Positive
Meetings and interaction with food professionals from Europe and the rest of the world.
Meeting colleagues from other African countries.
The main goal of the ISEKI_Mundus – Tuning World Food Studies – teaching, learning, & teaching materials.
This certainly contributes to exchange of students and staff – so important with the globalisation.
Creation of a Virtual Working Environment for experts – encourages collaborative research.
Creation of a student platform helps and guides students for mobility.
Cristina L.M. Silva Brussels, 4 – 5th December 2008 Slide 58
Challenges
Language differences. More documents should be translated.
Bridging gaps in higher education institutions between Europe and Africa
cannot be overlooked.
There is need for more dissemination of European initiatives (like ISEKI_Mundus).
Work on language issues for student mobility – to avoid “fear and doubts”.

SituationFact:
Cameroon, like other countries in Africa is facing developmental problems of varying shades and degrees;
Fact:
Appropriate planning, development and proper implementation of innovations in curricula and research within Higher Education system has the potential of contributing very significantly to resolution of these problemls has a possibility to overcome these difficulties
Cristina L.M. Silva Brussels, 4 – 5th December 2008 Slide 61
TIMING: The starting and the participation in the thematic network ISEKI_Mundus, was just right : For
- On the eve of the launching of the ISEKI Mundus project;
- 8 years after the signing of the Bologna declaration;
- 2 years after the signing of the Libreville declaration by the Heads of States of the Central African Region to reform the HE system in coherence with the Bologna declaration and in the footsteps of European Experience;
- the progressive introduction of the BMD system into the Higher Education programme in 2007/2008 academic year was singned
into law in Cameroon.
Cristina L.M. Silva Brussels, 4 – 5th December 2008 Slide 62
POSITIVE EXPERIENCES:
The possibility to meet other colleagues, work in groups, analyse and exchange of experiences and views from European partners was and has beeen most inspiring and rewarding
The project gave better insight and understanding of the issues involved with the Bologna process in Cameroon
Establish new collaborative links with several colleagues from different countries
Cristina L.M. Silva Brussels, 4 – 5th December 2008 Slide 63
Challenges
1. Proper introduction and running of the BMD system in food studies in Africa;
2. Financing of staff and student physical mobility in food studies;
3. Increased opportunities for post graduate food research through the increased financing of collaborative research; Twin degree /Certification programmes;
4. Virtual Mobility (Access to literature, journals, library and virtual teaching materials through the net); Poor Internet Connection;
5. Fine tuning of curricula;
6. Embedding Quality Assurance process into the Higher Education system.

Situation
In Republic of Congo – many public Universities spread over the country -
decentralization since 90s.
This “is to make university teachers move towards students”
University of Bukavu received the impacts of repeated wars in the eastern part
of DRC since 1996 – two years after its kick-off. This affected its functioning
and also the initially planned mobility of teachers.
Major obstacles are financial. Although severa international organisms have
been collaborating
Students have been having the opportunity for mobility in the Africa
continent, but the challenges are related to differences at universities
curricula,
Cristina L.M. Silva Brussels, 4 – 5th December 2008 Slide 66
Challenges
To improve student mbility in the field of food studies it is necessary:
- EU to support
- reform the DRC educational study system and line it up with the Bologna
process.
Support from the EU in mobility
- missin financing
- laboratory and didactic equipment transfer from DRC, African & European
Universities
