Hi Flyers -

With the recent spell of decent Scottish Summer weather, which doesn't need the code-breakers of Bletchley Park to decipher the meaning of Scottish

Summer ( any day that doesn't have torrential rain, gale force winds or sleet / snow ) which should give all us Flyers the Thumbs up to hire a Tayside aircraft

and enjoy the scenic Scottish Highlands and Islands.

The main aim of Tayside Flying club is to organise operational sorties ( that’s Fly-outs to you and me ) and allow its membership to participate whether pilot, student or a passenger wanting a feel for what a sortie is all about. There is no shortage of idea’s of where we should Fly to, or what to do once we get there. But what we do encourage is your participation. This will make Our flying club

the one that leads the way & promotes cohesion amongst our membership.

Tayside is open later in the evening.

So you can enjoy more sunset flying during the good

Summer weather

The Summer months are here, we will hopefully have the weather, we have the aircraft, all we need is the people to join in with the club activities &

have a good time?

What do i mean by club activities?

We have Summer BBQ’s. Airshows, evening flights, Talk nights, Ground school, monthly Fly-outs and for the more illustrious there’s scope for a fly-out to Ireland

or France !

If you feel tempted to become a Pilot as a career, then why not come along and see what’s required at the Pilot Degree Information session.

Or If you feel tempted to fly for leisure, then come on board, put your seat belt on, enjoy the flight and read on.....

Calling all Tayside Pilots - Time for Squadron Scramble.

If like me, you feel the need to fly further than around the local area, but don't

know where to fly to ? Or you don't have flying buddies to share the

experience ? Or your too shy to ask ?

Well fear not ! Tayside Flying Clubs Help is at hand.

We aim to arrange monthly fly-outs that require your participation.

We also aim to have mid-week Sunset fly-outs.

Whether your a Pilot or passenger, we hope to accommodate all.

If this floats your boat, then please get in touch with Drew, via the forums of

Taysideflyingclub.co.uk

I advertised on the forums if anyone was interested in purchasing Skydemon ?

I managed to get 13 interested people from Dundee / Fife and Perth to subscribe to Skydemon, which resulted in us All receiving a 30% reduction in the annual price ! A fantastic deal was had by all, and I’m glad to report that it went without a glitch & everyone is more than satisfied with this iPad software that helps with plotting a route / weather en route / Frequency of airfields and a moving map of your location at all times. ( a great back-up to using a Map)

If there is future demand, i can try and secure a similar deal next year.....

During the Summer we always arrange a visit to the Tower at Dundee and also a chance to use the Sim.

A turnout of 26 people enjoyed both activities on a warm sunny evening.

The Flying club would like to thank all the ATC people who took the time to show us what they do & how they do it.

We’d also like to thank Jim Watt of Tayside Aviation for giving us Free Sim time & buffet afterwards !

Not only did we get the chance to land at Malaga airport, but we also got the chance to eat Spanish Tapas

afterwards !

Appreciated !

When visiting airshows up and down the Uk I often wonder what it would be like to fly a Warbird ? The sight, sound & smell from any of these aircraft gives us a fleeting glimpse into the past, and to what it must have been like in the day. The chances of getting up close to a Warbird is pretty slim, as they are delicate in nature & who’d want a member of the public to damage their pride and joy ? With all of the above taken into contention, it makes it even more unbelievable when I heard that a genuine Korean War, American Army aircraft was coming to Scotland..... To Dundee .... To Tayside !!!!!!

Jim Watt of Tayside Aviation decided that he wanted a Warbird, and scoured the planet is search of a suitable aircraft. When one such aircraft became available for sale, and was only one of three airworthy ‘Bird Dogs’ in the Uk, then he couldn't resist !

The Bird dog is now based at Tayside aviation, she is an incredible sight to see & is fully equipped just as she would have been in the Korean war ! The full incredible story of how this remarkable iconic aircraft came into being, its history, and lots of photo’s, and where you can get a chance to see her in action will be revealed in the next issue of the Tayside Flyer !

What better way of celebrating 4th July than by having a BBQ !

The event proved to be so popular, that even the rain turned up... But only in the morning. By 1pm the sun shone, the people gathered, the marquee housed 100 Stars & Stripes flags, American swing music graced the airwaves ( as did a few budding dancers ), and not even 1 Redcoat in sight ! Tayside Flying Club

provided its membership with a multitude of tasty beef burgers, steak kebabs, pork kebabs, bbq chicken, coleslaw & salad. All washed down with chilled beer / cider or coke. Scotty G even invented the mammoth barbeque marshmallow, although I’ll allow the below photo to judge whether its edible ! Great Turnout & everyone agreed that the afternoon was a great success & we should have more !

