the metro soil deposit provides plenty. The deposit is an efficient combination of

thepracticalwiththenecessary,assuperfluoussoilfromthenewmetro’stunnel

excavationprovidesthematerialnecessaryfortheexpansionof‘Stubben’thecurrent

industrial harbor of Nordhavn.

• For5yearsCopenhagenhasbeennominated’EuropesLeadingCruisePort’,because

ofgoodinfrastructure,andbecausefewerportsareabletotakeinbigships.Forthat

reason a new harbour is under construction; 1.1 kilometers long and 70 meters deep.

5Inderhavnsbroen- and 2 new channel bridges

• StudioBednarskiandFlint&Neill(bridgeengineers,incollaborationwithHardesty

&Hanover(mechanicalengineers)andSpeirsandMajor(lightingdesigners)have

won a competition to design a new opening pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the

copenhageninnerharbour(inderhavnen).

• Alongwiththeconnectingbridges,TrangravsbroenandProviantbroen,thebridgeis

expectedtoopenforthepublicinOctober2013.Togetherthesebridgesexpands

pedestrianandbicycletraffictoChristianshavnandparticularlyHolmen,historically

location for the military defense, now hosting offices, housing, education and

recreational facilities.

occupations.

connecting roads are several metres above the harbour.

knownasBIGHouse.ItisthelargestresidentialbuildinginDenmark.Theshapeof

BIGHouseisbasedontraditionalblocksofbuildings,butitisturnedandtwisted

sothatthebuildinglookslikealargeinfinitysignfromabove.A1.5-kilometre-long

pathrunsaroundtheentireperimeterofthebuilding.The‘bow’ofthebuilding

creates two inner courtyards separated at the point where the two loops meet. This

intersectioncontainsthecommunalfacilities,withafloorareaof500m2.Anine-

metre wide passage connects the urban spaces on either side of the building: the

park to the west and the canal area to the east.

• Lappingwaves,beachvolleyballandlifeontheesplanade—justminutesfrom

KongensNytorvbyMetro.WiththeinaugurationofthenewAmagerStrandBeach,

thisisnowarealityforCopenhagenresidents.TheAmagerStrandBeachcomplex

consistsofthebeachalongthecoastalroad,AmagerStrandvej,alagoon,anisland,

andthetwoparks,10-ørenand5-øren(theDanish10Øreand5Ørecoins).The

islandis2kmlongandthelagoonis400matitswidestpoint.Concretebeach

stations in the middle of the island provide toilets, refreshment kiosks and other

amenities. These beach stations also act as vantage points, providing a fantastic

viewofthelargevesselsplyingtheØresundSound,ØresundBridge,andtheplanes

preparingtolandinKastrup.Thenorthofthenewislandislandscapeofsanddunes,

andthesouthconsistsofmorepark-likegrounds.Beautifullydesignedpedestrian

andbicyclebridgesleadacrosstothenewisland’snorthandcentre.Inthesouth,itis

also possible to drive to the island without missing the natural scenery, the sky and

the sea.

BremerholmtothejunctionatGothersgade/Kronprinsessegade.Aparallel-flow

cycle lane throughout the link makes cycling in the direction of the car traffic safer.

AttheHolmensKanaljunction,itwillbepossibletocycledownBremerholm,then

alongsideMagasinandtothejunctionofKronprinsessegade.FromHavnegadeyou

willbeabletomakearightturnataredsignal–whatmanycyclistdoillegallytoday.

• ThesculptorBjørnNørgaardusedmusicashispointofdeparturewhenhemodelled

the first version of the building in clay, noting, “If it cannot be modelled, it should not

bebuilt.”Artwasall-importantandgavetheprojectanorganicandoriginaldesign

that makes the completed complex look like a sculpture. The complex comprises two

buildings that wind like a serpent through the grounds. The buildings have three or

fourstories,withatower-likeexpansioninplacesthatrisestoeightstories.Thegoal

wastodemonstratethatgoodartisanshipcouldcompetewithtoday’sindustrialized

building.Windowsaremadeofwoodandaluminium,roofsofzincorcopper.The

bothredandyellowbricksrefertotheclassicalblocksofapartmentsintheNørrebro

quarter, where red was used on the street side and yellow on the backyard side.

• BryggeBridge.Inthefallof2006,theBryggeBridgebecamethefirstbridgebuilt

acrosstheCopenhagenharbourin50years.This190-metre-longswingbridge

connectsFisketorvetShoppingCentretotheresidentialcomplexhousedintheold

seedsilooftheSoyaBeanCakeFactory.Thebridgeisreservedforcyclistsand

pedestrians,givingthemamuch-neededshortcutbetweenVesterbroandIslands

Brygge.Forexample,studentsfromthewestpartofthecityuseittoreachthe

lectureroomsattheAmager-basedpartoftheUniversityofCopenhagenandtheIT

University in Ørestad more quickly.

• TheCarlsbergBreweryproductionplantinValbyclosedin2008,withplansto

re-emergeasanewsustainablecitydistrictwith3,000housingunits,industry

and commerce. The conversion of the historical buildings on the old industrial site

willfollowaplandevelopedbythefirmofarchitectsEntasis.Thekindofurban

environmentEntasiswantsfortheCarlsbergsiteisadensecitystructurewith

attractive urban spaces, public transport, sustainable solutions for new buildings, and

restorations of the existing ones, that adds up to create a sustainable city district.

