(Beeswing, continued from page 1.) and her eloquent and spritely touch on the banjo were cemented after three years living in County Cork, Ireland, where she soaked up lots of great music at festivals and ses-sions. After many years as a musi-cal anchor and regular performer in the mountains of North Caro-lina, Jeanne has settled in historic Charleston, South Carolina. Fiddler and singer Andi Hearn has spent more than 20 years learning Irish fiddle music from the tradi-tion's very best music exponents. Along the way, she has also col-lected and studied songs from the vast unaccompanied "sean-nos" ballad tradition of Ireland, as well as solo songs from all over the world. Her vocal style is as rich and hearty as her fiddle tunes. From her home in Columbia, South Carolina, she founded and directs the Redbird School of Irish Music to share traditional Irish music with her community. Celtic musicians, bring your in-struments and join Margaret, Jeanne, and Andi in a session af-ter the concert! Feel the buzz of Beeswing! Learn more here: www.beeswingmusic.com. Long-time CFS favorite Joe New-berry is coming to Charlotte for a house concert on Saturday, April 9th! Hosted by Teagarden House Concerts in a South Charlotte home, the concert begins at 7 PM. Guests are invited to bring a dish to share and the beverage of their choice for a potluck at 6 PM. Ad-mission is $15; all monies benefit the artist. Space is limited. Advanced reserva-tions and payment are re-quired. Email to make res-ervations and payment and receive directions: [email protected]. Learn about upcoming concerts at http://teagardenhouseconcerts.org. Joe Newberry is a Missouri native and North Carolina transplant who has played music most of his life. A fre-quent guest on Garrison Keil-lor's A Prairie Home Companion, Joe performs in a duo with Mike Compton, and also performs with guitarist Jon Shain. Another special side project pairs Joe with old-time music legends Bill Hicks, Mike Craver, and Jim Watson. The four-some plays to enthusiastic audi-ences around the country as often as their busy individual schedules permit. A noted teacher of traditional mu-sic and song, Joe has taught at nu-merous camps and festivals, in-cluding Ashokan, Pinewoods Camp, Vocal Week and Old-Time Week at the Augusta Heritage Center, the Australia National Folk Festival, the Blue Ridge Old-Time Music Week, and the Bluff Coun-try Gathering. He was for many years the coordinator of Old-Time

Week at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV. Joe won the songwriting prize for Gospel Recorded Performance at the 2012 IBMA Awards for his song Singing As We Rise, and was co-writer, with Eric Gibson, of the 2013 IBMA Song of the Year for They Called It Music.

Joe grew up in a family full of singers and dancers. He took up the guitar and banjo as a teenager and learned fiddle tunes from great Missouri fiddlers. He came to North Carolina as a young man and quickly became an anchor of the incredible music scene in the state. Still going strong more than 30 years later, he writes songs that consistently show up on Blue-grass charts, does solo and studio work, and plays and teaches at festivals and workshops in North America and abroad. Joe Newberry has performed at CFS Gatherings several times through the years - with Julee Glaub, with Mike Compton, and as a member of Craver, Hicks, Watson & Newberry - always to appreciative and enthusiastic

By Greg Clarke

I have been hosting a Charlotte Folk Society Bluegrass Jam at 6:30 PM every Sunday night at Tommy’s Pub for almost two years. Due to the impending demolition of Tommy’s to make way for con-dos, the Bluegrass Jam has moved to the Fireside Room at St. Stephen Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Road (just south of light at Boyce Road), in Charlotte. There is an outside entrance to the Fireside Room at the north end of the church. There is a sign at the en-trance in the front parking lot.

We never know who will show up, but we play a variety of popular and unusual bluegrass, country, folk, gospel, and old-time tunes. If you like to hear acoustic music or perhaps participate, stop by the Fireside Room. Call Greg Clarke 704-236-1111 for details. The second weekend in April, we will be jamming on Saturday, April 9th, at 2 PM at Reedy Creek Nature Center, 2900 Rocky River Road, Charlotte 28215. We will join forces with other groups. Please invite your friends. We will not jam on Sunday, April 10th. Sunday night jams at St. Stephen United Methodist Church resume on Sunday, April 17th. All are welcome!

FOLK CALENDAR

Ed Gebauer You have two opportunities in April to take part in the CFS monthly Slow Jam! The first will be following the Gathering on Friday, April 8th, up on the third floor of the Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Avenue, in Uptown Charlotte. This jam is led by fiddler Alan Davis. Free parking is available in the 4th Street county deck. You’ll take a ticket when you enter, but after 8 PM the exits are open and there is no charge for evening parking. Then, again, on Saturday, April 16th, at 12 Noon, indoors in the 1890s Ashcraft Schoolhouse at the Carl J. McEwen Historic Village, located at 7601 Matthews-Mint Hill Road (Route 51) in down-town Mint Hill, North Carolina. Note: In keeping with the histori-cal and compact nature of the mu-seum property, this setting is not idel for pets, amplified instru-ments, or unattended children. We’ll do an hour of tunes in the announced key featuring the tunes listed on the CFS Slow Jam web page (link below). But when we’re finished, the regular Mint Hill Old-Time Jam starts up, and we can keep on playing! Still casual! Welcoming! Still the best way ever to get started playing your instrument. You can learn all about the Char-lotte Folk Society Slow Jams by visiting our website at www.

