    This Indian Standard (Part 81) which is identical with IEC Pub 50 (302) (1983) ‘International electrotechnicalvocabulary-Chapter 302 : Electrical measuring instruments’, issued by the International ElectrotechnicalCommission (IEC), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of BasicElectrotechnical Standards Sectional Committee and approval of the Electrotechnical Division Council.

    Only the English text given in the IEC publication has been retained while adopting as ~dian Standard, and thepage numbers given here are not the same as in IEC Publication.

    IS 1885 (Part XI): 1966 ElectrotechnicaI Vocabulary Part XI Electrical Measurements was based on IEC Pub 50(20) (1958) International electrotechnical vocabulary :Group 20 Scientific and industrial measuring instmments.IEC 50 (20)(1958) has been revised and extended and has been brought out in one volume as IEC 50 (301, 302,303), Chapter 301: General terms on measurements in electricity, Chapter 302: Electrical measuring instrumentsand Chapter 303: Electronic measuring instruments.

    IS 1885 (Part 81) is being brought as dual numbered standard of IEC 50 (302) and similarly IEC 50 (301) and1~” 50 (303) are being dealt. When all the three parts of IS 1885 corresponding to IEC 50 (301, 302, 303) havebeen brought out, IS 1885 (Part XI) :1966 will stand withdrawn.

    SECTION 302-01—GENEML TERMS RELATING TO THE PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

    302-01-01

    electrostatic instrument

    An instrument intended to determine potential dif-ference which operates by means of electrostatic forcesbetween fixed and movable charged electrodes.

    302-01-02

    permanent-magnet moving-coil instrument

    An instrument which operates by the interaction of acurrent in a movable coil with the field of a fixedpermanent magnet.

    Note — llse movable part of these instruments can have more thanone coil, measuring the sum or ratio of the currents inthem.

    moving-magnet instrument

    Au instrument which operates by the interaction of thefield of a movable permanent magnet with a current ina fixed coil.

    Note. — The instrument can have more than one coil.

    moving-iron instrument

    An instrument comprising a movable pieee of soft mag-netic material which is actuated either by a current in af~ed coil or by one (or more) fixed piece(s) of soft mag-netic material, magnetized by a current in the fixed coil.

    An instrument which operates by the interaction of a cur-rent in a movable coil with a current in one or more fixedcoils.

    direct acting instrument

    An instrument in which the indicating or recordingdevice is mechanically connected to, and actuated by,the moving element.

    indirect acting instrument

    An instrument in which the indicating or recordingdevice is driven by a motor or other device, controlledby the quantity to be measured and usingelectromechanical, electrical or electronic means.

    Note. — Indirect acting instruments may make use of any methodof comparison, but this is usually electrical or

    mechanical.

    pointer instrument

    An indicating instrument in which the index-is a pointermoving over a fixed scale.

    An indicating instrument in which the indications aregiven by the displacetnent of an optical index over ascale which may be a part of the instrument or may beseparate from it.

    moving-sctile instrument

    An indicating instrument in which the scale movesrelative to a fixed index.

    A detecting instrument intended to indicate the polarityof one conductor with reference to another.

    phase sequence indicator

    An instrument intended to indicate, on a polyphasesystem the sequence in which the instantaneous vol-tages of the phase conductors reach their maximumvalues.

    synchronoscope

    Art instrument intended to indicate if two a.c. voltagesor polyphase voltages systems have the same frequencyand are in phase.

    An instrument intended to detect a leakage current toearth.

    An instrument intended to detect a lightning stroke andto give an estimate of the value of the current due to thislightning stroke by means of changes in the magneticcharacteristics of some of its components.

    An energy meter or a coulometer having a discimmersed in mercury and rotating in the field producedby an electromagnet or a permanen~ magnet.

    An energy meter which operates by the rotation of themoving coils of an electrod ynamic measuring element.

    induction meter

    An energy meter which operates by the rotation of thedisc of an induction measuring element.

    excess energy meter

    An energy meter intended to measure the excess energywhen the power exceeds a pre-determined value.

    An energy meter fitted with a means to indicate thehighest value of theequal time intervals.

    SECTION 302-05—BRIDGES

    Preface.-Owing to the great variety of types ofbridgeswhich are often known by different names and differonly by details of their circuits, /he list of termsdefined in the present section is lim]ted to some basictypes only.

    Whetstone bridge

    A four arm measuring bridge intended to measure thevalue of a resistor which forms one of the arms, the otherthree arms being resistors, at least one of which isadjustable.

    Kelvin (double) bridge

    Thomson (double) bridge

    A six arm measuring bridge intended to measure thevalue of a four-terminal resistor by comparison with afour-terminal standard resistor, all of the arms beingresistors, at least one of which is adjustable.

    transformer bridge

    An a.c. measuring bridge intended to measure impedan-ces, in which at least two arms consist of tapped wind-ings on a transformer, making use of the known ratiosof the turns and which can therefore have fixed valuestandards.

    SECTION 302-06-CONSTRIJCTIONAL ELEMENTS

    measuring element (of an electromechanicalmeasuring instrument)

    That part of a measuring instrument which transformsthe quantity to be measured into a mechanical move-ment.

    A circuit of a measuring instrument through whichflows the current of the circuit to which the measuringinstrument is connected.

    Note.— This current may be either the current directly invokedin the measurement or a proportional current suppliedby an external current tmnsformer or derived from anexternal shunt.
