The first and foremost holiday of the New Testament Church is Easter. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ whose death redeemed human kind’s

sins and his resurrection gave hope for life after death.

On Holy Thursday, people paint Easter eggs. According to a legend,

this relates to something which happened during Christ’s crucifixion. At that moment, a hen came and laid an egg at the foot of his cross. The

blood running down Christ’s body painted the egg red and hence the

egg painting custom.

According to folk beliefs, painted eggs have a magical and

protective power. Therefore, the first painted egg should be

either buried in the field for fertility or kept next to the icon

to “heal” the ill. When the lady of the house paints the first egg, she rubs children’s cheeks with it for health.