folksociety.org/slowjam.shtml. There you'll find all the music we play as well as mp3 files you can download and, with your instru-ment, play along. In April, we’ll be playing in the key of D! If you're new to the idea of an Old-Time Instrumental Slow Jam, here are the particulars! The groups meeting second Fridays following Gatherings and on third Saturdays in Mint Hill are led by local fiddlers. These meetings are where beginning players of all acoustic instruments are intro-duced to old-time dance tunes at a gentle pace. This is the place to start learning to jam with other players after learning those first few chords on your guitar or banjo, or your first tune on your lead instrument. If you have questions, please get in touch with Ed Gebauer at [email protected] or Alan Davis at [email protected].

The Mint Hill Old-Time Music Jam meets monthly on third Satur-days, now that the Farmers’ Mar-ket has ended. Join us on Satur-day, April 16th. Jams begin at 1 PM and wrap up at 3 PM. Jams are open and acoustic and take place in the 1890s Ashcraft School-house at the Carl J. McEwen His-toric Village, located at 7601 Mat-thews-Mint Hill Road (Route 51) in downtown Mint Hill, and run by the Mint Hill Historical Society. Newcomers are always welcome.

If you would enjoy an extra hour of jamming, come at 12 Noon for the Charlotte Folk Society Slow Old-Time Jam, also in the Ashcraft Schoolhouse. Tunes are always in the same key as the Slow Old-Time Jam at the monthly CFS Gathering. Visit www.folksociety.org for more Slow Jam information. Contact Jack Hopkins at 704-545-4290 or 704-620-5086 for information.

With fond memories of its founder, Bill Williams, the Willow Grove Jam continues to meet on the first Satur-day of each month from 2 PM to 4 PM. Co-hosted by Charlotte Folk Society members Alan Davis and Tom Kelleher, the open jam takes place in the Activities Room at the Willow Grove Retirement Center, located at 10043 Idlewild Road, Mat-thews, North Carolina. All are in-vited to the next jam on Saturday, May 7th. The format for this unplugged jam is a play-around, like a song circle, where each person chooses a tune or song. It can be anything from gos-pel, bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, or Americana in genre. The audience varies from ten to forty residents and guests. For more information, con-tact Alan Davis at [email protected] or 704-499-3918.

evening starting at 7:30 and going until 9:30 or 10:00. I live near W. T. Harris Boulevard and The Plaza in Charlotte. The basic tune set used by the Char-lotte Folk Society will be the basis for tunes, at least initially. Anyone may introduce tunes not on the ba-sic set list, provided that they sub-mit sheet music and a sound track (or a link to one) well in advance. Both will be sent to everyone else, and we won’t try to learn a lot of tunes at once. Although playing from sheet music is acceptable, one of our goals will be to wean our-selves from the page and develop an ear for Irish music and its style. If you are interested in coming, email me at [email protected]. I will send you information on how to get to my house, and include your name on the session mailing list.

The Slow Session meets on the sec-ond Sunday of each month, 2-5 PM, in the Asbury Senior Care Center Chapel at Aldersgate Retirement Community, 3800 Shamrock Drive (between Eastway Drive and Sharon Amity Road), in East Charlotte. Turn off Shamrock Drive on to Willard Farrow Road at the light. The guard at the entry gate can di-rect you to the right building. The next Slow Session will meet on Sunday, April 10th.

At the Regular Intermediate Session, we play from an expanded list of tunes, and it’s the place to be for working your tunes up to speed, freeing oneself from the sheet music, and adding the signature styling to the melodies that make this music so special. You can learn all about the Regular Session by visiting www.folksociety.org/celticsession.shtml.

At these website locations, you can download copies of the music we’ll play and sign up to be on the monthly email distributions that share where these sessions will be held. Or, you can contact John Goldsbury directly at [email protected].

Hope to see you there!

Each month, folks who enjoy play-ing Irish and Scottish music gather together in what are calle Celtic Music Sessions. The Charlotte Folk Society sponsors both Slow and Intermediate learner sessions for those that come and play.

