ABOUT OUR SCHOOL… The International School of Boston was founded in 1962. ISB provides a rigorous world class bilingual education and multi‐cultural environment, where our students can fully develop their critical thinking skills to become accom‐plished world citizens. We are a Pre‐K to 12th grade school incorporating the best of the French and International education systems offering the French and International Baccalaureate as well as the American High School di‐ploma.
The International School of Boston is a non‐profit, international school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just minutes away from Harvard Square and Boston. To this day, the school remains a worldly, intellectual and unique interna‐tional learning place.
Amongst its 540+ students are French and American families, as well as families from all over the world representing 40+ countries.
Why DONATE? Why SPONSOR? Our Gala, our online and live auction are unique opportunities for corporations, families, individuals and other friends of ISB to support our school while gaining visibility within the ISB community. All items and sponsorships will be featured online and will be visible via www.BiddingForGood.com (potential to reach to 200,000+ registered us‐ers/consumers!)
Please find donation and sponsorship agreement in attachment. All donations are tax deductible to fullest extent of law.
Thank you.
ANNOUNCING ISB GALA BENEFIT 2011! The highly anticipated 4 ISB Gala Benefit will take place on Friday, April 8, 2011. This year we would like to offer our students a 4th exceptional Annual Project: a media center/library and a student lounge!
Previous years’ Galas were attended by 200+ people and successfully raised funds to build a new playground (2008), a math lab (2009) and a science lab (2010), enriching the learning experience and well‐being of our students.
With the generosity of all, we invite you to take part in a special moment that makes a huge difference!

Spotlight on ISB IB Graduate CALUM BOWDEN, 2010
Where in the world is ISB Grad, Calum Bowden?
Thousands of miles from Cambridge, MA and St. Andrews College, where he will enroll in the fall of 2011, ISB graduate Calum Bowden (class of 2010) has engaged in a unique learning ex‐perience. As part of a gap year, Calum is working in Kenya for Jitegemee, Inc., a non‐profit, non‐governmental organization whose mission is to transform the lives of Kenyan street chil‐dren through education and skills training. Armed with abilities and attributes developed through his IB program, Calum is teaching computer skills to children who have never lived with electricity, fending for themselves on the streets without adult supervision and support, and sustaining themselves through odd jobs and sometimes prostitution or theft. Calum is putting into practice the IB Learner Profile attributes he developed through his coursework and CAS activities at ISB like Risk‐Taker, Communicator, Caring, and Principled. A donor to Jitegemee who recently visited Kenya remarked, " the kids love Calum and he seems to be making a real difference in their lives. It was amazing to see how the kids have picked up computer skills after only sitting down at a computer a few times." Jitegemee Board Chair Helena Halperin, Upper School faculty member, recommended Calum wholeheartedly after having taught him for two years in the IB program. "I, knowing his computer skills, video skills, academic competence, sophistication about the world, and ability to get along well with all sorts of people, strongly recommended him," stated Mrs. Halperin. She admits "there were some barriers to overcome. The rest of the board was a bit skeptical about having someone no older than some of our students, and who had never lived in the third world. I vouched for him. After all, since ISB is still a small school, we come to know our students quite well, so I could feel sure he could adapt. If I had not known him so well, I could not have done that." After his internship with Jitegemee, Calum will travel to South Africa and then return to the
U.S. before beginning his university studies in Great Britain this fall.
"Promoting humanistic values and global citizenship" and preparing students "for success and fulfillment in a global world..."
(ISB Mission and Philosophy) Developing "inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect..."

MANY THANKS TO OUR APPLES FAMILIES and NURSE HIGGINS!
It has been said that "the Apples Program is just about the only thing about which everyone at the school agrees!" This inspiring success is due, of course, to the generosity and enthusiasm of the families and staff who have voluntarily stepped up to the plate and signed up for one or more Apples Thursdays, some of whom are shown on the next page. Many of the students love to have their photos taken, so please ask the Appl‐odian (Madame de la Pomme) to show you this year's complete Apples Al‐bum. And, if you would like to sign up for one of the remaining Apples Thursdays this spring, it will be most appreciated by students, teachers, staff and parents alike.
MERCI MILLE FOIS !!!

s ISB HAS BEEN FENCING FOR 8 YEARS!
For the past 8 years, the ISB Fencing Club has been the back‐bone of the Athletics Program. The program starts with chil‐dren in the third grade and sup‐ports the improvement and growth of their fencing skills into high school and beyond.
This year the Fencing Club has taken another step in its devel‐opment with the introduction of the Varsity Fencing Team. Members of the team are selected by their coach, Rob Hupp, and parent volunteer Thierry Hubert, to take part in weekly individual training lessons and team practice. The skills that these athletes are honing dur‐ing these intense practices, along with weekly Saturday morning practices, are preparing them to represent ISB at area fencing competitions.
Throughout the fall, many of the Varsity fencers represented ISB at both regional and national competitions. On November 7th, Sam M., son of ISB teacher Dana Risley, and Larry Schmutz, friend of ISB Fencing and former ISB parent, com‐peted in the 15+ Mixed Foil Competition. This was Sam’s second competition and Larry’s first. At the Y12 Mixed Foil Competition, three fencers signed up to repre‐sent ISB. Two of these, Emma H. (7th), and Jonathan D., former ISB student, contended for the second time in their fencing careers, while the third, Mark T. (7th), had a strong showing at his first ever fencing competition. Devin B. (6th), one of the younger members of the Varsity Fencing Team, participated in the Y12 Mixed Sabre. This was Devin’s second competition.
The two‐day U20 Jr. Olympic Qualifiers competition took place on December 11th and 12th. Two fencers suited up to represent the International School of Boston. Maggie G., ISB alumna, was involved in the Women’s Foil division for the first time. No stranger to competition, Erik H. (9th) donned his whites and com‐peted in the Men’s Epee. This was Erik’s second competition.

