Is it just me, or is it a bit stale in here?— Your Brain
Open your mind and let some fresh air in.
Whether it’s sculpture, Flash animation,
physics of light and color or a seminar on
Hollywood’s western heroes, our classes will
help you learn something new and crack the
windows for the gray matter.

“When you reach for the stars you may not quite get one, but you won’t come up with a handful of mud either.”
— Leo Burnett
Congratulations to everyone who entered the 2012 ADDY Awards! This annual celebration of creative talent is for everyone who successfully transformed a rough idea into a piece of advertising genius. This annual showcase of our very best is inspiring and reassuring that indeed, a great deal of talented people make up the members of the Advertising Club of Toledo. Even if you don’t walk away with some gold, you should be proud that your work exemplifies creativity and a little bit of genius, and that’s no handful of mud.
Special congratulations go to the 2012 Silver Medal Award Winner, Jerry Brown. From his garage-based business to nationally known industry leader, Jerry exemplifies the spirit of entrepreneurship and talent, mixed with some generosity and a little fun. Good job, Jer Bear.
Of course, we could not make this happen without our sponsors and in-kind donors. You can find a list of these AdClub members in this program. Please remember to support their businesses in appreciation of everything they do to contribute to AdClub success. And congratulations to Chairman and Past President Michael Seay, and the entire ADDY committee for another successful evening.
If you’re not a member of the Advertising Club of Toledo, consider the benefits of joining this 103-year-old organization. Together, our nearly 200 members work together to promote ethical and effective marketing and advertising in our community, while fostering a sense of fellowship among members. All while we have a good time! You can get membership information on our website (www.adclubtoledo.org) or by contacting the office at 419-866-4199.
Thank you all for coming tonight and supporting the Club. I hope you enjoyed the evening and I’ll see you at the next luncheon!
Kathy Jex
Advertising Club of Toledo President, 2011-2012
2012 Silver Medal Award WinnerJERRY BROWN Jerry Brown founded BusinessVoice as an On Hold Marketing (OHM) agency in 1989. At the time, there were relatively few companies that provided OHM, let alone specialized in the service, but Jerry had the foresight to see that On Hold Marketing could
become an important tool for all types of businesses. Today, there are several hundred OHM providers in the United States alone.
As President of BusinessVoice, Jerry oversees the strategic direction of the agency. He is also a National Account Executive and an active member of the marketing team.
Over the last 23 years, Jerry’s vision has led to the development of many other services, from TeleGreeting and the BusinessVoice News Network, to LobbyVision In-Store Video, Point-Of-Purchase Audio, and Aroma Marketing. Through WebArt, its in-house web company, BusinessVoice also provides Website Design and Development, Website Marketing and Email Marketing.
Today, BusinessVoice delivers services that impact its clients at three “points of entry” – their telephone, website and front door. By re-positioning the agency as a provider of “Point-Of-Entry Marketing” solutions, Jerry Brown has further distinguished BusinessVoice in the minds of prospective clients. The BusinessVoice team now helps clients build customer share on the phone, on-site and online at thousands of locations across the country.
Jerry is a founding member of the On Hold Messaging Association, an international trade organization that promotes the benefits of OHM and works to maintain the high professional standards of its more than 60 member companies. He has served as the association’s Chairman and as the head of the Marketing Committee.
Jerry also has been very active in the Advertising Club of Toledo. He has served as President, Vice President, ADDY Chairman and Auction Chairman.
Under Jerry’s leadership, BusinessVoice has been recognized more than 100 times by local, regional and national award competitions for creative and marketing excellence. These honors include Best of Show at the 2009 5th District ADDYs, two local Best of Show ADDY awards, three Judge’s
3 2012 ADDY AWARDS
Choice ADDYs, and three 5th District ADDYs, plus several category ADDYs and certificates.
In addition to supporting Ad Club programs that benefit the community, Jerry has taken an active role in helping others. For many years, Jerry and BusinessVoice donated time, money, food and other supplies to the Huntington Center in Sylvania, Ohio. The center was also the beneficiary of several fundraising efforts by BusinessVoice employees.
For several years, Jerry has worked on behalf of Toledo’s Old Newsboys, raising money for their programs that support needy children. He recruits BusinessVoice employees and others to volunteer their time during the Newsboys’ annual paper sale fundraiser.
Jerry also spent many seasons as a volunteer football coach, working with young athletes to impart his skills and experience.
When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, Jerry came to the rescue of Profit On Hold, a competitor and fellow member of the On Hold Messaging Association. Jerry donated digital OHM systems and the production / studio services of BusinessVoice to help the company stay in business after the area’s devastating floods.
Jerry Brown is a multi-faceted man: a client-focused Account Executive; a committed leader; a visionary entrepreneur; an athlete and musician. But, perhaps most importantly, he is a loving, dedicated father to his two sons, a tremendous friend, and a warm, generous human being. He rejoices in everyday life and inspires those around him to excel in all that they do.
Who could hope for a more profound legacy?
Congratulations, Jerry.

