The President’s Column By Sean Fallesen
Thank you everyone! OrangeCon 2015 was fantastic!
The volunteers turned out, and we had a great group of
judges. No repeat of last year, this was just what I’d hoped
for. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a low stress
judging session at this show!
Not to belittle the judges themselves, or downplay their
careful consideration – there were plenty of close calls and
intense examinations. But there were enough teams so that
several tight categories could be debated simultaneously
while still other teams were progressing through less
contentious ones. This thing just flowed!
Ships were down… way down. Admittedly, I only entered
one this time – the big 1:200 Yamato I finished earlier this
year was recently handed over to my client, and I built a
bunch of tanks as a break from the shipyard after that beast.
I’ll have to make up for that in 2016.
Armor looked a bit thin this year. Still lots of good stuff
though. Cars likewise – I got the feeling the total count
was down, but again the quality was still up there. Our Best
of Show as a case in point. The “Unique Seven” was stunning! My brother took some really
close-up photos with a macro lens, and I’ll admit that I never would’ve noticed all the intricate
detailing those shots reveal. I expect to have them at the meeting to show you all. I’m confident
you’ll be impressed. That same lens allowed him to finally get some good shots of the figures –
something he’s struggled with the previous times he’s taken photos for us, trying to take in the
exquisite paintwork on these tiny masterpieces. (And some of these shots are so sharp that, like
watching an old sci-fi movie on a high-def TV, things that the eye would blur together are made
very stark. Like “How did he do that?” “Oh, that’s how.” You’ll see.)

The President’s Column
I think aircraft numbers were up – helped a bit by the turnout of large numbers of Fw-190s and
Bf-109s from two club builds. Sci-Fi numbers were definitely up – we had a double split! Glad
to see it. I feel like the diorama numbers were also up over last year, and the cleverness on display
was truly inspirational.
By far the most pleasant surprise was an exceptionally strong turnout in the Junior and Young
Adult categories. It was with great joy that we had to expand them by another half table to fit
them all. I remember when I first started there was a Civilian and Military category for both age
groups, and a Junior Best of Show (I can prove it – I got one). Maybe… just maybe… we could
bring these back? Hoping for too much? Time will tell.
As for my support of the show… I entered 11 models, though 5 were grouped together so it was
7 formal entries. I failed to complete the Bf-109 I’d planned to build, but I pulled out an old one
and cleaned it up to support the club project. Aside from that, the other 10 were all new builds
for this past year. (Add that Yamato, and I’m at 11 completed. If I can finish one more, I’ll have
averaged one a month… huh, for a year that I’ve felt so stymied in my building, I’ve actually
been very productive. Odd.)
The only thing I know of that didn’t go well was a mix-up with the trophy sponsorships, where
several paid sponsors did not get their plates. Apparently there were two lists being kept or
something of the sort. We’ll get it cleared up for next year. Please accept our sincere apology
for the error, and rest assured that it is not a personal slight against anyone. After all, my own
sponsorship was one of the ones that got missed!
Anyway, I hope you all had a good time at OrangeCon this year. I look forward to hearing your
thoughts and comments, and even more I look forward to sharing the photos with you all! SF

News Flash From newsletter contributor Karl Madcharo this time he reports on a couple of
different subjects. First off we have Airfix finally pulling the trigger on their
1/48 scale Curtiss P-40 B coming in 2016. Evidently this has been the kit a lot
of modelers have been waiting for. Great shot of a restored P-40 C at Duxford
in the shop during maintenance and a lot of other modeling info here. I am
beginning to like this Airfix site.

Second up Karl again brings us one more tidbit. This is the 360 degree view
in all axis of the National Air Force Museum B-36 J cockpit and engineers
station. This tour by way of your mouse inside the cockpit can make you a
little queasy if you’re prone to that. Me? Yea I cannot look at that kind of
tour very long either. Enjoy! (Ed.)

IPMS / USA Membership – New Rates in Effect
Membership is of great importance, both here at the level of the local chapter as well as the
National level. As a long time member I can highly recommend the expenditure of the additional
dollars to become a member of the national organization.
With membership come six copies of the IPMS Journal publication which is better than ever, and
the right to participate at the IPMS National Convention contest. The subscription to the Journal
alone is worth the cost of joining.
A copy of the membership application is below or available on our website, or at the IPMS / USA
website address, www.ipmsusa.org. Complete the form and return it to the address listed at the
bottom of the form along with your method of payment.

