Lesson 1 - LANDMARK FACTS Landmarks often have a sign with information explaining their importance. Landmarks are usually classified as either natural or man-made landmarks, both were originally used to support navigation and finding direction. A landmark is a structure that has significant historical, architectural or cultural meaning and has been given legal protection from alteration (change) and destruction. Landmark preservation laws vary by country, but they have the same basic purpose: to keep landmarks as close to their original condition as possible. Once it is called a landmark, the owner may not change the structure without the express approval of the government or a lawful authority. How do you think it is decided that a place should become a landmark? There are some famous landmarks that visitors are not allowed to photograph for commercial use (this means they cannot use the landmarks image for adverts without permission). These include: The Eiffel tower at night, The interior and exterior of The Louvre, Pyramid whether day or night., The exterior of Notre Dame de Paris, The Sistine Chapel. There are many more also. Why do you think photos are not allowed for commercial use without permission? Thanks to their landmarks, many places have become popular cities frequently visited by tourists.

Whether it’s a natural wonder or an architectural site, some famous landmarks are among the most recognisable in the world. These are:

○ The Great Wall of China

○ Taj Mahal

Protecting the landmarks

In order to preserve these landmarks, the United Nations created the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to identify and protect landmarks around the world that are in danger of destruction. These are called World Heritage Sites and the UN may assist the countries in preserving the sites.

Mankind has built stunning landmarks that have stood the test of time. While preservation efforts by

UNESCO and other groups are ongoing to keep these sites from deteriorating, wear and tear and the very

people that come to admire their beauty have become their greatest enemies. Some places have tried

capping visitor numbers, others shut down seasonally - but all are fighting for funding to keep things

running so that the sites can be maintained and enjoyed by the world.

Task 2 Create an ethical code of conduct for tourists to use when they visit landmarks

Success CriteriaBronze – You have generally come up with at least five general tips for tourists on how to protect landmarks, here are some ideas: being eco-friendly, litter, getting around the landmark, crowd control.

Silver - Use specific examples of famous landmarks (the clip will help you learn more about famous landmarks as will your learning from the previous lesson).

Gold – Create a labelled diagram of the perfect tourist using the ideas you have come up with.

Lesson 2Using your learning from the last two lessons create a balanced argument for and against the following statement: People should not be allowed to visit famous landmarks.

Start by planning your ideas for reasons why people should be able to visit and reasons they should be protected from tourists. Some examples to get you started:

Reasons to encourage tourists Reasons to discourage touristsTo share what the site is like.To make money to help to pay for building repairs.

They sometimes leave litter. They can also create pollution (for examples arriving in cars)

Success CriteriaBronze – You have listed at least two ideas for and against the statement.

Silver - You have completed bronze but added extra detail to back up your ideas.

Gold – You have completed bronze and silver and formulated your arguments into PEE paragraphs (Point, Evidence, Explanation).

Diamond – You have aced bronze silver and gold and used several pieces of evidence to back up your points or developed detailed explanations that back up your points. You have also included a conclusion.

Sentence starters example

Point On the one hand, people should not be allowed to visit famous land marks because (think of reasons here – like, they could do irreparable damage, people often don’t respect their environment) . Evidence For example, …(you could find an example of where damage has been done). Explanation This is where you explain how your evidence backs up your point.

Point On the other hand, … Evidence, Explanation
