introductionHi everybody, Iʼm spoonforknife and Iʼm a guide writer and a member at iPod touch Fans forum. Due to the amount of people that need some serious help on this device, Iʼm packing everything I know into this guide. It isnʼt meant for a developer, but for the people that need to know some of the basics and things like that.

In this guide, I will start out with a brief description of everything in the glossary (which will come first) and then move on to define each term in a more detailed fashion with diagrams, pictures, etc.

It will cover all the firmwares that have been released by Apple® and I will try to keep this guide as updated as I possibly can. It will include tips, tricks, and handy information for almost everyone and yes, it will include jailbreaking and the “hacking” of the iPod touch.

Thank you for showing interest in this guide and reading this. You will probably want to use that handy find command in order to find what you want, but other than that - reading all the way through is a great idea for people who are just getting into this to become experts.

Please note that this guide is for the 2.0 and above firmwares. I would also like to give a shout out to the iPod touch Fans community, of which this guide comprises of its findings and tips. Also note that this guide has not been “fine tuned” for the new touch.

glossaryA

App - Abbreviation for Application. See Application.

App Store - The application store. The App Store is a default application on firmwares 2.0 and above, allowing users to buy and download applications right to their device.

Application - A “program” that can be used on the iPod touch/ iPhone. These can be installed from the App Store, the Cydia Installer, Installer, or via SSH.

Autocorrection - See Keyboard Autocorrection.

B

BIOS - A file needed to play games on some emulators on the iPod touch. It tells the emulator how to run. Note that BIOS files are illegal.

Boot Logo - The apple logo that appears when turning on your device. This can be changed with such computer applications like Pwnage Tool, Winpwn, Xpwn, or QuickPwn.

Brick - When a device completely ceases to function. An iPod touch cannot be bricked without trying extremely hard, or just being incredibly stupid.

C

chmod - A utility to change permissions of a file.

Community Sources - A variety of sources which host many community made applications on Cydia and Installer such as Ste, BigBoss, and ModMyiFone.

Customize - An application by thespicychicken to customize a variety of aspects on your device including images.

Cydia - An advanced installation application by saurik to install packages onto your device.

Dev Team - See iPhone Dev Team

DFU Mode - Mode allowing a complete, total restore of the device, even more complete than a regular force restore.

DiskAid - Computer application to put files on your device via USB.

Dock - (1) The 4 icons on each page of your home screen. (2) An application launcher by Nate True.

Emulators - Applications for the iPod touch that allow you to emulate (recreate) a gaming system such as the Playstation 1 on the iPod touch itself. Many of these emulators are made by zodttd and some require ROMs and BIOS files. For more details, see ROMS and BIOS.

Firmware - The software file of the iPod. For more details, see the Firmware section.

Force Restore - A way to set your iPod back to factory settings, erasing everything on your iPod and making jailbreaking undetectable.

FTP - See SSH.

FW - Abbreviation for Firmware. See Firmware.

gpSPhone - Game Boy Advance emulator by zodttd.

H

Home Button - The circular button below the touch screen of the iPod touch that takes you back to the Home Screen.

Home Screen - The screen on your iPod touch with a variety of icons. This is also called the SpringBoard.

I

iLiberty+ - Now defunct jailbreaking method of jailbreaking the 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 firmwares.

Installer - Application used to Install packages onto an iPod touch or iPhone developed by RiP Dev.

IPA - Format used by iTunes to put official App Store applications on your iPod.

IP Address - Your internet identity. You will need this when you SSH into your iPod touch.

iPhone Apps - See January App Pack.

iPhone Dev Team - Developers of many jailbreaking tools including Pwnage Tool and Winpwn.

iPlus - See iLiberty+.

iPod touch Fans - Large forum for the iPod touch with a wiki, forum, RSS feed, repository, and more.

iPot - Abbreviation for iPod touch. See iPod touch.

iPTF - Abbreviation for iPod touch Fans. See iPod touch Fans.

iTouch - Abbreviation for iPod touch. See iPod touch.

iTunes - Apple application for interacting with your iPod.

Jailbreak - Adding unauthorized applications not approved by Apple onto the iPod touch.

January App Pack - The five applications originally on the iPhone officially released for the iPod touch in January. The applications are Stocks, Mail, Notes, Weather, and Maps. These applications come with any new purchase of an iPod touch with firmware 1.1.3 and above. It has since been merged with the 2.0 firmware upgrade.

JB - Abbreviation for Jailbreak. See Jailbreak.

Jiggy - An easy tool on the 1.1.x firmwares to write javascript based applications on the iPhone and iPod touch.

K

Keyboard Autocorrection - The sometimes irritating feature that “corrects” the words that youʼre typing on the iPodʼs touch keyboard.

M

MMi - Abbreviation for ModMyI. See ModMyI.

ModMyI - Large forum for the iPhone.

N

Nullriver - Original developers of Installer and Summerboard.

O

Other.Artwork - A set of images that modifies the basic look of the device such as the blue navigation bars.

P

Package - A set of files that can be downloaded off of the Cydia Installer or Installer.

Pwnage Tool - A mac application by the iPhone Dev Team that allows you to jailbreak firm ware 2.0 and create custom firmwares with custom boot logos.

Q

QuickPwn - A windows application by the iPhone Dev Team that allows you to quickly jailbreak firmware 2.0 without the need to restore.

R

Recovery Mode - The mode when your iPod has the Connect to iTunes logo on its screen. It must be restored through iTunes.

Repo - Abbreviation for Repository. See Repository.

Repository - A URL that contains packages to be downloaded off of Cydia Installer or Installer onto an iPod touch or iPhone.

Respring - To restart the SpringBoard, allowing changes to the SpringBoard visually appear.

RiP Dev - Russian Development team that now develops Installer and Kate.

ROMS - A copy of a game that can be played on an emulator. Most ROMs are illegal, the ones that are legal, are not very good and homemade.

S

Saurik - Developer of many applications and utilities including Cydia Installer, Cycorder, and Winterboard.

SDK - Software Development Kit released by Apple enabling developers to create applications for the iPod touch and iPhone.

SMB - Abbreviation for Summerboard or Super Monkey Ball. See Summerboard.

Source - See repository.