“I was completely unprepared for how clever and charming it would be. The storyline was fun and intriguing. The animation was attention-getting and unique. The product message was clear and not forced. Bravo. Truly a great example of great creative making products relevant and memorable. You know it’s good when you don’t even notice how long it is...”

“I chose the TARTA Gas Guzzling campaign largely because it was actually a campaign. And it had a real concept. Too often design or technology is used as a substitute for a concept but that doesn’t work. This campaign had a real concept. And as a bonus, that concept was 100% easy to understand with just a glance. If you saw one of those gas guzzling faces and the TARTA logo, you got the entire message in a half a second. That’s what a concept is supposed to do. It’s a great campaign.”
About Matt: Matt Harlow has spent his entire professional life helping companies project the best possible brands to their prospects and live up to their brands for their customers. He’s been involved in the American Advertising Federation since college and has served at the local, district and national levels in the organization as a professional. “There were a number of truly exceptional entries in the 2012 Toledo ADDYs. This :60 commercial for ProMedica is the piece that resonated with me the most. Powerful copywriting, without the use of a voiceover. Beautiful cinematography. Truly believable scenarios. National quality casting. And, dramatically powerful music. Together, the pieces fit perfectly, and the spot actually got me a little choked up. Does this make me any less of a man? Probably. But to me, this spot rose to the top.”
About Steve: Steve Schaeffer, Creative Director at Creative Dimensions in Cincinnati, has crafted award-winning work for some of the most iconic brands in Greater Cincinnati over the past 20 plus years. He currently oversees the creative for the largest tire retailer in the world, TBC Brands based in Palm Beach, Florida. Outside of advertising, his passions include antiques, restoring his 170-year-old Victorian home and horseracing. Oh, and his wife and kids of course.

“The BGSU Stroh Center fundraising video was fantastic for a lot of reasons. First, because it was VERY brave. Just taking that concept to the client, took more nerve than a lot of shops could ever possibly muster. Once the concept was approved, they could have fallen on their face in any one of a thousand places during the production. What if the donors wouldn’t play ball or the rapper wasn’t quite good enough. But none of that happened, and the end result was fantastic, clever, relevant and funny. And while I certainly would have been proud to have produced that video at our shop, I would have been equally proud to have been creative enough to conceive of it in the first place and brave enough to take it to the client. All around, it was a piece of great work.”Matt Harlow
“Bold. On all fronts. From someone talking the older millionaires into gym shorts and spinning balls. From brilliant/funny writing of the song. From the slick/seamless production to the hooky, ‘Where my Falcons at?’ An idea that could have gone wrong at so many points, refused to bend and delivered brilliance. Might be, ‘Where my CLIO’s at?’”Mark Canavan
“Having worked on the University of Cincinnati Athletics account for a number of years, this video struck a personal cord with me. It was definitely a ‘Boy, I wish I had done something like that’ moment. Very unexpected and produced exceptionally well. The video could have been a train wreck if not produced well, and it was done perfectly.”Steve Schaeffer
