IS ASSISTED LIVING RIGHT FOR YOUR
LOVED ONE?

ASSISTED LIVING is known by a number of terms:

Alternatives to nursing homes
Senior living
Senior residences
Personal care villages
Retirement community

The benefits are many and they allow your loved one the opportunity
to remain independent

Assistance is always nearby in case of a fall or other medical emergency

Some facilities provide varying degrees of help with other daily
activities, too

Assisted living is generally reserved for those seniors still independent to
some degree and don’t require around the clock medical care

Remember that the laws vary from state to state, including any licensing compliance laws

It can all affect Medicaid payments

Some assisted living facilities will also offer laundry service, health monitoring and assistance when
taking medication

You can find those with around the clock security, too

This is peace of mind for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s

Medicaid or Medicare may or may not pay a portion of the costs,
depending on the classification of the facility

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK

Have there been any health code violations and if so, were they
significant?
1

Were they handled and not repeated?
2

What about continuing education for employees or employee turnover?
3

Does the facility conduct background checks?
4

Are they legally bound to conduct background checks?
5

Are you allowed to visit any time?
6

Is the staff willing to take you on a tour during meal time so that you can see for yourself the quality of food being
served?
7

What about pets – do they allow them?
8

Don’t forget the assistance and guidance your estate planning or elder
care lawyer can provide

Finally, remember that the Better Business Bureau and
any state licensing agencies can provide insight as well
