Fifty years ofengineeringexcellenceOperating out of Ballycallan, County Kilkenny, Dooley Brothers EngineeringWorks Ltd. has provided an unrivalled trailer manufacturing service sinceits formation in 1962. As the company celebrates its 50th anniversary, IrishTrucker caught up with MD Joe Dooley to get an insight into the excellentrange of products and services on offer. It didn’t take long to realise thatthese guys deserve their reputation as the best in the business!

Dooley Bros has beenestablished as a trailermanufacturer since 1962,

producing a wide range of trailers at itspurpose-built engineering facility atClonard, Ballycallan near Kilkenny city. These include agricultural tractortrailers; car, van and 4x4 trailers; rigidtruck trailers; and articulated lowloadertrailers. As well as manufacturing,Dooley Bros also provides servicingand parts, catering for the agricultural,

construction, services and utilitiessectors amongst others.

A family business since its inception,Dooley Bros has developed a range ofstandard models but each of these canbe tailored to suit customers’ exactspecifications. Or they can build acompletely bespoke model utilisingtried and trusted components andassemblies.

AutoCad and 3D drawingtechnologies are deployed by highly-

skilled and –experienced technicians /engineers using a combination of thelatest CNC and conventionalmachinery to craft trailers to preciserequirements.

Since re-entering the truck bodybuilding business, Dooley BrothersEngineering Works Ltd. has suppliedcattle bodies, lowloader bodies and flatbodies to the same exacting standardsas its trailers. Production issupplemented by a limited number of

products from other producers - suchas livestock boxes for cars and 4x4sand box van trailers for the commercialsector.

Current MD Joe Dooley reflects on thegenesis of the family business: “Wewere established 50 years ago by my

dad Jimmy and his brother Billy. Jimmyhad worked with a trailer manufacturerbefore then and that’s the business wegot involved in from the very beginning. We also did some agriculturalengineering equipment like yardscrapers and feeding troughs but,

being based in the country, the realwork was in building agricultural tractortrailers and that’s what theyconcentrated on.”

Since the sixties, of course, the sizeand complexity of trailers has increaseddramatically and there was a significant

increase in demand, not least because of the company’sreputation for building sturdy, long-lasting products, whileDooley Bros has also diversified its operation tomanufacture a vast range of trailer types, catering for a widerange of business sectors.

At present, the company employs a crew of 13 includingJoe’s brother Sean, having scaled back somewhat since theboom times, mainly due to the fact that the UK export markethad dried up. But there are encouraging signs that thismarket will open up again, with inroads having been made inrecent months.

Joe ran me through a few of the milestones recorded in thissuccessful family business as it gradually got into newmarkets: “We were formed in 1962 building agriculturaltrailers and registered as a limited company in 1971. In 1979we broke into car trailer production on a serious scale. In ’92,we started to build dump trucks for the construction industryand in ’98 we started doing lowloader trailers. In 2004, we

developed an artic lowloader trailer.”Even though agricultural work still accounts for a a large

percentage of output, Dooleys also manufacture a lot oflowloaders, flats and specialist trailers for small trucks. They have customers from all over Ireland, the UK andeven from as far afield as Norway, Australia, Canada andPoland.

As a family business with a personal touch, they pridethemselves on providing a top class back-up service. Theystand over every product they design and manufacture andhave a policy of always being willing to repair or refurbishany Dooley trailer, even if it’s 50 years old. Spare parts areavailable for all Dooley products and the parts departmenthas been expanded to also offer parts for other products, including an extensive range of axle and hitch couplingspares.

Today, Dooleys still carry out some light engineering workwhen their workload permits, selling bale handlingequipment, feeding troughs, cow cubicles and yardscrapers.

The ‘90s heralded substantial expansion to the companypremises with some of the old buildings being demolishedto make room for a new fabrication area with an overheadcrane. Trailers changed significantly during this time, withsteel-bodied trailers becoming the norm. The increase insize also brought tandem axles in greater numbers andnew models were introduced to incorporate new featuresand sizes. Design of the trailers was now carried out bycomputer - a forerunner to the current AutoCAD and 3D

design packages.

