Have a discussion with someone who is part of the new age movement about the law of attraction

and they will confirm that this is a belief which basically teaches that human essence is spirit, God is

spirit and dwells in everything, and the thoughts of our spirit can induce God to make our wishes a

reality. This belief system teaches that consciously or unconsciously, for good or bad, our thoughts

and beliefs dictate reality. Our physical condition, including health, success, and wealth, is a direct

results of what we expect. If we are sick, it is because our thoughts are unhealthy. If we are wealthy,

it is because we believe we should be. New Thought has been adopted by both secular and

religious movements.

The law of attraction and the “I AM” is a basic tenet in this system. It says God is in everything (a

form of pantheism). When our spirit or thoughts concentrate on something, like health or a new car,

the part of God in that thing is naturally drawn toward us. Thoughts, wishes, and expectations will

attract their own fulfilment. The ill are ill because their minds are deceived. Right thinking alters the

electrical impulses in the brain to become well again. The poor are poor because their pessimistic

thoughts attract poverty. The more we understand God and how He works, the more powerful the

attraction. God indwells everything, and if we concentrate on what we want, He will have no choice

but to bring that part of Himself to us.

But is such a philosophy bible centred? Certainly passages from the Bible have been used to

support this belief system.

Did the New Age Movement hijack concepts and principles from the Bible which the majority of

Christians failed to act upon or has New Age principles and concepts being infused into mainstream

Christianity with a Christianized covering?

That is the million dollar question because Christian authors such as Joel Osteen have been

identified as a growing category of influential Christian Leaders whose system of theology shares a

striking similarity to the principles and concepts found within the new age movement.

It is not so much about the personality but more the origins and associations of the belief system

that we need to be aware of and in this edition of the Global Watch Weekly we seek to understand

more about “I AM”.

THE OSTEEN PHENOMENON

Joel Osteen is the author of seven New York Times bestsellers. He is the senior pastor of America's largest congregation, Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. More than 45,000 people attend services there every week.

His televised messages are seen by more than 10 million viewers each week in the United States, and millions more in 100 nations around the world.

His 24-hour channel on SiriusXM Satellite Radio and millions of social media followers have prompted numerous publications to name him as one of the most influential Christian leaders in the world.

However in Christian conservative circles Osteen has been labelled in much more negative connotations. Some take issue with what they believe to be a theology which is minimal on sin and Calvary and one which is much more weighted to material gain and self development.

The debate rages on and the objective of this edition of the global watch weekly is not to get embroiled in the debate on Osteen himself but rather to investigate the title which he used for the release of his latest book.

Osteen has been a prolific writer and unlike any other Christian author his books have consistently been blockbuster successes within the secular world where his material has pre-dominantly centralized on personal self development and discovering the inner you.

Wise Choices, It’s Your Time, I Declare and You Can You Will have made tremendous inroads into the mainstream. Where other Christian authors books tend to largely be purchased by Christians, Osteen's books seems to be more popular with the secular world.

Some will see this as proof that his message is so watered down that the world doesn't see the difference. Others will say its clever and sophisticated marketing that draws people who would never have time for Christianity, into the Kingdom of God.

In February 2016 Osteen was featured on the February cover of Success magazine. This is a magazine which has a history of including on its front cover the most influential people in the world today. Previous covers have included Anthony Robbins, Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Usher, Harrison Ford and Jackie Chan amongst others.

Reasons for Osteen appearing on this front cover was in promotion of his latest book that was released towards the end of 2015.

The “Power of I AM: Two Words That Will Change Your Life” has been an instant blockbuster hit and continues the consistency of Osteen's books becoming overnight best sellers.

THE REALITY BEIND THE “I AM”

A summary of the book states

“Can two words give you the power to change your life? Yes they can! In the pages of his new book, bestselling author Joel Osteen shares a profound principle based on a simple truth. Whatever follows the words "I am" will always come looking for you.”

This edition of the global watch weekly is not going to be a witch hunt against Joel Osteen but more a focus on the term “I AM” and the reason for its evidently popular use within the mainstream.