Sometimes the Autumn season can provide some of the best flying weather before the winter months may hinder any planned Fly-outs?

If we can plan a feast of weekly fly-outs each weekend for the month of October, we can hopefully all have some good weather flying fun.

I would suggest Fly-outs to Wick, Oban, Carlisle and Inverness.

I’ll post dates in the Forums, feel free to come along & enjoy Ochtoberfest !

The planning for the annual Tayside Flying club Christmas night out is in its infancy stages. For those of you who have never been, it consists of Tayside flying club members, Tayside Instructors & commercial pilots from Loganair / Ryanair who get together for a meal, a chat about Pilotry, a few light refreshments - then a boogie at a local club ! Its a fantastic night out and the chance to show us your moves on the dance floor.

Provisional dates of Friday 11th or Saturday 12th

December have been set !

Full details will be posted in the next Flyer & Forum section of the website.

The Vulcan was once one of the proud fleet of aircraft called the V-Bombers

who were part of the United Kingdoms strategic nuclear strike force. This

also included the Valiant and the Victor. This particular aircraft started life in

the R af in 1960 and was eventually retired in 1992. Many people wanted her

back in an airworthy condition & so started the Vulcan to the Sky trust, who

depended on both lottery funding and public donations to help her devoted

team to spend all their time and effort to get her back into the sky !

In 2007 they achieved this goal & by the following year they had their Vulcan

displaying at airshows across the Uk at an operational cost of £2million per

year. I was fortunate to witness her flying at both Raf Leuchars and Raf

Waddington airshows & I’m sure you’ll agree that she is an immense sight and

sound if you managed to attend these shows?

Like all good things must come to an end, the decision to retire XH558 was

made for the end of the show season in 2015. This was based on her having a

flying expectancy of 250 hours, which have now been exceeded. The airframe

& engines are still in perfect working order but the 3 companies who the trust

depends on have ceased their continued support, which means that the CAA

regulations prohibit her from flying again.

Luckily for us, a Flying club member, Andrew Fortune attended XH558 last flight in Scotland on her ’Salute to the V-Force tour on Saturday 27th June 2015 over the skies at East Fortune airfield. Andrew has kindly offered to share his fantastic photo’s from the day....

The Beautiful Isle of Tiree

All club members are entitled & warmly welcomed to attend all Fly-outs !

The main theory behind the Fly-outs is the challenge to fly to different airfields, with the added bonus that if three pilots fly a leg each then this makes the trip more affordable for all attending ! We also welcome student pilots to attend as a passenger, we hope they can learn invaluable experience by viewing what happens outside of the circuit, RT & frequency changes & procedural applications at different airfields.

All in all its a great day out & a chance to meet fellow club members.

Fly-Outs are usually held once a month or more frequent in the Summer months.

They are always advertised in the Flyer, Dundee clubhouse Notice-board & a more detailed description of events are located in the Forums section of

Taysideflying-

club.co.uk

If you want to attend a Fly-out, please let me know by posting your intentions on the forums section of the above website. & state whether your a Pilot or passenger?

If you want to be ahead of the game, then book an aircraft from TA, then post on the Forums section that you are looking for a crew. There’s always a host of willing people that will take you up on your offer. Sometimes we have more people than available aircraft, so best to book an aircraft when you see an Fly-out advertised, especially in the summer months when demand is higher.

We always share costs of Landing fee’s / lunch etc. But the PIC always pays for the leg they have flown.

Hope to see you at one of the above Fly-outs !

The picturesque Isle of Tiree is located to the West of the Isle of Mull.

Surrounded by beautiful beaches and clear water it really is a idyllic place to visit by an aircraft.

Getting there involves 1 hour 45 minutes Flying time, & decent weather is really a must to get safely over the mountains east of Oban.

If conditions are right - then green for go.

If conditions are marginal, then lets leave this sortie for another time.

As per normal, If you want to attend then please let know via forums.

Hire an aircraft via the Tayside Ops desk, best to book early to avoid disappointment.

The annual Summer fly-in to Glenforsa on the Isle of Mull is an eagerly anticipated event for many flyers across the Uk.

