Winter IN THE
IRISH HILLSThe beauty of
Irish Hills,Michigan duringthe winter monthsis breath-taking,
all you need to do is stop for a moment and take it all in. The sceneryis beautiful with the snow gently fallingon the rolling hills. The sounds ofnature; the lakes popping and creaking during those cold days, thewind whistling through the branches ofthe snow-covered trees and the animals scurrying about trying to findwarm refuge. There are also soundsof happy families sledding and iceskating on the snow-covered hills andfrozen lakes and ponds.
Those that visit the Irish Hills haveplenty to see and do to keep themcoming back, even during the wintermonths. The Irish Hills hosts many icefishing tournaments and ice relatedevents like the Midwest Ice FishingTournament, Pupsicle 500 and DevilsLake Tip Up, taking advantage of our
many lakes in the area. The Irish Hillsalso hosts a Polar Bear Plunge, festivals, Taste of the Irish Hills, a cardboard sled race, and so much more. Our restaurants and shoppes hostvarious DIY classes throughout thewinter months, pairing them withdinner and wine which make a greatladies night out. The Irish Hills ishome to many unique stores in whichyou can find that “one of a kind” itempaired with incredible customerservice. We also have manyexceptional restaurants that are familyowned and give you not just greatfood, but an experience that is worththe drive.
If you are the outdoorsy type, thereare many trails to walk or snowshoeon taking in the beauty of the IrishHills.

From literary bestsellers to the latestgadgets, there is no denying that the internet makes it far easier to compare theprice of shopping. But small businesses arenot going anywhere, and in fact are on theupswing, according to Kauffman Foundation, a non-profit who studies smallbusiness/Main Street trends. Their reportshows that the smallest companies aretrending upward. Today businesses withbetween one and four employees accountfor 53.1 percent of Main Street companies. That's a jump from 49.5 percent in 1996.Small businesses are the backbone of communities, just like our Irish Hills andbuying locally is the message behindcampaigns like Small Business Saturday.
When shopping this holiday season, remember that Christmas sales can account for between a third and nearly two-thirds of a retailer's annual turnover. There are plenty of reasons why it is worthgoing local for some of your gifts and groceries. Here is a list of reasons according to the Michigan State UniversityCenter for Community and Economic Development.1. Job Creation. Small local businesses are the largestemployers nationally and create two out ofevery three new jobs. Small businessesemploy more than 52 percent of thenation’s employees. Buying locally meansthat employment levels are more likely tobe stable, and may even create more opportunities for residents to work in thecommunity. 2. Keep Money in the Community. When dollars are spent locally, they can inturn be re-spent locally, raising the overalllevel of economic activity, paying moresalaries, and building the local tax base. Ifyou spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in your local economy. Ifyou spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy.Source: Civic Economics Study in GrandRapids, Michigan)
3. Community Investment: Charitable Contributions.Locally owned businesses contribute moreto local charities and fundraisers than dotheir national counterparts. We know this tobe true here in our Irish Hills area, being avery giving community. If we do not supportour local businesses, how can they supportour local non-profits (ie: food pantry, schools, community events, etc.)?4. Keep theCommunity Unique. Spending money with local retailers helpskeep the local community alive. The placeswhere we eat, shop and have fun all havethe potential to make a community feel likehome. “One-of-a-kind” businesses areessential to the distinctive character of theIrish Hills. 5. More Consumer Choices. A marketplace of many small businesses isthe best way to ensure innovation and lowprices over the long term. 6. Reduce Environmental Impacts. Reducing the amount of materials andproducts that are bought from nationallarge businesses helps reduce your ecological footprint. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation andgenerally operate from within a community.7. The False Promise of Economic Growth. While national businesses have a role toplay in every economy, purchases from national businesses typically cause moneyto leak out of the localeconomy. 8. Better CustomerService. There is power inshopping at a locallyowned business. Thedollars spent at a localretailer often have agreater impact onproduct options andservice than whenthese dollars are
spent at chains or on-line retailers. Whenshopping at local businesses you’re seenas an individual not a consumer statistic. The rapport that is built between a smallbusiness and a customer is often longstanding. The customer service isoutstanding in the Irish Hills businesses. This is one of the attributes that adds to thecharm of the area. 9. Promote Entrepreneurship.Local economic growth will attract new talent and professionals, who may, in turn, create businesses of their own, enhancinga local economy. Local businesses areowned by people who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and aremore invested in the community’s future.Shopping at local businesses create morelocal jobs. Local businesses not only paytheir employees, they also spend money atother local businesses. That means by buying local, you help create jobs for yourfriends and neighbors, contribute to improve public infrastructure and invest inyour community both socially and economically.
So, we hope that you make a point tosupport those who support YOUR community and add to the quality oflife that you enjoy everyday here inthe beautiful Irish Hills of Michigan.

