20 ISLAND EVENTS OCTOBER 2013 hiltonhead.com

Going To CaliforniaBy Georgene Mortimer, Island Winery

A visit to the CentralValley to see vineyardsand grape cultivation in action.

At Island Winery, we partnerwith some of the finest grapegrowers in the country inorder to have the highestquality fruit for our vintages.

Ahead of this year’s grapecrush, I ventured to California’s Central Valleyto inspect the quality of this year’s vintage andto talk face-to-face with the dedicated menand women who grow the grapes that enableus to vint award-winning wines each year.

California’s Mediterranean climate is ideal forthe types of wines we produce at Island Winery. The famed Central Valley is a broad plainrunning the length of the state between theHigh Sierra Nevada and Coastal Ranges. Sofertile is the Central Valley, that nearly all pro-duce consumed in the United States is grownin this swath of country.

The rolling hills framing the region’spicturesque vistas give way to a flat, fertile land-scape ideal for grape growing. Late summerhere is hot and dry, ideal conditions for impart-ing rich flavor notes as the grapes ripen on thevines. Sampling some Cabernet Sauvignonas it grew on the vines, hot from the sun, thegrapes practically burst of natural sweetness.

After fermentation, that sugar will have turnedto alcohol. For the moment, the sweetness isthe raw material for the dozens of subtle flavorsthat one can detect in our wines.

The growers take immense pride in their grapes.Beyond the gaze of the tourists who flock to“wine country” in Napa and Sonoma, theCentral Valley growers boast impeccably mani-

cured vineyards andexpertly pruned vinesas well. They love whatthey do and are all toowilling to invite youinto the back of theirpickup truck for a tour

of the vineyard.

So too do the small army of farm workers whodaily tend each vine by hand. These men andwomen’s dedication and careful stewardshipof every bunch of grapes – from the winterpruning season to their careful packing in thefall harvest – ensures that grapes are as higha quality when they arrive on Hilton Head Islandas the day they were picked.

If you arrive at Island Winery in October, youmay be able to see winemaking in action, aswe transform the harvest’s bounty into winesto be enjoyed throughout the year. Even ifyou can’t make it for this year’s crush, youcan sample works in progress in our barrelroom during our weekly barrel tastings.

These special events allow you to preview thewines before we bottle them. As always, all ofour released wines are available for you tosample free of charge in our tasting room.Come see us and try something new!

The perfect bottle of wine awaits at IslandWinery on Cardinal Road. Store and tastinghours are Monday through Saturday from12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wine Flights andCheese are available from 12:30 p.m. to2:30 p.m. A Wine & Cheese Happy Hour isoffered Monday-Thursday starting at 4 p.m.(843) 842-3141 or islandwinery.com.

– Don’t enter the water if you can’tswim.

– Swim near a lifeguard. United States Lifessaving Association statistics show that substantially more drownings occur in areas where there are no lifeguards.

– Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.

– Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents.

These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.

– Don’t let your kids swim unsuper-vised, even in guarded areas.

– Don’t swim alone. Use the buddysystem so that someone always knows where you are so they canget help if needed.

– Don’t overestimate your swim-ming ability. Stay in chest deep or less water to insure you don’t

get stuck in water over your head.

– Don’t rely on flotation devices. – Swim parallel to shore if you

want to swim long distances.– Don’t swim against the current.

Swim across the current to escape the pull.

– Always swim sober.– Don’t dive into unknown water

64 ISLAND EVENTS OCTOBER 2013 hiltonhead.com

Armed with a set of fangs that wouldmake any snake or vampire jealous, avoracious appetite and an explosive strike, the speckled sea trout ranks in the topthree inshore gamefish, along withflounder and red drum.

Often attacking prey their own size, the seatrout’s strike is hard to beat. One nice “gator”trout I caught last winter almost took the rodout of my hands when he struck the plasticbait I tossed near the bank. My intentions wereto let it sink a minute, so I had relaxed my gripon the rod. I certainly didn't expect the force ofthe trout’s attack. The fish weighed six pounds.

After a cold winter, the trout population some-times dips, but it seems like the mild past winterholds promise of booming schools of trout forthe fall. In September, large schools of 13-inchfish were plentiful and, with the trout’s mon-strous appetite, they should be much largeras winter passes. Some of their favorite preyincludes finger mullet, mud minnows and shrimp. One fish I cleaned recently had a small eel inhis stomach as long as the trout himself.

While shrimp are plentiful in local creeks, Iprefer to use them as live bait. As the watertemperature drops and the shrimp leave, I

switch to artificial baits, using soft plastics withpaddle tails or screw tails, scented plastics likeGulp products or hard lures like the Mirrolureor Mighty Mike. I’ve even caught them on achunk of dead mullet on the bottom whilefishing for redfish, but the other methodsshould produce better numbers of fish.

