SIZE DESIGNATION OF CLOTHES — MEN’S AND

BOYS’ OUTERWEAR GARMENTS

O INTRODUCTION

This 1nternatio~al Standard is one of a series which dealsessentially with the size designation of clothing, and is notdirectly concerned with sizing systems as such.

The primary aim of this and other International Standardsin this series is the establishment of a size designationsystem that indicates (in a simple, direct and meaningfulmanner) the body size of the man or boy that a garmentis intended to fit. Provided that the shape of his body (asindicated by the appropriate dimensions) has beenaccurately determined, this system will facilitate the choiceof garments that fit.

The size designation system is based on body and notgarment measurements. Choice of garment measurementsis normally left to the designer and the manufacturer, whoare concerned with style, cut and other fashion elements, and who must make due allowance for garments normallyworn beneath a specific outer garment.

Definitions and body measurement procedure areprescribed in ISO 3635, which is applicable to all categoriesof clothing.

1 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

This International Standard establishes a system ofdesignating the sizes of men’s and boy’s outerwear garments

(including knitwear and swimwear) that are classified as

a) covering the upper or the whole body, or

b) covering the lower body only,

and applies to civilian and uniform garments;~)

Both the control dimensions on which the size designationsystem is based and the method of indicating the sizedesignation on a garment label are laid down.

2 REFERENCE

This International Standard should be read in conjunctionwith the following International Standard :

ISO 3635, Size designation of clothes – Definitions andbody measurement procedufe.

Where practicable, thestandard pictogram, as given in ISO 3635, should be used asa means of indicating the size designation. Where it is notpracticable to use the standard pictogram the numericalvalues of the control dimensions shall be given, togetherwith the descriptive words such as chest girth, waist girth,

etc., alongside, in the order in which they are given inclause 4.

NOTE – The above requirementsshall not preclude the use, inexceptional instances and as specified by the national standards

Organization concerned, of

a) size designations comprising only one or two of the

applicable conttol dimensions;

b) size designations shown as a range by stating the minimumand maximum control measurements separated by an obliquestroke or a hyphen.

5.2 Garment measurements shall not be incorporated inthe size designation but, where considered of value, garment measurements may be indicated separately(see 6.3).

6 LABELLING

6.1 Method

The size designation of each garment Chall be indicatedclearly, conspicuously and in plainly Iegib, e form on a label,or on a swing ticket, or on both. Pictograrns shall be largeenough to ensure immediate understanding and numeralsshall, in all cases, be readily discernible.

6.2 Attachment

The label or swing ticket shall be securely attztche~ to thegarment and so positioned as to be easily readable.

6.3 Additional information

Information additional to the size designation may beseparately indicated on the label, or on the swing ticket,or on both, provided that it does not in any way reduc, ethe prominence and conspicuousness of the size designation.Such additional information may inclu& a size codenumber, body measurements, or garment measurementsconsidered to constitute useful information.

6.4 Exampte$ of labels

The examples of labels given in figures 1 and 2 illustratemethods of Iabelling that range from the simple indicationon the standard pictogram of the relevant controldimensions to more elaborate forms that provide additional

information, such as a garment measurement or a size codenumber. Where the size designation is supplemented by asize code number: separation of the two, as illustrated, renders the size code number readily recognizable as beingpart of a system of size d~ignation adopted by a nationalor limited population group only.
