0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institutionon 28 September 1983, after the draft finalized by the Travel R equisitesSectional Committee had been approved by the Consumer Products andMedical Instruments Division Council.

0.2 Sleeping bags are generall}' used on mo unta ins or on hi gh a lt itud ewhere th e ambient temperature is very low a nd climate is hum id andstormy. These bags may also be used by Defence personnel a nd civi lians,who are to mo ve from place to place and take shelter in temporaryhutrnents like tents .

0.3 Assistance has been deri ved from provi sional specifica t ion .l\o.CIT&CiTC-6/21 'Specification for bag, sleeping, MK-4' issued by Ministry ofDefence, Go vernment of India, in the preparation of this stand ard.

0.4 This standard conta ins clauses which ca ll for agreement between thepurchaser and the supplier and which perm it the pu rchaser to lise hisoption for selection to suit h is require me nts . The relevant clausesare 4.1, 5.2 and 8.1.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whethe r a p art icu lar requirement of th isstandard is com plied with , the final value, observed or ca lculated,expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2-1960·. The number of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified valuein this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the requirements for sleeping bag , kapok-filled,

2. SIZES

2.1 Sleeping bags shall be of the following sizes ( sre also Table I ):

3. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS

3.1 The shape and design ofsleeping bag shall be as shown in Fig. I to 3.

3.2 The leading dimensions of sleeping bag and its components andtolerances thereon, shall conform to those gh"en in Table l .

3.2.1 The dimensions of the bag and its inner liner shall be measuredwhen laid flat on the table after removal of the wrinkles and creases.

4. MATERIALS

4.1 The various components of the sleeping bag shall be made frommaterials specified in Table 2. Materials, not specifically designated,shall be suitable for the purpose intended.

5. WORKMANSIDP AND FINISH

5.1 The sleeping bag including the body, the face-flap and the innerliner shall be made to the design and dimensions as shown in Fig. I, 2and 3.

5.2 The colour of the cloth for the main body and the various compo­nents shall be as agreed to between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

5.3 The body of the bag shall be made in two pieces and shall beassembled later to form a cylindrical bag.

5.4 Each p iece of the body of the bag shall be mad e sepa rately from twola yers of fabric to form a case. The component casing shall be uniformlystuffed with grade 2 Indian kapok and qu ilted by hand or machine­stitched forming squares of 150 mm width. Number of stitches shallbe 4 to 6 per 25 mm for hand quilting and 5 to 6 per 25 mm for machinestitching. The kapok filling shall be of unifor m compactness.

5.5 A narrow casing measuring 100 X 960 mm in size shall be made fromspecified fabric a nd the web sh all be stitched lengthwise on the casing.The half portion of slide fastener together with casing shall be stitched toone side of the opening and the other half portion of the slide fa stenershall be stitched to the other side of the opening. The casings shall thenbe filled with Grade 2 kapok and machine stitched. Five equispacedbuttons on each side of the zip opening be attached on the inner side ofthe main body to correspond with button holes in the liner.

5.6 Upper surface of the body of the bag shall then be cut half wayfrom the face opening along the length up to a distance of 910 mm,

5.7 The face flap consisting of two square pieces of 280 mm ea ch shallbe cut from specified fabric and stitched to form a pad. It shall befilled with Grade 2 Indian kapok and machine-stitched. The face flapshall then be stitched on to the top portion of the face opening so as tocomplete the assembly. The two pieces of the main body shall then bestit ched together by me ans of a single row of machine stitching. Whilestitching the body pieces, 19 securing tapes 150 mm long and 12'5 mmwide shall be properly positioned all-round the periphery equally spacedto correspond to the securing tapes attached to the liner.

6. SAMPUNG

6.1 Unless otherwise agreed to between the purchaser and the supplierthe procedure gh-en in IS: 2500 (Part 1 )-1973* shall be followed forsampling. The inspection level and sampling plan as given in 6.2and 6.3 shall be followed.

6.2 The scale of sampling shall correspond to inspection level III givenin T able I of IS: 2500 ( Part 1 )- 1973* for all the requirements specifiedin this standard..

6.3 The sampling plan shall correspond to AQL plans of 4'0 percentgiven in Table :2 of IS: 2500( Part I) - 1973*.

7. MARKING

7.1 Each sleeping bag shall be legibly and permanently marked withthe following:

a ) Manufacturer's name or initials or registered trade-m ark,b ) Size,c) Batch in code or otherwise, andd) Month and year of manufacture.

7.2 The sleeping bag may also be marked with the lSI Certification:Ma rk.

NOTE - The use of the lSI Certification Mark is governed h y the provision! ofthe Indian St andards Institutiun (Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules a ndRegu larions made thereunder. The lSI Mark on products covered by an IndianStandard conveys the assurance that t hev have been produced to compl y with therequirements of that standard under a well-defin ed system of inspection, testing andqualit y co nt ro l which is d e vised and supervised by lSI and op erated bv the producer.lSI marked product! are abo continuously ch ecked by lSI fo r conformity to thatstandard as a further safeguard . 8. PACKING

8. I The sleeping bag shall be packed to ensure safe transportation.They may also be packed as agreed to between the purchaser and thesupplier.