SpringBoard - The home screen. See home screen for more details.

SSH - Connecting to your iPod touch over wireless internet.

Ste - A Community Source on all firmwares, and both Installer and Cydia, who would be more than happy to host your packages.

Summerboard - An application on 1.1.x firmwares that extended the springboard to be themed.

SWoD - The Spinning Wheel of Death. This is an error that usually results in a restore causing a spinning wheel to be on the iPodʼs screen for “all of eternity.”

T

Theme - A set of images customizing the look of the iPod touch.

TTR - An abbreviation for the popular Tapulous game, Tap Tap Revenge.

U

Unlock - To be able to use an iPhone on various GSM based carriers around the world. This cannot be done with an iPod touch.

V

Verbose Mode - Mode that allows the iPod touch to boot (turn on) faster with scrolling lines of code showing the processes it is going through.

VoIP - Voice Over IP. This allows one to use the iPod as a phone when wifi is available.

W

Web Application - Applications accessed via Safari optimized for the iPod touchʼs browser.

Winpwn - Pwnage Tool for Windows. See Pwnage Tool for more details.

WinSCP - A Windows SSH client.

Winterboard - Powerful, open source Summerboard replacement on 2.0 and above by saurik.

X

Xpwn - Command Line Pwnage Tool for Linux.

Z

ZiPhone - Tool for jailbreaking 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 by Zibri that wasnʼt terribly reliable.

ZiPhoned - When ZiPhone breaks your iPhone.

zodttd - Creator of many emulators.

restoringFirst, the most important thing you can do with your iPod. The Restore.

WHAT RESTORING IS

Restoring is a way to completely reset your device back to factory settings. It erases the information on your iPod and replaces it with the information from a stock firmware, which will fix anything to do with corruption of data in your device, because it replaces bad files.

It is a last resort. It erases your music, your notes, you preferences, your videos, your themes, your skins, your apps, your everything.

A restore will fix any software related problem with your device. If it is hardware related, then a restore cannot help you.

WHAT RESTORING IS NOT

It is not something you want to do often, because restoring is not a desirable activity. It is time consuming, boring, and you have to set up your device again from scratch and set all of your preferences again. It doesn't feel like the same as the device you put into Recovery Mode.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

You should know how to restore.

1. Make sure iPod is completely powered off.2. Hold the home button while its off.3. While holding the Home button, connect the cable. The iPod should power on.4. Keep holding the Home button.5. The Connect to iTunes image should come up.6. Congrats, you in recovery mode.You should also know what a restore is and isn't.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Do not recommend restoring at the tiniest issues. If the volume doesn't work, don't instantly say Restore. Try a reset of all settings, reboot, respring, or something along those lines. Take time to research what the problem actually is rather than saying Restore..

Since you have bought your iPod touch, you've probably been wondering what you can do to it. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before thinking about a jailbreak, or adding extra applications and customizing your iPod.

WHY SHOULD I JAILBREAK?

You should jailbreak because there is almost no risk to jailbreaking. While you may think that there could be problems like breaking your iPod, you should think again. The only ways you can break your iPod are simply if you are really, really stupid, or you're trying to actually break it. Here are the difficult ways to break your iPod.

• Physical Mutilation. If you physically kill the iPod, it is irrelevant if the hardware works. Try smashing your microwave with a sledge hammer (or rather, don't.) What happens? It breaks. Same concept.

• Other than that, it's really hard to kill your iPod. If I haven't scared you off yet, keep reading to find out what you can do and how.

Plus, jailbreaking gives you cool new applications that you can use on your iPhone, awesome themes and wallpapers, and games! Look at the screenshot of toomuchcaffeineʼs Ultimate Leopard! Thinks like this are cool and easy with a jailbreak.

If youʼre thinking, that sounds quite dangerous, and I donʼt want to break my iPod, it really isnʼt dangerous at all. But continue to read.

WHY SHOULDNʼT I JAILBREAK?

Jailbreaking your iPod touch voids your warranty. Apple's End User License Agreement (EULA) states that you cannot modify your iPod touch, and can't use iTunes for nuclear facilities, blah, blah, blah. Jailbreaking, or installing 3rd party applications, voids your warranty. You will be unable to use your warranty. That's pretty big.

Let that sink in.

Fortunately for you, you can restore your iPod, so they cannot trace your iPod being jailbroken, and your warranty is magically back! Yay!

Jailbreaking your iPod touch is debatably illegal. While most of us believe that jailbreaking is not illegal, there are a few people that believe it is, including Apple employees. You can decide for yourself. I donʼt believe it is, and neither does the jailbreaking community.

It is possible to break your iPod. Some things that you can do with your iPod touch with a jailbreak are illegal. For example, if you donʼt want to pay for apps. There are cracked applications. Those are ILLEGAL.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THIS?

With a jailbreak, you can install applications. These applications can be useful, like the BossPrefs application, or even as crazy and fun as Macman, a great PAC-MAN clone. There are well over 400 applications out there for you to easily install. You can even play Game Boy, Playstation, and even Quake!

In addition, you can trick out your iPod with cool themes like Ultimate Leopard (toomuchcaffeine) and Badge (TheAppleTree). These themes can be really beautiful and elegant, and a good deal of them can be installed right off of your iPod - No Computer Required!

Before you jailbreak, see which firmware you want to jailbreak, and see this firmware comparison, coming up on the next page. Just a tip, you want to be on a recent firmware for the best support and most applications.

firmware comparison1.1

Firmware 1.1 was the first release of the iPod touch firmware. It included the default applications Safari, YouTube, Calendar, Contacts, Clock, Calculator, Settings, Music, Videos, Photos, and iTunes, with the latter 4 applications being on the dock.

1.1.1

Firmware 1.1.1 followed up shortly on the initial firmware 1.1, with no feature changes but made a significant bug fix to correct “washed out blacks” on some units. No new features were added. It can be jailbroken with the AppSnapp jailbreak featured on the website http://jailbreakme.com and a variety of other sites. More details about this jailbreak are in the jailbreak section.

