A Space for Learning is an education project for architects and secondary school students to challenge current thinking on school design. It is initiated and delivered by the Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF), a publicly funded cultural organisation which was set up to communicate the value of architecture to a broad public.

The IAF placed 120 architects/architecture graduates with 1500 Transition Year students across Ireland during 2010. Architect/student teams collaborated to design A Space for Learning for an ideas competition.

Workshops led by architects/graduates took place during January – March 2010. Students acquired many new skills though activities including walking tours & discussions, surveying and map-making, drawing and measuring, photography, film & animation, model-making & computer-aided design. The brief allowed teams to respond to the concept A Space for Learning in any way that was relevant to their needs and aspirations.

Architect/student teams submitted their design proposals to the IAF in April 2010. Ten winning teams were selected by a Jury and received funding to develop their design into an exhibit for a national touring exhibition. A publication recorded all the submitted projects, revealing the wealth of discoveries made about architecture, social space and school design.

A Space for Learning provided schools with an excellent participation-based education project led by architects and architectural graduates. Students’ understanding of architecture was increased by working through the design process with architects. This hands-on experience provided opportunities to develop skills, creativity and critical thinking in relation to design and the built environment.

The quasi-real nature of the project allowed students to engage with real-world issues, dealing with social, ecological and economical aspects of sustainability. For example many teams specifically prioritised sustainability in their design choices. Projects were based on students’ own experiences of their environment, encouraging a strong sense of ownership of the projects and an understanding of the power of good design to transform lives. The breadth of research behind each project gave students a greater awareness of issues around the built environment, their role as citizens and the value of architecture.

Evaluation feedback was gathered from participating students, teachers and architects through forms and interviews. The positive outcome of the project is best summarised by Thomas Campbell 16, student at Dundalk Grammar, ‘I thought architecture was just about construction. I never realised it could be so creative and about different ideas’. In future schemes we would provide training and planning sessions for architects and teachers in advance of projects.

Irish Architecture Foundation’s 2010 Architects-in-Schools project A Space for Learning placed 120 architects with 1500 students in 90 schools across Ireland, culminating in the exhibition now on at NCAD Gallery. The success of the project proves the demand from schools for similar schemes and the willingness of architects to get involved in education projects. However the project also revealed challenges and opportunities in establishing cohesive and relevant infrastructure, resources and architectural appreciation in the education system. In order to learn from this and continue Architects-in-Schools schemes we believe we must research and discuss the issues relating to the development of an inspiring and sustainable Architects-in-Schools scheme in Ireland.

The aim of the symposium is to tackle these issues and produce outcomes that direct clearly the potential for Architects-in-Schools initiatives. In order to do this the IAF will bring together the individuals and organisations who potentially have a role to play in the development of future initiatives. Keynote speakers from Ireland and abroad will share their experience of a variety of existing models, to provide inspiration and examples that will inform the discussion.

The outcome will be to create a network of people to support the implementation of Architects-in-Schools programmes and an Action Plan that summarises the issues, challenges and next steps to take.

Themes for the presentations and workshops will include

Foundations The value of participation based architecture projects in schools

Building Blocks Infrastructure, networks and resources

Participants include speakers who have been involved in similar initiatives in the UK and Ireland including architects from A Space for Learning. The final schedule will be announced in January.
