INTRODUCTION

This family history project has been progressing

since about 2007. With the generous help and

support of many contributors a great many facts,

stories, and pictures have been compiled about

many different people throughout the various

branches of the Irvine family.

Until November 2018, this family register

consisted of the descendants of my mother’s

(Patricia Irvine) paternal Great-grandparents,

Alexander Campbell Irvine and Janet Kerr

Shirra. Their family lines are well documented,

and I also had good information about the

parents and family of Janet Kerr Shirra, who

came from St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

Regrettably, I had not been able to find any

information about the ancestors of Alexander Campbell Irvine. I knew that Alexander was born

in Ireland in 1844, and that he had come with his parents to Canada, from Ireland, in 1847 (at the

age of two or three). Despite this, I wasn’t able to find anything about Alexander’s parents,

ancestors or siblings.

This changed one day in November 2018: I came across a record in the 1871 Canada Census that

included someone called “Elexander C. Irvin” (sic) who had been born in Ireland in “about

1843”. By itself, I did not consider this to be a likely reference to our Alexander Irvine (there

could have been many Alex Irvines born in Ireland around 1843). However, a closer examination

of the family in the record, and some further investigation, revealed that this could well be

Alexander’s family. Here is what I know, and what my research revealed:

1. I knew that Alexander was born in Ireland in 1844, and had come to Canada, from

Ireland, with his parents in 1847 (The immigration year is recorded in the 1901 Canada

Census).

2. The “Elexander C. Irvin” in the record was the oldest of seven siblings, and the record

indicates he was born in Ireland about 1843. The next oldest sibling was “William Irvin”,

born in Ontario, Canada “about 1847”. All the remaining siblings were born in Ontario,

Canada. So, this is consistent with what we know about Alexander (and his parents)

coming to Canada in 1847.

3. Their mother is listed as “Elizabeth Irvine”, born in Ireland about 1817. Elizabeth is listed

as a widow – no father is listed in the record.

4. Further investigation revealed a Grave record in the Streetsville Public Cemetery, Peel,

Ontario, for a William Irvine (1817-1860), his wife Elizabeth Campbell (1817-1901),

and their children Eliza Irvine (1845-1863), and Francis Irvine (1858-1916). These

birth dates for Elizabeth and Francis are consistent with the 1871 census, and more

importantly we can see that Alexander’s middle name seems to have come from his

mother’s family.

Although this evidence is not perfect, I feel it is strong enough to indicate that we now know

who Alexander’s parents and siblings were.

I update this book on an ongoing basis: If you know of family members who need to

be added, or whose particulars need to be updated or corrected, I would be very glad to hear from

you! The following is what I would like to be including for everyone in the family tree:

1. Any photographs you are willing to share.

2. Full Name.

3. Where they were born.

4. Birth date.

5. Father’s and Mother’s names.

6. Name of married/ common law partner + birth date.

7. Names and dates for parents of those partners (When born, married & died).

8. Date and place of marriage.

9. Names, birthdates, and birth location of children.

10. Education

11. Any other information such as work history, interests, interesting stories, awards, honors,

notable achievements, etc., etc.

12. If applicable, the place & date of death, and place of burial.

have any information to add, or if you know of anything that needs to be corrected, I would be

NOTES ABOUT SOURCES

This book has been compiled to organize and present most of the information that I have

collected since 2007 about the descendants of William Irvine and Elizabeth Campbell. Much of

the information came from public sources, notably from genealogy websites such as

Ancestry.com, and from other published sources such as obituaries, newspaper articles and other

media reports.

I am particularly grateful to several people who contributed much time and effort, as well as

information and pictures from their branches of the family:

Much information came directly from my mother, Patricia (Irvine) Hyde and my mother’s

sister, Elizabeth Caroline (Irvine) Robertson.