If using a live bait, finger mullet, shrimp or mudminnow, a popping cork with three foot ofleader and a 2/0 or 3/0 circle or kahle hookwill produce good results. Small live menhadenare also favorite food for the voracious trout.Working the popping cork vigorously willincrease your strikes. Although some fish spookeasily, the trout is truly fearless. Long ago, weused to troll the grass edge of the creeks. Themotor never even bothered them!

Defined by a sleek and silvery iridescence andcovered with signature spots, the speckled seatrout is a beautiful, hard-striking, tough fightingfish. This abundant fish provides an anglingexperience that’s hard to beat here in theLowcountry. When taken to the table, the deli-cious while flaky flesh is the icing on the cake!

Enjoy every minute on the water this month.October is a great time to drop a line andenjoy the stunning scenery that makes HiltonHead Island so special. Happy fishing!

Bats are an essential part of South Carolina’secosystem, helping reduce high insect populations.Sunsets on Hilton Head Island can offer a greatdisplay of Little Brown Bats year-round. Thesemammals can be seen practicing their preciseacrobatics. With Halloween right around the corner, make sure to take note of these little guests ofhonor.

Little Brown Bats, known as myotis lucifugus, aresmall, flying nocturnal mammals. They can growto be about four inches long and weigh up to14 grams. Their wing span is fairly large comparedto the rest of their size, reaching up to 10 inches. The female is usually larger than the male. Theyhave glossy fur ranging from dark brown to gold-en or even red brown. They are most commonlyseen at dusk and dawn, soaring through the skylooking for food.

While Little Brown Bats may be unseen during theheat of the day and the darkest part of the night, they are very active at dusk and dawn. They canbe found over water ways, in forests or even overmeadows.

They use ultrasonic echolocation to search forinsects, which are their primary food source. Batsemit a sound out of their mouth, which reflectsoff of insects or objects in front of them and thenback to a flap of skin on the external ear. This soundcreates a pattern, letting the bat know the differ-ence between food and objects. Bats eat insectsranging from mosquitoes and midges to mothsand beetles. At peak feeding time, a bat may beable to consume up to 1,200 insects in one hour.A bat will eat half of its body weight in one night.

Little Brown Bats can be found in almost any typeof environment across the United States. They tendto be colonial and usually roost in large groups, preferring forested areas. They will roost in manydifferent areas during a 24-hour period and have

specific day roosts, night roosts, nursing roostsand hibernating roosts.

Day roosts may be located in trees or creviceswhere the bats spend their time resting and groom-ing. Night roosts are generally warmer and mayconsist of large clusters. Hibernation roosts arethe warmest, nestled inside trees, caves, buildingsand other manmade structures. Nursing roostsinclude only the mother and her young and willbe used each year. It is thought that bats changetheir roosting areas throughout the day due totemperatures and proximity to food. Bats are alsoaware of the accumulation of guano in an areaand will move from that roost. Bats may travelup to 180 miles to and from any of these typesof roosts. They are able to identify previously usedroosts by echolocation and scent.

Little Brown Bats typically produce one offspringa year. During breeding season in April and May,a single female may mate with many males. Theyhave a gestation period of 60 days, with mostyoung (pups) being born in June and July. Theyoung will nurse off of the mother for about 20days. Within three weeks, the pups will be able tofly. They become independent within four weeks.Little Brown Bats are fully grown a month afterthey are born. These fascinating mammals gen-erally live to be about seven years old, but theoldest bat has been documented at 30 years.

You’re not alone. Lowcountrycrustaceans inhabit diverseenvironments and exhibit fascinating behaviors.

Feeling Crabby?By Jessie Renew, Outside Hilton Head

As a longtime kayak guide on Hilton Head Islandand in the Lowcountry, I have seen and experi-enced the great variety of wildlife in our marshes, beaches, woods and waterways. I’ve alwaysbeen fascinated by the abundant variety of crabspecies that call these places home. From themicroscopic to the large, inhabiting all of ourdiverse environments, crabs in the Lowcountryget around.

All Lowcountry crab species begin their life asmicroscopic planktonic larvae, floating in tidalcurrents until they are large enough to start theirlife on land and in the water. The smallest adultspecies of crab, the oyster crab, is less than acentimeter across and very difficult to spotbecause of its unique lifestyle. The oyster crablives most of its life within the shell of oysters orother bivalves. Oysters pull water into their shellsand through their bodies, filtering out food par-ticles. The oyster crab’s unique relationship withthe oyster allows it to get in on this feedingtechnique and consume some of the food theoyster intends for itself.

Although you can occasionally see oyster crabsscuttling along oyster beds or hanging on piecesof marsh grass, they are most commonly spottedat local oyster roasts. Diners will crack open theirsteamed oyster to find these perfect little crabscooked inside. Some think it is good luck to getan oyster crab in your oyster, and all who aredaring enough to eat them agree these minia-ture crustaceans are delicious.