The new millennium brought furtherdevelopment, with shotblast facilitiescommissioned in another extension tothe fabrication area. CNC pressbrakeand profile cutting was added toimprove production and capability.Technology on trailers developed inline with previous decades, usheringin further increases in the size andspeed of tractors and trailers. Thisresulted in the development of moretriaxle trailers, air brake systems, optional air suspension, wheelchoices, rollover covers, ABS brakesand further hydraulic systems formany functions.

Today, the range of productsincludes car trailers (general purpose, flatbed, tipping and mini-digger /plant), agri tractor trailers (compacttractor, single or tandem axle drop-side, grain and silage trailers, cattle /livestock trailers and bale / flattrailers), construction trailers (tractor-drawn low, dump trailers and dump /loader trailers), truck trailers(stepframe lowloaders and drawbartrailers for rigids) as well as a fullrange of trailer and axle spares. A fullrepair and modification service isprovided and a range of used trailersis also stocked.

For the rigid truck operator, the mostpopular models are lowloaders withrear-loading ramps, from eight-tonnetandem axle on spring suspension to

24-tonne triaxle onair suspension. Alltruck-drawn trailersproduced for the EUmarket are built withABS as standard.Other standardfeatures are LEDlighting, high-visibility markingsand certified towingeyes. Loadingramps are eitherspring-loaded forsmaller models orhydraulically-liftedfor heavier trailers.Hydraulics can bepowered from thetowing vehicle orfrom a trailer-mounted electricpower pack. DooleyBros also producestrailers with a dualhitch to enablethem to be drawneither by a rigidtruck or agriculturaltractor.

“We havestandard modelswith popular options and these willusually have to be tailored somewhatin accordance with customerrequirements,” Joe confirms. “Then,

we also do complete, off-the-wall builds, which can bedesigned from the ground up.Once we have discussed theproject with our customer andagreed a price, we will get in allthe required materials and gointo production. While there isno typical job, we’ll normallyhave the trailer ready withinthree-six weeks.”

As for the future of thisexcellent concern, Joeconcludes: “There has been apick-up in agriculture and wealso hope that UK demand willimprove with the drop in thevalue of the Euro. I’m confidentthat things are going toimprove again and thisDecember / January wascertainly busier than the sameperiod last year.

“We will service all our trailersthroughout their lifetime andwe even did this during theboom times, which is standing

us in good stead now. We make apoint of refurbishing, repairing andstanding over all our trailers.

“We’ve also updated our websiteand there’s a very good selection ofour products online now which can bediscussed with myself or MartinStorey, our sales director.

“At the end of the day, this is a familybusiness and I provide a personalservice. If you buy a trailer here, youwill buy it from me and I will overseeits production and be availablethroughout the process andafterwards. That’s the advantage ofdealing directly – the customer has asmuch input into the wholemanufacturing process as he wants.”

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS46

All theSmallthingsFor over four decades, Galway-basedThomas Small & Sons has beenproviding an exceptional commercialvehicle bodybuilding service tocustomers from across the westernseaboard and beyond. Irish Truckerrecently popped into the company’shead office at Cartron, Claregalway toget an insight into the impressivehistory, current wellbeing and futureplans of this stellar operation frompersonable managing director VincentSmall.

Thomas Small & Sons, commercial vehiclebodybuilders, was

established in 1969 by theeponymous Thomas, who isstill very much involved in thecompany today, workingalongside his son, current MDVincent Small. Vincent reflectson the genesis and early daysof the successful familybusiness, which is now in itssixth decade providing

customers with a full range oftruck body modifications andrepairs:

“We started off buildingagricultural trailers for the localfarming community andevolved over the years. Myfather was asked to build sometruck bodies and he had goneinto commercial vehiclebuilding within a couple ofyears of starting out. He startedas a one-man show, with help

A fine finished product fromThomas Small & Sons

from his father, Frank Small, whowas a blacksmith by trade, andbuilt it up from there.”

