    FOREWORDThis Ind ian Standard ( Part 4 ) ( Fifth Revision ) was ad opted by the Bureau of Indian Stand ard son 21 December 1989, after the dr aft finalized by the Timber Stores Sectional Comm ittee hadbeen app roved by the Civil Engineering Division Coun cil.This stand ard , covering prov isions relating to metal fittings of plyw ood tea-chest, in its fourthrevision ( 1976 ) was pu blished as one of the following five par ts:

    Part 1 GeneralPart 2 PlywoodPart 3 BattensPart 4 Metal fittingsPart 5 Assembly and packing

    This fifth revision of Part 4 prescribes waste-waste quality tinplate or terne p late a s materialfor metal fittings. Only the minimu m thickness of metal fittings has been specified instead ofgiving the range of thickness. Since the testing of dim ensions of metal fittings is don e on a setof 12 pieces, the definition of lot size has been m odified accordingly.In the formu lation of this stand ard du e weightage has been given to international co-ordin ationamon g t he stand ard s and practices prevailing in different countries in add ition to relating it tothe p ractices in the field in this country .For the pu rpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is comp lied with,the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be roun dedoff in accorda nce with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for roun ding off nu merical values ( revised). Thenu mber of significant places retained in the roun ded off value shou ld be the same as that of thespecified value in this standard.

    ( Fifth Rev ision1 SCOPE1 .1 This stand ard ( Part 4 ) covers d imension sand other requirements of metal fittings usedin the assemb ly of plyw ood tea-chests.2 REFERENCES2.1 The Indian Standard IS 4995 : 1968Neth ods for rand om samp li& is a necessaryadjun ct to this standard.3 MATERIAL3.1 The metal fittings sh all be man ufacturedfrom waste-waste qu ality tinp late or terneplate. The tinp late or terne plate shall have aclean sm .ooth flat surface and sh all be free fromrust and serrated edges.4 DIMENSIONS AND TOLE RANCES4 . 1 T h i c k n e s sThe minimu m nominal thickness of metal fittingsfor corner, top and b ottom shall be 022 mm.4.2 WidthThe wid th of metal fittings for corner, top andbottom shall be 38 + i mm .4.3 Leng th4 .3 .1 The length of 4 corners and 8 pieces fortop and bottom for square and rectangular tea-chests of the sizes mentioned shall be as given inTable 1.

    43.2 Th e 4 corner pieces shall be flat withbeaded edges.4.3.3 The 8 top and bottom pieces shall bewith bead ed edges, angled 90 and a V notchin the centre; notch extending up to the fold.The position of notch sh all be as indicated inTable 1.4.3.4 For tea-chest of size 380 mm X 685 mm X845 mm , used exclusively for packin g instan ttea, th e length of Sttings shalI be as foilows:

    a) For corWs4 pieces flat w ith beaded edges and oflength 344 mm.

    b ) For top and bottomI) 4 pieces flat with beaded edges 686 mm .2) 4 pieces flat w ith bead ed edges oflength 380 mm.

    NOTE - Metal fittings with straight end shall bepermitted for this size only.5 SAMPLING .5 . 1 T h e method of drawing representativesamp les of tea-chest fittings shall be as prescribedin Annex A.6 MARKING6 .1 Each fitting shall be marked with ind icationof the source of manufacture.

    ( Clause 5.1 )SAMPLING OF PLYWOOD TEA-CHEST FITTINGS

    A-l SAMPLINGA-l.1 Lot

    In a consignment all the sets of metal fittings( 4 corners and 8 top and bottom pieces ) foreach size of tea-chest man ufactured from thesame material shall be grouped together toconstitute a lot.A-l.2 Each lot shall be tested sep arately fordetermin ing its conformity to the requ iremen tsof the standard.A-2 SCALE OF SAMPLINGA-2.1 The nu mber of fittings to be selected inthe samp le from a lot shall depend upon thesize of the lot and shall be in accordan ce withco1 1 and 2 of Tab le 2.Ad.2 The fittings for the samples sh all beselected at rand om from the lot. For randomselection of the fittings guidan ce may beobtained from IS 4905 : 1968.

    A-3 CRITERION FOR CONFORMITYA-3.1 All the fittings selected in the samp le shallbe visually examined and inspected for dimen-sions and tolerances. A fitting in one or morerequirements shall be considered as defective.A-3.2 A lot shall be consid ered as having con-forming to the requirements of this standard ifthe nu mber of defective fittings as obtainedin A-3.1 d oes not exceed the correspondingperm issible num ber of defectives in co1 3 ofTable 2.