A slightly larger cousin of the oyster crab is thesquareback marsh crab, also known as wharfcrab or box crab, which grows to roughly twocentimeters. It is characterized by its dark brownappearance and rectangular shaped shell. Thisspecies of crab is everywhere! You can find themhanging out with their similar-sized friend, thefiddler crab, in marshes, on docks and wharfs,at the beach and in the woods. Some highly

mobile members of the species have been foundas far as 100 miles inland. The reason they havesuch a wide range of habitats is that they are trueomnivores: they will eat anything - small fiddlercrabs, insects, snails, fresh marsh grass, decay-ing leaves, fungi and plankton.

One of my favorite activities on Hilton Head iswalking the beach looking for shells and otherwildlife. It’s a special treat when I can spot theelusive ghost crab, by far the fastest and mostagile crab species around. The ghost crab mea-sures roughly seven centimeters across and ischaracterized by its whitish yellow clear shell.Since they are so fair in color and live in the hot, harsh beach environment, ghost crabs dig bur-rows to protect themselves. Young crabs chooseto burrow closer to the water line, while oldercrabs dig further up the beach. During the day, they mostly stay in their burrows, coming out atnight to scavenge for food and wet their gills.

The largest crab to be found in the Lowcountryis, in fact, not a crab at all. The horseshoe crabis most closely related to trilobites that existed544 million years ago, and is in a class ofspecies which includes insects and spiders. Likemany species of “real crabs,” horseshoe crabseat a varied diet of clams, oysters and otheranimals. However, these living fossils have noteeth! Instead they use their strong legs to mushup their prey before passing it to the mouth. Likebirds, horseshoe crabs have gizzards, whichfilter out the hard, indigestible parts beforeentering the stomach.

There are many other types of crabs to be seen inthe Lowcountry, including the fiddler crab, blue crab, stone crab, spider crab and hermit crab. Eachhas its own set of interesting behaviors and adap-tations. Get outside on a tour of our local naturalplaces and see some of them for yourself!

For more than 30 years, Outside Hilton Headhas provided personalized adventures forall ages, from kayak, fishing, nature anddolphin tours to kids’ camps, history excur-sions, family outings and stand-up paddleboarding. Recovery shots from awkward lies are tricky, but with practice any player can become an accomplished escape artist.

Recovery ShotsFrom Awkward LiesBy Doug Weaver,Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort

Walter Hagen, the five-time PGAChampionship winner, mentioned thateven in the tournaments he won, he wouldembarrass himself by hitting terrible shotsthat made him angry enough to kick hisbag and shout. However, he got over itand was thinking clearly before he exe-cuted his next shot – which was oftenbrilliant.

While Hagen expected the best, he was pre-pared for the worst. Sidehill lies are a worst-case scenario for many golfers because theyare rarely practiced. Here are some tips onpreparing for those shots, so you can performa Hagen-like recovery when you find yourselfin an awkward lie.

For all shots hit from uneven, sidehill lies, thesame basics apply. First, find your balance byleaning on your toes, then shifting your weightto your heels. Find a point in between whereyour balance feels like it is under your shoe-strings. Once you find your balance, makemultiple practice swings to allow your body toadjust to the feeling of that particular shot. When you're ready to hit, ask one of your play-ing partners to watch where your ball goes soyou can focus on making solid impact andswinging under control.

In addition to these general tips, keep the fol-lowing specifics in mind for these different typesof trouble shots:

1. Ball Above Your FeetGrip down on the club in order to maintain

your basic posture. You may lose distance, soconsider taking more club. Remember that theball flight tends to go in the direction of yourbody, so for a right-hander you’ll probably hitthe ball left. Your swing will feel flatter, but trustit and make a confident, controlled swing.

2. Ball Below Your FeetTake one more club than usual from thatdistance and avoid allowing your weight toshift to your toes. Your swing plane will alreadybe steeper than normal, making it easy to loseyour balance and fall forward if your weight ison your toes. Right-handers should aim to theleft of the target to prepare for the ball to goright.

3. Forward Foot Higher Than The Back FootIn this scenario, your backswing feels easybecause your club and body are movingdownhill. However, your downswing andfollow-through must be exaggerated to helpyou transfer your weight to the forward foot.Practice getting to your finish with your normaltempo and rhythm. This shot will fly higher andshorter than usual, so take one club more tocompensate.

4. Forward Foot Lower Than The Back FootThis shot can go farther than you would imag-ine. The key is to practice your backswing sothat you get the normal weight transfer to yourback foot. After impact your weight will transferforward down the hill and you may lose yourbalance, but this is OK. Allow your swing tofinish and take a step forward down the hill.

RULES FOR THE ROAD

Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a

red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound yourwarning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend

to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.

Be courteous, alert and predictable.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides over 50 milesof public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment ofpedestrians and cyclists.

At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are idealfor biking. Public beaches are indicated on the IslandEvents’ Island Map.

Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with anIsland-wide map on one side, and a localized map of thearea on the other.
