2 SAMPLING

2 1 Thepurposeforwhicha sampleISrequiredmaybeconsidered eitheras beingto represent as largea bodyofmaterial as possiblein order tostudy Its average properties or as beingoneofa series representingarelativelysmall bodyofmaterial in order to study the vanabihty ofItsproperties Theformersampleswillbereferredtoas representative andtypicalof these are those samples taken m advanceofconstruction toassess the suttabihtyofa givensourceofSOlI The latter sampleswillbereferred to as selected and typicalare thosesamples taken forcontroltests carriedout duringconstructionwherethe samples representonlya small proportion ofthe wholework2 2 Representativesamplesshould be obtainedby takmg a number ofsub samples from dehrruted areas from WhICh matenal IS beingsampled and these sub samples should be thoroughly mixed Thenumber of sub samples should be a rrumrnum of five or moredependingon the area The quantity of the resultmg sample shall bereducedto that requiredfor tests If the quantity of the test sampleISone eighth or moreofthe total sample it shall beobtainedbynfflmgorquartering If the quantity ofthe test sample is less than one eighth ofthe total sample It shall be obtained by rruxmg SIX small samples ofappropriatequantity taken fromthe total sample2 3 Where several sub samples are taken they should normallyeachbe taken so as to ehnunate as far as possibleany segregation thatoccurredin the placmgof the matenal being sampled For examplethe coarse matenal of a stock pile or lorry load will normally beconcentratedat the base and edges and apex will be deficient 10 ItCare shouldalso be taken that the size of the samphng tool is not sosmall that the coarsermatenal rollsoff2 4 In some instances the whole of a selected sample may be takenfrom one place WIthout sub sampling For samglmg a representativesample froma quantity ofmaterial ofabout 4 m in SIze about 10subsamplesmay be required It ISconvenient of the size Ifthe sub samplecan be chosensuch that noreductionin the sizeofthis mixedsampleISrequired Selectedsamples will often be taken fromsoil mixedWith astabilizer and 10 many such instances speed of treatment wrllbe ofgreater Importance than thoroughnessof mixingof the sub samplesThe changes in uniformity brought about by nuxing may beundesirable because the selected sample may become better mixedthan the matenal fromwhichIt was taken2 5 The SIze of sample required will depend on the particle sizedistnbutlon and the purposeto whichIt to be put
