IPIRTI - INDUSTRY INTERACTIVE MEET AT BELGAUM

IPIRTI-Industry Interactive Meet was arranged at Z.P. Hall, Belgaum, on 18th December 2015. This Meet was inaugurated with lighting of lamp by Shri Ashok Lavasa, IAS, Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change followed by other dignitaries. Dr. B.N. Ms. Sujatha. D, Scientist made a presentation on “Latest IPIRTI technologies available for adoption by the growers/ entrepreneurs” and Shri. Uday D.N., Scientist, on “Plantation species including Bamboo for plywood industry” in the Meet. Mrs. Mamatha B.S. and Shri. Kiran M.C., Scientists also partici-pated in the Meet.

Open discussion was made on the issues related to Plantations/Growers/Entrepreneurs and the tech-nical presentations between participants and organisers. Many questions were raised by the partici-pants including the students of Forest College, Sirsi. The Director and Scientists of IPIRTI, threw light on the role of IPIRTI in addressing those issues.

Dr. B,N, Mohanty,Director, IPIRTI stated that Hon’ble Minister of State, Govt. of Maharashtra, De-partment of Finance, Planning & Rural Development, Shri Deepak Vasant Kesarkar during his visit to IPIRTI has suggested to involve the Agro-foresters of Shindudurg and Chandrapur for setting up of Industries for Plywood and Bamboo products from plantation crops. He also informed that for the establishment of CFC in Sindhudurgh, the State Government and big Entrepreneurs have to come forward like in the states of Punjab, Mizoram and Tripura. Because certain technologies require high capital investment for setting up industry on these respects.

The Chief Guest Shri. Ashok Lavasa, Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change highlighted about the important role of Entrepreneurs, establishment of CFC, the purpose of Skill India Mission Scheme and approaching Ministry of Textile to transfer the technology and commercialize the products.

During the course of interaction there were queries related to Profit and Loss, buy back arrangement for plantation timber, from Growers and introduction of Chinese bamboos in India. It was clarified that based on the climatic conditions different species of bamboo plantation can be taken up. Also they were explained about types of Bamboo viz. Sympodial bamboo and Monopodial bamboos. Sympodial bamboo (clump farming) grow generally in India and can become fully rejuvenated within few years of harvesting. Monopodial bamboos which are running bamboos grow in Central China and can be easily segregated for harvest. Accordingly harvesting is much simpler in comparison to Sympodial bamboos. And it was suggested to go with Sympodial bamboo as in India the climatic condition sup-ports sympodial bamboo growth.

Some representatives from Growers side enquired about the inter crop for example grapes, substitute crop, eucalyptus plantation and commercial benefits. For that, it was suggested that for Melia dubia plantation in Hiriyur, Chithradurga, farmers have adopted inter crop plantation of Sapota, Mausombi and have achieved good profit. A group of students from Forestry College, Sirsi who attended the interactive session enquired about the spreading of awareness among farmers for the use of bamboo products and their market-

4

ing. It was clarified by the scientists of IPIRTI that in order to bring awareness among farmers and to promote innovative technologies, general awareness camp and Interactive meets are conducted. There is a need for more such programmes across India in future. Also it was brought out that some of the farmers are well aware about the plantation timbers and use of rice husk etc., for high-end composite products..Ms. Sujatha D., Scientist, IPIRTI proposed the vote of thanks.

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) from Plantation grown Casuarina species

Wood is the most preferred material for various end uses ranging from Household furniture’s to com-posite products. Thus wood can be replaced by wood itself which is considered an energy efficient & carbon-neutral material. The emphasis is to shift the source from natural forests to plantation timbers. The choice of species for different end uses is also changing from durable primary conventional timber species to short-rotation, fast-growing plantation species. Large number of wood based industries such as sawn wood and composite panel product manufacturers presently face acute shortage of raw materials and the supply–demand gaps are increasing day by day in alarming proportions. Amongst the several options available to bridge the gap are: import of timber, which is purely a short-term measure and generating tree resources within the country which could be a better idea as a long-term measure in sustainability terms, as well as a source of carbon stocking which is important from the ecological and environmental view points.

MDF is used extensively in factory-assembled and ready- to-assemble furniture, as well as in cabinets, underlayment, drawer fronts, molding, and countertops. Finishes and overlays can be used to provide a

grain pattern typical of lumber, and many wood finishing components such as door edgings, decorative trim, frames, and cornices are being made from MDF. Moreover, MDF is replacing thin plywood and wet-process hardboard in the production of molded and flush door skins. New MDF products include generic and proprietary panels.

In the present scenario of sourcing timber for panel industry from agroforestry, it has become very im-portant to study the suitability of timbers for various end use applications. As use of Plantation grown species for different panel production possess different challenges in processing due to inherent defects present in the plantation species. The objective of the research reported here was to develop the materi-al and process for manufacturing MDF panels from wood fibers of Casuarina. Refining parameters with pressure of 0.5Mpa and 0.6Mpa at refining time of 4 and 7 minutes have been studied by Shri. Uday D N and his team at IPIRTI. Fiber analyser was used to analyse the fiber length, fiber width, aspect ratio, Kink per mm, and curl index. Test panels of thickness 12 mm were made with urea formaldehyde resin. Physical and Mechanical properties were tested according to IS 12406-2003 “Specification for MDF for General Purpose”. The study shows that pressure of 6 kg/cm2 gave increased fibre length and less no of fineness giving rise to good internal bond strength. The results showed that mechanical properties of the panels were minimum requirements for MDF as specified in IS:12406-2003. These results indicate that MDF panels can be made from wood fiber derived from plantation grown Casuarina.
