A blessed Christmas and new year to all. I hope that your Christmas has been one full of joy, peace, and God’s grace. This coming year, I hope to be a blessed one for our parish. There is much we have to do in order to grow in God’s love. As I mentioned in a previous bulletin, we are planning a parish retreat in March. It will take place on a Friday evening and Saturday and Sun-day on one of the weekends in March. The out-side group that is putting on the retreat is trying to find which weekend in March they could put on the retreat. I should know in the coming 2 weeks when the retreat will be. Please keep these weekends as open as possible. I have seen and heard from many of you about how you want to grow in faith in Jesus. This par-ish based retreat is meant to help us focus on the heart of the Gospel message. It is also meant to help us form small faith communities in which we help one another to grow in faith. I believe that this is one of the ways in which we can begin to grow our parish. It will help us to form a structure by which we can grow and we can invite others to grow in the faith.
I look forward to journeying with you on this re-treat….In Christ our Hope, Fr. Eric Bennett Grand Annual UpdateGrand Annual UpdateGrand Annual UpdateGrand Annual Update

What about the magi? It is popularly held that there were three. What is commonly said of their names?: • Gaspar (or Caspar), who has brown hair and
a brown beard (or no beard!) and wears a green cloak and a gold crown with green jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba. Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus.
• Melchior, who has long white hair and a white beard and wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold brought to Jesus.
• Balthazar, who has black skin and a black beard (or no beard!) and wears a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt. Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus.
The three gifts that tradition holds that they brought: • Gold: is associated with Kings and Chris-
tians believe that Jesus is the King of Kings. • Frankincense: is sometimes used in worship
in Churches and showed that people child worship Jesus.
• Myrrh: is a perfume that is put on dead bod-ies to make them smell nice and showed that Jesus would suffer and die.
Where are they buried? - Cologne Cathedral contains the reliquary of the Three Magi where it is held that there remains
A reflection on the Epiphany by Dr. Scott Hahn: An "epiphany" is an appearance. In today's readings, with their rising stars, splendorous lights and myster-ies revealed, the face of the child born on Christmas day appears. Herod, in today's Gospel, asks the chief priests and scribes where the Messiah is to be born. The answer Matthew puts on their lips says much more, combin-ing two strands of Old Testament promise - one re-vealing the Messiah to be from the line of David (see 2 Samuel 2:5), the other predicting "a ruler of Israel" who will "shepherd his flock" and whose "greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth" (see Micah 5:1-3). Those promises of Israel's king ruling the nations re-sound also in today's Psalm. The psalm celebrates David's son, Solomon. His kingdom, we sing, will stretch "to the ends of the earth," and the world's kings will pay Him homage. That's the scene too in today's First Reading, as nations stream from the East, bearing "gold and frankincense" for Israel's king. The Magi's pilgrimage in today's Gospel marks the fulfillment of God's promises. The Magi, probably Persian astrologers, are following the star that Ba-laam predicted would rise along with the ruler's staff over the house of Jacob (see Numbers 24:17). Laden with gold and spices, their journey evokes those made to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba and the "kings of the earth" (see 1 Kings 10:2,25; 2 Chronicles 9:24). Interestingly, the only other places where frankincense and myrrh are mentioned to-gether are in songs about Solomon (see Song of Songs 3:6, 4:6,14). One greater than Solomon is here (see Luke 11:31). He has come to reveal that all peoples are "co-heirs" of the royal family of Israel, as today's Epistle teaches. His manifestation forces us to choose: Will we follow the signs that lead to Him as the wise Magi did? Or will we be like those priests and the scribes who let God's words of promise become dead letters on an ancient page?

“If the Magi had come in search of an earthly King, they would have been disconcerted at finding that they had taken the trouble to come such a long way for nothing. Consequently they would have neither adored nor offered gifts. But since they sought a heavenly King, yet, content with the testimony of the star alone, they adored: for they saw a man, and they acknowledged a God.” (St. John Chrysostom,)
Opportunities for Spiritual Renewal “For I satisfy the weary ones and refresh everyone who languishes.” Jeremiah 31:25 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31)

Entrance: We Three Kings of Orient Are We Three Kings of Orient Are We Three Kings of Orient Are We Three Kings of Orient Are 223 We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts, we traverse afar; Field and fountain, moor and moun-tain, Following yonder star. Refrain: O, Star of Wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to the perfect light! Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown him again; King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign. (R)
Offertory As With Gladness As With Gladness As With Gladness As With Gladness (206)
As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold; As with joy they hailed its light’ leading onward, beaming bright; So most gracious Lord, may we evermore your splendor see. As with joyful steps they sped to that lowly manger bed, there to bend the knee before Christ whom heav’n and earth adore, So may we with hurried pace run to seek your throne of grace As they offered gifts most rare at that manger rude and bare; So may we this holy day Drawn to you without delay, All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to you, our heaven’ly King Christ Redeemer with us stay, help us live your holy way; And, when earthly things are past, Bring our ransomed souls at last Where they need no star to guide, Where no clouds your glory hide
Communion The First Nowell The First Nowell The First Nowell The First Nowell (320) The first Nowell the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay, In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep R: Nowell, Nowell, Nowel, Nowell Born is the King of Israel They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night (R)
And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far To seek a King was their intent And to follow the star where e’er it went (R) This star drew near to the northwest Over Bethlehem it came to rest And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay (R) Then entered in those wise men three Fell reverently upon their knee And offered there in His presence Their gold and myrrh and frankincense (R)
Closing Hail to the Lord’s Anointed (335)Hail to the Lord’s Anointed (335)Hail to the Lord’s Anointed (335)Hail to the Lord’s Anointed (335) Hail to the Lord’s Anointed Great David’s greater Son! Hail in the time appointed, God’s reign on earth begun! Christ comes to break op-pression, To set captive free; To take away trans-gression And rule in equity Christ comes with tender healing for those who suffer wrong, To help the poor and pleading, And bid the weak be strong; To give them songs, not sighing, Their darkness turn to light, Whose souls condemned and dying, Are precious in His sight
