent the full amount of your entitlement to compensation or any other payment arising from such cancellation, delay, downgrading or denied boarding. This includes any disappointment, distress, inconvenience or effect on any other arrangements. The fact a delay may entitle you to cancel your flight does not automatically entitle you to cancel any other arrangements even where those arrangements have been made in conjunction with your flight. We have no liability to make any payment to you in relation to the Denied Boarding Regulations or in respect of any flight cancellation or delay, downgrading of any flight ticket or denial of any boarding as the full amount of your entitlement to any compensation or other payment (as dealt with above) is covered by the airline's obligations under the Denied Boarding Regulations. If your airline does not comply with these rules, you should complain to the Air Transport Users’ Council on 020 7240 6061 www.auc.org.uk We cannot accept liability for any delay unless it has a material effect on your holiday arrangements. See clause 4.

You undertake to behave with propriety and in such a manner as in no way causes or is likely to cause distress, danger or annoyance to other clients and/or any third party or damage to property. If, in the view of ourselves, our employees, agents or suppliers, you are in breach of this clause, we reserve the right to terminate your contract and neither we nor the providers of any of the services in question will have any further contractual obligations to you either in respect of covering any expenses, paying any compensation or refunds, or arranging for your return home. When you book with us, you accept responsibility for any damage or loss caused by you. Full payment for any such damage or loss (reasonably estimated if not precisely known) must be paid direct at the time to the accommodation owner or manager or other supplier. If the actual cost of the loss or damage exceeds the amount paid where estimated, you must pay the difference once known. If the actual cost is less than the amount paid, the difference will be refunded. If you fail to do so, you will be responsible for meeting any claims subsequently made against us (together with our own and the other party’s full legal costs) as a result of your actions. You must ensure that all your travel documents, full passports, visas, vaccination certificates, currency and travellers cheques are in order and valid for travel. All costs incurred in obtaining such documentation must be paid by you. We regret we cannot accept any liability if you are refused entry onto any transport or into any country due to failure on your part to carry correct documentation. Weare able to give general advice on these matters for British citizens holding a British passport. However, non-British citizens and non British passport holders should check with their embassy or consulate vis-a-vis current requirements. See also our General Information section. If failure to have any necessary travel or other documents results in fines, surcharges or other financial penalty being imposed on us, you will be responsible for reimbursing us accordingly. The name on your airline tickets must be the name that appears on your full passport. Please note that if you believe that we have stated orally that a particular facility or service should be available, but is not in the brochure or in writing from us, please make reference to it on the booking form so that we may confirm it to you when accepting your booking. 9. Complaints Should you have any complaints about any aspect of your holiday arrangements, you must inform our local representative or tour leader immediately and the supplier of the arrangements concerned. Problems can most easily be dealt with on the spot. Please note, if you do not report a problem or complaint which, if it had been reported at the time it occurred could have been resolved there and then we cannot accept any liability in respect of that problem or complaint. It is sensible to expect a client travelling in the developing world to be reasonably resourceful if things go wrong. If you experience any difficulties, contact us in the UK on our 24 hour emergency telephone service. The number will be found on your pre-departure information and with your tickets. In the unlikely event that an acceptable solution cannot be found, you should then write to us within 28 days of your return with full details of your complaint. If you fail to follow this complaints procedure, your right to claim the compensation you may otherwise have been entitled to may be affected or even lost as a result. If we cannot reach an amicable solution to any dispute you do have the right to refer the dispute to the Association of Independent Tour Operators which operates an Independent Dispute Service (details on request) for resolution of the dispute by a mediator provided the claim does not involve personal accident, injury or illness. 10. The brochure and quotation We have taken every care in ensuring that the information in the brochure and given in quotations/itineraries is correct at the time of publication. However we are sure you will appreciate that subsequently minor alterations may arise. We reserve the right to change any of the prices, services or other particulars contained in this brochure or any quotation at any time before we enter into a contract with you. If there is any change we will notify you before we enter into such contract. Where we state that additional information, a fact sheet or a dossier is available