One of the key strengths ofThomas Small & Sons is itscomplete versatility and flexibility. They can build a body onto literallyany chassis, always offering abespoke, custom-built finish toexact customer specifications. Nojob is too big or too small and everybody is built in accordance with theclient’s precise requirements, withtotal transparency through allstages of the design andmanufacture process.

“Basically, a customer will comeinto us with the truck and they willusually have specificcustomisations and requirementsand we will achieve these at alltimes. This is very important. In ourline of work, you have to be able togive the customer exactly what hewants. To this end, we offer a one-stop shop and will complete the fulljob from start to finish here on site.”

Thomas Small & Sons covers thewest mainly but has built trucks forclients nationwide, including tilt andslide recovery bodies, tippingbodies, livestock bodies, theremoval and refitting of truckbodies and cranes. We stillproduce a certain amount of agri-trailers for the agricultural industry.

“We build what the customerwants onto any manufacturedchasis and if we feel the job is notin our remit, we won’t take in on forthe sake of taking it on.”

There is no such thing as a typicalday at the workshop in Cartran.Every day presents a new set of

challenges and the bodybuildingteam is able to deal with every jobpresented:

“Every day at Thomas Small &Sons is different,” Vincentconfirms. “There is no such thingas a typical job. All of ourtechnicians are multi-skilled andeach man would have a variety ofspecialist skills because theyhave to multitask betweenwelding, electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, painting etc. Weemploy a total of five and they areall really skilled guys, as you canimagine.

“We specialise in recoveryvehicles, large and small, but alljobs vary and a large part of itwould be modifications and / orrepairs, where guys come into uswith older bodies or systems andwe will fix it up or modernise it. Wecan completely refurbish the truckbody. Also, because of the waythe economy is and the lack offunds at people’s disposal, peopleare more likely to refurbish a 10-year-old truck than to purchase anew one. One of the areas wespecialise in is a changeover, or‘swap and re-fit’, where we takethe body off one chassis and fit itonto another.”

Over the years, Thomas Small &Sons always provided anunrivalled level of customer care.By looking after the needs ofcustomers at all times, they havebuild up a generation of goodwilland loyalty, which is standingthem in good stead during thesechallenging economic times.

“We’re very versatile and

flexible. We will take on any job, large or small, and we havenever turned our noses up at anybody. During the boomtimes, when there was plenty of work for everybody, wenever turned away the smaller jobs and that is really payingdividends for us now.

“We have a massive amount of repeat business from theloyal customer base that we have built up over the years.

Some of them would be second-generation businesscoming back – the sons of men who had work done by myfather.”

Thus, the MD is relieved to be in a position to report thatThomas Small & Sons remains largely unscathed by therecession thus far. So much so that there are plans forexpansion: “The workshop was built ten years ago when Itook over and we plan to add an extension next year,” saysVincent.

“We have the capacity to build any kind of truck and we willdo everything from the actual metal fabrication to thepainting, all in-house. We could be working on a cattle truck, from top to bottom, one day and then on a brand new tilt andslide the next day.” Some of the trucks have even beenexported as far afield as Australia!

“We pride ourselves in the fact that every job is hands-on,”Vincent concludes. “I will go through every request andexplain exactly what can be done and I will makesuggestions and offer advice to point customers in the rightdirection. At the end of the day, we have decades ofexperience and we knowwhat we’re doing.

“There’s no passingthe buck. The buckstops with me and I amavailable to talk tocustomers 24 / 7.Everything is upfrontand we provide apersonal service, which people reallyappreciate.”

MaintainingLimerick’s roadsFor over ten years now, Pat O’Neill has been working with the LimerickCounty Council to help maintain the roads of the Treaty County. IrishTrucker found out more about Pat’s role with the Council and their extensivemachinery fleet.

These days not too many wouldswap their job for someone withthe responsibility of maintaining

the roads of an entire county, particularly between the December andMarch months.

