Slovenians are descendants of Alpine Slavs who settled the area between the Alps
and the Adriatic Sea in the late 6th century. They founded their own country called
Carantania. In the 9th century they lost their independence and came under the
Franks. For centuries most of the territory was under Habsburg rule. In 1918 the
Slovenians joined Yugoslavia. Between 1945 and 1990, Slovenia was under
Yugoslav Communist regime. The country gained its independence from Yugoslavia
in June 1991. Today it is a modern state and a member of the European Union and
NATO.

Ljubljana is the capital and the biggest city of Slovenia. Its
population is about 283,000. The Ljubljana dragon is the
symbol of the city. In Roman times the city was called Emona and its remains can still
be seen throughout the city. The old city centre with the medieval castle on the hilltop
is one of the most notable landmarks. There are beautiful bridges across the
Ljubljanica river. The biggest park called Tivoli City Park is located near the city
centre.