TheprojectforthenewCarlsbergcitydistrict,withitswideviews,plentifullight,

air and straight streets, points back to classic urban space and away from modernist

suburban construction. In addition to a dynamic city life, dense urban structure makes

for minimal strain on the environment.

pedestrianbridgeoverÅgadethatopenedin2008.Thesetranquilcyclewaysare

not intended to be a substitute for existing cycle ways, but a supplement where

bikerscanridefreeofautomobiletraffic.Sinceaboutathirdofallemployeesin

Copenhagen bicycle to and from work, the cycle paths along the main access roads

are sorely pressed. Both fast and cautious cyclists compete for space and constantly

havetostopattrafficlightsandatbusstopswhilepassengersgetoff.Safetyand

comfortsufferasaresult.

• Copenhagen’soperahouse,knownsimplyastheOpera,isbuiltonadirectlineacross

fromAmalienborgPalaceandemphaticallyterminatestheaxisthatrunsfromthe

MarbleChurch,throughAmalienborgPalaceandtheAmaliehavengardens,across

theFairway,andinthroughtheglassfacade,stoppinginthecentreofthemain

auditorium.TheentireFairway,fromKnippelsbroBridgetotheCitadel,hasaview

fiveofthemunderground,andatotalfloorspaceof41,000sq.m.Thebuildinghas

over 1,000 rooms, including numerous rehearsal rooms for opera and ballet and a

large rehearsal hall for the orchestra located five storeys underground. The main

auditoriumcanholdanaudienceofbetween1,492and1,703,dependingonthesize

oftheadjustableorchestrapit.Everythingintheauditorium,fromseatupholsteryto

theshapeandsizeoftheopeningsinthebackwall,contributestooptimalacoustics.

• TheLakeCycleRoute.ThelakebikeroutefollowingtheWesternborderofthelakes

fromØsterbrogadetoGammelKongevejwassubjectofpublicdiscussionformany

years.Itfinallyopenedin2008,andbecamesuccessful.InMarch2013,anumberof

further improvements were implemented.

SjoerdSoeters,whousedhisexperiencesfromJavaIsland,aresidentialdistrictbuilt

onanartificialislandinAmsterdam.AndtheDutchinspirationisobvious.Newlydug

canals form the basic structure. The new canal district was built on eight artificial

islands with a pattern of continuous blocks with sheltered courtyards.

• Theunifiedplan’sdogmascomprisedaunifyingprincipleforSluseholmen,butat

the same time they ensured that it will be a quarter with great variety, where each

building will have its individual distinctive features. In order to create this diversity,

five firms had to be involved in each block.

solid connection to the neighbours on Teglholmen and a more humane route to

therestofCopenhagen.SluseholmenintheSouthHarbourofCopenhagenhas

hasalwayspresentedachallenge,butfrom2011,theTeglværksbroenBridge

willprovidethe1,800residentsonSluseholmenwithasolidconnectiontothe

neighbours on Teglholmen and a more humane route to the rest of Copenhagen.

deckcanberaisedtoallowshipstosailtothefarendoftheTeglværkshavnen

harbour.

sources of inspiration for the Tietgen student residence was the traditional Tulou

construction of southeast China.

• Theroundbuildinghassevenstoreys.Fiveverticallinesdividethebuildingboth

visually and functionally into sections and also serve as continuous passages that

provideaccessfromoutsidetothecentralcourtyardandtothedifferentstoreys.

Transmissionofsoundwasamajorproblemintheconstruction.

• Thefaçadematerialistombak,analloyofcopper&zink,thecontentofzinkisonly

around 10% making the material quite unsustainable! … But it is durable and pretty.

• UtterslevMoseisCopenhagen’smainparkareaandaparadisefornaturelovers.The

marsh is located close to the city, yet you can quickly get far away from the vibrant

surroundings.Herearelargelakesandisletswitharichbirdlife,surroundedby

elongate,greenexpanses.Fromtheboghighestpoint,youcanseeallthewaytothe

capital.Themarshincludesoffourareasofwater-West,Central,EastandChurch

marsh, and many birds breed here. It is also a valued area for the exercise of several

kinds-walking,cyclingandespeciallyfootballatthemanyfootballfields.

astringtiedtogetherbyVesterVoldgade’snewgreentreestructure,anewwire

suspended lighting and new wide footpaths and open spaces in the sunny east

side.VesterVoldgade,formerlymedievalcityedgeagainstthegreenramparts,

experiencedtodayasamere“trafficstreet”,mainly“along”whiletheadjacentlarge

squaresVartovandDantesPladstodayisusedonlyforparkingandnotstandout

particularly in line with the street.

• Insomeplaces,thelastasphaltandmarkingsarestillmissing,includingbicycle

symbols that will be created when the weather permits. The parts where there is still

work,orwheretherehasbeennochangeyet,willbefinalizedbyotheractorssuch

asCopenhagenEnergyandtheMetroCompanywhohaveownconstructionprojects

on the line.