However, Pat O’Neill and his team inthe Limerick County Council have beendoing it successfully for over a decadenow and when we spoke to him wasgearing up for another stiff winter.

“I’m here with the Limerick Co Councilsince October 2001,” explained Pat.“We would have about 120 outdoorstaff and my position here is SeniorEngineer for Transportation.

“I’m responsible for 400,000km ofroads in Limerick along with the winterservice plan and floods serviceplanning. Basically what we do iseverything to do with roadtransportation in county Limerick and

making sure that they are safe andsecure for the drivers and thepedestrians that use them.”

The last couple of winters have sawPat and his colleagues being put to thetest as record low temperatures frozemany parts of the country and Limerickwas no exception. Roads were highlyhazardous during December andJanuary of 2010 and the LimerickCounty Council did their utmost to try

A well maintainedartic and trailer

and ensure drivers’ safety inthe icy conditions.

2012 is likely to see theCouncil again having to be onits toes during the early monthsand again at the end of theyear for November andDecember, but Pat explainedthat his job is one whichrequires heavy responsibilityall year round.

This past December, Patstated: “The next few weeksand month are going to be verybusy for us. A lot of our work usvery weather dependant, but atthe same time the line of workthat we’re in means that wecan be busy at any time ofyear.”

In 2008, Pat and co weredealt a set-back during theearly stages of the winter whenflash floods hit Newcastlewest.Pat admitted that it took a longtime for the town to sufficientlyrecover from the problem, withsome areas still greatlyaffected from the damagewhich was caused.

“It took years to recover fromthe Newcastlewest flash floodsin 2008 and they were followedby severe winters in 2008 and2009,” he stated.

The winters that followed in2009 and 2010 were amongstthe harshest ever seen in Irishhistory and Pat explained thatthe Council have learned fromthe ultra experience which sawtemperatures drop to recordlows in this country.

However, he admitted that cutbacks within his departmenthave had the affect that they

were expected to have, withone fifth of the staff from2008 making way.

“We have over 4,000tonnes of salt in preparationfor this coming winter, but weare well down in staffnumbers,” he said.

“In the last year there hasbeen a 20 per cent decreasein our staff has beenbecause of the cut backs. Ithas had an affect and wewould rather have thoseemployees still with it, butwith the times that are in itwe just have to get on withour duties.”

Despite the recentreduction in staff, Pat’sdepartment still boasts anextensive fleet to help themsufficiently deal with the day-to-day work that’s carriedout.

The fleet is more than wellequipped to deal with the icyproblems which arise duringthe winter, as well as thetypical work which goes onall year round.

“We’d have eight largegritters, six snow plowswhich are used for roadreconstruction in the winter,”explained the LimerickCounty Council’s SeniorEngineer for Transportation.

“We also have seven minigritters for foot in case of icewhich is a real danger forpaths for pedestrians. Thenormal fleet consists of sixtar-patching trucks, fiverollers, seven three-axltrucks, six 10-tonne trucks

and 32 pick-ups.” “In total we’d have 97 items of machinery here,” he added. There’s no question that Pat and his colleagues operate a

very capable fleet, which helps them to do what they do sosufficiently, but recent years have saw one key element toany fleet take its toll with regards to cost maintenance.

The rise in fuel costs has hit companies nationwide veryhard in recent years and Pat’s department hasn’t been anydifferent. Running costs for their machinery have increasedand, in turn, has had an affect on maintaining the fleet.

“When you look at what’s involved with maintenance, there’s labour and material, but it’s the cost of runningmachinery which has rocketed in the last couple of years,”Pat said.

“There’s a lot of pressure on machinery now because theyare very fuel dependant and the cost of fuel now means thateveryone is doing more for less. Hopefully, sooner ratherthan later, the costs will come down so everybody canbenefit but it’s hard to see ithappening any time soon,to be honest.”

He added: “The biggestchallenge now is to havethe resources to meet thedemands. It’s all aboutpersonnel more thananything and there’s nodoubt that it is going toget tougher.”