Kevin Trimble is a Great-grandson of Elizabeth (Bessie) Adaline Campbell Irvine (1880-1959)

and her husband, George Frederick Trimble (1876-1939). Kevin very generously sent me the

pages from the Irvine Family Bible that was compiled by Bessie and her mother, Janet Kerr

(Shirra) Irvine (1847-1904). Kevin also contributed pictures, as well as much information about

his branch of the family.

Andrea (Hughes) Wierstra is a Granddaughter of John Arthur Towers Irvine (1885-1985).

Andrea shared some fascinating stories and interesting information from a diary she has that

belonged to Janet Kerr Shirra (Wife of Alexander Campbell Irvine).

Brenda Darlene Kee compiled a tremendous amount of information about the descendants of

her Great-grandfather, Gerald Irvine (1849-1925) and the family of her Grandmother, Alice

Teresa Irvine (1884-1969). I am very grateful to Brenda for all her work.

HOW TO USE THE FAMILY REGISTER

The family register is divided into generations beginning with William Irvine &

Elizabeth Campbell. If you want to find information about any specific person or

family, you should use the following procedure:

Use the alphabetical name index at the back of the book to locate the people you

are looking for. Direct descendants of William & Elizabeth are identified by a

whole number. Spouses are indented, below each descendant, and identified with a

letter. Their children are further indented and listed below them. Details about

those children, their spouses and their families, will be found in the following

section (next generation) of the register.

FIRST GENERATION

1. WILLIAM IRVINE (1817-1860) Born in Ireland in 1817. He married Elizabeth

Campbell in Ireland, probably about 1842. I don’t have any information about who his

parents and ancestors were. He and Elizabeth emigrated from Ireland to Canada in

1846, with the two children they had at that time: Alexander Campbell and Eliza.

William & Elizabeth were probably among the one million Irish people who

emigrated from Ireland because of the Potato Famine between 1845 and 1849. The

famine was unimaginably dreadful: In addition to the million who left, about one

million more people also died in Ireland during the famine years. William and

Elizabeth had six more children after coming to Canada: William, Gerald, James,

Jane, Robert Nixon and Frank. In the 1851 Canada Census he is recorded with his

family living in Peel Region, west of the city of Toronto. His profession is listed as

Joiner (a maker of stairs, doors, frames, and windows, etc.). He died in Toronto,

Ontario in 1860, aged 43 years. Buried at Streetsville Public Cemetery, Peel, Ontario.

a. ELIZABETH CAMPBELL (1816-1901) Born in Ireland on March 15th 1816.

Regrettably, I have no information about who her parents and ancestors were. She

died in Peel, Ontario on July 17th 1901, aged 85 years. Buried at Streetsville

2. ALEXANDER CAMPBELL IRVINE (1844-1901) Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland

on May 13th 1844. He emigrated to Canada in 1846 and married Janet Kerr Shirra in

Streetsville, Ontario on July 18th 1872. They had six children. In the 1881 Canada

Census he was described as a Insurance Broker; in 1891 as a Bookkeeper; and in 1901

as a Painter. He died in Toronto, Ontario on October 28th 1901, aged 57 years. Buried

at Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

a. JANET KERR SHIRRA (1847-1904) Born in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland on

August 10th 1847, daughter of William Shirra (1816-) and Christina (or Christian)

McKenzie (1825-1915). She emigrated to Canada in 1866 (see notes below) and

was married to Alexander Campbell Irvine on July 18th 1872. She died in

Toronto, Ontario on April 10th 1904, aged 56 years. Buried at Park Lawn

Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

Notes about the Ancestors of Janet Kerr Shirra: I believe that Janet’s parents were

William Shirra (1816-) and Christina (or Christian) McKenzie (1825-1915). William was

born in St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland; Christina was born in Sandhurst, England

(This is based on information from the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Scotland Censuses). They

were married in St. Ninians on August 25th 1844. According to notes in the Irvine Family

Bible sent to me by Kevin Trimble, Janet emigrated to Canada in 1866 - - But, the 1871

Scotland Census indicates she was back there at that time. This is possible because she

married Alex Irvine, in Canada, in 1872. Christina died in Peel, Ontario on March 22nd

1915: Her name on the death certificate is “Christian McKenzie Shirra”, and her age is

recorded as 90 years and 19 days (which would make her birthdate March 3rd 1825). She

was widowed at that time, and the informant was her daughter, Elizabeth Shirra. It is also

noted that she was born at Sandhurst, England and her parents were James McKenzie and

Janet Kerr (which would explain the name of her daughter, Janet Kerr Shirra).

