Library opening hours:

ils/339.htm
Pass your ISES
assignment.
As you will hopefully
have seen, I have been
running some sessions
for students to come
along on a Wednesday to
ask their questions and
learn more about the
library resources. These
sessions have had a
mixed response, but it’s
fair to say it hasn’t been
overwhelming. Anyone
who has any ideas about
how ILS can extend their
service out to students in
a more effective way
please do let me know.
In the meantime do keep
encouraging students to
get in touch with me, or
when they need help.
Sports Webpages
Don’t forget to keep
recommending the Sport
Webpages to your
students, and take a
glance yourself from
time to time as they are
constantly being
updated:

Do let me know if you
would like me to add
anything onto these for
you.
We’ve had a very busy
beginning of term here in
the library. Here’s a few
aspects you should be
aware of.
Harvard Referencing
There’s been a terrific
response from staff
regarding the new edition
of the referencing guide.
Hopefully you’re all finding
the guide useful, and feel
that the style is easy to
follow. Don’t forget if you
need support to get in
touch with me, and do
encourage students to
come and see ILS as well if
they have questions.

Print and Copy
Well...printing was free for
students at the beginning
of term, and I do think a
few students managed to
print off a couple of trees.
Printing and copy for
students is now managed
through their online
account, which they can
top-up using machines in
the library, or even their
cashcards online.
YouTube
Our collection of videos
online designed to support
students using the library
resources has been
growing and growing.
There are loads of helpful
videos on there, so you
might like to have a look
yourself, and point
students in that direction:

Peirson Opening Hours
The Peirson building has
expanded its service for
students in two important
ways. First, 24 hour access
has been reinstated. This
allows students access to
the various study zones, to
computers, to print and
copy, and to that all
important coffee machine.
This does not allow them
access to the print
collection, or to borrow or
return items. Access out of
staffed hours is via
swipecard students can
collect from main
reception in Edward Elgar.
However, our staffed
service has also improved,
as the library is now
staffed 9:00-21:00 on a
Sunday (whereas
previously it was from
13:00). Please encourage
students to make use of
these new hours as we
would like some

Our exciting new discovery tool
has arrived! Summon is designed
to provide a single search across
97% of our library resources,
enabling you to search more
thoroughly and effectively all the
resources that we have to offer.
For students it means much easier
access to articles from reading
lists, and a wider variety of
sources to draw from, although
users will have to think carefully
about how to refine down their
searches because there’s just so
much out there to discover!
Use the quick guide in this
newsletter to get you started.
Guides on using Summon will soon
be available from ILS, along with a
Youtube video tutorial, and of
course you can always invite a
librarian into your module to
explain how it all works. Please
get in touch with ILS by emailing
[email protected] if you
need more support, and
encourage your students to do the
same. Happy searching!
Summon!
Page 2 ISES Staff Library News
Never fear—Summon isn’t
designed to replace any of
our existing resources, but it
is a powerful new tool for
navigating them. But what do
we actually have? Here’s a
reminder:
Our new library catalogue
has records for our print
books, for our e-books
(which are held on the
database ‘MyiLibrary’), and to
the journal titles we hold in
the library.
Want to find a particular
journal, where it’s held online
and which issues/volumes we
subscribe to? Our trusty A-Z
Journals list will remain
available to you. Just pop in
the journal title so find out if
and where it’s available to
you.
Our E-Resources list (it used
to be called PERI for those
who may have known it by
that name) lists all the
databases we subscribe to—
there are over 100!
It’s subdivided by subject, so
don’t just look under the
sport subheading—there
might be things in
‘education’ or ‘psychology’
that are worth a look as well.
Summon itself will direct
users back towards these
databases if a particular
subject appears to be
coming up, so do keep
encouraging students to
learn about these resources
and use the native interfaces.
“Don’t forget
our existing
resources are
still there
for you”

You can refine
your search
results by full text
items only,
publication type,
date and other
options
TIP: If you hover over the
title of an item it will bring
up a preview including the
abstract where available
You can also refine your search by Publication Date. Hover over each
vertical bar to see
how many relevant
items were
published in that
year.
You can refine your search by Content Type. Click on the boxes
to select specific
content types,
such as Journal
Article, Book/
e-book, Book
Review etc.
Your saved items will be cleared when you leave your Summon session. You can format, export, email, or print your saved items at any time. Results can be formatted in several ways, including Harvard (although this will need tweaking to match the UW Harvard style). You can export to RefWorks, the bibliographic software tool.
Click on these icons to see a preview or save an item to a folder. Note that this is a temporary folder.
Many results will be journal
articles available in full text
online
Remember to select ‘keep search refinements’ if you want
to keep your refinements but change your search terms Re-order results to

date order

now”
Oasis anymore, just drop

E-books
Our e-books are still
being supplied by Coutts
using the MyiLibrary
platform. There are a few
points worth knowing
about e-books access:
Books published by
Pearson have recently
changed to a more
limited user licence—if
you see an error
message “flow control
warning” please email
me to let me know as
we may need to
upgrade the licence for
that title.
Please don’t flick
through pages too
Digitisation
The digitisation service is
now being enthusiastically
by a number of ISES staff,
which is enabling staff to
post direct links to legal
PDF copies of articles into
blackboard. If you need
any support using this
service do get in touch.
Book Supplier
We have now changed our
book supplier from Coutts
to Dawsons. The
beginning of term was
given over to ironing out
the kinks in the ordering
service, so apologies if
you’ve ordered books and
they are a little later than
you anticipated. If you do
want to order any titles
you don’t need to use