EngineeringsuccessThe quarry industry may have suffered greatly since the demise of the CelticTiger, but when a company produces a quality product, there is always ademand.

One such business thatproduces high quality productsis Dungannon based PM

Engineering Ltd and this Co Tyrone firmhas gone from strength to strength in itsfield of expertise.

For this month's edition of IrishTrucker, we profile this Northern Irishfirm and speak to Design ManagerKingsley Willis about the products theymanufacture.

PM Engineering Ltd was establishedby Patsy Mulgrew and Father MickeyMulgrew in 1991 and through hardwork and dedication has grown intoone of the most modern andprogressive engineering companies inNorthern Ireland.

With an experienced andknowledgeable team, this business hasthe expertise and know-how to performany engineering job, even though theirmain focus is on the quarry industry.

PM Engineering Ltd specializes in thedesign and manufacture of highperformance, custom built equipmentindividually produced to suit the

customer's specific requirements.“Most of our work revolves around the

quarry industry, but we also focus onthe peat and concrete industries, aswell as other private work which wecarry out,” said Kingsley.

“We work with the client from start tofinish and ensure to deliver the highstandard that they expect and we try toexceed the expectations of ourcustomers where possible.”

PM Engineering manufactures heavysteel structures for the quarry andmining industry and they offer a fullturnkey service or supply only, depending on the customers'requirements.

“We take into consideration what thecustomer requires from their plant andfrom this we would produce an initialdesign concept, which is visuallydelivered to the customer, showingwhat their plant may look like once ithas been completed and how it willperform. When we have come to anagreement on the specifics of the plant,we would then offer a quotation of

works to the customer. Once thecustomer is happy with the design andquotation, we then proceed to the nextphase, which is the detailed design andmanufacturing stage of their product. For the quarry industry, most designsare generally different as all quarriesare different in size and layout.

“A typical plant would involvecomplete design, manufacture andinstallation of crushing and screeningequipment. It can incorporate primarycrushing, feeding, and supply tostockpile, storage bins and recyclingsystems to suit the customer's specificrequirements, considering all producttypes and sizes.

“We have a great design team here, who are able to produce an outstandingportfolio of complete, stand alonestructures, for feeders, jaw crushers, impact crushers, cone crushers, vibrating screens, washing andintegrated configurations.”

Kingsley revealed that the only part ofthe product that is not done by them isthe electrical work, which is subbed

out; otherwise, the team at PMmanufactures everything.

Such is the experience that thecompany has gained over the years, their customer base has also expandedto all across the U.K and Ireland.

“PM Engineering Ltd directly controlseach and every step of the projectthrough a modular, integratedapproach. By staying in close contactwith our clients, from the very firstmeeting, through each service call, PMEngineering Ltd makes sure that theoutcome will be totally personalizedand satisfactory.

“Last year, we constructed a concretebatching plant in Yeovil, Somerset, inthe U.K, which produces up to 20million blocks a year. That's over90,000 concrete blocks every day. Weare busy enough at the moment, although like all other businesses, wehave suffered in the last couple ofyears.

“We have a fleet of vans all overIreland and parts of the UK, lookingafter the maintenance and support of allour products, of which this end of thebusiness would be very busy. Ourservice is always coupled with acomprehensive back-up service, thusproviding a top quality product andensuring great value for money.”

P M Engineering's range of batchingplants caters for the ready mixconcrete, precast concrete and mortarindustries, covering a broad spectrumof requirements. With storagecapacities and throughputs extendingfrom low level, shovel fed, portablebatcher, which can be easily relocatedfrom site to site, up to high capacitymulti-purpose static plants.

“Alongside the batching plantoperation we design and manufacturestorage bins, conveyor systems andeven peat processing plants.”

PM prides itself on meeting thedemands of the customer and theirreliability to deliver a top quality producthas been the basis for their successover the years.

“As a professional company, ourreputation for outstanding customerservice is second to none. We willmatch our expertise and productiontechnology to the customer's individualrequirements and we can provideequipment you can rely on forefficiency, economy and strength.”

