REGULAR ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY - I

Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter organized a special lecture

on ‘Biomedical application of Nanofirbils’ held on 03.07.2015 at Kongunadu Arts and

Science College between 2.00 and 3.30 PM. Dr. N. Dharmaraj, Professor of Chemistry,

Bharathiar University is the resource person. Smt. C.A. Vasuki, Convener of Coimbatore

Chapter, Indian Science Congress Association presided over the function. About 150

members have participated in the programme.

ACTIVITY - II

Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter organized an one day

seminar on ‘Traditional Knowledge, a Boon for Nation Building’ held on 26.08.2015 in

Kongunadu Arts and Science College premises. Eminent Scientists/Professors delivered

lectures in various topics as detailed below:

ACTIVITY - III

Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter organized a special lecture

on ‘Aeroponics – Soilless Cultivation’ held on 15.09.2015 at Kongunadu Arts and Science

College. Dr. C.V. Nagendhiran, Director, Irin Green India Pvt. Ltd., Coimbatore was the

resource person. Dr. T. Muraleeswari, Principal, Kongunadu Arts and Science College

presided over the function. About 100 members have participated in the programme.

ACTIVITY - IV

Celebration of Birth Anniversary of

Hon’ble Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

The Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter celebrated the birth

anniversary of our former president Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam by conducting tree plantation

programme in Kongunadu Arts and Science College premises, Coimbatore on 15.10.2015.

The convener of the chapter Smt. C.A. Vasuki along with Treasurer of Coimbatore Chapter

and Principal and students of the college took part in the programme. Seventy five Tree

saplings of Jasmine were planted in the campus. Smt. C.A. Vasuki explained about the

importance of green cover for ameliorating the effect of global warming and emphasized the

role of youth in environmental protection and hence the ecological security for living beings.

ACTIVITY – V

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS

Programme to know the recent trends in biological sciences with particular reference

to application of scientific principles for technology development was organized and

conducted in Kongunadu Arts and Science College for school students on 28.12.2015. Thirty

six students from RJ Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Saravanampatti, Coimbatore

participated the programme. Tissue culture technology for endangered plants, microbial

cultures for human welfare and analysis of medicinal plants were explained and demonstrated

in the Botany Department.

The students acquire knowledge on basic biological sciences and their application in

the production of biogoods.

ACTIVITY – VI

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION

Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter in association with

Dr. M. Aruchami Research Foundation and Ecoclub of Kongunadu Arts and Science College,

Coimbatore organized a seminar on ‘Scientific Approaches in Judicious Management of

Natural Resources’ on 26.02.2016 in Kongunadu Arts and Science College.

Dr. T. Muraleeswari, Principal, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore

welcomed the gathering and Smt. C.A. Vasuki, Convener, Coimbatore Chapter, Indian

Science Congress Association and Secretary and Director, Kongunadu Arts and Science

College presided the function. Dr. K. Logankumar, Dean, Academic, and R&D, Associate

Professor of Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore & Treasurer, ISCA

Coimbatore Chapter proposed vote of thanks. Dr. M.P. Ramanujam, Member, Puducherry

State Council for Higher Education, Puducherry has delivered a lecture on “Sustainable

Utilization of Herbs for Human Health”. He emphasized the need of cultivation of most

needed medicinal plants in India, thus to meet the demand and to conserve the wilds. He also

pointed out the importance of scientific validation of our traditional medicinal plants and

patenting the findings. Dr. B. Chandar Sekar, Assistant Professor of Physics, Kongunadu

Arts and Science College delivered lecture on “Solar the Ultimate Natural Renewable Energy

Source”. In this lecture, the solar energy potential available in India in different parts has

been explained well. The cost-effective methods of solar energy harvesting systems for house

hold units, agricultural and industrial sectors were described. Dr. S. Paulsamy, Associate

Professor of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College delivered lecture on “Rainwater

Harvesting and Waste Management”. The available surface water and ground water and

water cycle at global and regional levels were described. The possible ways of harvesting rain

water according to rainfall have clearly explained.