Orangecon / Miramar Edition
Yes this edition is both. I myself made the trip to the USMC Miramar Air Show in San Diego on
the same weekend as the OrangeCon show. So you might see photos from the camping trip
plastered among the other news. I wish there was a way to move one of these dates to the
preceding or following weeks as I have always been a fan of both. First OrangeCon I attended
was in 1989 and the first Miramar Air Show around the same time. I included a camping trip
with my sons a few years later. Have been switching back and forth ever since. Hopefully I will
not bore you with the air show pics, for sure we have a lot of other great stuff in here this month.
Look for the OrangeCon photos from attendees and members that contributed. Joe LoMusio has
a lot of great pics at the club website too! I hope you enjoy this edition. TH

Orangecon Photos Here we have some various photos of the IPMS Orange
County OrangeCon event provided by our usual newsletter
contributors but also by the IPMS Orange County
membership as well. The event was held at the Cal State
Fullerton (CSF) Titan Student Union building on October 3rd
on the CSF campus. A most excellent facility for a model
contest I might add. If I have missed anyone’s name in this
presentation forgive me as I can only work with the
submissions I’ve been given and guess work on my part.
Since your Editor was out-of-town on the day of the event I
was unable to attend but thankfully we have some pictures
here. All I have heard so far was the show was a great success
and a good time for all. Thanks to all of the sponsors and to
everyone coming to the event to participate. (Ed.)

IPMS OC Contest Table By Darnell Pocinich
Three cheers for OrangeCon 2015. This year’s showcase event for IPMS Orange County was a
great day for our club. One hundred eighteen (118) modelers entered 423 models and more when
multiple model entries are included as in Category 46 - Collections. Junior and Young Adult
modelers entered thirty (30) models. One group of youngsters came down from the Bay Area to
enter the competition. Many thanks for our club members and some from other clubs who formed
a robust judging crew of over thirty (30). That kept our OrangeCon program right on schedule
for the awards ceremony at the end of the day. Thanks again to all who stepped up.
Now on to our monthly model contest for October. This month’s theme is “Hawks and Cats”.
We showcase two (2) WWII allied fighter aircraft that served the entire duration of WWII. The
F4F Wildcat and the P-40 Warhawk. Total production for the Wildcat was 7,905 and 13,738 for
the Warhawk. Both fighters were flown by the USA and a number of our allies over the course
of the war. Wildcats served with distinction at Midway Island pitted against the Japanese Zero.
Warhawks bedeviled the Japanese pilots in China flown by members of the famous Flying Tigers.
Build up a Cat or Hawk of your choice in any scale.
Our November modeling contest theme is “Not Ready for OrangeCon”. Finish or build a model
you intended to enter at OrangeCon 2015 (or any other past OrangeCon) but just didn’t quite get
the job done on time. Maybe you built a kit but got cold feet at the last minute and didn’t enter
it. Bring it in for the contest next month – any subject in any scale! I will take everyone’s word
that your entry is a “Not Ready for OrangeCon” subject. Good luck to you all! DP

A Lo Cubano - Like a Cuban! by Foster Rash
Havana traffic
I've gotten hooked on Cuban
Chrome, which is a new reality
TV car show on Discovery
Channel. It is filmed on location
in Cuba and follows the exploits
of members of the A Lo Cubano
Car Club who work together to
keep their pre-1960 American
cars on the road (there are about
60,000 American cars still in use in Cuba). But unlike the guys on Overhaulin,' the Cubans have
no corner AutoZone nor internet access to Classic Industries or Original Parts Group. After the
1959 Cuban revolution, the communist Castro regime seized American businesses without
compensation. The US responded with a trade embargo and American cars and parts have not
been available to Cubans since 1960.
Cuban fabricating a part
Lack of parts requires improvised repairs
and dealings with entrepreneurs who sell
parts out of the trunk of their car. The
adaptations these guys perform, with only
rudimentary tools and equipment, are
very creative.

My friend Jose is a talented mechanic and restorer. His passion is 1950-70 era Cadillacs and GM
muscle cars. He emigrated from Cuba to the US about 30 years ago and arrived in Miami with
nothing but the clothes he was wearing; He was not allowed to bring his tools with him. We
worked together at a Cadillac dealership and shared the hobby of restoring old cars. I once
commented about all the old cars in Cuba and what a bonanza that was going to be once Castro
died and relations were restored with Cuba.

