Shi’ite

• Short for Ahiat Ali or followers of Ali.

• Ali was Muhammad’s cousin, a philosopher-warrior.

• His followers say that he was the only one with the spiritual authority to succeed Muhammad.

Sunni

• Followers believed that the caliphate should go to whoever would be best equipped politically to maintain the Muslim Empire.