Over 550 students, research scholars and local public have participated in this

programme and get benefit. They were provided with seminar kits (souvenir, file and pen),

refreshment and working lunch for the day of their participation.

One day seminar on ‘Application of Science and Technology

for National Development’ was conducted in three different rural

Students of higher classes in all the three schools actively participated in

the seminars. The lectures were very useful and the students clarified their

doubts in basic and applied sciences and technology. The young minds get

refreshed through this lectures and they gained knowledge and information

about the role of science and technology in our national development. They

were motivated effectively to study and do research in future in the applied

areas of science and technology. Participation certificates and seminar kits were

provided to all students of all schools. The summary of the lectures of the

resource person are provided separately as booklets.

ii) Exhibition on ‘Indian Traditional Knowledge’ on 28.10.2015

Exhibition was conducted in Kongunadu Arts and Science College on the

above mentioned theme. Dr. T. Muraleeswari, Principal, Kongunadu Arts and

Science College welcomed the gathering. Smt. C.A. Vasuki, Convener of Coimbatore

Chapter, ISCA and Secretary, Kongunadu Arts and Science College presided the

function. Dr. Rajeev K. Srivastava, I.F.S., Additional Principal Chief Conservator of

Forests, and Director, Tamil Nadu Forest Academy, Coimbatore inaugurated the

exhibition. Students from 20 schools and 10 colleges in the district participated in the

exhibition that saw 146 exhibits on climate, soil, rain water harvesting, medicinal

plants, domestic animals, seed storage, man-animal conflict, healthcare and

biodiversity conservation. Photographs of 120 most important medicinal plants used

by various tribal communities too were on display. Appreciation of the participant’s

work in order to encourage them prizes were awarded. At school level, S. Sabarishan

and R. Sivaramakrishnan of Thailaxmi Matriculation School won the first prize for

their exhibit on ‘Traditional knowledge on flood control’. S. Shreyas and S.D.

Madhumitha of Vidya Vikasini Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the

second prize for their exhibit on ‘Practices in sea water purification’. S. Barani

Viknesh and J. Hari Krishnan of the same school won the third prize for their exhibit

on ‘Bioplastic out of decayed food waste’. At College level, V. Ravichandran,

Research Scholar in Botany, The Madura College, Madurai won the first prize for his

exhibit on ‘Traditional medicinal plants’. S. Rimshi and M.P. Deepthi, II M.Sc.,

Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College won the second prize for their exhibit

on ‘Undistrubing the nature for sustainable agriculture in India’. G. Yamuna and P.

Tamil Selvi, III B.Sc., Chemistry, Kongunadu Arts and Science College won the

second prize for their exhibit on ‘Ayurvedic Doshas for healthy life’. Consolation

prizes were given separately for the participants of schools and colleges. Participation

certificate was given to all participants.

Refreshments and working lunch were provided for the participants of school

programmes and exhibition.

iii) Adopting a village to make it conscious of hygiene, sanitary habits and

toilet use

Indian Science Congress Association, Coimbatore Chapter adopted the

village, Sree Dhanalakshmipuram, Coimbatore District under the special

programme supported by ISCA head quarter, Calcutta for the year 2015-2016.

On 23.09.2015, the Coimbatore Chapter convener, Smt. C.A. Vasuki

inaugurated the activities like toilet construction, distribution of bins to all the

38 houses of the adopted village to collect nonbiodegradable and biodegradable

domestic wastes and maintenance work in sewage canals. Dr. S. Paulsamy,

Associate Professor of Botany, Kongunadu Arts and Science College,

Coimbatore and Dr. M. Lekeshmanaswamy, NSS Programme Officer and

Associate Professor in Zoology of KASC have explained the importance of

domestic waste management and using toilet in the household areas for

environmental protection and hygienic life. Dr. K. Logankumar, Treasurer of

Coimbatore Chapter, ISCA and Associate Professor of Zoology of KASC was

also present and explained the importance of tree plantation.