PM Engineering Ltd employs 30people, meaning it is a significantemployer in the area, all of who are

highly trained and dedicated to theirroles, meaning that each customer canrest assured that all tasks are carriedout with the utmost care and precision.”

PM Engineering Ltd has a number ofcranes at their disposal for hire. Eachcrane will be supplied with its own fullyqualified operator. All cranes suppliedwill be fully certified.

“We provide a full contract liftingservice which relieves you of theresponsibility for preparing a methodstatement, risk assessment, managingand supervising the lifting operation -thus ensuring that the lifting operationfully complies with BS7121.”

The company also has a spares andrepair department that gives customersthe peace of mind that parts can be attheir premises sooner rather than later.

Wicklow County Council boastan extensive Volvo fleet

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS68

Wicklow’s reliablesComing up on 10 years of involvement with the Wicklow County Council,Pat Clarke talked to Irish Trucker about his role as its Senior ExecutiveEngineer and what it takes to help keep the Garden County’s roads safe allyear round.

The Machinery Yard supply theplant, drivers and equipment tohelp maintain the county’s

roads, all year round and this is no easyfeat by any means, but somehow PatClarke and his department within theWicklow County Council havecontinued to make it work for almost adecade now.

Not too many would have swappedtheir job for Pat’s when it came tomaintaining safety on Wicklow’s roads

over the past two winters, but it is onethat he relishes and also takes pride inas he recently explained to us.

“Our office is in Wicklow town and myposition is acting Senior ExecutiveEngineer,” explained Pat.

“I’ve been here since 2002 and Isuppose our main role is to maintainthe machinery yard, where we hire outthe fleet, to the variousdepartments/areas, Roads, Housing,Environment, etc. We’re totally self-

financing here and are the same as amini plant hire firm for the Council, youcould say.” We must like any firm justifyour existence by making a profit eachyear, which is used to keep the fleetupdated.

2012 sees Pat coming into the tenthyear in his role with County Council andwhile he admits that times are gettingtougher, he also believes that there islight at the end of the tunnel.

These past few years have never

been as busy for Pat andhis resourcefuldepartment, particularlythe past two winterswhich have saw recordlow temperaturesfreezing the country andleaving its roadsextremely hazardous attimes.

“We’re busy all yearround,” he stated.“During the summer ourwe’re looking after thesurface dressing ofroads and in the winterwe are doing our best tomake sure that the roadsare safe and gritted toprevent accidents.”

“Last year, we wereextremely busy with theway the roads were inNovember, Decemberand then as well intoJanuary and this yearwe’re well prepared formore of the same if thetemperature happens todrop to the same levelsagain. The staff werebrilliant.”

Like any job, Pat hashad to learn from hisexperiences downthrough the years andhe acknowledges that ithas proved priceless tohim on occasions. A CivilEngineer by profession,he comes from ahaulage back round sotrucks are in his blood.

With almost 20 staffworking with him in theMachinery Yard, plus 10staff within the DirectLabour Unit (whichcarries out civilengineering projectsaround the county) andan extensive fleet tocover the length andbreathe of the countywhich is divided by theWicklow Mountains, itstill can be difficult. Hemust co ordinate andmanage the twosections simultaneously.

“We have about 16drivers driving the largertrucks, 3 fitters and one

foreman within theMachinery Yard,” said Pat.

“We also get more truckdriving staff from differentdepartments during thebusy seasons, butretirements and the banon recruitment are makingthings harder and harderfor everyone. The smallerplant is driven by the Areastaff themselves.

We have a fleet of wellover 120 vehicles, consisting of vans, jeeps, crew cab pick ups,18-tonne tipper trucks alongwith 6x4 and 8 x 4 tippertrucks, with all the largetrucks capable of carryingdemountable frost grittersand snow ploughs. Wealso have tractor units, rollers, teleporters andmany other single manoperating machines.” “Weonly had a fleet of 30vehicles when I took overin 2002.”