PROS

- Very Easy Jailbreak- Almost All 1.1.x Applications are compatible- Better for skinning- Supports full skinning, keyboard skinning, and almost all themes.- Stability- Easy to re-jailbreak- Very good compatibility

CONS

- Cannot add calendar events without fix- Not as optimized- Sound quality slightly worse- No wiggling icons / No Webclip Creation- Limited to 400 MHz

1.1.2

Firmware 1.1.2 followed up on 1.1.1, with a variety of bug fixes and small feature additions including the add calendar event button in the Calendar application which was mysteriously missing in 1.1.1. The main thing was that it patched the TIFF exploit that enabled the AppSnapp jailbreak on firmware 1.1.1.

PROS

- Very little bugs- Still quite easy to jailbreak- More Stable- Add Calendar Events- Very stable- A little faster than 1.1.1- Processor Speed Bumped to 412 MHz.

CONS

- Cannot do Keyboard Skinning- No wiggling icons / No Web Clip Creation- Crashes on occasion

1.1.3

Firmware 1.1.3 added a plethora of changes including webclips and rearranging the home screen at a hefty price of $20. It also added lyrics, bug fixes, and support for iTunes movie rentals.

PROS

- Better Battery Life than 1.1.1 or 1.1.2- Adds many new features- More Stable- Faster than Previous Firmware Versions

CONS

- Seems a little buggier than previous firmwares- Locate Me in Google Maps doesn't always work- Ugly New Dock- Slightly Reorganized File System (1.1.1 and 1.1.2 repos do not work well with it)- Soft Jailbreaks often crash to the Force Restore (Connect to iTunes) screen

- Some applications unusable, others don't work well- Needs quite a few fixes to get many common applications to work- Purchased songs from iTunes might not work- Springboard runs as different user, causing some older apps from 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 to not work.

1.1.4

Firmware 1.1.4 fixed a few bugs from 1.1.3. Seems to be a placeholder for 2.0 with nothing really new at all.

PROS

- Many Nice Bug Fixes- More Stable- Most Recent- Still Faster

CONS

- Doesn't really improve very much. Seems to be a placeholder.- Some applications do not work very well with it.

1.1.5

Firmware 1.1.5 fixed a few bugs from firmware 1.1.4. and was an alternative for people who didnʼt want to pay for 2.0.

PROS

- Bug Fixes

CONS

- It is simply a placeholder for people that chose not to upgrade to 2.0, couldn't afford it, or cannot use the iTunes Store to buy products.- The Jailbreak status is known to be a bit buggy.

Firmware 2.0 added the App Store, a whole new calculator, and seemed to completely revamp the Operating System. Unfortunately, this comes at $10 through iTunes.

PROS

- Many, many new features.- Great scientific calculator.- Enterprise features with Cisco VPN, MobileMe support, and Microsoft Exchange.- Ability to purchase applications.- January Update comes bundled with it.

CONS

- Very buggy. Random reboots and lag are not appreciated.- All applications from previous firmwares must be ported to 2.0.- A bit pricy.

2.0.1

Firmware 2.0.1 added more bug fixes to 2.0.

PROS

- Bug Fixes make it a much more valuable version of 2.0.

CONS

- Still rather buggy.- Applications from previous firmwares do not work on 2.0.1.

2.0.2

Firmware 2.0.2 added yet more bug fixes to the incredibly buggy 2.0 set of firmwares.

PROS

- Bug Fixes make it a much more valuable version of 2.0.

CONS

- Still rather buggy.- Applications from previous firmwares do not work on 2.0.1.

2.1

Firmware 2.1 added a bunch of new bug fixes and was released with the new iPod touch. Genius playlists, epic bug fixes, Nike+ iPod integration, and better display information were just some of the new features.

PROS

- Far less buggy- Shorter Backup time- Genius- Nike+iPod integration- Added Music display

CONS

- Still a bit buggy.- Applications from previous firmwares do not work.

2.2

Firmware 2.1 added a bunch of new bug fixes, huge speed improvements, and retooling of a few portions of specific applications.

PROS- Far less buggy- Very stable- Faster- New Google Maps Features- Retooled App Store- Podcast downloading in iTunes- Retooled Safari

CONS- Caused some incompatibility problems with some applications.- No Google Maps Street View

Push is a feature on the 2.x firmwares you should know about, so you're probably wondering what "push" is. With the addition of Firmware 2.0, we now see support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, which utilizes "push". Now, this can be confusing if you, simply, have no idea what that is. Hopefully we can answer those questions.

WHAT IS PUSH?

"Push" refers to the technology known as Webcasting which "pushes" updates to you periodically, such as email, rather than having to manually check yourself. Usually, the mail would go to your ISP's (Internet Service Provider) mail server, which means you would have to go check, and "pull" the email. Basically, instead of wondering when you're going to receive that important email from your cousin, you'll be alerted when this email has arrived, therefore "pushing" the email straight to you. If you're still confused, think of RSS Feed. For example, when a new front page post is made on iPodTouchFans, a user subscribed to iPodTouchFans' RSS Feed would automatically receive the new article, therefore "pushing" it to them, while another unsubscribed user would have to go to iPodTouchFans and check for themselves.

WHAT DOES PUSH SUPPORT ON 2.X?

• Push email ◦ Emails are pushed to you, instead of having to manually check yourself. • Push contacts ◦ Contact lists are constantly up to date. • Push calendar ◦ Upcoming events on the calendar are pushed to you, alerting you.

HOW DO I ENABLE PUSH?

Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is automatically connected out of box. Through the Exchange ActiveSync application, you have the option to turn On/Off push email, calendar and contacts. There is also settings you can enable, and you can select which days to sync.

Alongside Push comes a service called MobileMe.

how to jailbreakONCE AGAIN, THE NEW IPOD TOUCH CANNOT BE JAILBROKEN NOW.

After downloading the firmware, you'll likely need to downgrade/upgrade to it. To downgrade or upgrade to a firmware, open iTunes, plug your iPod in, and navigate to your iPod's pane. You can get to this by clicking on your iPod's name in the sidebar.

On a PC, hold shift and click restore.

On a Mac, hold option and click restore.

Then, select your downloaded firmware, and your iPod will restore to that firmware.

1.1.1

- Brief Summary: Use the AppSnapp Jailbreak.- Detailed method: On firmware version 1.1.1, on your iPod, go to http://jailbreakme.com. At the bottom, hit "Install AppSnapp". You have jailbroken 1.1.1! Note that if this method doesn't work the first time, you should just try again.

