NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard which is identical with ISO 7001 :1990 ‘Public information symbols’ along withAmendment No. 1 issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted bythe Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendations of the Basic Standards Sectional Committeeand approval of the Medical Instruments, General and Production Engineering Division Council.

The text of the ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standardwithout deviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards.Attention is particularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should beread as ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard while in IndianStandards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker. -~

PUBLIC INFORMATION SYMBOLS

1 Scope

This International Standard specifies the image content ofgraphical symbols used for the information of the public. Thefields of application specified for each graphical symbol are in-dicative of the way it is intended that the symbols should beused; their amlicat”mn maybe extended into other fields wherethis is considered appropriate.

2 Normative reference

The following standard contains provisions which, throughreference in this text, constitute provisions of this InternationalStandard. At the time of publication, the edition indicated wasvalid. Ail standards are subject to revision, and perties toagreements based on this International Standard are encouragedto investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editionof the standard indicated below. Members of IEC and ISOmaintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

ISO 3S64: 1984, Safety colours and safefy signs.

3 Definitions

For the purposes of this International Standard, the followingdefinitions apply.

3.1 referent: Subject represented by the graphical symbol.

3.2 graphical symbol: Visually perceptible figure used totransmit information independently of language. It maybe pro-duced by drawing, printing or other means.

3.3 public information symbol: Graphical symbol, in-tended to give information to the general public, the under-standing of which is not normally dependent on specialist oroccupational training.

3.4 function: Purpose of the graphical symbol.

3.5 field of application: Context in which the use of agraphical symbol to convey a message is appropriate.

3.6 image contant: Elements of the graphical symbol andtheir relative disposition.

3.7 standard image content: Image content as describedin words for each referent in this International Standard.

3.8 guide-line axample: Sabcted graphical interpretationof the graphical symbol which conforms to the standard imagecontent.