It is not just Joel Osteen who places specific emphasis on “I AM”. Bishop Tudor Bismark, senior pastor of New Life Covenant Church in Harare, Zimbabwe sells a CD of his message about the power of “I AM”. The synopsis of this message states,

“When God created us, we were made in His image and in His likeness. Based on this principle we have the power and authority to speak to a situation, and speak about our destiny and ourselves, and what we speak must manifest. As Bishop Tudor Bismark teaches us in this message, we can invoke God's name correctly or incorrectly thus engaging the Earth and the atmosphere to manifest what we decree. If we decree we are broke, ugly, depressed or alone, then the atmosphere has no choice but to manifest what we have said. The "I AM" is what God created in Adam before the fall. Our presence, mindset and decrees

should be such that everything and everyone around us is not able to distinguish between God and us. God wants us to invoke the "I AM" factor in our lives so that we may declare, "The Kingdom of God is at hand!"

A TERM OF BIBLICAL ORIGIN

In the Bible, the term “I AM” is the Name that God tells Moses in Exodus 3:14 he can refer to Him when he goes back to Egypt to have a showdown with Pharaoh.

“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

God tells Moses this through a bush burning of fire which is not consumed. It is a sombre, awesome and fearsome time. So holy is it that God demands that Moses even remove his shoes, for even the ground where this is happening is holy ground.

In the new testament the “I AM” takes on a completely different context where Jesus in his Olivet discourse makes reference to the fact that during the end times there will arise a number of influential people who will lead people astray by promoting themselves as “I AM Christ”.

THE AGE OF THE I AM

Did know that “I AM” is a veiled language used by occultists to signify belief in this idea that one can become an “ascended master” through self awareness. The phrase I AM means “Integrated Ascended Master” and that is precisely why we see it so often from the world of entertainment.



THE ORIGIN OF THE I AM MOVEMENT

Did you know that there is a literal "I AM" Movement founded in the early 1930s by Guy Ballard (1878–1939) and his wife Edna (1886–1971) in Chicago, Illinois? It is an offshoot of theosophy and a major precursor of several New Age religions including the Church Universal and Triumphant. The movement had up to a million followers in 1938 and is still active today on a smaller scale.

The movement believes in the existence of a group called the Ascended Masters, a hierarchy of supernatural beings that includes they say, the original Theosophical Masters such as Jesus Christ, El Morya Khan, Maitreya, and in addition several dozen more beyond the original 20 Masters of the Ancient Wisdom as described by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in her publication “The Secret Doctrine.”



These "Ascended Masters" are believed to be humans who have lived in a succession of reincarnations in physical bodies. Over time they became highly advanced souls, able to move beyond the cycles of "re-embodiment" and karma, and attained their "Ascension", becoming immortal. The Ascended Masters are believed to communicate to humanity through certain trained messengers per Blavatsky, including Guy and Edna Ballard.

Because Jesus is believed to be one of the Ascended Masters, making the "Christ Light" available to seekers who wish to move out of darkness, many of the members of the "I AM" Activity consider it to be a Christian religion. According to the Los Angeles Magazine, Ballard said he was the re-embodiment of George Washington, an Egyptian priest, and a noted French musician.

The "I AM" Activity was the continuation of the teachings received by H. P. Blavatsky and William Quan Judge. Ballard was always guided and inspired by the writings of William Quan Judge (1851-1896), who used the pseudonym David Lloyd due to the persecution of his enemies in the Theosophical Society. Then Ballard came in contact with the Mahatma called "Ascended Master" Saint Germain.