on a particular itinerary or programme, this information should be regarded as a term of the contract. The hotel classifications given in our brochure, quotations and dossiers and fact sheets are for guidance only. They are not based on any national or international classification system, they are the opinions of our staff or agents and are quite subjective. 11. Special requests If you have any special request, you must advise us in writing at the time of booking. Although we will endeavour to pass any reasonable requests on to the relevant supplier, we regret we cannot guarantee any request will be met unless we have specifically confirmed this. For your own protection, you should obtain confirmation in writing from us that your request will be complied with (where it is possible for us to give this) if your request is important to you. Confirmation that a special request has been noted or passed on to the supplier or the inclusion of the special request on your confirmation invoice or any other documentation is not confirmation that the request will be met. Unless and until specifically confirmed, all special requests are subject to availability. We regret we cannot accept any conditional bookings, i.e. any booking which is specified to be conditional on the fulfilment of a particular request. All such bookings will be treated as ‘standard’ bookings subject to the above provisions on special requests. If you have any medical problem or disability which may affect your holiday, please tell us before you confirm your booking so that we can advise as to the suitability of the chosen arrangements. In any event, you must give us full details in writing at the time of booking. You must also promptly advise us if any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday develops after your booking has been confirmed. If we reasonably feel unable to properly accommodate the particular needs of the person concerned, we must reserve the right to decline their reservation or, if full details are not given at the time of booking, cancel when we become aware of these details. 12. Your financial protection We hold an Air Travel Organiser's Licence issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (ATOL number 4817). When you buy an ATOL protected flight-inclusive holiday* from us, you will receive an ATOL Certificate. This lists the flight, accommodation, car hire and/or other services that are financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you, and who to contact if things go wrong. We, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, will provide you with the services listed on the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable). You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme. *The air inclusive holidays and flights we arrange are ATOL protected providing they are made available in the UK. For further information, visit the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk. Not all holiday or travel services offered and sold by us will be protected by the ATOL scheme. In compliance with the UK Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 an insurance policy has been arranged with Travel & General Insurance Company plc, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority, to

protect customers’ pre-payments for packaged travel services which are not covered by the ATOL scheme in the unlikely event of our financial failure. This policy will cover the following; - a refund of such pre-payments if customers have not yet travelled, or - making arrangements to enable the holiday to continue if customers have already travelled, or - returning customers to the starting point of their contracted holiday arrangements with Audley Travel where applicable Customers’ pre-payments are protected by a topp policy. In the unlikely event of financial failure please contact the claims helpline on 0870 0137 965. A copy of the policy is available on request. In the instances where topp protection applies you will not receive an ATOL certificate with your invoice. For further details visit www.audleytravel.com/protect 13. Excursions Please note that we do not provide or arrange excursions other than those listed in your itinerary and forming part of the arrangements booked and paid for in the UK. Our local representatives or guides may put you in touch with local organisers of excursions if you request but we can have no liability for such excursions, as your contract for such excursions will be with a local company providing the services and not with us. 14. Prices and Brochure Accuracy Please note, the information and prices shown in our brochures and/or quotations may have changed by the time you come to book your holiday. Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the brochures, quotations and prices at the time of printing or when they are given to you, regrettably errors do occasionally occur. You must therefore ensure you check all details of your chosen holiday (including the price) with us at the time of booking. 15. Honeymoon Gift Service All honeymoon bookings and use of Audley's Honeymoon Gift Service are subject to our terms & conditions. It is important to note that in the unfortunate event of the cancellation of your booking you will be responsible for all cancellation charges as detailed in our Terms & Conditions. Audley also reserve the right to charge a £150 administration fee to cover refunding all monies to your guests. These refunds will only be made once all cancellation charges have been paid. As the client, you will take on the responsibility for the full payment of the booking as the amount of your guest contributions cannot be guaranteed. Audley Travel Group Limited.
