The Iris Power BusTrac Systemconsists of permanently installedcapacitive couplers (2 per phase), a dedicated Iris Power BusTracinstrument, a system controller,plus digital communication tocontinuously monitor statorwinding partial discharge (PD)activity.

Facilities that have existing buscoupler installations can easilyinstall the Iris Power BusTracmonitor by connecting theinstrument to the existing couplertermination panel. The install of theIris Power BusTrac monitor doesnot require an outage. Qualitrol-IrisPower field service specialists caninstall and/or commission your IrisPower BusTrac instrument so thatalarm trigger levels, and conditionbased measurement triggers, areset to the best levels for thatparticular machine.

The Iris Power BusTrac monitoroffers a multitude ofcommunication options. Themonitor(s) can be wired via directserial cable to the front panelRS232 connector. As an option,the Iris Power BusTrac can also beremotely accessed when wiredwith an RS485 (copper or fibre), orEthernet via an external terminalserver. New users of the Iris PowerBusTrac monitor technology mustfirst permanently install 80pFcapacitive couplers during asuitable machine outage.

The Iris Power BusTrac instrumentis the product of Qualitrol-Iris Power’s many years ofexperience developing on-line PD measuring systems for highvoltage motors, turbinegenerators, and hydrogenerators. Like its predecessors,the Iris Power BusTrac monitorincludes the unique methodsspecifically designed to overcomethe electrical interference that is

typical of most power plantenvironments. This ensuresreliable and repeatable testresults with a low risk of falseindications. The test data can be easily interpreted bymaintenance professionals afterparticipating in a two-daytraining seminar, offered by ourexperienced staff. Since theinstrument is fully compatiblewith all previous generations ofthe Iris Power TGA-B technology,maintenance personnel can usethe historical data to make aseamless comparison of similarmachines.

This assessment is enhancedthrough the use of the growing IrisPower database of over 225,000test results.

The Iris Power BusTrac monitor issupplied with a termination panelthat contains a multiplexorallowing the sequential monitoringof up to 6 pairs of couplers (up to9 couplers in cross-compoundgenerators). The instrument canbe set up to run in one of twomodes:

1. Controlled Mode:

The Iris Power BusTrac monitor istriggered either through the frontpanel keypad, or remotely (withnetworking option) using a hostcomputer running the Iris PowerTracCon™ controlling software.The test results can be viewedimmediately and analyzed usingIris Power PDView™ display andtrending software.

2. Autonomous Mode:

The Iris Power BusTrac monitorcollects data continuously, severaltimes an hour, and archives the

Qm and NQN results which areimportant for trending andcomparing similar motors orturbine generators. The data forthe day and the month issummarized and archived for upto two years. It can bedownloaded through a localRS232 port to a laptop computeror remotely (with networkingoption) using Iris Power TracLinkTM

software.

Although both modes are mutuallyexclusive, users can switch backand forth between them.

FEATURES

• Sophisticated monitoring and analysis system reduces false indicationsby digitally separating partial discharges from electrical noise, on apulse-by-pulse basis.

• Proven filtering and pattern recognition enhances noise separation,allowing for a reliable and objective detection of poor impregnation,overheated windings, coil movement in the slot, ineffective ordeteriorating grading/semi-conductive material problems andcontamination.

• The system's compatibility with the Iris Power TGA-BTM technologyallows users with existing sensor installations to commission thesystem without an additional outage. Data can be easily confirmedand further analyzed with Iris Power’s TGA-B portable instrument.

• Ensures a consistent testing interval, thereby improving the quality ofthe trends. The alarm output permits maintenance personnel to focuson machines that exhibit unusual or high levels of partial dischargeactivity. This is attained by increasing testing frequency and by usingthe Controlled mode to generate plots that help to identify theprevailing failure mechanism of stator winding insulation.

BENEFITS OF CONTINUOUSMONITORING

Motors and generators have aperformance record of beinghighly reliable. However, studiesindicate that approximately40% of all failures can beattributed to the gradual agingand deterioration of the statorwinding insulation. On-line,periodic partial dischargetesting has been successfullyemployed since 1951 indiagnosing accumulatedwinding-related problems indifferent types of generators.

Unlike periodic on-line PDtesting, the Iris Power BusTracmonitor provides maintenanceprofessionals with theopportunity to

• automate the measurement(on site or remotely)

• integrate the key trendingparameters within the plantSCADA

• trigger a remote alarmindicating the need for amore detailed review of thecollected data

• maximize collection of PDactivity

WHAT IS PARTIALDISCHARGE?

Partial discharges (PD) are smallelectrical sparks that occur withinthe high voltage electricalinsulation in stator windings. PDoccurs whenever there are smallair gaps or voids in or on thesurface of the insulation.Normally, well-made statorwindings that are in goodcondition display very little PDactivity. However, over 60 years’experience has shown that as astator winding deteriorates fromwinding vibration, operation athigh temperatures, orcontamination from oil, moistureand other chemicals, the PDactivity will increase by a factor often or more. Thus, on-line PDmonitoring detects the main rootcauses of stator winding failure.Since PD monitoring can beperformed during normal motoror generator operation, andgenerally gives two or more yearsof warning indicating a risk offailure, on-line PD monitoring hasbecome a very powerful tool forpredictive maintenance.

OPTIONS

• Analog Signal Output Module (ASOM): This option allows the Tracinstrument to generate analog output signal levels, which areproportional to the NQN and Qm partial discharge summarynumbers. These signals can then be fed into a plant acquisitionsystem where they can be trended and stored. Utilizing this optionallows the Trac instrument to be treated like any other field sensorand allows PD data display, alarming, and trending to be integratedwith other plant monitoring systems under an interface familiar toplant personnel.

• Remote modes of communication permit command, control andconfiguration from a distance. For example, the key trendingparameters can be transmitted to a SCADA system, and correlatedwith operating parameters such as turbo generator load andtemperature for enhanced analysis of stator winding problems.

• Networking adds a RS485 port for remote communication to aremote computer using TracCon software.
