FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Lubricantsand Related Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Petroleum, Coal and Related ProductsDivision Council.

Lithium Complex Greases for industrial purposes are being increasingly used all over the world for hightemperature multipurpose applications where conventional lithium based greases fail to provide satisfactorylevels of performance.

In India manufacture of multipurpose lithium complex greases commenced a few years ago and today thesegreases are being extensively used in steel plants, heavy engineering industries and several otherspecializedapplications.

Considering that 2000 to 3000 MTPA of lithium complex greases are being produced and also considering thata very large variation in the properties of these greases is possible, a need has been felt for formulation of a

National Standard for Lithium Complex Greases which can be used for industrial applications. Two gradesnamely, Grade A and Grade B have been covered in the standard which corresponds to the NLGI grades 2 and3 respectively.

For the purpose of deciding whether a.particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,observed or calculated, expressing the result of test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS 2:1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1 SCOPE

This standard prescribes the requirements and methodsof sampling and tests for Lithium Complex Greasessuitable for industrial purposes.

3 GRADES

The material shall be of “-- ‘-”- ‘-’- -‘me rouowmg graaes:

a) Grade A, and

b) Grade B.

4 REQUIREMENTS

4.1 The material shall be smooth and homogeneouspreparations free from objectionable odour and visibleimpurities. It shall be free from resins, resin oil,rosinate, tar oil, grit and fillers such as clay, asbestos,talc, etc, and from non-soap gelling agents likebentonite and silica gel.

4.2Composition

The material shall be prepared from refined mineral

lubricating oil, a suitable lithium complex soapgelling agent and performance additives may added.

4.2.1 The mineral oil extracted from the grease byMethod A prescribed in IS 1448 [Part 59] shall complyWith the following requirements:

4.3 The material shall also comply with therequirements given in Table 1 when tested accordingtothe methods given incolumn 50 fthe Table 1.

4.4 Keeping Quality

The keeping quality of the material shall be such thatwhen stored in original sealed containers under normalconditions it shall retain the properties given in thespecif~cation for not less than one year from the dateof manufacture.

5 PACKING AND MARKING

5.1 Packing

The material shall be packed in metal or any othersuitable containers as agreed to between the purchaserand the supplier. The containers shall be securelyclosed.

5.2 Marking

The containers shall be marked with the following:

a) Indication of the source of manufacture;

b) Name, type and grade of the material;

c) Net mass of the material;

d) Date of manufacture;

e) Recognised trade-mark, if any; and

1) Identification in code or otherwise to enablethe lot of consignment or manufacture to betraced back.

5.3 BIS Certification Marking

The containers may also be marked with the StandardMark.

5.3.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed bythe provisions of Bureau of Indian Standards Act,

1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder.The details of conditions under which the Iicence forthe use of Standard Mark may be granted to manu-facturers or producers may be obtained from theBureau of Indian Standards.

6 SAMPLING

The representative samples of the material shall bedrawn as prescribed in IS 1447 (Part 3).