The “Giving” Season isamong us. We tend tolook at ourselves and allwe have during this timeof year and give thanks, spreading our generosityby giving to those less fortunate. There are manycharities and campaignsringing their bells andcollecting money everywhere we go duringthe holiday season, whichare sure to be great organizations. But are youaware of all the non-profitsthat shape the communityyou live in?
The Irish Hills has many, many non-profits that dowonderful things to makethis community an amazing place to live. Ihappen to be partial to ournon-profits, being I am thePresident/CEO of one,and am on the board ofdirectors of three othersthat help shape the qualityof life in the Irish Hills. Wehave 40 non-profit members of the chamberand many more non-profits in the area. They include feeding ourfamilies like the BrooklynFood Pantry, beautifyingthe area like Oh TheseIrish Hills! and fireworkslike the Irish Hills Fireworks. The donations(or time) you give the Irish
Hills non-profits stays directly in the communityyou live, love and laugh in.
So, when giving back thisholiday season, pleaselook for those non-profitsthat make your communitythe unique, special onethat you love to call home, the Irish Hills. One way togive back could be sponsoring their chambermembership (I wouldn’t bedoing my job if I didn’tsuggest this!) Like I saidbefore, we have 40 non-profits that are membersof the Brooklyn-Irish HillsChamber and understandjust how beneficial it is tobelong to a group that canget to the word out aboutthem. Many of the peoplethat make up the volunteers on these non-profits are Irish Hillsbusiness owners themselves, giving backtheir time to the community they love. Giving the gift of a chamber membershipwould benefit that non-profit organization all yearlong, giving them exposure to thousands ofpeople, promotion andmany other benefits. For alist of non-profits, go toIrishHIlls.com or give ouroffice a call at 592-8907.

Two days twice a year, families and friends canenjoy one of Michigan's premiere outdoor activities,Michigan Fishing, for FREE!
The 2018 Free Fishing Weekend scheduled for thiswinter: February 17 & 18All fishing license fees willbe waived for two days.Residents and out-of-statevisitors may enjoy fishing onboth inland and Great Lakes'waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations willstill apply.
For many, the annual FreeFishing Weekend has become a tradition - a timeto get together and havesome fishing fun. Whilesome may find time to reflect while fishing, thereare no limits to variations ona great theme! Experiencedanglers who offer a child oryoung adult the chance totake their first fishing trip canprovide a rewarding experience for all. Peoplewho fish tend to understandthe natural aquatic networkof plants and animals thathelp to sustain fish as wellas the regulations that govern fishing in Michigan.
Research shows that youngpeople today do not have access to fishing
opportunities that wereenjoyed by generations before them. Some of thereasons: living in urban orsuburban areas where fishing access is not readily available, competition for time by anever-increasing schedule ofspecial activities and toolittle time for unstructuredleisure.
Michigan offers some of thefinest freshwater fishing inthe world, with more than3,000 miles of Great Lakesshoreline, more than 11,000inland lakes and tens ofthousands of miles of riversand streams.
So, grab a rod and yourfamily and friends and let'sgo fishing!