1.1.2

- Brief Summary: Use the AppSnapp jailbreak, use oktoprep, and do the TouchFree Jailbreak.- Detailed method: Jailbreak 1.1.1 with the method above. Then, go to Installer and download the package "oktoprep." You don't need to add any sources but Community Sources, which will already have oktoprep in it. On your computer, download the 1.1.2 jailbreak at this link http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/112jb.html, and follow the onscreen instructions. This is for both Mac and PC computers.

1.1.3 - 1.1.5

- Brief Summary: Use ZiPhone or iLiberty+.- Detailed method: Download one of the above from the links above, connect your iPod, and click Jailbreak.

2.0 - 2.1- Brief Summary: Use Pwnage Tool, winpwn, Quickpwn.- Detailed method: Download a firmware and customize it with Pwnage Tool, follow the onscreen instructions, and restore to your custom firmware via iTunes. Or use Quickpwn, for a quick, easy, and fast jailbreak.

WHICH IS THE BEST?

For customization, I recommend PwnageTool or Winpwn. If you just want to get the jailbreak over fast and easily with no complications, Quickpwn is your ticket.

WAIT!

Wait, wait! What's this I've heard about Soft Upgrades? Soft upgrade is short for Software upgrade. It is a horrible method to jailbreak an iPod. Firstly, it requires you be jailbroken. Then, it fools your iPod, iTunes, and you into believing that you are on another firmware. These are very buggy and have even been known to put your iPod into restore mode on random occasions. Under no circumstances should you do a Soft Upgrade.

Installer 4 is not very good, and I also advise waiting for updates.

• Review: The App Store was the first tool for distribution of applications for the iPod touch and iPhone on 2.0. The first of its kind, the App Store was done incredibly well. With Apple support, a fantastic interface, and thousands of applications ready for download, the App Store was incredibly well done. Unfortunately, it requires iTunes being supported in your country. If you don't have a credit card or iTunes not being supported in your country: you have no App Store. Despite minor gripes, the App Store is a fantastic application installer for the iPhone and iPod touch.

verdictBased on counting the ratios between pros and cons, Cydia automatically wins by a large margin. From the tone of the reviews, you can probably tell that the feature deprived Installer 4 falls far behind its predecessor (Installer 3), and thus, the App Store. Cydia just has done so much better than Installer, carries more features than the App Store, and does so much as an open source application. Cydia is the best Installer on 2.0 for now, and this guide will be updated to reflect that. Stay tuned, and here are the current results below.

Cydia Installer - Cydia Installer is a package manager and installer by Jay Freeman, or saurik. Cydia is open sourced, has a source adder, is very customizable, is really stable, and is the best of all Application Installers (that includes Installer and App Store.) Cydia isnʼt buggy and contains a

large variety of applications and themes to download - including a huge selection of Developer tools from Telesphoreo. Use it. Itʼs good.

utilitiesUtilities are essential. They managed what we have and for this, I will be covering Utilities and Tweaks.

Dock - Dock is for those of you that donʼt want to use a separate application for launching apps. It provides a subtle yellow line at the bottom of your screen at all times, and when bringing your finger up, it shows a nice submenu of categories that can launch apps. With Dock Preferences, you can move apps from category to category and even make certain apps not even show up giving it a level of customization AppFlow cannot take.

Five Icon Dock - This allows you to simply drag an icon to your dock and it magically has room for a 5th icon. Drag it out, and it goes back to 4. Magic.

Make It Mine - Make It Mine allows you to change your Carrier Image and your banner. Your carrier image is the thing that says iPod and the banner shows the time. This application can make them say custom things. For example, my banner could be iPhod, and my banner could say 103.3 FM.

OpenSSH - OpenSSH allows your computer to “talk” with your iPod, so you can see the file system and manipulate it, adding things and putting applications and themes in. This is a must download seeing as you need OpenSSH for many of the things you use your iPod for.

QuickGold - If youʼve ever heard of QuickSilver, an application launcher on the mac, you have heard of QuickGold. Simply tap the home button, a field pops up with a keyboard, and it searches your device for contacts, web history, applications, and more. This is my preferred launcher.

SBSettings - While Poof, BossPrefs, and SBSettings are by the same maker and both can hide applications, SBSettings is more full featured and does it all in one application and SpringBoard plugin. SBSettings allows you to change your brightness, and toggle

Wi-fi and SSH all through the SpringBoard, without opening a separate application. It is a must have application.

Stack - A really, really awesome launcher based on the Mac OS X Leopard feature of the same name.

Winterboard - Winterboard is a powerful, open sourced theme manager and applier. It has a simple interface for applying themes and using it is incredibly easy. You need this application.

gamesAs with most people, Iʼm a big fan of games, and if youʼre looking for emulators, you can take a look at the next section for that. My favorite games and the best deals are below.

JAILBREAK

MacMan - This is a great Pac Man clone. Using the accelerometer (tilt controls), you can steer this Mac themed Pac Man to eat up those pesky yellow dots and steer away from the monsters.

APP STORE

Cube Runner - Cube Runner is a great, addicting, free game where you pilot a ship through a field of cube mines. Tilting to steer is intuitive and a catchy techno beat plays in the background (which can conveniently be disabled when it gets tedious.)

iCopter - The fun web game Helicopter has been ported to the iPod touch for only 99 cents. For almost endless and addictive fun, iCopter is the way to go. If you donʼt like it how it is, the developer is pushing out frequent updates and this is cheaper than the other helicopter type games: CaveCopter and iCave.

Tap Tap Revenge - A great deal of a game, Tap Tap Revenge is a Guitar Hero type game of tapping circles as they come towards you to get a better score. Tapulous, the makers of this game host weekly contest with all sorts of prizes: cases, money, songs, etc. In addition, this game is free! Song and “tap” downloads are free and from right inside the application. Everything in this game is wonderful - the graphics, the gameplay, and songs. This is a must download.

Trism - This Tetris style game uses the accelerometer to match up 3+ triangles up of the same color. This is my new favorite time waster and has incredible replay value due to the fact that it has obstacles that can easily end your game like locks and bombs. Trism is $4.99

emulatorsYou probably have some questions. Here are answers.