HELENA BLAVATSKY

The New Age Movement has its roots in ancient history, although the revival of New Age as we know it today, is anchored in 1860-1890, in the work of a Russian born Madame Helena Blavatsky (1831- 1891). The crucial role of Helena Blavatsky can best be illustrated with the following quote:

"... Madame Blavatsky ... stands out as the fountainhead of modern occult thought, and was either the originator and/or popularizer of many of the ideas and terms which have a century later been assembled within the New Age Movement. The Theosophical Society, which she cofounded, has been the major advocate of occult philosophy in the West and the single most important avenue of Eastern teaching to the West." (J. Gordon Melton, Jerome Clark and Aidan A. Kelly, editors, New Age Almanac, Detroit, Michigan, Gale Research Inc., 1991, p. 16, quoted in the Blavatsky archives on-line)

Blavatsky believed that the Ascended Masters are individuals who were formerly embodied on the earth and learned the lessons of life during their incarnations. They gained mastery over the limitations of the matter planes, (In esoteric cosmology, a plane, other than the physical world is conceived as a subtle state of consciousness that transcends the known physical universe).

An Ascended Master, in such an understanding, has become God-like and a source of unconditional “Divine Love” to all life, and through the Ascension has united with his or her own “God Self,” the “I AM Presence.” This is reflected in the New Age writings:

Helena Blavatsky's book, Isis Unveiled, regarded as the "Bible" for New Ager Spiritualists, was written supposedly under the guidance of a disembodied set of these "Higher Spiritual Beings" that she called "Great Spirits" or "Mahatmas".



She even set up an altar for them in her home!

According to the reports of Colonel Olcott, Madame Blavatsky wrote Isis Unveiled while in an altered state of consciousness:

"Her pen would be flying over the page, when she would suddenly stop, look into space with the vacant eye of the clairvoyant seer, shorten her vision as though to look at something held invisibly in the air before her, and begin copying on her paper what she saw. The quotation finished, her eyes would resume their natural expression." - Henry Steele Olcott, "Old Diary Leaves", 1895, Vol. I, pg. 208

These so called Spirit Masters who dictated to Helena what to write were supposedly concerned about guiding mankind on to the right path; and they played a large part in advising her to start the Theosophical Society. They also advised her and Colonel Olcott to begin viewing things in a more "Global" sense and to begin a New World Order.

THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

The Secret is a best-selling 2006 self-help book written by Rhonda Byrne, based on the earlier film of the same name. It is based on the law of attraction and claims that positive thinking can create life-changing results such as increased wealth, health, and happiness.

The book has sold more than 19 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 46 languages, but has attracted a great deal of controversy, as well as being parodied in several TV programs.

The basic premise of The Secret was borne from the troubles that affected Rhonda Byrne. She is a

television producer and mother in her fifties. Many years ago she “hit a rocky patch in her business and personal lives.” Her father died suddenly and her relationships with her family and work colleagues were in turmoil. It was at that moment of despair when she “wept and wept and wept” that she discovered a long-neglected book entitled The Science of Getting Rich.

In the book she discovered how to let your thoughts and feelings give you everything that you desire. She then dedicated herself to sharing these principles with the world in the form of The Secret. Many have called it marketing genius. After all, all of us want to be in on a secret. So why wouldn’t we all want to know the secret to life?

That is what Rhonda Byrne promised in her DVD. Torchlights flicker on the 90-minute DVD and the soundtrack throbs portentously before it gets down to giving you the secret for getting your hands on that new BMW.

The appeal of The Secret is understandable. People want to be wealthy and healthy. In Christian circles this concept is known as “name it and claim it,” where the individual simply professes a desire and then claims that God will provide it.

Ms. Byrne and her Master Teachers are more than willing to use scripture to make their point. They ask us to turn to Matthew 21:22 and Mark 11:24 where Jesus tells His disciples,

”Whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”

Lisa Nichols a Master Teacher, informs us that the first step to achieving our desires is to ask.

“Make a command of the Universe. Let the Universe know what you want. The Universe responds to your thoughts.”

Nichols continues by stating that the second step in achieving all that we want is to believe.

“Believe that it is already yours. Have what I love to call unwavering faith. Believing in the unseen.”

