Meet Our Fabric Designers

“I’ve always been passionate about art and design! After my combined 30 years of designing textiles with Hoffman of California and Island Batik, each new design and fabric line is a thrill to create. I draw my inspiration from nature, pulling elements from the shapes and textures I find during my time spent outdoors.

My only rule when it comes to design is that there are no rules! With fabric design, anything goes. I think you’ll love the fabrics in our Fall collections - rich, vibrant colors in an array of patterns - organic mixed with abstract and a touch of whimsy.”

Kathy is the talent behind all of our fabrics, having designed the Fall 2014 line, Basics, Blenders and Rayons, and the Changing Tides collection for Stacy Michell. She also directed the production of Fourth and Sixth Designs new line, Full Bloom, helping to bring the collection to life.

“We’re sisters, quilt designers, teachers, quilt makers and authors. We want to live in a world where quilting is not only fun but where every quilter enjoys complete satisfaction with her or his finished projects and level of creativity! It was our desire to let our own imaginations and creativity run wild with not just our patterns, but our own fabric line. We’re excited for the launch of our first line for Island Batik - Full Bloom. The line is a burst of spring colors, in a cheery garden palette. Leafy greens, delicate pinks and purples and pops of yellow and orange come together in three quilt projects - our Full Bloom Block of the Month, Mile High, and Spring Forward. Each project showcases these beautiful fabrics in a different way, illustrating the diversity of the line!”

“Change is Good! Change your schedule! Make time to Quilt! With the introduction of my first fabric line “Changing Tides”, I have finally found time to quilt. Over the course of my career, I have dyed and sold over 250,000 yards of fabric, leaving me with little time to quilt.

My “Aloha Ya’ll” style of quilting combines the challenging Hawaiian style designs with modern machine appliqué techniques that make these projects so accomplish-able. The base goods that Island Batik works with is just perfect for these projects. The crisp edge of fused, raw-edge, appliqué makes the lovely thread of the edge stitch shine. Stable goods keep appliqué from skewing on the bias. Resulting in impeccable finishes for these projects made simple with changes to my special techniques.”

Changing Tides is a collection of vibrant, tropical fabrics designed by Kathy Engle for Stacy Michell. The cool blues, greens, and purples mixed with warm yellows, oranges and pink come together in Stacy’s signature Hawaiian style applique projects. These fabrics are also highlighted in a fresh new quilt from Stacy inspired by her love of Asian culture, to be premiered at International Quilt Market.

Stacy believes in creating easy to finish projects by using all the resources available to today’s quilters. Check out the new patterns she has with these designs. Also, SoftFuse Premium and die cuts are available to make these great Hawaiian Appliques in your shop to sell as pre-cut, pre-fused, how can you go wrong with that appliqué!
