EXPLANATORY NOTE

This standard gives the nomenclature of pliers, pincers and nippers used for gripping, cutting or combined gripping and cutting of objects or wires. Nomenclature for different aspects of the above tools, such as component parts, handles, joints for closing pliers, joints for opening pliers, features of head, cutters, cutting edges, and shapes of nose and gripping surfaces, have been given in this standard.

For the nomenclature of spanners, wrenches, screw drivers and their accessories, reference may be made to IS : 6293-1981 ‘Nomenclature of the assembly tools for nuts and screws ( first revision)‘.

Wherever two nomenclatures have been given, the first one is according to the Indian Standard on the subject and the latter (given in parenthesis) is according to IS0 Standard.

This standard is based on IS0 5742-1982 ‘Pliers and nippers-Nomenclature’, issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Tools referred under No. 211 to 215 and No. 307 to 309 are not covered in IS0 but Indian Standards are available on them.