He added: “Our maindepartments we supplyplant and equipment towithin Wicklow CountyCouncil would be Roads,Environment and Housing. They’re the three mainsections we have and, as Isaid, we don’t get abudget, so we are entirelyself-sufficient.”

Being self-sufficient isn’tan easy business to be innowadays, particularlywhen you are trying tomaintain an extensivevehicle fleet while dieselprices are at an all timehigh.

Pat agrees with the point, but says there’s little heand his valuable outfit cando other than to push onand hope for better times.

“It’s like anything, we’rejust pushing ourexpenditure down, tryingto get the best value formoney and trying to take iton the chin like everyoneelse,” said the chiefengineer for WicklowCounty CouncilsMachinery Yard

The Machinery Yard has found goodvalue for money in purchasing secondhandvehicles over the past few years and thishas helped replace vehicles “at the end oftheir life” without spending a fortune. Everybit counts.

“When hiring out the plant we have tomake sure our prices are competitive andadhere to the Departments guidelines inrelation to the hire rates for all plant”.

Such is the nature of business, but Patknows that they have gained a strongreputation through the reliable serviceprovided over the last decade and theyplan to continue to do so.

“We must maintain a good fleet asbreakdowns will affect the productivity ofthe staff using the equipment and ourcustomers within Wicklow County Councilwont be happy”

The last few years have saw a few newaspects introduced as well, which havehelped raise the profile, as Pat explained.

“We have our own workshop and our ownfitters, and it is important as we canrespond quickly to all breakdowns on ourown plant. We also look after all the fire

“As I said, we have our ownworkshop here in Wicklowtown and do our own serviceand repairs on our trucks andother vehicles. We havesteadily improved theworkshop facility over theyears with the introduction ofa 26tn mobile somers garagelift, which helps when workingon low entry fire appliances. We also look after themaintenance and repairs onsome treatment plants inWicklow, as well as ourdepartment inspecting VTNTesting Centres around thecounty.”

Both the Machinery Yardand the Direct Labour Unit arealways extremely busy andwe have excellent staff withinboth sections and I am happyto be a part of this veryimportant team which keepsWicklow moving.

As easy as T&COffering unbeatable value in Peugeot commercial vehicles and passengercars, T&C Motors Ltd. is celebrating over 30 years operating in Waterfordcity. Irish Trucker visited the company premises on Inner Ring Road to getan insight into their award-winning products, eye-catching promotions andstellar services from general manager Keith Cullinane.

With more than Thirty yearssince arriving in Waterfordcity, T&C Motors Ltd. has

developed into one of the county’spremier motor dealerships. This hasn’thappened by chance; providingcustomers with exceptional productsand an unbeatable back-up service,T&C has deservedly forged areputation for excellence. The mainPeugeot dealership is weathering theeconomic storm and all the signs areencouraging that this model businesswill continue to thrive for years, naydecades, to come.

T&C Motors was originallyestablished in Kilkenny in 1979 butrelocated to The Quay in Waterford cityin 1981. It was a small set-up in thoseembryonic days, essentially comprisingone showroom, a workshop andforecourt petrol pumps. On the back ofits policy of providing unrivalled levelsof customer care, demand for T&C’sservices increased annually and, in1999, the operation moved to itspresent site - a purpose-built, state-of-the-art showroom on Inner Ring Road.

The showroom was revamped in2006, to accommodate eight vehicles,

and other refurbishment work to takeplace at the time included widening theforecourt and an expansion of theservice area.

This left T&C in good shape for thechallenges that lay ahead, though, infairness, nobody could have predictedthe nationwide (and global) economicdownturn that was to follow. Therecession has taken its toll oneverybody and the motor trade countsamongst the worst-affected sectors, butT&C’s proud tradition of looking after itscustomers is standing it in good stead,as general manager Keith Cullinane

reveals:“It is a challenging time but we

do benefit from a lot ofCustomer loyalty, who havebought from us in the past andcontinued to support us. We’rehoping that perhaps we arestarting to turn the corner. Two-thousand-and-nine was avolatile year but things havepicked up slightly since. In2010, business increased andit grew again in the first fewmonths of 2011 due to theGovernment scrappagesupport.

