Iron Lady of Pepsi CoIndo-American BusinesswomanSpent her childhood in a modest conservative South Indian family in Chennai, IndiaGraduated from IIM Calcutta and did her masters in public and private management from Yale UniversityShe first worked as a receptionist during her initial years at US to gather some moneyWorked at JnJ, ABB, BCG and Motorola before being selected in Pepsi.Became the CEO in 2001.

Her leadership style is based on the 5C’s-(jotted these points from a video)Competence-be the ‘go to’ person. Stand out and be a life long student. Unless you are an expert in a chosen field, u will get nowhere.Courage- speak out and have the confidence on your knowledge. You should be confident about the Communication- cannot overinvest in comm.. as a leader u constantly have to mobilize the grps. Learn to sync the brain with the output from the mouthConsistency- Change your mind against a consistent framework and don’t make people guess what you’re doing Compass- u cannot compromise on integrity and your compass doesn’t point due north, everything comes crashing down. U may have the competence, courage, excellent communication and consistency but if u don’t have integrity, it all goes to waste.

Risk Taking- Made major changes in the product line when she took over pepsi. A risk taker, Nooyi pushed Pepsi beyond soda, first by helping to start the company's fast-food chains in 1997, and later byspearheading the purchase of Tropicana in 1998.

Emotional Intelligence: She is a people first person and love to create an informal atmosphere at work. She admits to walking barefoot in foot when her foot gets sore after wearing heels. She sings, she walks around barefoot, and makes it a point to attend to her family’s telephone calls

even during critical business meetings. She keeps in touch with everyone using social media and blogs. She writes a letter to all her 285000 employees every 2 weeks about any matter she likes. She once wrote a letter about her own daughter and how fast young girls grow up and how important it is to spend time with them.

Motivational: Nooyi talked about how she wrote letters to the parents of her entire top executive team, telling them how proud they should be about the work of their offspring. On her personal front, it is amazing how she came out of her conservative family to the open market in the US. She has an excellent work-life balance. To state an example, on days when she cant respond to her daughter’s constant questions, she trained her receptionist to answer all homework and television privileges queries. So she doesn’t lose track of what her daughter’s doing.

Proactive: her mission as CEO is to change the trend from caffeinated drinks to more healthier drinks. The takeover of Tropicana, which none of her predecessors had done, bears testimony to that. She has actively made it a point to start new initiatives like ‘Performance with purpose’ which instills a sense of social responsibility among the employees. She has had consistent success in acquisitions and associations with various companies namely Pizza Hut and Taco Bell along with her promotion of in-house brands such as Frito Lay, Tropicana Fruit Juice and Quaker Oats. She does constant store checks to see whether her products are doing well and speaks to the store managers herself to see if they need anything. She is also on the board of Lincoln Center for the Performing arts, which proves that she hasn’t lost her zest for arts even after becoming a businesswoman.

Down to earth: Nooyi recommends not sitting on your laurels just because you have attained a high rank in the professional sphere. A tireless worker herself, she gets only 5 hours of sleep a night, and continuously educates herself, re-evaluating her decisions and ensuring that she is keeping the best interest of the company and its employees in mind. Another example is when she was asked about how she felt that her name was mentioned in Gossip Girl, all she said was maybe they mentioned it because they found the name exotic.

Pro’s and Con’s of her leadership style: Pros:

Lower employee turnover since she became the CEO Higher employee satisfaction Happier work environment

Cons Profit management may suffer since it is a very people oriented

company Too much involvement with the employees can have a negative

impact on the leader-120clock high

I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO MENTION THESE POINTS!Hard figures reveal that her leadership has caused Pepsico to achieve double the sales after she took over in 2001.
