Summer Water Safety Training Programmes in Ireland

Irish Water Safety’s Area Committees nationwide (known as Water Safety Area Committees or WSAC) run an extensive series of swimming and water safety weeks throughout the summer at pools, rivers, lakes and beachfronts.

Many of these classes extend beyond the summer in places that have pools and leisure centres.

Swim weeks consist of instruction in swimming. Water safety weeks develop skills in rescue, water survival and basic life support. Details of these programmes are regularly updated on Irish Water Safety’s website, www.iws.ie.

Irish Water Safety Volunteers have taught thousands of children the skills, attitudes and behaviours necessary to stay safe in, on and around water. Following is a list of summer classes that are taking place in 2014.

WHAT WE DO:Teachswimming,lifesaving,waterconfidence,safety,survival,rescueskillsandbasiclifesupport.Coursesareprovidednationwidetothegeneralpublicandalsotochildrenaspartoftheprimaryschoolcurriculum.ManyqualificationssuchasourPoolandBeachLifeguardingAwardsarerecognisedinternationally.

Arrangeconferences,lecturesanddemonstrationstoLocalAuthorities,GovernmentAgencies,NGO’s,schools,Collegesandmembersofthepublic.

Publishliteraturetopromotewatersafetyandtargetat-riskgroups.Weprovidepublicationsforallaquaticactivitiestoassistthepublicadheretobestpractices.

OurvolunteerscarryoutRiskAssessmentsonbathingareasandwaterwaysnationwidethatmayposeaparticularrisktothepublic,inordertomakethemsaferbytheerectionofPublicRescueEquipment,signageandothernecessaryfacilities.WealsoadviseandassistLocalAuthorities,stateagenciesandprivateenterprisesonmattersrelatingtowatersafety.CompletePublicRescueEquipmentchecks.

BeachLifeguardsaretrainedandtestedbyourexaminersfortheLocalAuthorities,priortotheannualsummerseasoneachyear.

TrainandexaminerescueboatcrewsfortheCommunityRescueBoatsIrelandandtheCoastGuard.

PromotemarinesafetyalongwithothermembersoftheMarineSafetyWorkingGroupandtheIrishMarineSearchandRescueCommittee.

Nationalandlocalmediahelpbuildpublicawarenessbyactivelycommunicatingoursafetymessagestothepublic.

Pressreleasestargettheseasonalhazardsatsea,onourinlandwaterwaysandotheraquaticenvironments.

Analysisandprovisionofdrowningstatisticsthatenableseffectivetargetingof“atrisk”groupsinIreland.