"Ready for restoration!"
Jose said American collectors
will be disappointed because
those cars are cacharros
(jalopies) and there are very few
original cars in Cuba. He said
Cuba has shortages typical of all
communist countries and that
includes transportation. New
cars cannot be purchased
because all cars imported since the revolution are property of the government; a person must be
well connected to get one. So a Cuban with enough money to buy a car is limited to a cacharro.
Most of the old cars in Cuba are everyday
workhorses, not hobby cars, and many are
used as taxis for tourists. Because American
replacement parts are unavailable, hay que
resolver (it has to be resolved), a solution must
be found. So adaptations of Russian parts,
including engine/trans swaps, are common.
Many cars have been converted to diesel
engines because gasoline is hard to get and
expensive.

A Lo Cubano - Like a Cuban!
Jose served in the Cuban army and because of his mechanical aptitude, was sent to Russia for two
years of technical training. Due to chronic parts shortages in the government managed economy,
the Russians taught mechanics to rebuild rather than replace parts. Jose was trained to be a
welder, machinist and fabricator. He returned to Cuba fluent in Russian and able to repair any
vehicle; motorcycle, car, truck, tank, anything! Now he applies his skills to restoring muscle cars.
In the run-up to the 2008 election, Jose asked me a couple of questions. He said he came here
with nothing, learned English and became a citizen. Now he owns his own home, has two kids
in college and a perfectly restored '68 Z-28 Camaro to drive on the weekends. He believes there
is no better country than the USA and the American way of doing things has provided the most
people with the highest standard of living in the history of mankind. That is why people from all
over the world try to come here to share in the American Dream.
Power to the People
So that being said, he asked, "Why do so
many Americans say bad things about their
country and want to change the country to
give the politicians more control? Don't
they realize the more power the
government has, the less freedom the
individual person has?" And, "Why do
Americans admire Fidel Castro and Che
Guevara when these men are brutal killers
who murdered tens of thousands of Cubans
and turned the island into a prison?" I had
no good answers for him, it is a puzzle to
me as well.
Hopefully Obama's decision to renew relations with the Castro regime will lessen repression and
lead to the Cuban car enthusiasts gaining access to the replacement parts market in the free world.
Only time will tell.

Reopening relations with Cuba
The model
Modeling a Cuban cacharro was fun and
a relatively quick build for IPMS OC
August Cruise Nite. I had a '57 Ford in
my stash that I had bought for parts at a
distressed kit auction.

The wheels and some other parts were missing,
so I improvised replacements from the scrap
box. Hay que resolver! I installed a scratch built
freelanced "Eastern Bloc" diesel engine and
gave the car a bright, Caribbean vibe paint job...

DKA Distressed Kit Auction Next distressed kit Auction is in December. These are always great meetings when people bid
on old and new kits, half built stuff, surprising finds and generally a good time. If you happen to
have a kit or two that you know you would never build, or that one you started that you thought
was going to be your Grand Master entry and no longer interested in them? Don’t worry, the
raffle is totally anonymous so it’s a great way to discreetly get rid of your projects and know that
the new owner will already have a head start on theirs. Bring the water heater leaked kits and
good kits to the meeting for donation and drop off with Sir David Frederick or Sean Fallesen.

Features of Detail & Scale’s first digital publication
on the McDonnell F3H Demon include:
1. A complete Developmental History of the aircraft including how it was designed to meet
specific needs of the Navy and where it fit in to the development of carrier based jet
fighters in the 1950s.
2. A chapter on Demon Variants that covers the prototypes and each production version of
the Demon, explaining in considerable detail the differences and the weapons each could
employ.
3. A chapter called Demon Daze written by several pilots who flew the Demon. This chapter
is filled with informative and interesting observations from pilots who actually strapped
into the aircraft and took it into the skies!
4. A chapter covering Squadrons & Deployments takes looks at every squadron that flew
the Demon with paint schemes and markings illustrated by photographs and color
artwork developed specifically for this publication. Every deployment made by these
squadrons is covered with a brief unit history of each. Many rare and never-before-
published color photographs of Demons are also included in this section and throughout
the book.
5. Demon Details is the most extensive detail chapter ever included in a Detail & Scale
publication illustrating the Demon with scores of detail photographs. All of the photos
are in color, and almost all were taken specifically for this publication to provide the best
and most complete coverage possible in this detailed look at the aircraft.
6. Detail & Scale’s usual Modeler’s Section that discusses, reviews, and illustrates the scale
models of the Demon.
Other features of the book include four-view scale drawings in color and original and highly
detailed artwork illustrating the cockpit details and the two types of ejection seats, all of which
were created specifically for this publication. There is also a look at the restoration process for
the Demon on display at the National Museum of Naval Aviation.