1. What is an emulator?It duplicates the function of one thing (i.e. Game Boy, Playstation, Sega Genesis) and allows it to be played on something else (i.e. Your iPod touch). Most of the emulators for the iPod touch are made by zodttd, which you can find at http://zodttd.com.

2. What can I do with one?You can play your favorite video games that you never got to play as a child. Go, run child! Run!

3. Is it illegal?Emulators themselves are not illegal. Various portions of emulators are illegal, and are therefore not included in the original copy of the emulator. You must find these various files yourselves. The illegal parts are "BIOS" and "ROMS," which are described in greater detail below.

4. What is a BIOS file?In simple terms, a BIOS file is a "Built-In Operating System," meaning that it tells the emulator to run. The Emulator itself needs some instructions, and the BIOS will tell it how to run. BIOS files are illegal, so do not distribute them on this forum. They are illegal because they are an operating system. Think about if you copied Windows 95 install disks. Same thing.

5. What are ROMS?A "ROM" is a copy of a given console game. These "ROMS" can run on an emulator, and mostly are not legal. "ROMS" can be used to make copies of a game and easily spread to piracy. It is illegal to have a "ROM" for 24 hours, contrary to popular belief. However, some ROMS are legal. They are just crappy and are homemade.

NINTENDO SAYS: Can I Download a Nintendo ROM from the Internet if I Already Own the Authentic Game?

There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited

amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.

6. 7. What Emulators Run at Full Speed?This question can give you many different answers, especially on which "ROM" you're talking about. This is because some ROMS do not run well, and some do.

8. Why is my sound crackly and weird?Emulators are like that. Youʼll have to deal with it.

9. Where can I get ROMS and BIOS?Iʼm not telling you where, but Iʼll tell you where to put them and what theyʼre called.

MxTube - MxTube is a YouTube video downloader. It can also now stream videos too, so it is nearly a complete replacement of the YouTube application, plus it can download things!

PocketTouch - PocketTouch is a gesture based music controller. What this means is that you use a variety of swipes, taps, and shakes to control your music. Double tap to pause, swipe to change tracks, and shake to shuffle. With PocketTouch, you never have to take out your iPod, double tap the home button and search around for a button - just tap, swipe, and shake!

PwnPlayer - Alternative Music Player by errrick that can play music from the file system.

APP STORE

Band - With Band, you can create your own music, with a variety of instruments including Bass Guitar, Piano, Drum Machine, Drum Kit, Crowd, and much more. Then, you can record and master your creation for listening anytime within Band. While Band is a little bit pricy at $9.99, I feel that it is well worth it.

Now that youʼve read all about Applications, you may be wondering how to make them. If youʼre wondering that question, youʼre not alone, but if you want to develop, you must know a combination of C+ and Objective C, and have a decent knowledge of Terminal. Please note that this does not describe how to develop applications, it only talks about what the SDK is, how it is used, and how it can be implemented. It should also be noted that the SDK is under a strict NDA, which you can read when you apply to the iPhone Developer Program.

The iPhone SDK, or Software Development Kit, is an application that runs on your Mac OSX machine. Contrary to what some believe, it does NOT show up on your iPod/iPhone as an icon, but rather it allows you to create applications for your iPhone/iPod touch. It is an official Apple Product, and does not require nor endorse jailbreaking. The SDK Comes with five main tools, which will be discussed below:

XcodeThis tool allows you to create, edit, and manage code written in Objective-C (for more information, go to http://developer.apple.com/). In the words of Apple Developer Connection, Xcode is Apple's premiere development environment for Mac OS X. In addition to being packaged on the DVD with every copy of Mac OS X, the latest Xcode developer release is always available for free to ADC members and includes all the tools you need to create, debug, and optimize your applications.

DashcodeThis application is excellent for creating Dashboard Applications, without, or limited code. It is bundled within OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Interface BuilderThis is where all the great things about the iPhone SDK are put together. Interface Builder lets you create a UI (User Interface) without any code. Just drag and drop. In addition to this, you can create connections between the code and Interface Builder.

InstrumentsInstruments can monitor activity on your iPhone, OSX Environment, and track memory leaks or hogs. It works with Jailbroken and Non-Jailbroken iPod touches.

sshWhat Is SSH?

SSH is a way of wirelessly transferring files to and from your jailbroken iPod touch. Your computer sends the files to your router, which in turn sends the files to your iPod. Of course, you'll need a wireless router to do this, though.

Why Should I Use This Thing?

I'm glad you asked. Many applications and modifications are not available in Installer or Cydia, so you have to manually add them to your iPod.

How to do it

Download OpenSSH from Cydia.

Reboot.

Install an SFTP client on your computer. If youʼre on a PC, I recommend WinSCP. If youʼre on a Mac, I recommend Cyberduck.

Go to Settings on your iPod touch and then tap Wi-Fi. Make sure youʼre connected to the internet, and on the network that youʼre connected to (itʼll have a check mark on it), tap the blue arrow. There, you will see a field that says IP Address. Write this down. For reference, it should look something like 192.168.x.xxx.

In your SFTP client (WinSCP or Cyberduck), start a new connection. For the host name, this will be your IP address. For username, put in root, and for password, use alpine. This is the default configuration, which I will teach you how to change later in the guide.

Also, make sure youʼre using Port 22 (in your SSH client) or using SFTP rather than FTP.

It should then connect! Be responsible and donʼt delete files if you donʼt know what they are. Seriously, itʼs bad.

How do I enter commands?

If your FTP client doesnʼt include a way to enter commands, you will have to use Terminal.

On a mac, open Terminal. Use either Spotlight or find it in Applications/Utilities. Then type in ssh root@your.ip.address.here. Wait a few seconds and then you can enter commands.

On a windows machine, open WinSCP and connect to your iPod. Then, press Ctrl+T and a window will popup where you can enter commands.

WHAT IS WINTERBOARD?

Winterboard is a theming application for the iPod/iPhone on 2.0. It allows you to change many many aspects of the iPhones interface, such as the icons, wallpaper and well all the images on the iPhone. A good thing for Winterboard is that you can use the old summerboard themes as well, just drop then in the themes folder(how to below)

WHERE DO I GET IT?