In the moment you ask, and believe and know you already have it in the unseen, the entire Universe shifts to bring it into the seen. In other words, God/The Universe immediately tunes to your frequency and then because of the Law of Attraction, he is obligated to supply all your wants. Vitale makes another head-scratching comment when he states,

“The Universe will start to rearrange itself to make it happen for you. You don’t need to know how it’s going to come about. You don’t need to know how the Universe will arrange itself.”

The third step according to Nichols is to receive that which we have commanded. Nichols states that an important part of our receiving is for us to feel wonderful about it.

“This is a feeling Universe. If you just intellectually believe something, but you have no corresponding feeling underneath that, you don’t necessarily have enough power to manifest what you want in your life. You have to feel it.”

The premise that mankind and the impersonal Universe are interconnected is widely taught within occultic, New Age, literature. They teach that all-is-One. Man is an integral part of The Supreme Mind and he is seen as being one with it, to the point that he is the source of the Universe.

The concept of an impersonal energy or force that is the “Universe” is not a new thought. It has been around for a long time and has been recognized in numerous belief systems that do not reflect God’s truth. Gary Zukav teaches that we should trust the Universe because it is working toward our best and most appropriate end. He adds that if we do trust the Universe it will provide all that we desire: “Let your higher

self complete its task”. In other words, allow the Universe (God) to complete its work in you as you come to fully realize that your “Higher Self" is the Divine Teacher.

Wayne Dyer helps clarify the role that the Higher Self plays in our understanding of who we truly are. In his text Your Sacred Self, he makes this observation:

“When you consult your higher self, you learn that you are a part of the same divine essence that connects all of us to the source of spirit. There is one God, one source with many different manifestations.”

Dyer says that we relate to others in terms of the divineness that is flowing through them, which is a manifestation of the energy supporting the physical world. On the path of the sacred way, you experience that force flowing through you and others. He declares that we short-circuit the manifestation of our Higher Selves (the divine spirit within) when we practice a toxic lifestyle. A toxic lifestyle would be one that denied man’s personal divinity. Dyer goes on to say,

“To allow your highest self to triumph in this conflict between purity and toxicity, you must let go of any idea that at your core you are evil or a sinner.”

To sum it up Ms. Byrne makes this observation,

“So whichever way you look at it, the result is still the same. We are One. We are all connected, and we are all part of the One Energy Field, or the One Supreme Mind, or the One Consciousness, or the One Creative Source. Call it whatever you want, but we are all One.” The message of The Secret is plain for all to see: “You are God in a physical body. You are Spirit in the flesh. You are Eternal Life expressing itself as you. You are a cosmic being. You are all power. You are magnificence. You are the creator, and you are creating the creation of You on this planet.”

CONNECTING THE DOTS

The Secret shows its sleight of hand in when it is explaining that the world is based on energy and so is mankind. They say one man can power an entire city block if we could harness his energy, which ironically shows us the nihilistic future world of The Matrix.

In the DVD version of The Secret we see the progression of the occultists near the end when they start to dabble with the idea that one can become God. They’re not speaking of theosis where one can be united with God through prayer and fasting; but rather finding God inside of themselves and becoming god themselves.

This is the end game for the occultists because they seek to usher in the New Age where man becomes super-man and abandons the idea of an external God altogether.

At the end of this segment we see a quote from a man named Robert Collier, who was a New Thought occultist who wrote a book called The Secret of the Ages in which we see the same arguments over and over about visualization, the Law of Attraction, and the power of the mind:

“In the realm of mind, the realm in which is all practical power, you can possess what you want at once. You have but to claim it, to visualize it, to bring it into actuality—and it is yours for the taking. For the Genie-of-your-Mind can give you power over circumstances. Health, happiness and prosperity. And all you need to put it to work is an earnest, intense desire.”

So it would seem that “The Secret” is just a repackaged form of Blavatsky’s “Secret Doctrine” and Collier’s “The Secret of the Ages.” None of

these things are secretive; they are just deceitful.