dler's Grove has enjoyed a long tradition of preserving old-time and bluegrass music, and passing the legacy on to future genera-tions. On Saturday morning you'll be able to attend workshops in numerous instruments and clog-ging with the Green Grass Clog-gers and Cane Creek Cloggers. Competitions begin directly fol-lowing the workshops. The after-noon will feature a children's show. Many things take place on the Main Stage Saturday evening. You will see some special enter-tainment, clogging, and, perhaps the highlight of the evening, the Fiddler of the Festival Playoff. Also returning is the popular "Hot Licks" competition, where musicians in all instruments will compete for the title "Best Jam-mer" of the festival. This year there will be a separate Junior Hot Licks category for children. In a long-standing tradition, Sun-day morning is a lazy day of lis-tening to gospel and good music under the trees "in the Grove" - a perfect ending for the weekend. Fiddler's Grove Campground, the bucolic setting for this annual gathering of music lovers, is nicely suited for the execution and enjoyment of these great American musical traditions. The stated purpose of this festival - to preserve, promote, and perpetu-ate traditional American music - is carried out in a fashion that in-vites every ticket holder to be a part of the grand continuum. Novice or expert, listener or com-

petitor, youngster or otherwise: eve-ryone can find a niche at Fiddler's Grove. For on-going information, visit the website at www.fiddlersgrove.com, the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/FiddlersGroveINC, or contact the festival administrator at [email protected]. Note: Fiddler’s Grove is a family event. As a matter of public safety, alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs are not allowed on the grounds. Pets allowed with certain restrictions.

Festival Tickets Friday: Adults $10 Saturday: Adults $15 Sunday: Adults $5 Children 12 and under FREE all weekend. Entire Festival: Adults $25 pur-chased at the gate or after May 10th. Advance Purchase Tickets: $20/Adult; must be purchased online on or before May 10th. No tickets will be mailed. Online purchase receipt for Advance Purchase Tickets must be shown at the gate. Festival Tickets do not include camping.

RV Reservations A limited number of RV hookups are available. Visit http://fiddlersgrove.com/rvsites/ to reserve your spot. Plenty of over-flow RV camping is available at our cousin's campground 1 mile up the road.

Dry Camping Dry camping is available in several areas of the campground. There are no defined sites for this, and these do not include water or electric hook-ups. $15/Site/Night (Family is 2 adults and children)

93rd Ole Time Fiddler’s & Bluegrass Festival at Union Grove

May 27-29, 2016 In 1924, H.P. Van Hoy, a school-teacher and fiddler, thought of an innovative way to raise money for Union Grove School; he would hold a fiddler's convention. The convention became a tradition, car-ried on in recent years by Harper A. Van Hoy, H. P. Van Hoy's son. On May 27-29, 2016, the fourth generation of Van Hoy descen-dents will open the gate for the 93rd iteration of that acclaimed musical institution: a weekend of competition, performances by in-vited musicians, workshops, jam-ming, and the renewal of years-long friendships. This is the old-est fiddler's contest in North America, acclaimed a “Local Leg-acy by the Library of Congress, icon of the genre, and not to be missed. Details are available at www.fiddlersgrove.com. The weekend kicks off on Friday evening. The audience will hear from past winners and legendary musicians. Special entertainers for the weekend include performers with strong ties to this festival: The Cockman Family, Master Fid-dler Robin Warren, Danny Wicker and Mel Jones, The Wicker Pickers, The Shiver Show, The Edwards Family, and many more. The festival has joined forces with the Green Grass Clog-gers and Cane Creek Cloggers to add to the music with a Barn Dance. Saturday offers a day of competi-tion for musicians in individual categories, Junior Bands, and, re-turning this year, Senior Bands. This emphasis on youth competi-tion is in keeping with the mission of the festival. Since 1924, Fid-

(African drum). There are also less common stringed instruments like Irish lap harps, tenor banjos and even a bowed psaltery. Feel free to experiment with something unor-thodox! The library is always accepting do-nations. Any such instrument should be of high enough quality and in good enough repair that it will not frustrate a beginner. But it need not be in perfect condition.

Guitars, banjos, mando-lins, fiddles, etc., are in high de-mand and get the most attention. However, there are more non-stringed instruments in the library than you might ex-pect. By Diana Wade The CFS Songwriter’s Workshop will meet at the April 8th Gather-ing, following the Beeswing con-cert. It is for beginners as well as advanced songwriters wanting to share their music with a group that shares their passion for songwrit-ing. We will meet in the hallway by the second floor elevator. Anyone can bring a song to share. The number of people who will be able to share will depend on when we get started (after everyone has cleared the entrance of the church) and whether they want their song to be critiqued. If you want your song critiqued, bring copies of your lyrics for everyone to read. The main goal of the CFS Song-writer's Workshop is to help carry on the tradition of music and song-writing within our community. This is open to all ages. The elder songwriters can share their experi-ences and stories from days gone by through their music as the younger talents bring new aware-ness and perspective to the time-honored tradition of songwriting. We will all learn from each other. And after all, isn't that what music is all about? For more information, please email Diana Wade at [email protected].

Great Aunt Stella Center Lost & Found

If you’ve lost an item while attend-ing a concert at the Great Aunt Stella Center, please call Mark Ponischil, the Facility Manager, at 704-944-6014 and leave a message. We give all found items to Mark. His earliest opportunity to look into your inquiry will be the Tuesday following our Gathering. Please do not simply come to the Stella Cen-ter to ask about lost objects, as there is no one else in the building who would be aware of what has been found and Mark is not on site daily. He will arrange with you a time to come and pick up your lost belong-ings.
