The GP Patient Survey

The Department of health is running the GP patient survey again this year to assess patients’ experiences of their local NHS services. Around 5.7 million patients in England are invited to give their views each year. The GP patient survey is part of the Government commitment to make the NHS more responsive to patients’ needs.

We have a third receptionist every morning which enables both telephone lines and reception desk to be covered at all times during the busy morning.

We have telephone appointments available to book with the GPs every morning as well as a Duty GP message book for same day urgent messages

We have a nurse’s message book which has a 48hr turn around time for any non-urgent messages

For test results we recommend that you call between 1-3pm as these are our less busy times

All GP appointments on Mondays and days before and after a bank holiday are only bookable on the day to ensure that we can deal with the number of patients who need to see a GP.

There is a Duty GP available every day who deals with all emergency calls.

Each GP has a set number of appointments daily, if these are taken then the duty GP deals with all other urgent appointments.

We endeavour to ensure there are adequate appointments daily but at times of sickness or increased demand we ask that all patients are aware that it is not always easy to find Locum GPs at short notice.

wheel chair accessible. We have a wheel chair in the surgery which is available to all patients using the practice.

All staff are fully trained in matters concerning patient confidentiality. We are aware that reception is an open area and if you need to talk about any thing confidential please let the receptionist know so you can move away from the main area.

At Southwood we have a pooled list. However if you do have an ongoing illness it is in your own interests to consult with the same GP.

You can pre-book advanced appointments will any GP at the surgery either at reception or on-line with your EMIS log in.

The surgery is open from 8:30am – 6:30pm Monday to Friday. We have a pre-bookable late surgery on a Wednesday evening with the last appointment at 7:50pm, this is not suitable for emergency appointments.

We never close for lunch and you are able to book appointments on-line 24 hours of the day.

GPs sometimes run late. Please be aware that all appointments are routinely 10 minutes but if you feel that you need more time or have more than one problem that you wish to speak to the GP about please ask for a 20 minutes when booking your appointment.

Our nurses have pre-bookable appointments up to three weeks in advance. They offer a wide range of services including contraception advice, smoking cessation, travel immunisations, asthma and diabetic reviews.

Our nurse prescriber Sue has same day minor illness appointments available as well as late night clinic appointments on a Wednesday evening.

We have a heath care assistant who can take blood, perform ECGs and check blood pressure.

We also have a phlebotomist who can take blood and check blood pressure.







Southwood Practice offers a language interpretation service and Hampshire Deaf Association signing service to all of our patients that require these services. Please speak to reception at the time of booking your advanced appointment.

We welcome any feedback from our patients about the surgery and services we provide.

We have an active Patient Participation Group who hold regular meetings to discuss topics of mutual interest to the Practice and make positive suggestions about the Practice. Please see our website for further information on how to join.