William & Christina had six children: James (1846-), Janet Kerr (1847-1904), Elizabeth

B. (1852-), John (1855-1916), Margaret (1859-1861) & William (1860-1861). John

Married Jane Francey (1859-1900) in Dufferin, Ontario on February 17th 1884, and they

had six children.

3. ELIZA IRVINE (1845-1863) Born in Ireland in 1845. She died in Toronto, Ontario in

1863, aged 18 years. Buried at Streetsville Public Cemetery, Peel, Ontario.

4. WILLIAM IRVINE (1848-1918) Born in Toronto, Ontario on October 23rd 1848. He

married Charlotte Emma Whitton in Hastings, Ontario on May 1st 1878 and they had

eight children. He died in Deseronto, Ontario in 1918, aged 70 years. Buried at

Deseronto Cemetery, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario

a. CHARLOTTE EMMA WHITTON (1861-1912) Born in Tecumseh, Ontario on May

1st 1878, she was the daughter of James & Frances Whitton. She died in

Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario on September 3rd 1912, aged 51 years. Buried at

Deseronto Cemetery, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario

5. GERALD IRVINE (1849-1925) Born in Toronto, Ontario on October 27th 1849. He

married Charlotte Teresa Crozier in Peel, Ontario on July 2nd 1877 and they had five

children. According to the 1891, 1901 and 1911 Canada Censuses he was a farmer. He

died in Peel, Ontario on January 17th 1925, aged 75 years. Buried at Saint John’s Dixie

Cemetery, Mississauga, Ontario.

a. CHARLOTTE TERESA CROZIER (1850-1913) Born in Ontario on August 4th 1850,

she was the daughter of John C. Crozier (1812-1907) & Jane Wright (1819-1914).

She died in Ontario on July 16th 1913, aged 63 years. Buried at Saint John’s Dixie

6. JAMES IRVINE (1852-1906) Born in Ontario on October 27th 1852. He married Maria

Cook in Peel, Ontario on February 26th 1884. He died in Streetsville, Peel, Ontario on

May 26th 1906, aged 53 years. Buried at Streetsville Public Cemetery, Peel, Ontario.

a. MARIA COOK (1851-1937) Born in Ontario in 1851, she was the daughter of

Adam Cook (1811-1876) and Catherine Cantelon (1814-1903). She died in

Toronto on September 16th 1937, aged 86 years. Buried at Streetsville Public

Cemetery, Peel, Ontario.

Canada censuses (Single; living at home). In the 1881 census, her birth year is given

as 1860, which would have made her 21 years old. I haven’t found any record of her

later life.

8. ROBERT NIXON IRVINE (1857-1929) Born in Streetsville, Peel, Ontario in 1857. He

married first, Mary Eliza Snider in Belleville, Ontario on March 2nd 1882. They had

one child who died in infancy. He married second, Kathleen Prickett in York, Ontario

on April 18th 1920. He died in Hastings, Ontario on December 15th 1929, aged 72

years. Buried at Deseronto Cemetery, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario.

a. MARY ELIZA SNIDER (1860-1916) Born in Ontario on September 4th 1860, she

was the daughter of Harman Snider and Sabra Amelia Garbutt. She died in

Hastings, Ontario on October 28th 1916, aged 56 years.

i. GERTRUDE MAY IRVINE (1884-1884)

b. KATHLEEN PRICKETT (1872-1953) Born about 1872. She was the daughter of

John Prickett and Mary Ann Griffith. She died in 1953, aged 81 years. Buried at

Deseronto Cemetery, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario.