ISB FENCING (cont.) AND ISB BASKETBALL!
At both the local and national levels, the members of the ISB Fencing Club are beginning to be recognized as a force to be reckoned with. In the next few months, these fencers will be working hard to prepare for their next competi‐tion. It will be exciting to watch this program grow, as the younger fencers move up from within and fence under the ISB banner.

THANK YOU AGAIN TO ALL THE WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE!

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENRICHMENT Yale’s A Cappella & More
ISB Middle School students have en‐
joyed two wonderful enrichment
programs this winter. On Thursday,
December 16th, the New Repertory
Theater returned to ISB and put on a
performance of "A Christmas Carol"
by Charles Dickens. After the per‐
formance, students were able to ask
questions of the actors and get an
inside glimpse into a theater per‐
formance. On January 14th, the stu‐
dents were again treated to a special
performance at ISB: Yale’s a cappella group, "Shades," who mesmerized the students with a
variety of songs based on the African‐American musical tradition. Their playlist included R&B,
gospel, jazz, pop, and an energetic rendition of “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mer‐
maid. Shades' repertoire is rooted in music of the African Diaspora and includes arrange‐
ments of Caribbean, Gospel, and African music. To get a taste of what our students enjoyed,
check out their website http://www.yale.edu/shades/.
Many thanks, as always, to the PTO for providing these special opportunities for our students.
ISB also received an anonymous external donation from a sponsor who supports Shades and
believes in bringing multi‐cultural musical programs to children.

Our new ISB Robotics Team, the Lego
Sapiens, had a successful first tournament on
Saturday, December 4th. The team, comprised
of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, came in 22nd out of
48 teams. Considering that it was their first
tournament, this was quite an exceptional
performance. The students, their parents and
coaches were very excited about the experi‐
ence and are motivated to continue. New
team members from 5th and 6th grades are be‐
ing added, and the team is already preparing
for next year's competition.
Go Lego Sapiens!

MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE...
Inspired by several students asking to start community service clubs and help Lower School students after school...
the Middle School now has a Community Service program!
Students can volunteer their time either within the ISB community or outside the ISB commu‐nity to earn community service points. Students so far have volunteered at the Holiday Ba‐zaar to both help set up and sell crafts to raise money for the Student Council's fund‐raiser. And now, there are 10 Middle School students who are volunteering every week after school to help Lower School students in the homework, art and cooking clubs.
Harvard Medical School Psychiatrist and Researcher
Speaks to Middle School Psychology Exploration Project!
Dr. Harrison G. Pope Jr., MD psychiatrist and researcher at Harvard Medical
School and McLean Hospital in Belmont, came to guest lecture for the Psychology Student Exploration Project class this past November. Dr. Pope is a widely published researcher on psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience, and is the author of more than 300 peer‐reviewed scientific papers. While Dr. Pope regularly lectures at the graduate level, this was his first time in a middle school classroom. Prior to his visit, students developed an experiment to test the effect of language ac‐cent (French versus American) and packaging (beautiful versus plain) of a perfume bottle on fragrance sample‐takers in Harvard Square. Our students hypothesized that sample‐takers would be influenced to not only take more samples from French‐accented students and attractive bottle holders, but would also rate the perfume more highly on a scale of one to 10. As a class, we sifted through the numbers with Dr. Pope, and he showed us that our ex‐periment had not in fact produced any numbers that supported our hypothesis, but that we had found something much more interesting ‐‐ a powerful example of the "experimenter effect" ‐‐ that the student presenting the bottle, regardless of his or her accent or bottle type, could sway the number of "customers" who took a sample and sub‐sequent rating of the perfume by being more or less excited about the product.

INTERNATIONAL DINNERS IN UPPER SCHOOL
In early January, the 9th grade IP cooked up a feast, with dishes representing the diversity of the cultures and backgrounds of the six members of the class. The idea to have an evening meal together with each student bringing a special food came about during Advisory one day, as students discussed the definition of internation‐alism and their own connections to a wide range of cultures: Ethiopian, Lebanese, Hungarian, Korean, Armenian and Persian. The topic of food flowed easily – and at 2:30 pm – quite naturally from introductions they made about their cultural identi‐ties. Because three of the six students are new to ISB this year, the class decided that a special 9th IP dinner would be a great way to enhance their unity and identity in the IP program. Reda F.’s parents hosted the dinner and were thrilled to keep the leftovers!
Internationalism abounded again, as the 9th IP and 9th French/Bilingual students enjoyed another get‐together at the home of Bin C. (9th), whose sisters prepared a South Ko‐rean feast.
