The issue was raised in a meet- ing between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Za- rif and Afghan CEO Abdullah Abdullah in Tehran on Tues- day. MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said they have started investigations into the incident. “The explosion occurred between two foreign camps. Police arrived in the area after a short time and helped take the wounded to hospital and helped those who were affected by the incident,” he said. It is said that the attack has some similarities with the Shah Shaheed truck bomb- ing incident in Septem- ber last year. This explo- sion killed 14 people and wounded more than 400 others. On Tuesday, police kept the Hawa Shinasi area east of Hamid Karzai Interna- tional Airport cordoned off to the public – allowing no one access to the blast site. Meanwhile, eye witnesses and residents said they saw the bodies of at least six people including an Af- ghan security guard and two shopkeepers. “The blast was very heavy. An interpreter for foreign- ers said that [many] tons of explosives were used in the attack,” said Tamim, the owner of a restaurant in the area. “Five to six bodies were there that could not be rec- ognized. I took them to the car – myself,” said an eye witness. Residents also said their houses had been damaged by the explosion. “Lots of damage has been inflicted to the [foreign] camps and to civilian hous- es as well,” said Shafiullah, owner of a car park in the area. “After the blast I left my house. My mother and sis- ter were wounded by [fly- ing] glass,” said Roeena, a resident of Hawa Shinasi area. Only 28 survivors were rescued and brought to Italy. IOM said 77 percent of the deaths occurred in the Cen- tral Mediterranean route mostly used by smugglers operating from Libyan shores. Meanwhile, 21 per- cent of deaths occurred in ated attacks against IS mili- tants from southern Zabul and western Farah prov- inces in November and suc- ceeded in dislodging them from the area, a develop- ment acknowledged by lo- cal Afghan officials. IS, which controls large ar- eas in Syria and Iraq, has recently established bases in parts of Nangarhar before attempting to extend influ- ence to other parts of the war-ravaged country. Afghan authorities insist most of the IS fighters are Pakistani nationals hailing from areas such as Orakzai, Khyber and Bajaur, three of the seven semiautonomous tribal districts of Pakistan lining the border with Af- ghanistan. IS has recently launched its propaganda FM radio sta- tion from an unknown loca- tion in Nangarhar to encour- age Afghan youth to join the group. Afghan authorities U.S. Army Col. Steve War- ren told a press briefing in Baghdad. “Taking together Iraq and Syria .. they lost 30 percent of the territory they once held,” he said. Islamic State swept through a third of Iraq in 2014, seiz- ing Mosul, the largest city the Eastern Mediterranean. Globally, the majority of the estimated 5,350 deaths were recorded in the Mediterrane- an, the most deadly region, followed by southeast Asia (mostly in the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, Malaysia and Thailand) which saw at least 800 deaths last year. Within Mexico and along the U.S.- Mexico border there have been at least 330 deaths re- corded this year.(Xinhua) recently claimed to have jammed the broadcast but residents and local media say the transmission is con- tinuing uninterrupted, en- couraging the public to join the IS fight against the Kabul government, its NATO allies and the Taliban. By comparison, 3,279 deaths were recorded in the Medi- terranean in 2014. Globally, IOM estimated that over 5,350 migrants died in 2015. IOM recorded total sea ar- rivals to Europe in 2015 at 1,004,356 or almost five times the previous year’s total of 219,000. The deadliest month in 2015 was April when nearly 1,250 migrants died, mainly due to the worst tragedy on record involving migrants cross- ing the Mediterranean from KABUL - Fierce clashes have reportedly erupted between Taliban and Islamic State (IS) fighters in eastern Afghani- stan, leaving dozens of peo- ple dead on both sides. Afghan police reported Tues- day the fighting in the re- mote Batikot and Chaparhar districts of Nangarhar prov- ince, which borders Paki- stan, began after hundreds of Taliban insurgents mounted a big attack on IS bases ear- lier this week. The Taliban offensive is said to have captured the two districts but attempts to dis- lodge the rival group from the nearby Nazyan district, which is considered the IS stronghold in Afghanistan, could not succeed. Separately, the provincial governor’s office told me- dia that security forces am- bushed and killed at least 15 IS fighters near the conflict zone late on Monday. Taliban spokesman Zabihul- lah Mujahid confirmed to VOA that clashes have taken place and claimed Taliban fighters ousted IS militants from the two districts. Muja- hid did not give further de- tails. The Taliban apparently con- siders IS a threat to its on- going violence campaign against the NATO-backed Afghan government. The clash, which took place in Batikot district of Nangarhar province, have left 15 Daesh fighters dead and several others injured, according to local officials. The crackdown against Daesh fighters would continue elsewhere in the rela- tively peaceful province to ensure lasting peace there, the officials added. Deputy to Afghan Wolesi Jirga or Lower House of parliament, Hajji Zahir Qadir told the house last week that militants loyal to Daesh had penetrated in parts of the province, warning any negligence by central government would prove cata- strophic. There was no immediate comment from the hard- line Islamist group on the estimates from the coali- tion, made up of countries including Britain, France and Jordan that have been bombing its positions. “We believe in Iraq it’s about 40 percent ... And Syria, harder to get a good num- ber, we think it’s around 20,” coalition spokesman in fight against terrorism and extremism. Zarif also stressed Iran’s support for the Afghan government’s efforts to estab- lish security and move towards peace within the framework of all-inclusive talks among all Afghan groups. He also underscored the neces- sity for the implementation of all the agreements signed be- tween the two countries in the past.