You can get it from Cydia. There is no source you have to add, it should be there when you open the application.

The location in Cydia is the System folder.

WHAT ARE THESE THINGS IN THE WINTERBOARD FOLDER?

-Black Navigation bars: These change the top and bottom bars to black of many apps.-Saurik: THis is just a preview of the winterboard.html files. Its allows you to have moving wallpapers.-Transparent Dock/ Icon Labels: These remove the icon names from the apps on springboard.-User Wallpaper: This allows you to use your lock screen wallpaper as your SpringBoard wallpaper.-Server Lock Example: No idea. -Solid Status Bar: No idea.

WHY SHOULD I USE THIS OVER CUSTOMIZE?

You should use Winterboard over customize because, itʼs much easier to use. You can quickly pick a theme and close Winterboard and see it instantly. Customize has many problems for many people, themes donʼt show, nothing changes after you apply one. Winterboard does work, no problems, easy as pie.

WHERE CAN I GET NEW THEMES?

In Cydia, there are many themes for you to download. From Cydia, you can get full themes, sliders, carriers, wallpapers, sounds, keyboards, and what ever else you can change on the iPhone.

If you hit open the Themes(Summerboard) folder, you will see many Winterboard themes in there. To see what theme you are downloading click on the "more information" bit and you should see some screenshots. You can choose to download it.

HOW DO I INSTALL THEMES VIA SSH?

Open up your SSH client, Navigate to /Library/Themes. And there are the Winterboard themes there. Simply drop the themes files in there, and open up Winterboard to see them.

HOW DO I APPLY A THEME IN WINTERBOARD?

This is the easy part. Simply open Winterboard, tap on the one you just downloaded. Then close Winterboard. It shall respring and take you back to the lock screen. Unlock, and there we go.

Please note that if you are using a combination of themes (i.e. Bluebird and MonoChrome) that you put whatever you want most of on top of the other one. For example, if you want icons from Bluebird, but the Artwork from Monochrome (and not the icons), put Bluebird on top of Monochrome because Monochromeʼs icons will be overwrought by Bluebirdʼs icons.

To rearrange themes, simply hold down the 3 line box to the right of a theme, as shown in red. Drag it upwards above another theme.

Close Winterboard, and youʼre done!

HOW DO I “UNAPPLY” THEMES WITH WINTERBOARD?

Just tap a theme and it will become unchecked. Then, hit the home button, your device shall respring, and that theme will be “unapplied.”

HOW DO I MAKE A THEME FOR WINTERBOARD?

You can use many programs for making themes, the most used are Photoshop and GIMP.

CAN I CHANGE THE FONT WITH WINTERBOARD?

No, not at the moment. But you can change the font style on the SpringBoard! To do so, download the package Winterboard Font Pack in Cydia from STE Packaging. I made it and you apply whatever font you desire via Winterboard.

CAN I CHANGE THE LOCKSCREEN BACKGROUND?

Yes, simply include a LockScreen.png in the main directory (root) of your theme.

Dynamic Wallpapers

Winterboard has the ability to be able to have wallpapers which change after a certain amount of times.

Video Wallpapers

Simply put a video with the right dimensions and name it Wallpaper.mp4 into a theme file in /Library/Themes via SSH, and apply the theme.

widgetsWinterboard supports HTML theming. What this means is that you can use a webpage for your Home Screen background. With this, you can make fading wallpapers and other cool stuff. But the coolest part of all, is that you can use Javascript. This enables widgets to be used, like the clock and weather widgets.

The clock widget is a handy, moving clock on the Home Screen. It actually works. The weather widget is an updatable, customizable portion of your Home Screen with updating weather.

Please note that if you want both clock and weather widgets, you will have to wait until I finish writing that part. Sorry for the inconvenience.

PUTTING IT ON YOUR iPOD

Open up your SSH client and navigate to "/Library/Themes," and drop the "WeatherWidget.theme" folder in there.

Now, you will need to change your location. To do this, you have to open up the "configureMe.js" file. This script is found in "/Library/Themes/WeatherWidget.theme/Private"

Double click to open it.

Now, there will be lots of text which tells you what to do, but that can be confusing.

So find the text that says: var locale = "(insert your living area here)" //e.g. 'Defiance, Ohio'|'Moscow, Russia'|'Ledyard, AT'|'London, UK'

So if you live in London, you will type London, UK. Get what i mean?

WHICH WIDGET?

Number 5, OneLine is the default one which is set when you download the files from the "What will i need bit". If you want the One Line widget, then all you need to do is the whole of Step 1. And respring.

For all widget types, find the line that says: "var stylesheetWall = 'oneLine' //'originalBubble'|'myopia'|'iconOnly'|'split'|'oneL ine'|"

CHANGING THE TEMPERATURE TO FAHRENHEIT

To change the temperature to Fahrenheit, you will have to open the configureMe.js

Find the line that says "var isCelsius = true //true|false"

Change the bit where is says "var isCelsius = true" to " var isCelsius = false"Save and respring. To change it back to Celsius, just do the opposite.

WEATHER WIDGET IN THE STATUS BAR

Well there is a slight problem with this, as its not part of the status bar at all. Itʼs under it. So if you are using a theme with a full colored bar then you will be unable to see it.

Simply download the WeatherWidgetStatusBar.theme from the download above and follow the steps to customize it.

Save files and respring to see the changes.

CHANGING THE COLOR

This works with every type of widget.

To change the color to whatever you want you will need to navigate to "/Library/Themes/WeatherWidget.theme/Private/Stylesheets" and choose which version of the widget you are using. If you are using Icon Only, this does not apply to you.

Open up the one you are using, and you shall see many lines.

#WeatherContainer{ float:right; margin-top:-22px; margin-right:48px; color:white; padding:5px 10px 5px 10px; }

Find that text, which should be the first chunk of it.

Now where it says "color:white" that means that the text color is white. Change where it says "white" to any color you want. Black, blue, red. Whatever its up to you.

Save the file and respring.

CHANGING THE COLOR

In a styleʼs css file (located in Private/Stylesheets), there will be a line that says the following.

background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0);

The first 0 represents red, the second green, the third blue, and the last transparency. 0.1 will mean almost completely transparent and 1 means opaque.

