Irene Torres & The Sugar Devils

Not only do Irene Torres & the Sugar Devils do a lovely job brining jazz, blues and soul together on their self- titled EP, but they’re creating a buzz for their live show. Last month, the group won the Toronto Blues Society’s Talent Search and you can find out what the hype’s about when they play at this week- end’s 14th annual Southside Shuffle Port Credit Blues & Jazz Festival. It kicks off today and more than 80,000 are expected to soak in the vibes. It all happens on four stages in Memorial Park and con- sidering who’s performing, you might want to camp out on the site for the next three days. You can see the lineup on the festival’s site (southside- shuffle.com), but here are my recommendations. Irene Torres & the Sugar Devils play Saturday and Sun- day. They’re at the Brogue Pub (136 Lakeshore Rd. E.) at 9 p.m. Saturday and at Roc N Docs (105 Lakeshore Rd. E.) Sunday. The Devils are big fans of the New Orleans sound and drummer Drew Austin says their experiences in the Cres- cent City inspired the music on the EP. “It’s quite normal to hear many artists in New Orle- ans playing a wide variety of styles in one night and a lot of music down there is a mix of everything,” Austin says. “We wanted to capture that ‘gumbo nouveau’ sound. We can touch on all the styles of music that excite us, whether it be funk R&B, jazz, blues or a slow-burning Latin number like Before You Go because they all fit under the beauti- ful canopy of New Orleans music. “That’s why we love New Orleans music and why we choose to study it and perform it,” he says. “It’s an amalgama- tion of cultures and styles that continues to challenge us as players and envelope us as lis- teners.” Austin says the band mem- bers hail from different back- grounds, “both culturally and musically, and the music that we’re creating is com- bining traditional and mod- ern sounds. The grooves are timeless, the arrangements are fresh and always evolving and there is a great balance of melodic and harmonic devel- opment.” If you’re heading to the fest this weekend, I highly recom- mend packing a longboard or wearing comfy shoes since you’ll be stage hopping a lot. One of my favourite singers, Harrison Kennedy, is at the Mississippi Find Your True South stage at 1 p.m. Satur- day. If you miss him, swing by the Holmar Plumbing stage in Dave de’Eyre Square at 1 p.m. Sunday. e 24th Street Wailers play the Stonebridge stage at 3 p.m. and ace harmonica player Carlos del Junco and his Blues Mongrels blow in at 4 p.m. I’d hotfoot it back to the Mississippi stage to catch Chris Whiteley and Diana Braithwaite at 5 p.m. and Pianorama, featuring Curley Bridges and Julian Fauth, at 7 p.m. Fathead is at the Stonebri- dge stage at 9 p.m. and a trib- ute to The Band happens at the same venue at 11 p.m. Sunday’s best bets are blues belter Shakura S’aida who’ll tear up the Stonebridge stage at 4 p.m. followed by the leg- endary Downchild Blues Band at 6 p.m. Your feet will be tired by the end of the festival, but your soul will be invigorated.