9. FRANCIS (FRANK) IRVINE (1859-1916) Born in Toronto on October 17th 1859. In the

1891 and 1901 Canada censuses he was living with his mother, and his occupation

was Bricklayer. As far as I know, he never married. He died in Toronto in 1916, aged

56 years. Buried at Streetsville Public Cemetery, Peel, Ontario.

10. WILLIAM SHIRRA IRVINE (1873-1937) Born

in Toronto, Ontario on June 7th 1873. He

married Caroline Ann Tabb in Toronto on

October 3rd 1903 and they had four children.

He was a Confectioner. He died in Toronto

on May 1st 1937, aged 63 years.

a. CAROLINE ANN TABB (1879-1971) Born

in Toronto, Ontario on Oct. 28th 1879;

daughter of Charles Hender Tabb (1854-

1935) and Caroline Jane Page (1853-

1929). She died in Toronto on January

20th 1971, aged 91 years. Caroline Ann

Tabb is pictured at right with her

Granddaughter, Patricia Irvine Hyde.

11. FREDERICK JAMES IRVINE (1874-1875) Born in Peel, Ontario on December 21st

1874. He died in Peel, Ontario on August 30th 1875, aged eight months.

12. ROBERT ALEXANDER IRVINE (1877-1918) Born in Peel, Ontario on September 11th

1877. He married Harriet Catherine Backus in Toronto on January 21st 1889, and they

had one child. He was a Confectioner with the Willard Chocolate Company. He died

at 105 Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto on October 13th 1918, aged 41 years. Cause of

death was influenza. Buried at Prospect Cemetery (Sec. 12, Lot 1271), Toronto.

a. HARRIET (HATTIE) CATHERINE BACKUS (1880-1923) Born on March 19th 1879

in Marthaville, Ontario in 1880; daughter of William Backus (1850-1894) and

Harriet Ann Aldous (1859-). She died in Toronto on October 6th 1923, aged 43

years. Buried at Prospect Cemetery (Sec. 12, Lot 1271), Toronto.

i. WILLIAM ROBERT IRVINE (1900-1970)

13. ELIZABETH (BESSIE) ADALINE CAMPBELL

IRVINE (1880-1959) Born in Streetsville,

Ontario on February 11th 1880. She married

George Frederick Trimble in Toronto on

October 5th 1904, and they had six children.

She died on May 5th 1959, aged 79 years. My

Hilton in Toronto on June 10th 1929. John and Mabel had two children. I think he

lived most of his life in the Etobicoke (Toronto) area working in the Rubber (or Tire)

industry. He may have retired to the Kingston area because that is where his wife

Mabel came from. He died in Kingston, Ontario in 1987, aged 102 years. Buried at

Piccadilly Cemetery, Frontenac County, Ontario.

39. DOUGLAS RAYMOND IRVINE (1912-1943)

Born in Toronto, Ontario on March 6th 1912.

He was educated at Runnymede Public

School and Humberside Collegiate. He was

Salesman at Exide Batteries in Toronto for

several years before joining the Royal

Canadian Air Force in June 1942. Following

training in Toronto, Brantford, Fingal and

Malton, he went overseas in early 1943, and

was assigned to RAF 97 Squadron, flying as

the Bomb-Aimer or ‘Bombardier’ on an Avro

Lancaster Bomber. Flight Sergeant D.R.

Irvine died in the crash of a Lancaster at

Gravely, Cambridgeshire, England on

December 17th 1943. That night became

known known in the R.A.F. as “Black

Thursday”: After completing a successful raid

over Germany, the Lancasters of 97 Squadron

encountered thick fog when trying to return to

their base at RAF Airfield Bourn. After one

aircraft crashed while trying to land at Bourn,

the remaining aircraft made for other airfields nearby, but the heavy fog was

widespread that night. Four other aircraft crashed in the fog at other fields, including

D.R. Irvine’s Lancaster No. JB1170 which came down 1¼ miles north-east of

Gravely. 36 aircrew were lost that night, including a Lancaster that was lost over

Berlin. These were the worst losses of the War for 97 Squadron, and Bourn Airfield.