PUTTING IT ON YOUR iPOD

Open up your SSH client and navigate to "/Library/Themes," and drop the "Analog Bluebird Clock.theme" folder in there.

Now, you will have to select your skin. Go to Private/Cool Clock/coolclock.js in the theme folder. Double click to open it. About half way through the file there is a section that says this:

There are 3 default skins: swissRail, chunkySwiss, and chunkySwissOnBlack. To switch skins, simply replace swissRail in the section above with one of the other ones. Youʼll also notice the moreskins.js. To import a skin from moreskins.js, first open the file. Then youʼll see the following skins: swissRail, chunkySwiss, chunkySwissOnBlack, fancy, machine, classic, modern, simple, securephp, Tes2, Lev, Sand, Sun, Tor, Cold, Babosa, Tumb, Stone, and Disc.

To get a theme into the coolclock.js file, select the theme you want from the theme title to }, or if itʼs the last one, };. Then copy it and paste it in the coolclock.js in between two other themes if it has }, or at the end of the themes if it ends in a };. If you donʼt understand this, it is probably best if you just use the default themes. Below is an example of what a single theme looks like.

Apply the theme in Winterboard, respring, and your clock widget should appear as the fourth icon in your dock.

MOVING THE CLOCK WIDGET

Since the clock widget is automatically set to be the fourth dock icon, this can be a problem with those with five icon docks, or stack users. To do this, you must open Wallpaper.html and edit the following:

margin-top:405px; margin-left:252px;

margin-top refers to how many pixels the top of the clock is away from the top of your screen out of 480 pixels. margin-left refers to how many pixels the left side of the clock is away from the left side of your screen, out of 320 pixels. If you add 60 pixels to the number of pixels it is away from the top, you get how many pixels it is from the bottom. If you add 60 pixels to the number of pixels it is away from the left, you get how many pixels it is away from the right side of the screen.

Edit the number of pixels to move the clock around the screen. Respring each time you make a change for it to show. This is going to take a lot of trial and error, but after awhile you will get it. If you did not understand this section, moving the clock is probably not for you.

both widgetsSince WinterBoard only allows one WebKit element to be present on the SpringBoard at a time, it is impossible to have two themes with html to be using the SpringBoard. Thus, the clock and weather widgets will not work when applied together. Thankfully, a solution has been made by combining the themes together.

To the left is an image of the theme I am using with both clock and weather widgets.

Customize the files as noted in the previous tutorials, and it should all work out fine.

tweaksThe following section is just a bunch of random tweaks Iʼve taken the time to compile.

mobilefinder tweakTHIS SECTION COURTESY OF COLLATERAL

MobileFinder (1.99$ in the App Store) can be used to see your media partition and transfer files to and from it, but it cannot see your system partition and therefore it is not very useful for people who jailbreak..

But, if you make its automatic directory a symlink to root, which is where it will start, you can access the system partition. You can do it for any part of the iPod for that matter.

For example:(the X's are the number that stands for the directory that Mobile Finder is in)

To find the directory MobileFinder is in, you can use the handy Terminal command to find App Store applications. Here it is again if you forgot.

cd /var/mobile/Applications/ find ./ -name Finder

TO MAKE A SYMLINK TO /

combining music & videoUnbeknownst to some people, the Music and Video applications on the iPod touch are actually one application called MobileMusicPlayer. This is the same application that is on the iPhone and if you want to save some space on your home screen, a simple replacement of MobileMusicPlayerʼs Info.plist will “merge” Music and Video. To do this, simply go to Cydia and install a package called MobileMusicPlayer Flip. Upon going back to the SpringBoard, your Music and Video have merged!

tips + tricks1. If you're scrolling through a long document/page in Safari - if you tap the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery, Safari will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page and the show address bar.

2. Turn off WiFi and SSH (using BossPrefs) to save battery power when not in use.

3. Double tapping the home button in any application, or with the screen off will bring up the music controls.

4. Make sure to completely close apps when you are done with them to save battery power. This is accomplished by pressing and holding the home button for approximately five seconds. This boosts battery life big time if you run lots of different apps all the time.

5. Holding down letters on the keyboard will pop up the accents/symbols associated with those letters. Once it pops up, slide your finger over to the accent/symbol you like.

6. Whilst in Mail's inbox view, sliding your finger from left to right on a message the 'delete' button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application.

7. In Safari double tap to zoom in. You can also "pinch" (putting your thumb and index finger on the screen and pinching in and out) to zoom in Safari and in Pictures.

8. You can charge your iPod Touch from any powered USB port. Such as a computer, printer, media centre. The device does not have to have iTunes installed to provide power to your iPod Touch.

9. Need a spare cleaning cloth for your touch, or an extra cloth to rest your iPod touch on while at work or school? Just go to your local vision care store (or pharmacy) and get an eyeglass/sunglass "cleaning cloth". Cheap and works great!

10. When watching a video, tap once to bring up the onscreen controls. When you are done watching a video make sure you press done so your progress will be saved.

11. When typing a lot of text in Safari turn it to horizontal view. The keyboard will be bigger and you can get a better grip of the Touch while typing with two thumbs.

12. When typing if you want to add something from the numbers keyboard just hold down the numbers and slide your finger to the number or symbol you want, and release. It will take you back to your letters keyboard. This way you donʼt have to tap numbers, tap your number, then tap numbers again to go back. This also applies for using the 'shift' key to apply capital letters.

13. When in Safari, if you are presented with a link, hold your finger over the link, and a bubble will appear showing the URL that the link is tied to.

14. In Safari since you can't open links in a new windows, you can open a new page, tap the bookmarks icon, tap the history folder and direct yourself to the last page you were just on and tap the link from there.

15. When listening to an audiobook, iTunes and your iPod create a new chapter list unrelated to the subject of the book. It's accessible using the same control used for viewing audio tracks (upper right of screen).

17. Make a spelling mistake? Press and hold the word you spelt wrong and a magnifying glass will appear. Slide your finger back and forth to move the cursor.

18. When you're on a website that has a frame or an iframe with scroll bars in it, use two fingers on that frame to scroll that window and back to a single finger to scroll the whole page.