Helena Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine talks about Lucifer being the Holy Ghost as is evident from the essay on Blavatskytheosophy.com:

Here we see the teachings of Theosophy – which are at times deliberately symbolical, allegorical, and esoteric – the Lightbringer or Bringer of Dawn (Lucifer in Latin) is our Mind Principle, our individual self-consciousness and spark of intelligence, which was awakened in mankind around the middle period of the Third Root Race, also known as the Lemurian Epoch.

Our mind can either be our adversary (which is what the word “satan” literally means) or it can be the lightbearer (the Lucifer) of spiritual Truth to us, the knowledge of which brings about our liberation from ignorance, including spiritual self-ignorance.

As you can see, Blavatsky’s Law of Attraction and enlightenment through self awareness is all MAN-centered with no mention of Christ. Of course this is to be expected from her; but it is not to be expected from Christian authors.

IT IS THE INFLUENCE WHICH IS KEY

Do not get us wrong. There is truth to the idea that words and thoughts have power. There is a connection between the physical world and the spiritual/supernatural world. This is evident in the following scripture

“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 18:18

However the issue is that these closeted occultists are teaching us to find God within; not from Jesus (who taught that he was the way to God the Father), which opens up one to the wrong influences.

When we believe in self then it calls into question the need for an external creator. The fact that we are our own salvation and redeemer. God is reduced to some kind of cosmic universal force that we align our spirit with to experience what we want and need.



The “I AM” concept is nothing more than a repackaging of the Integrated Ascended Masters idea in which people can ascend into being god- not in the organized religion sense, but in this new occult way of finding God from within ourselves. This opens one up to dangers of self-fulfilling prophecies and false contentment.

The problem is that many are trying to find Christ through methods that only distract one from the true path. Many claim to have some special gnosis of Christianity but the truth is that Jesus and His disciples established the Church 2000+ years ago and the way of salvation is the same as it always was. Occultists are attempting to hijack the truth and subvert it while setting many on the wrong path towards their god– Lucifer.

CONCLUSION

The primary error of “The Secret” law of attraction is its view, or lack thereof, of God. In the law of attraction, God, if He even exists, is nothing more than a universal energy force that we manipulate by our thoughts and feelings. The law of attraction assumes a pantheistic (God is everything) view of God. The Secret denies the ideas of a personal God (with thoughts, feelings, and emotions) and a sovereign God (omnipotent and omniscient, perfectly in control of everything).

Nebuchadnezzar, the greatest king of ancient Babylon and a prime candidate for someone who would know “The Secret,” declared,

“Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified Him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; His kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as He pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back His hand or say to Him: ‘What have you done?’” (Daniel 4:34-35).

According to the proponents of the law of attraction, we are all “incarnations of God.” We are all our own gods, able to create our own reality, able to control our own destiny. This lie is not a secret, and it is nothing new. Satan’s primary temptation has always been to obtain knowledge and thereby to become like God,

“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God…” (Genesis 3:5).

Satan’s own fall from glory was this same error,

“You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High’” (Isaiah 14:13-14).

The message of “The Secret” is the same message that Satan used to tempt Adam and Eve into sin: “You do not need God…you can be God!” And just as Satan will fail in his quest to be God (Isaiah 14:15; Revelation 20:10), so too will all those who seek to be their own god will fail:

“'You are "gods" … but you will die like mere men…” (Psalm 82:6-7).

The true “secret” is that God is in control. God has a sovereign and perfect plan for us. The key is getting in tune with God, thereby understanding His heart and knowing His will.

“Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun” (Psalm 37:4-6).

There is nothing wrong with self development and discovering the skills and potential that God has put inside us. However never forget that we are still the creature and God is still the omnipotent creator.

Maybe we would be more comfortable if Joel Osteen and other Christian authors emphasized the additional text below in italics.

“Yes I am energized, I am powerful, I am important, I am resourceful....by the power of the Almighty God who created me in his image and likeness and whom is the source of my being”

All we ask is that there is a reminder that God is the object of our faith and belief rather than a belief in some abstract divine within ourselves which serves only to fulfill the age old plan of the enemy from the garden of Eden.

Just amazing how some people just don’t see it.