Why? The scenery is wonderful on the Isle of Mull. The grass strip makes an interesting landing. There’s always a full compliment of aircraft from all over the Uk and Europe attend this event. There’s usually an informal show of aerobatics over the bay, and also the chance of a Warbird to be seen too !

The hotel is always a fantastic base, with great food and a hive of aviation stories from

the pilots in the bar ! Certainly gets my Vote to attend....

Gavin Ritchie, Alistair McCartney and Drew departed Dundee in a Warrior to attend. The weather was blue sky, light winds and generally a joy to fly to Mull. Gav made his memorable first Grass landing & parked up on the down slope facing the Bay. We had lunch and viewed a Yak Aerobatic display. Then the weather forecast was for rain, low cloud & high winds, so we beat a hasty retreat back to Dundee before the storm hit Mull. We’d like to thank the organisers for an excellent day in every way & aim to see you at next years Fly-in !

Once you’ve landed back at Dundee can you please make sure that the aircraft has enough fuel for the next flight? Some peeps are leaving the tanks on the low side, & this is causing the next customer to wait while the aircraft is being

re-fuelled.

Don’t be Cruel

Remember & Re-Fuel !

Points to remember

■ Enter the appropriate listening squawk for the area, with Mode C if you have it

■ Tune into the appropriate frequency and listen out, without transmitting

■ Change back to 7000, with Mode C, if you have it, when leaving the area or changing frequency

A listening squawk does NOT…

Clear you into controlled airspace

Mean that you are receiving any ATC service

If you need a service from ATC, contact either the appropriate

LARS frequency or London/Scottish Information as required

TFC Website - We current have 70 members signed up / Registered to the site. So to all of those who are too shy, come on in the waters lovely .....

Out of Hours Permits - Have been bought for Highlands and Islands & Argyll and Bute Airfields. This really opens up Scotland for Tayside Aircraft, so if you fancy travelling a bit further and experiencing some fantastic locations - then the skies the limit - enjoy !

Airside: There is now a Security requirement from the Airport Manager to have Photo I.D. authority to be airside. Tayside will issue each member an Airside I.D. Card with photo & lanyard. Remember the next time your at the club to get your photo taken at the Ops desk and Bernadette will add it to the I.D. Card which you’ must wear at all times.

Aircraft Folders - If you take an aircraft for a land away remember and take the appropriate Aircraft Folder with you. If your flying around the local area then put the Aircraft folder on the Top shelf before you leave - and then put it in the bottom shelf when you return. This way Operations will know whether your Aircraft is in the air or on the ground?

P a g e 2 5 The tayside flyer

We are encountering a situation where people are who are not authorised to are deferring aircraft defects. It is clearly stated in the operations manual of Tayside Aviation that: "all aircraft defects must be recorded on the daily technical log in the line under 'defect' as they arise, this automatically makes the aircraft unserviceable. All defects thus noted must be immediately referred to the Duty Engineer/Duty Instructor and only the Duty Engineer/Instructor can decide when a defect can be deferred." So, if you find a defect always let the Duty Instructor know and write it in the "defect or nil" column, then sign the post flight signature column (if PIC). No action should be taken by anyone other than Duty Instructor/Engineer; nothing should be written in the "Defect Action" column.

Tayside launched the Degree programme in association with Middlesex University and Loganair. The course is a three year program ending with a job with Loganair. This gives student status to candidates on the modular ATPL course and provides funding towards the cost of obtaining a commercial pilot licence. This is a huge step forward in pilot training and Tayside are the only school in the UK offering this modular fixed wing program. If you are interested in joining please send an e-mail confirming your intentions to: [email protected]

Lots of Fly-outs organised - would be fantastic to have a good attendance. If you want to attend any event please contact me direct or through the forums section....

The New Listening Squaks are provided for any person that doesn't want to talk to ATC but don't mind listening. The list should be used within 20nm of the airports, otherwise use your usual service. Remember this is for Listening purpose only !

You may come into the clubhouse and wonder where have all the Instructors gone? Through Interviews, aptitude and Sim tests I’m glad to confirm that many of the current Tayside Instructors have been successful and have now made the mammoth move to become airline pilots with Loganair and Ryanair. I’ll confirm in the next newsletter who’s been successful and how they are getting on? Just goes to show that your Instructor last month may now be the Pilot flying you to your holiday destination !