19. When typing, if you press the space bar twice after a word it will insert a period and another space.

20. Press the power and home buttons and the screen will flash white, resulting in a screenshot being taken and stored in Photos.

21. Pressing and holding an image in Safari will allow you to save it in Photos.

22. While watching a video on the Youtube or Videos app, pause the video and press and hold the >>I button to play the video in slow-motion (forwards).

23. Upon going into Calculator, turn it sideways for a handy scientific calculator.

24. When you hold the .com button on the keyboard, it provides new units like .edu and .org.

25. Websites without an icon will just be a screenshot for webclips, for websites like this zoom into an area of the site you would like the webclip icon to look like... ex. zoom into the website logo and that will be the webclip icon.

26. If you pull the headphones out while music is playing, music will pause.

troubleshootingOH NO! Did something go wrong? Donʼt worry, it can be fixed quite easily. Go through this whole guide and see if your problem is answered. If it isnʼt, a best bet would be to restore - which will be detailed as DFU mode below.

COMMON PROBLEMS

I GET AN ERROR WHEN TRYING TO RESTORE TO MY CUSTOM FIRMWARE!

Well this is because you arenʼt in DFU mode, youʼre in Restore mode! Hereʼs how to get into DFU Mode.

• Attach the iPod to the computer• Hold Power button• Slide onscreen slide to turn the iPod off

• Hold the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds• Release power but keep holding home until the computer beeps as the iPod

is recognized.• At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

PWNAGE TOOL DOESNʼT RECOGNIZE MY 2.x FIRMWARE!

Try downloading the firmware again from http://felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware and from Firefox. I am not a Firefox user, but Firefox will download the firmware correctly and not mess it up like Safari does. Internet Explorer is also not the greatest for this, so please use Firefox.

JAILBREAKME.COM ISNʼT WORKING!

Check your firmware version by going into Settings, then General, then About. If itʼs 1.1.1, you can use jailbreakme.com. If it is anything else, like 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1, 2.2 - you must use another jailbreaking method. Jailbreakme.com only works on 1.1.1.

iTUNES SAYS MY MUSIC IS ON MY iPOD, BUT IT DOESNʼT SHOW UP!

Go to Settings, then General, and at the bottom press Reset All Settings. Hit Reset all settings (NOT THE ONE THAT SAYS CONTENT) but all settings. Your iPod should reboot and all of your music should be back in your Music application.

MY iPOD WONʼT TURN ON!

First, make sure itʼs charged. Plug it into your computer and leave it for an hour or two. If it is still unresponsive, see if it shows up in iTunes. If it does, restore it. If it doesnʼt, it may be time for a new iPod.

THEREʼS A SPINNING WHEEL THAT WONʼT GO AWAY!

First, leave it for a few seconds. Chances are, it could be a long respring. If it doesnʼt go away after about 5 minutes, try force powering off. Hold the power and home buttons simultaneously and release them when the Apple logo pops up. If it gets stuck on the apple logo for 5 minutes - you may have to SSH in and delete the last thing you installed and delete the N45AP.plist file in /System/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app.

UM... IʼM STUPID AND HID POOF AND NOW I CANʼT UNHIDE MY APPS. HELP!

First, if you have Cydia or Installer unhidden - install BossPrefs or SBSettings. BossPrefs has a hiding icons feature too. If you already have BossPrefs hidden, install Dock or AppFlow. Both are application launchers that can launch Poof or BossPrefs to unhide applications. I highly recommend using Dock because it isnʼt an application that you can hide - it is a bar that is always on the bottom of your screen that can launch any application.

Second, if Cydia is hidden but Settings isnʼt, go to General and reset all settings. If that doesnʼt work - enable then disable restrictions (if youʼre on 2.0) in the General menu.

Third, if all of your icons are hidden, you will need to SSH into your iPod and delete a file called N45AP.plist in /System/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/. That will work. To prevent this from happening, install a package in Cydia called Dock.

MY iPOD IS STUCK ON THE APPLE LOGO!

Well, it actually might not be. 2.x firmwares take a long time to boot up. Give it 5 minutes, walk away, and come back. It just works like that sometimes.

If that is not the case, SSH into your iPod and go to /var/mobile. Rename Applications to Applications2 and reboot. When your iPod boots, name it back to Applications and then Sync with iTunes.

WHY ARE SOME OF MY ICONS NOT CHANGING WHEN I APPLY A THEME?

Some icons wont change when you download a theme, why? Well, the creator will not have all the apps/games that they are making icons for. So they are unable to test if they work. Thus them spelling the name wrong, thus the icon not changing. You get me so far? So what you will need to do is edit the file name.

Here are some commonly misspelt names.

Winterboard- should be named WinterBoard.png AppStore - should be named App Store.png.

WHY ARE MY APP SKINS ARE NOT WORKING?

Winterboard is sometimes buggy and doesnʼt apply the skins for some applications, Calculator being the most famous example. This may not be the case though. Itʼs possible that your theme is below another theme, not allowing its skin to apply. For how to fix this, see the Winterboard section.

cool stuffVNC SERVERS

VNC servers allow you to see the screens of other devices, so you could see the screen of your computer from your iPod and then move around the mouse and type stuff.

While this is incredibly useful, it is also great for making fun of people and tricking them.

VEENCY

Veency is by saurik and allows you to control your iPod via a computer. Install Veency via Cydia and reboot. Then, set up a VNC connection on your computer to your iPodʼs IP Address, via a VNC client like Chicken of the VNC or TightVNC.

A box should pop up on your iPod asking if you would like to confirm the connection. Tap yes. On your computer you can now control your iPod. Itʼs quite laggy, but very cool. Have fun!

VNC

There are several VNC applications in the App Store - Mocha VNC, Mocha VNC Lite (Free), Jaadu Click, and Jaadu VNC. I personally use Jaadu VNC for its slickness and how fast it is. The other two are serviceable but Jaadu VNC is a bit pricy at $25.

In any case, hereʼs how to set it up. On a Mac, go to System Preferences, and click Sharing. Then enable Screen Sharing. In Jaadu VNC, it will automatically connect. In the other two, you must find your computerʼs IP address and enter it in.

On a PC, download TightVNC and enable it. Put your IP address in on your iPod, unless it is Jaadu VNC, which will automatically detect your computer.