“We anticipate 2012 will be ona par 2011 and we look forwardto the challenge ahead.”

T&C Motors is the mainPeugeot dealer forWaterford city andcounty, as u b s t a n t i a lcatchment area,and is definitelypunching above itsweight comparedto the averagep e r f o r m a n c enationwide. T&Cmarket share isclose to treble thenational average.

“That’s a big plusand it’s very

encouraging for us,” Keithcontinues. “Again, it comesback to the loyalty of ourcustomers and greatsupport from PeugeotIreland. The product hasgone full circle now andthings changeddramatically with the arrivalof the new 3008 Crossover,5008 seven-Seater and508 Saloon whichlaunched in April 2011. AllModels are available with1.6 HDi engines and thestylish RCZ is anotherwelcome addition to thePeugeot range.

“In May / June of this year, the new208 will replace the 207 and that’sgoing to be another exciting time forPeugeot.”

The product and build quality ofPeugeot’s vehicles is exceptionallygood – not to mention the record-breaking fuel economy - and that’s whythe marque has regularly collectedsome of the industry’s most prestigiousawards. “The 3008 was voted Irish Carof the Year 2010 and What CarCrossover of the Year 2010 and 2011.The 308 1.6hdi also became worldrecord holder for best MPG in 2009,

“The 5008 was Irish Family Car of theYear 2011 and the 508 was voted FleetWorld’s Best New Car 2011 and IrishFamily Car of the Year 2012. The RCZwas Irish Performance Car of the Year

2011.”And readers of this magazine will be

only too well aware of the excellentcommercial vehicle range offered byPeugeot, comprising the Partner, theExpert and the Boxer. The LGV marketis extremely important to T&C Motors.“The Partner van is a fabalous sellerand it has exceeded all expectations.Of the three vans, this is the one that’sreally doing the business. It comes witha 1.6 HDi engine and is available ineither two- or three-seater with long-wheel or short-wheel base.

“The other two vans are in a differentmarket, really. The Expert van is athree-seater, 1.6HDi, available indifferent payloads and the 2.2HDiBoxer panel van comes with short-,medium- or long-wheel base with

standard roof or high roof. The Boxer is a very goodvan with an excellentperformance.

“We have a commercialvehicle centre here as aseparate part of the overallbusiness and this includesa very good aftersalesdepartment forcommercials. We also havea demo vehicle here at alltimes for customerconvenience.

“The vans are holding upreasonably well but it’s avery tough market at themoment. Again, as with thecars, loyalty plays amassive part, this again isattributable to our loyalcustomer base. Theservice department is alsovital with commercialvehicles and aftersalesservice has to be second tonone. You have to treatyour customers very welland this is something wehave been very muchaware of since we set thebusiness up.”

promotions and these arehelping to keep customerscoming through the doors. Inthe current climate, a littleimagination goes a long wayand Keith and his team cannotbe found wanting in thisdepartment.

The first promotion is TheService Club, which offersmembers every fourth servicefree of charge - a great way toensure customer loyalty. “Ourservice manager and ouraftersales manager have bothbeen here for over 30 yearsand we’re pleased that theloyalty of our staff has been ona par with the loyalty of ourcustomers,” says the generalmanager.

Up until March 31st, T&CMotors is also offering 4%APR on selected models inthe Peugeot range.

In the commercialdepartment, they are runninga scrappage allowance, which willoffer EUR4,000 off the price of a newPartner van and EUR6,000 off thecost of a new Boxer. [All these pricesand promotions were correct at thetime of going to press.]

Keith concludes by confirming thatthis long-serving business is in goodhands: “We have managed to holdour own these past few years. It’s

been tight and it’s been hard butwe’ve continued to provide a qualityservice at an affordable price and stafflevels here have remained steady. Westill employ 14 people and all ourexperienced mechanics and salesstaff have stuck with us. We have agreat selection of new and used carsand vans, an excellent track record, and we are in a strong position goingforward.”
