Inside this issue: The Irish Music and Dance Association is pleased to honor and remember Tim ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald by making a very special opportunity available to two young bagpipers. This year two young pipers will attend the prestigious Balmoral School of Piping through the IMDA Educational Grant Program. Normally pipers must travel to Pittsburgh to take advantage of the outstanding instruction offered by the Balmoral School. This summer, the Balmoral is offering instruction locally at Macalester College. The students will spend a full week in small group instruction, learning from some of the best piping instructors in the world. The two pipers are Anthony Howe, a sophomore from Somerset, WI who pipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band and Silas Ohman, an eighth grader from Long Lake who pipes with the Minnesota Police Pipe Band. Both of these outstanding young men have worked to master a very challenging instrument and both have received the highest recommendation from their Pipe Majors. Both expect to learn a great deal in their week with Balmoral and expect to bring their new expertise back to help improve their bands. Anthony plays several other instruments, including guitar, sax, tin whistle, and harmonica, as well as making time for varsity soccer. He became interested in the pipes in part because of his Scottish heritage and in part because he felt confident that he could use his “good ear” to take on another instrument. Anthony has competed at the Minnesota Scottish Fair band competitions with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band and has enjoyed seeing the band increase their playing ability every year. Two years ago he competed solo in Grade IV and took first place. Anthony has also successfully taught bagpipe lessons thru the Boru to many students, some well over twice his age. At the Balmoral School, Anthony hopes to gain insight on playing traditional bagpipe music and to further his competition skills. Silas started playing the pipes two and a half years ago, working through the different chanter lesson levels, and began on the pipes last summer. Silas now practices with the Grade 5 Pipe Band and will be competing with them at the Highland Games in Farmington. Silas became interested in the pipes when he was about 6 or 7 and heard them at a library presentation (and then had to wait a couple of years to be old enough to begin lessons!). He says “they were the coolest thing ever and I loved their sound from then on.” Silas also says that he once brought his pipes to school on a dare from his social studies teacher: as he played for his class, kids from all the other classes on the floor came running to hear. At the Balmoral School, Silas hopes to develop a better ear for how the music should be played, and learn how to play the bagpipes with a really steady tone. The Irish Music and Dance Association is pleased to honor and remember Tim ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald by making a very special opportunity available to two young bagpipers. This year two young pipers will attend the prestigious Balmoral School of Piping through the IMDA Educational Grant Program. Normally pipers must travel to Pittsburgh to take advantage of the outstanding instruction offered by the Balmoral School. This summer, the Balmoral is offering instruction locally at Macalester

The two pipers are Anthony Howe, a sophomore from Somerset, WI who pipes with the Brian Boru Irish Pipe Band and Silas Ohman, an eighth grader from Long Lake who pipes with the Minnesota Police Pipe Band. John Williams, the accordion player from Chicago, taught this jig at one of his workshops here in St. Paul a few years ago. John played it in a set beginning with The Battering Ram. In the book Blooming Meadows (1998), Charlie Piggott relates a story about Michael Coleman (1891-1945), the famous County Sligo fiddler who emigrated to New York. Coleman was out performing somewhere when a female admirer asked a friend to find out from the fiddler whether or not he was married. "Tell her I am," he replied. Apparently, Niccolo Paganini wasn’t the only violinist with female groupies. Coleman recorded the jig in New York in 1927, and it has appeared on many recordings since then. Usual disclaimers: Any transcription errors are my own. The notation here is not meant to be a substitute for listening. It is simply an aid to learning the tune.

Perhaps some of you took the opportunity a couple of weeks ago, to visit our Celtic cousins at the Minnesota Scottish Fair. "Scotland" is Albain in Irish, and a "Scottish person" is an Albanach. If you were doing a bit of tasting while you were there, it would not have been regular fuisce -- "Irish whiskey" (with e) -- but fuisce na hAlban, "Scotch whisky" (no e) that you were sampling.

If whiskey vs. whisky can get confusing, between Scotland and Ireland, so can "Gaelic." When I speak at community events about the Irish language, one of the most common questions I get is, "Is it Irish, or Gaelic?" To which I generally answer, "Yes." We use phrases like "speaking Irish" precisely because "Gaelic" is not specific enough. There are in fact three Gaelic languages, starting (literally) with Irish Gaelic (Gaeilge). The Scots call their version Gàidhlig (said rather like "Gallic"). There is also a version of Gaelic to be found on the Isle of Mann, in between Ireland and Scotland. Their flavor, Gaelg, sounds much like the others, but is written quite differently, so that if most people in our area were to see signs written in Manx Gaelic, they might easily mistake the language for Somali! Indeed, we occasionally hear from individuals who find a dictionary or teach-yourself course on "Gaelic" in a bookstore and grab it, only to discover, when they get home, that they have the wrong species -- usually the Scottish version -- in their hands. At any rate, you can think of the Gaelic languages as a family much like the Romance languages. The Gàidhlig the Scots speak came from Ireland originally, and, as happens within families, the different populations drifted apart until they ended up with separate languages. But as with, say, Spanish and Italian, you can still see the family resemblance. This resemblance is strong enough for some Gàidhlig and Gaeilge speakers to understand each other to some extent, and it is very evident in the written language. When dealing with spoken Irish, the similarities are most apparent when we compare Scots Gaelic with the Irish spoken in the North of Ireland. An Irish speaker from Donegal is likely to catch much

more of what a speaker of Gàidhlig says than is an Irish speaker from Connemara. While many Irish speakers just use the term Gàidhlig to refer to the language of the Scots, we can just as easily call it Gaeilge na hAlban, or "the Irish of Scotland" -- which is probably historically appropriate. (And, fair play, the Scots can call the

