• Most famous Women’s Suffragist• Created National Women’s Suffrage
Association (NAWSA) in 1869– Fought for Voting Rights, Equal Pay, Temperance,
and Education for Women and Blacks

Challenges to Suffrage• Women suffragists were accused of being
unfeminine and immoral– Some were physically attacked
• Suffragists disagreed on how to achieve the vote–Constitutional Amendment (All at Once)
or State by State Approach (Slower)–Dispute split/weakened the movement

NAWSA–Believed in the State by State approach to
granting Women Suffrage– Felt Constitutional Amendment was not
possible as neither party (Rep. or Dem.) endorsed it

• Young members of NWSA who took more activist approach to gaining Suffrage
• Had helped women gain suffrage in England where protests and riots were common
• Felt that pushing for Amendment would be faster and more effective way to achieve Suffrage– Eventually broke from NAWSA and formed