Douglas was 31 years old. Buried at Cambridge City Cemetery, Cambridgeshire,

England. Grave #14552. He was awarded Operational Wings and promoted to Flight

Sergeant post-humously on August 7th 1946. The newspaper clipping, on the facing

page, reporting the death of Flight Sergeant Irvine is from the Globe & Mail,

December 24th 1943.

40. PHYLLIS MARY IRVINE (1913-2003) Born in Toronto, Ontario on Sept. 16th 1913. She

married John Eaton Garton. She died on October 9th 2003, aged 90 years. Buried at

Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto.

practiced as a nurse in Montreal and New

York City. She married J. Richard Hyde on

August 3rd 1956 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal

Church, Newton, Iowa, Rev. Joseph Gregori

officiating. After raising their family in

Beaconsfield, Quebec, Pat and Dick retired

to Knowlton in Quebec’s Eastern

Townships, and later in Ottawa, Ontario. She

died in Ottawa on December 10th 2018, aged

86 years. Buried at Mount Royal Cemetery,

Born in Montreal, Quebec on November

15th 1912, he was the eldest son of

George Gordon Hyde (1884-1946) and

Lilian Boronow (1890-1962). Married

to M. Patricia Irvine on August 3rd 1956

in Newton, Iowa. They had four

children: Michael Richard, Wendy

Patricia, Laurie Elizabeth and Suzanne

Jane. J. Richard Hyde was a Montreal

lawyer, soldier, provincial politician and

Judge. He grew up in Westmount,

Quebec, and studied at the Royal

Military College of Canada (RMC) in

Kingston from 1930 to 1934. He studied

law at Cambridge University in England

(1934-35) and at Universite de Montreal

from 1935-38. He was called to the

Quebec Bar in 1938, and practiced law

with his father at the law firm of Hyde & Ahern (later called Ahern, Lalonde,

Nuss & Drymer). During the Second World War he served with the Royal

Canadian Artillery in England, France and Belgium. After the war he resumed his

law practice and remained active in the reserves. When he retired from the

reserves in 1954, he held the rank of Brigadier-General and was commander of

the Third Division, Royal Canadian Artillery. In May 1955 he was nominated to

run for the Liberal party in a Quebec provincial by-election. Later that year he

was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, representing the riding of

Westmount-St. Georges. He was re-elected in 1956, 1960, 1962 and 1966. He was

Speaker of the National Assembly from January 9th 1962 to October 1965, and

from 1965 to 1966 he was Minister of Revenue in the cabinet of Premier Jean

Lesage. He did not run in the 1970 election. In 1971 he was appointed a Judge of

the Quebec Provincial Court. He retired in 1982. In 1984, Pat and Dick moved to

Knowlton, Quebec and later to Ottawa, Ontario. J. Richard Hyde died in Ottawa

on July 15th 2003, aged 90 years. Buried at Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal,

The night of December 16 - 17, 1943 became known in the Royal Air Force as “Black

Thursday”: After completing a successful raid over Germany, the Lancasters of 97 Squadron

encountered thick fog when trying to return to their base at R.A.F. Airfield Bourn, Cambridge.

After one aircraft (JB119) crashed when trying to land at Bourn, the remaining aircraft made for

other airfields nearby, but the heavy fog was widespread that night. Four more aircraft crashed in

the fog at other fields, including F/S Scott’s Lancaster JB117 which came down 1¼ miles north-

east of Gravely, Cambridgeshire. Seven men in 3 of the aircraft survived the crashes, but a total

of 36 aircrew were lost that night, including a sixth Lancaster (JB963) that was lost over Berlin.

These were the worst losses of the War for 97 Squadron, and Bourn Airfield.