Irish language Gàidhlig na h-

Eireann, "the Gallic of Ireland.") If anything, by the way, Scots Gàidhlig is in even worse shape, in Scotland, than Irish Gaeilge is in Ireland. But the Scots are

making an effort of late, on several fronts, so we'll see what happens. Our tenth annual Weekend in Winona will run Friday evening, July 16, through Sunday midday, July 18, on the campus of the University of Saint Mary's in Winona, MN. We always have a lot of fun, and learn a lot at the same time, in a beautiful setting just a couple of hours south of the Twin Cities. All levels are taught, making this a great opportunity to try out the language for the very first time, or to polish the skills you may already have. And if you are new to learning Irish, this will get you into our regular Monday night classes. We are just arranging the final details about our Weekend in Winona, and you'll find everything you want to know, plus downloadable registration forms, on our web site at www.gaelminn.org. And while you're there, stay in touch by signing up for our free e-zine, The GaelMinn Gazette, with tips (in English) for studying the language, and announcements about our activities and events.

" Music to the Irish is a living delight, a mysterious key to a host of undiscovered emotions

hoarded in the secrets of the soul." Mairtin Byrnes

Each month, a local musician serves as your “cú ceoil”, or “music hound”, and recommends

music that they especially enjoy. It might be an old favorite or perhaps a new recording.

Cormac O’Se on piano accordion is in high demand for feisianna (Irish dance competitions)

around the country as well as directing O’Shea Irish Dance.

The Co. Antrim based band, Beoga (the Irish word for ‘Lively’) are wearing out my cd player in the car these days. Their latest release ‘The Incident’ is their third album since they formed in 2002.

Their sound lies firmly within the Irish traditional music but they are not afraid to incorporate other genres into their music like jazz and blues. The five-piece band includes the twin dueling accordions of Sean Og Graham and Damian McKee, four-time All-Ireland bodhran champion Eamon Murray, pianist and keyboard player Liam Bradley, and singer Niamh Dunne.

Damien, Liam and Sean Og grew up around the Irish dance world as did I and all cut their teeth playing for feisieanna around Ireland and later around the UK and USA. I first came across them as a band at their debut CD release at the World Irish Dancing Championships in Belfast in 2004. I was absolutely blown away by them. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. These amazing tunes on the two boxes are driven by Eamon’s unbelievable beats on the bodhran and then embellished with Liam’s funky piano and keyboard.

Their music is so rhythm oriented, fun to listen to, strays away from the traditional form but yet you can still appreciate the quality of the traditional music in there.

Their debut album ‘a lovely madness’ was released in 2004 and gained them tremendous attention both in Ireland and abroad. In 2006, they followed up with ‘Mischief’ (my favorite) which is a fitting title because that’s exactly what it is – pure mischief!! This latest recording ‘The Incident’ takes Irish music to a place none have ever taken it to before.

Have a listen, It’s fast, it’s lively, It’s funky, It’s fresh, I hope you’ll love it. I do…… I believe all three albums are available at Irish on Grand here in the twin cities and at major music retailers nationwide.

Ancestors and Others: New and Selected Stories by Fred Chappell 2010 MacMillan, hardcover

reviewed by Sherry Ladig

For the past six months or so in this column, I have been reviewing books written exclusively by Irish or Irish-American authors. This month I will diverge from that practice by reviewing North Carolina author Fred Chappell, a master storyteller in the best tradition of the American South. Why American and not Irish? Because the best of the Scots-Irish storytelling tradition lives on today in the South; a tradition which goes back at least 250 years. American Southern writers are who they are, and tell their stories the way they do, because of their Celtic roots. Ask anyone from the South, and they will tell you that storytelling in that neck of the woods is considered a high art form. Southern storytellers are Celtic shanachies in disguise; their stories are organic, often convoluted, and deeply archetypical. I love reading well-written short stories. The pace and focus differs from novels; they are

masterpieces on a small scale when deftly done. And, a plus for summer months freighted with interruptions, travel, and holiday weekends, a story collection is served up in manageable portions. A story takes only fifteen to forty minutes to read. When I read Fred Chappell's work, I hear echoes of a very old Celtic tradition. He frequently combines magical realism with the most ordinary lives and circumstances; he trusts us, his readers, to stay with him for the ride, and he creates characters we readily identify with. For example, in the title story, Ancestors, the author contemplates the effect on one couple of bringing back, for three weeks apiece, three of the family's Civil War ancestors to live with them and share war experiences. Is it a dream come true, or nightmare? What if the bureaucracy which sent them won't return your e-mails or calls regarding their "operating malfunctions"? As with Irish storytellers, Fred Chappell frequently combines comedy and tragedy to great emotional effect. You care about these people, and the fate of their ancestors who've been dead and dust for 150 years. Humankind's hopes, triumphs, fears and disappointments are timeless, whether in 2011 or 1861. Besides, these stories are just plain entertaining. Imagine yourself on a sultry Carolina night, occupying one of a row of rocking chairs filled with your friends on a broad front porch; pass over the Jack Daniels or Bushmills, and set a spell for a yarn or two. Ain't goin' nowhere, and the night is young..... Happy summer porch reading! Sherry Ladig, frequent contributor to this column, is a voracious reader, trad musician, and
