PRESENTATION OF THE EVENT

OUR THEME

PLANETARIUM LIVE! In and outside the domePlanetariums play a very special role in the area of science engagement, by being familiar, beloved and securing places for many visitors… Still, in an age where access to knowledge and technology has totally being trans-formed, Planetariums of all sizes are facing new challenges.On the same time, the world of Scientific Culture is experiencing new trends, such as the use of big real data, the hackers movement, the ma-kers and fablab culture, increase use of social media…encouraging visi-tors engagement on often low-budget programs.How do this new trends can, will, should (or not) affect the Planetarium world?

Whatever the new technical improvements, interaction between the public and a “live” person is one of the keys to the success of planetarium shows.The live action in the planetarium can be extremely varied. From welco-ming our visitors to implementing the variety of shows in our domes and bidding them to return, the role of the staff in our theaters is fundamental in our profession. From theory to practical activities in and outside domes, we would like to explore altogether the variety and richness of human in-teraction with our diverse audiences, linked to our different cultures and habits. From the most time-proofed ones to the most innovative ones.IPS 2018 “Planetarium Live! IN and OUTSIDE the dome” will be the first international laboratory of best live practices under and outside domes, in all their dimensions and diversities.In order to be able to fully explore this theme, we plan to dedicate one of our two Planetariums to this subject, and to use it for live planetarium sessions during all the conference, fully held in our premises. Our new astronomical observatory will also be used as a demonstration tool for possible associated activities, as could be the whole of la Cité de l’espace.

WELcOmE IN TOULOUSE !

Cité de l’espace and Toulouse Métropole are proud to host the 24th International Planetarium Society conference from 1st to 6 July 2018, preceded by a “Dome festival”. This event will be held in France for the first time, against the exceptional backdrop of: Toulouse, 2018 European City of Science. A member of the IPS since it opened in 1997, Cité de l’espace is the only scientific culture site in France to offer its visitors two large planetariums providing vendors comfortable space for technical demonstrations. The complete refurbishment of the larger planetarium in June 2017 will offer delegates a demonstration of the latest advances in terms of astronomical simulation, very high definition video projection and interactive visitor devices.

We have chosen the theme “PLANETARIUM LIVE! In and Outside the Dome”, because even with today’s technology, encountering a presenter and discovering the sky under their guidance is still a key element in a planetarium show. Toulouse is home to a first class scientific and industrial community in the fields of space and astronomy, in Europe and worldwide. The great support of our many scientific and industrial partners allows us to guarantee high-level scientific papers.

Innovative, high-quality sessions… for all PlanetariumsWe want attendees to leave the conference inspired, enlightened, with new ideas, new connections, new skills, and new plans for the future… whatever the size or the budget of their institution. In order to achieve this, a dedicated Program Committee, gathering Planetarium professionals representing the broad range of existing institutions will be created, making sure that the sessions are at the closest of our attendees interests.

We have already established a Scientific Partners Committee, including a broad range of institutions, from Space Agencies to industries, research laboratories, science engagement specialists etc. Together we will work in order to offer to our attendees the cutting edge of space and astronomy, through high-level keynote speakers providing unique and new perspectives and through content related sessions where experts will share with us in an accessible manner their latest discoveries.

The sessions will offer:

• High level lectures,

• Content related sessions,

• Practical workshops and hand’s on activities,

• Sessions for small planetariums and schools,

• Insight of the new trends in Planetariums but also in other areas of science engagement…

An enthusiastic and experienced team We believe in the values of connecting and sharing with our pairs, from Planetariums as well as from Science Centers. Since our opening in 1997, we are actively engaged in different networks such as IPS, APLF, the Association of French Speaking Planetariums, ECSITE, the European Network of Science Centers and Museums and IAF, the International Astronautical Federation.

We have therefore organized the APLF conference in 2000, and the ECSITE conference in 2012, with 995 delegates. It was a great success !

We also have a strong experience in hosting corporate events thanks to a dedicated team which organizes more than 250 events and festivals every year in our premises.

EVENT VENUE

What better place to host a Planetariums conference than a Science Center dedicated to space and astronomy with meeting rooms, catering facilities, two Planetariums, an IMAX 3D?

In order to accommodate the full conference, we will do as done many times in the past years, we will add tents of 2 000m² behind the launcher Ariane 5 to the existing facilities.

The conference will therefore revolve around 4 areas, with no more than 5 minutes walk from one room to the other:

• MAIN BUILDING (Stellarium, 3 Conference Rooms, Exhibitions),

• ASTRALIA BUILDING (Planetarium, IMAX 3D, 2 conference rooms),

• TENTS (Exhibition Hall & Catering)

EXHIBITION HALL

Located in the Gardens, 1,400m2 will be devoted to vendors booths and domes as well as a convenient central coffee break.

As the lunches will be proposed in the same building, attendees will have many opportunities to go through and visit the Exhibition Hall.

PARTIcIPANTS PROFILES

The International Planetarium Society, Inc. (IPS) is the largest organization of planetarium professionals in the world, embracing nearly 700 individuals and institutions involved in astronomy education and public outreach. Members come from 35 countries around the world and more than 20 regional and national planetarium associations are affiliated with IPS.

Established in 1970, IPS encourages the sharing of ideas so that its members can serve their communities better. Its membership is diverse, covering the entire range of planetariums: from schools, colleges and universities to national museums; small or large; fixed or portable; presenter-driven or fully automated. Under the IPS umbrella, these members are brought together to share their passion for astronomy and their methods of communicating the wonders of the night sky to others.

As an international association, IPS holds its Conference and Vendor Exhibition every two years. Recent conference includes Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Beijing, Warsaw…

IPS2018TOULOUSE will aim to bring together over 600 delegates, including planetarium directors, producers and administrators, technical personnel, professional and amateur astronomers, educators, artists, equipment suppliers and other interested parties. The Conference and Vendor Exhibition will provide a stimulating environment in which to showcase new technologies, discuss the latest trends in planetarium show production and programming and facilitate the exchange of ideas and views across all aspects of astronomy education and public outreach.

Having the conference in France after Warsaw will help to get many European attendees and many French participants as the 2018 APLF annual congress will be merged with the IPS Conference.

Also, programming Dome Festival just before the conference will enhance the attractivity of the 2018 IPS Conference.
